Device Manager | IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers | Primary IDE channel | Advanced Settings tab. You'll see what to do from there. Your Current Transfer Mode should be Ultra DMA Mode 5, or some other DMA mode.

Sorry for being such a newbie with this.

Okay, checked; Primary is UDMA Mode 5.
    Secondary is PIO Mode, thou.

Again, thnx for all the help!

EDIT: Also, I tried just playing a movie DvD and it skips and stutters just like when I burn, also the system resource is maxed on whatever program is using the DvD.

    Turk,

You might even want to consider reloading your OS from scratch. If your audio gets corrupt when logging off or your software takes 100% CPU time, it could be a software compatibility problem. Reloading the OS will narrow down what the possible problem could be (hardware/software).

Reloading the OS is the very last thing I want to do, especially on a laptop (I always have trouble with the desktop alone). I'd rather send it into the shop before I do that.

Further reading that article I linked, I would seem the PIO mode change is the root of the problem here. Can't believe Win XP has such a dumb bug up it's arse.

Ah, there's your problem then. Your DVD burner is on the secondary IDE controller (HD is on primary). Will it let you select "Use DMA when available"?

Once in a while you'll run across a brain-damaged DVD-related program that will mess up that settings when you install it. Things like those commercial DVD movie decryptor programs.

Yup, it is on "Use DMA when available" but it's still in PIO Mode.

From reading that article, it's actually a Win XP problem. Retarded memory hogger that it is just makes me that much more proud of my Win2K desktop.

Handing it over to some people who have experience with laptops to try to get it back to DMA mode. If that doesn't work, I can always try my hand at the regedit changes that's suggested in the article.

Also, hope this helps others who might have gotten the same problem, too, instead of just stealing the thread :D

Aside from the internal wireless, that's the exact setup I'm still going to get.

Every company's products has some stupid problem that'll make you go "Oh no, I can't buy THAT now", and the only things for this seem pretty minor. The dual-channel issue is relatively unimportant unless you're a serious power user, in which case you'd probably be buying a higher-end model anyway.

Try manually adjusting the display settings on each mode. It should remember the settings and load them back the next time.

AFAIK it's a glitch in the power management software. I'm no expert, but I think it's in the way it was written, because it was still there after I did a clean install. I know it's a minor annoyance, but just simply manually adjust it after it goes dim on you. If anyone has found a fix for this, please let us know.

hr phenom, that's just it. For some reason the software can't remember the last settings and has to revert to some "dim" default.

First post so please be gentle.

I just bought a zv6000 from Office Depot that was a returned CTO. The Manager there gave me an Very Good deal. Unfortunately he doesn't have the exact specs on the model. I did a complete restore and am up and running as if it was new.

Things I know about this notebook.
    AMD 64 3200+, 512 RAM (1 stick), 80GB, 15.4 widescreen, Radeon 200M graphics, 802.11g, DVD burner, XP Pro

The things that I don't know is (1) how fast (rpm) the HD is? (2) Brightview?
Is there a way to check? I have a feeling the HD is only 4200 which doesn't really bother me that much. The screen seems really bright compared to my old non-brightview notebook but I'm just wondering whether it's brightview or not. The box has all these bar codes on the side but I have no idea what they mean.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The best way to find out whether your screen is brightview or not is to feel whether the screen is glossy or matte finish. Brightview screens are glossy and are very reflective.

Thanks. OK I'm pretty sure that I have the non-brightview screen. :(

Oh well. I didn't configure this myself but I got a good price so I shouldn't complain. The screen is actually very nice. LCDs screens have improved alot over the last few years.

Well well well. I have caught up on this thread after a few months away. I seem to be the first lucky owner of a completely dead notebook. I went to Brazil for 6 weeks and left my laptop with a friend. He didn't touch it while I was gone. When I returned a couple of weeks ago I pushed the power button and nothing happened. I called support and they said maybe the battery had caused a short. Ridiculous. However, I got it RMAed in about a week's time. Nothing huge. No charge on my part. They didn't wipe my drive which I'm happy about. I have no idea what happened, but the little paper insert I received back with my notebook had mechanical failure and motherboard checked. If this happens to you don't worry. Just send it back and wait a week. It sucked but warranties are handy.

The video card in the zv6000 is the Radeon Xpress 200m, which has 128 MB of dedicated memory and can share up to 128 MB of system memory (this sharing is called Hypermemory). Since most graphics cards are designed to fit into a notebook, the zv6000's card should not be upgradeable.

Actually, I think it has the potential to borrow 512 MB! of memory if you have 2 GB installed. But that's pointless because no program uses or needs that much memory.
