Turion notebooks from other vendors probably won't be available until the end of this month. HP could offer them for the zv6000... or they could reserve them for a different notebook. I wouldn't put too much stock in what the HP salescritters say.

If you're going to really push the CPU while on battery, the Turion would be nice... or you can undervolt the Athlon 64 down to near Turion ML levels with CrystalCPUID, maybe even better than that on the new E3 core they're probably using on the zv6000. In light CPU load scenarios a Turion won't make much of a difference. The main advantage of the Turion is that they can put in a smaller cooling system and thus build thin-and-lights. In short, I wouldn't wait around for the Turion if you want the zv6000. I would wait around if you really want a thin-and-light (for more money), since HP says they aren't shipping zv6000's for another month+ anyhow.

Is there a big difference in the new? processors available for the zv6000 like the AMD 3500 vs the AMD 3400 found in the old series?

My *guess* is that the new chips are using the new 90nm Rev. E3 core with SSE3 and AMD decided to give it a slightly higher TPI rating to match the current desktop offerings. They might have crammed a Socket 939 chip (dual channel memory) in there but I seriously doubt it. We won't know until somebody gets one.

I couldn't wait for ya brainstretch. I ordered my r3000z with the
AMD 3700+. I don't think I need that much power now, but maybe a few years from now.

I just purchased th ZV6000 through costco and it was alot cheaper in price than HPSHOPPING.COM. HP was $1772.00 after $500 rebate Costco after $700 credit was $1539.99. There is definately an advantage to buying through costco. I called HP to see if they would price match They said that they could not on a custom order. They said that the costco laptop could have different components. Is this true? and if so is it $240 worth of diffence? I really can't see them using a different mother board.

It ends up being the same as getting through HP. The starting price for the zv6000 is what $799 at HP and $1499(after man rebate of $50) at Costco. just woke up i could be wrong. I think the biggest thing is that Costco tells you when there deal ends, lets see if HP is the same with ending their $500 off deal the same as Costco gives up to $750 credit. Maybe this is when HP introduces the better good for the machine. I'd like to know from anyone who bought this through Costco.

I think the HP salescritter was making stuff up. HP uses various HD, optical drive, and SODIMM brands, so you never know precisely what you're going to get regardless of where you buy your HP notebook from. That's par for the course for all major PC vendors.

I think some of the previous posts indicating this notebook need to be a little more clear on HOW well this graphics solution is going to run some of the newer games, there's nothing wrong with the x300 if you're not doing anything intensive, but if you're talking about games like HL 2 / Doom 3 / Far Cry its not so great. You're going to have to turn off most of the graphics options that make the games look as good as they do, and keep the resolution at 800x600 or less for > 40 fps. Dont get me wrong, this will eat any older game for breakfast, but in terms of handling current and upcoming games this laptop doesn't fit the bill. The x6000 is way to big, and seriously who wants a p4 in their laptop these days? I wish companies would move away from this 17" laptop trend and give decent options with a 15.4" system.

Can someone send me a direct link to the costco site where I can take a look at the zv6000. I have searched through the site and cannot find that laptop. Thanks in advance.[ :D]

I think postal meant that he refuses to buy a P4 blast furnace notebook in order to get a high-end GPU. Me too. Seriously, if you've been spoiled by a 6600GT on the desktop, a X300 derivative is weak. HP has a hole in their product line that you could drive a truck through, we've been complaining to them for a year about it, and they still insist on reserving the top-of-the-line GPUs for Intel crap.

Yeah, I'd go with the zv6000 over the Uniwill-built stuff like the ABS G3 too.

I managed to get in on the Costco deal on 3/31 by sheer luck :) I was previously looking for either an Acer or an Asus, and I really wanted Pentium M processor, decent GPU and sound, widescreen w/briteview and dvd burner. I *think* i've found all that, except for the Pentium part with the ZV6000. But hey, I did order the AMD64 3200+ on it so it shouldn't totally suck, lol. What really got me was saving about $300 over HP's site, free shipping and a 6 month return policy!

Sorry, the last line was confusing. What I meant was that the only other option to the zv6000 was the x6000, which has a pentium 4, 17" screen etc. The thing is with the x6000 the x600 is more of a mid range graphics card, and for the price you might as well get a dell 9300, which has the $800 coupon AGAIN, so you can get a far superior system from dell again for only $1200....this is getting way too tempting.

In terms of physical size, is WXGA actually narrower/smaller than XGA? From the paper, WXGA should be bigger 1280x800 vs. 1024x768 on all dimensions. But if WXGA has smaller pixel spacing it may be smaller.

Good evening everyone. Nice site, nice forums, nice topic you've got here.

What do you like about the ZV6000? What excites you about it?

This laptop seems pretty well-regarded here. What do you guys think about the obsolescence aspect of the ZV6000 and other Athlon 64 laptops, vs. Pentium M stuff? I know the Athlon 64 will support 64-bit and I believe the current P-M will not. How big a factor do you think this is?

I am itching to buy a laptop and shopping hard and smart in the $700-1,000 range. $800 buys me a pretty well-configured Inspiron 6000 or also a nice-spec ZV6000 based on the current Costco deal.

I'm looking to do fairly basic stuff - PowerPoint presentations, web surfing, MS Ofc, etc. No gaming, no CAD, nothing fancy.

    Any recommendations?

The Costco discounts on the ZV6000 are tempting, but once I build it to the $900-1,000 level and step back and have a look at the specs, I'm not sure if I am getting my money's worth or not.

I'm thinking a good deal on a $600 Celeron M with 512 MB RAM, CDRW/DVDROM, 40-60GB HD, built-in wireless might be more than enough for me, but I worry it will be obsolete too soon.

This week's Microcenter flyer has a Compaq Presario M2010US for $600 after rebates with Athlon XP-M 3000, 15.4" WS BrightView, 512MB RAM, 60GB HD, CDRW/DVDROM, 32MB NVIDIA graphics, and built-in wireless. Incidentally, I cannot find hardly any information even to confirm the existence of this laptop configuration anywhere on the web.

    Your feedback is appreciated.

Since 64-bit WinXP has already hit MSDN, I'd hesitate to buy a 32-bit-only CPU. Yes, you're not going to do anything that needs an upgrade to 64-bits today, but tomorrow? And what about resale value? If you need a thin-and-light I'd say wait a bit longer for the (more expensive) AMD Turion laptops, but otherwise the zv6000 has a decent feature set at a good price. Definitely get the 128MB dedicated memory video (most of the low-end P-M and Celeron-M's have shared memory video, bleah).

That Microcenter flyer sounds messed up to me. They probably just put the wrong model number on it. You can swap in an Athlon 64 into the HP/Compaq zv5000z/R3000z series Athlon XP-M notebooks, so I'll make an exception in my 64-bit-capable-only rule for them. If you can find a good deal on a 5000/3000 machine you like, by all means go for it.

Nice config. VERY nice config. The only thing that might be missing is a 12 cell battery (vs. the standard 8). For $1050+tax... geeze, buy one.

The main advantage to the zv6000 is the better GPU. The CPU is likely to be a newer 90nm chip that'll run cooler than the older 130nm chips the zv5000z's use. Otherwise, the differences are minor, and they dropped the 1680x1050 res screen option for some strange reason (I really like mine but some people say it makes text too tiny, plus it's not BrightView).

    Thanks.

How does the 6000 compare with the 5000? I know the 6000 is the new model, but are there any compelling reasons to buy it instead of the 5000? Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere - feel free to point me to another thread or something. I've spent a few hours on the site tonight and haven't come across this sort of comparison.

Looks like Costco added a pre-configured zv6000 yesterday that's even cheaper than it is through the Costco configurator!

    Athlon 3200+
    512MB RAM (2x256)
    80GB HD 5400RPM
    8x DVD+/-RW & CD-RW combo drive
    15.4" WXGA (1280x800) with BrightView
    128MB ATI Radeon XPress 200M
    Integrated 802.11 b/g
    Integrated Bluetooth
    Integrated 56k modem
    XP Professional Edition with SP2
    Free shipping

    $1,049.99 + tax, after instant $700 off.
Total with 6% Mich sales tax and after $50 mail-in rebate: $1,062.99.

That sounds like a fairly high-end laptop for a midrange price.

Not only is this a lot cheaper than configuring it on Costco's site, but it also saves on sales tax since the custom config gives the $700 discount AFTER tax but the pre-configured unit gives the $700 discount BEFORE tax. In Michigan, that's another $42 savings.

    $2,022.99 - $700.00 = $1,322.99 + tax
Total with 6% Mich sales tax and after $50 mail-in rebate: $1,394.37.

Is the BrightView screen worth an extra $25? What are the pros and cons of the BrightView 15.4" WXGA (1280x800) vs. the standard 15.4" WXGA? I'm sure some info is buried in this site somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet.

Has anybody priced out RAM specifically for the zv6000 to see how much cheaper it may be than the 1/2 off upgrade prices? Going from 256x1 to 256x2 is $40 from OD; 256x1 to 512x1 is $50. Those seem like reasonable prices, but I'm guessing you could do better aftermarket.

I just customized a HP ZV6000 on OD's techdepot and it says it usually ships in 9 business days is that accurate? I'm asking because costco and HP both have a ship date of atleast a month.

Also if you get the notebook from techdepot, can you still get the hp extended warranty on the notebook or is there some other option?

    512MB (2x256)

If I could by a couple I would and sell them on ebay when the rebate runs out. Works out to about $1500 with rebates or $2000 with out rebates on hpshopping.com

Waiting on shipping confirmation. This should serve as my desktop for the next to years hopefully. Also HP said I could purchase the HP extended warranty from by calling the 800s after I made the purchase.

    Good deal yeah or neh?

I was looking at the mail-in rebate form -- and it does not list the zv6000 model as an "eligible" item... am i reading the rebate form wrong?

The athlon 64 have “cool in quite” technology is it really quite and no problem with long time work?
How about “hps” shopping card? Is it useful? 12 month no payment? Is it real?
Is there any body in this forum that shops a notebook and post me and get his own fee? I don’t live in USA

Officedepot is offering 50% off on upgrade and $200 rebate for ZV6000 this week so it's cheaper than Costco.
I'm looking for a good laptop using for encoding/decoding/converting audio and video. I also plan to use it as a DVD player when traveling. I intended to buy Dell I6000 with intel PM 1.6G but I missed the coupon $750. However, what I saw is any upgrade on Dell system is very costly compared to HP/Compaq. It looks like they mark up the price and then give you back some kind of discount every week. I've read thru the discussion of Dell I6000 and HP6000 and got positive feeback. Since I'm a newbie on computer, especially on laptop, I have some stupid questions. Hope nobody minds.
    1) How to compare the performance of PentiumM to Athlon64? In Tom's hardware, they compared P4 vs. Athalon64 and P4 was better for audio and video. Does Athlon64 consume a lot of power as P4?
    2) When you use your laptop as DVD player, does a higher screen resolution of 1280x800 give better quality picture? If it does, I'd better wait for HP make this upgrade available on ZV6000. Also, is the GPU with 128MB good enough for audio/video editing?
    3) I saw this website tracking all Dell coupons but didn't mention about Office Depot offer. Does Office Depot, Officemax, or Staples offen has this kind of discount?
    Thanks.

    1) The Pentium M has better battery life, the Athlon 64 is more powerful and (of course) 64-bit capable. The 64-bit WinXP launch should be on April 24th. Audio/video editing apps will be ported to 64-bits VERY quickly. I'd consider AMD64 to be mandatory for your needs. Normal 32-bit WinXP will suffice until the 64-bit software is ready.

    2) Beyond 1280x800 won't make a difference for DVD. You'll probably want the BrightView screen option. 128MB is overkill for 2D apps like video editing, you need the extra memory for games more than anything else.

    3) Check their websites. Most put copies of their Sunday newspaper ads online. Like neevakee said, Office Depot currently has the best deal, you just have to go to one of their stores to get it.

Nice to know my zv5430us isn't obsolete at 3 months.

I noted with interest a post a few pages back that asked whether components in the zv5000 series were upgradeable -- I'm interested in that, too. Will I be able to drop a new AMD64 CPU in this machine in a year or two?

There are most certainly Socket 754 PCIe boards:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-533&depa=1
Socket 939 gets you a dual-channel memory controller. Socket 754 is single-channel. That's the only substantive difference AFAIK.

I like nVidia GPUs better than ATI just because their drivers tend to be better and their Linux support is first-rate, but for 2D work like video editing I don't see why it matters? I should think that AVID will eventually do a 64-bit WinXP port and that should favor the Athlon 64?

Are there any currently shipping 7200RPM notebook drives larger than the Hitachi 60GB? I haven't seen any. For video editing, a 7200RPM internal drive with a big external USB2.0 drive for raw video storage is probably the way to go.

Hi i'm new to this forum, but i'm thinking of taking advantage of this deal at office depot and I was wondering if anyone knows if this would be a good laptop for video editing with an 80 gig 5400 rpm drive. A friend of mine says that ATI's Radeon cards aren't good for video editing and that I should wait for a laptop that uses Nvidia. I primarily will be using Avid Xpress Pro. I know that Avid doesn't support AMD, but if anyone has any experience using AVID on an AMD or an HP laptop I would appreciate any feedback. Also how hard would it be to swap out the hard drive with a 80 gig 7200 hard drive and which would you recommend? Thanks in Advance!!

i dont know if you will be able to upgrade with the new chips in a few years. Thesocket type is changing and im not 1005 sure, but i think there are 939sockets in this computer, because pci express is required for the 64 bit processor. the 939 was being devolped to better work with pci express. So will you be able to , i dont know, if they still make the ship that fits tno your computer then yes. If not then no. 2 years ago the pentiums and amds used a diffrent size socket then what they use now, but you can find the last gen of a socket and put that in.

    Nice config.

I think you're asking for high-speed cell phone Internet, not short-range WiFi? I'd check out the T-Mobile and Cingular forums over at http://www.howardforums.com/ for that question. You can use your phone's Bluetooth connection to let your zv6000 use the phone's Internet feed. I've read that this works on Cingular (unsupported by them, but that's not a problem) and I'd be surprised if T-Mobile doesn't too. Alas, I'm using Nextel, can't quite bring myself to pay the early termination fees to switch carriers. Verizon cripples their phones' Bluetooth capabilities, or did last I checked.

    Hi all,
Just found this forum while doing a search on the zx6000. Read most of the posts in this thread. Back from when everyone was guessing what was going to be in the puter to what is available and then to people ordering. Seams to be a group of well read people.

Well, I too, decided to get HP zv6000 so I ordered one from Office Depot on 4/12/05. Really liked the 50% off of all the accessories so I added most the obvious ones. In my sig. you will see all the things I got. Left out all the standard items and only listed the ones I choose to add. They told me the backlog was 9 working days and the salesman, who really didn’t know much about puters, stated they usually are rec’d within 2 weeks. I went to check on the order and it has changed from received to accepted. Guess that’s good.

As to the price, the total was $944.99. But considering I upgraded most everything, I feel I got a great deal. Even added the extra 12-cell battery. I only went for the 64 3200+ AMD, 60GB HD 5400RPM, the 1x 512mb ram. Didn’t see any reason to spend the money to get the 3500+ or more ram. Probably can get the ram cheaper later if I decide I really need it.

Really will be only using it when I go on a trip and want to get online or whatever in a hotel or to throw in the saddlebag on the motorcycle. I am planning on hooking up a cam on the bike to record to the laptop while out on the road. Pretty much have a puter everywhere else. Have a 3200+ ShuttleX SN41G2, AMD 3200+ Barton, PC2700-1x512, 200 gig Maxtor HD, Opus SFX-1215 (12-volt power supply), 108Mbps WIFI, DVD+/-R+/-RW 4x40x24x40, 7" Lilliput Touch Screen, BU-303 GPS, VeiwSonic VP150m, wireless keyboard and trackball.

I do have a question for anyone that can help me. What is the best/least expensive way to get he HP connected to a broadband connection? Back about 2 years ago when I was toying with the idea to get the carputer hooked up there was a way to connect thru a cell phone but it only connected at 14kbps. I have run across blurbs, on the net, that they have broadband now. As I wasn’t entertaining the idea any more I never really read up on it, just glanced through it. Now, it seems, I have a reason to check into it. Hoping some one here knows a way of accomplishing the connection.

Thanx, look forward to the sharing in this forum,
    Gary

about he internet cellphone, the best way to go is t-mobile they have a 56KB not Kb for i think $30 a motnh, it is online only (the price). You have to get a specail card though. I think f you are single and travel a lot that is a realy good deal. I know that when i travel some of the hotels i stay at cost $10 to connect. I would get it, but im in college and my college has one of the best networks, wired and wireless in the country. Well our wireless isnt the best but it is top ten, the main reason being my school isn't that large and there by larger schools have bigger wifi networks.
