You cant narrow a bad combo. This problem is evident on a universal scale and has hit all manufacturers, all parts and all processors at some point.
Its simply a bad mixture of good parts; all of which work fine if you replace and try them elsewhere.
The effect is called piezoelectricity and there are lots of articles about it yet none that solve it.
Here is Dells response:
http://support.dell.com/support/top...d=0A7D5CD2E17F5125E0401E0A55176204&doclang=en
Personally, I experienced it in my M1210 and in an effort to find out about it, I assisted Dells team whilst we changed my motherboard 3 times, fan and heatsink 3 times, cpu 3 times, hdd 3 times, dvd twice and battery twice. All parts functioned perfectly without a squal elsewhere.
The problem actually goes back all the way to 1993 with Dell and hits all different processors. The processor tradtionally hit the least with this is AMD which I wonder why they have never used this as a selling point for their company.
In anycase, the Pavilions and M1330s seem to be the two most recent hard hit with the M1210 before that. Polls on this ste for both show a whopping 47-50% of new systems have this.
Adjusting the sleep state or using RM Clock does reduce the noise but, it will also reduce battery life by up to an hour; not a good solution for a brand new machine.

The way I got rid of my computer's noise was from a similar thread, a genius there gave a step by step method of how to configure RMclock to stop the noise without significantly reducing battery life. Here is the link:

Hope this helps. -
I am wonder if the newer dv6000t has this problem because mine should be here Wensday.
-
Hey all...
This is indeed a very interesting thread.
I just got a new HP Pavilion DV6415 and you guessed it there was a high pitched noise coming from the CPU.
I have installed RMclock at the noise has been reduced - still there though. However RMclock lists the core temp. at 60-65 degrees.
Cant figure out if this is too high? Any ideas?
Cheers! -
I have been worrying that my HP6000t that I have ordered will have this problem but after researching it more it seems like other manufactures are having the same issue.
BTW is the noise really bad or is it something that is really not bad and could be lived with? -
Mine shipped with no noise.
-
my sister bought her dv6000t around march or april, i forgot. but when the rooms real quiet, the high pitched noise is noticeable, at least to me. my sister hasn't complained. people say it's coming from the intel core duo processors. try the RM CPU solution if you hear the whining noise.
-
Ive got this problem on my newly bought Amilo V3205, the funny thing is the noise gets worse when plugging in usb mouse.
When I run it without the battery the noise is much less however it can still sometimes be noticable.
Anyone can help me? this laptop is simila to the Si 1520 in components. -
:confused2:
:twitcy:  so turn up the radio
BTW hp & intel are going to have to start make laptop bags that fit radios. -
-
honestly, its not that bad on mine, i feel that the quiet whir of the fan helps to cancel the pitch out
-
hi everyone,
i'm new to the boards and i recently received my 2500t. i get what sounds like electrical signals when i'm in a quiet room. i guess you can say that the electrical signals i hear sound high piteched. i hear it both when the laptop is idle or when i'm doing work on it. and it does sound a little louder when it runs on battery. is this the high pitched buzzing noise everyone is talking about?
thanks! -
AMDs do the same thing, but under load and not low power state. My flatmate has a COMPAQ. So its INTEL and AMD.
-
-
I eliminated the noise (DV9260NR) by upgrading to bios ver F.27 and setting the CPU C4 function to "disable". This has a very small impact on battery life in my experience and is well worth the small battery usage for the elimination of the whining notebook.
I apologize if this has been mentioned already, didn't scan all 47 pages. -
-
ugh...i had this problem with my old zd8000....i knew it was rf interference or an improperly grounded audio wiring in the computer...but an atttempt to get the overseas cso's to help me out drove me nuts so i just lived with it...lucky my new dv9500t doesn't have the problem.

-
Well I've had my laptop for about one week. At first I didn't notice any noise at all, but then last night I heard it, but it was really faint.. I'll be looking into it a little more though.
-
I bought my HP Pavillion laptop in August of this year, 2 weeks after I had it I could stand the noise no longer so I sent it away for repair, got it back 10 days later with the noise even louder! Sent it away again the next day and I've only just got it back still with the whine! 3 months this has been going on and now I'm trying to get Comet to give me my money back, I shall take them to court if I have to because I am not putting up with this dreadful noise. Currently I am on my cousins Dell which is wonderfully silent.
-
This is really an Intel issue, and a class action lawsuit is likely coming in the near future.
-
-
-
so pretty much the fix is... nothing, get a mac?
-
Macs have the problem too. It's any system with a C2D in it.
-
err..i also got a very loud and noisy sound when i tried to enter the bios setting in my dv6500t
and also when i try to boot to safe mode..and that really bothers me -
its very annoying. makes me want to sacrifice the speed for a single core just so it is quiet.

I find that RM Clock freezes my computer. The USB hub thing doesn't work either. The one thing that does though is a program called CPU Burn In. Stops the noise straight away. But like has been said before, I shouldn;t have to run a third party program to stop this morse code like noise in the first place!
Are there any laptops out there that do NOT make this dreadful noise? -
Apparently not. I picked up a Lifebook T2010 in lieu of a Vaio TZ and Portege r500. Initially the problem was a constant and obnoxious fan. Once I took care of that, it unmasked the constant high-frequency whining noise. So far, the RM thing, the BIOS thing, and disabling the Step thing in the BIOS has not solved the problem.
-
hi, wanna ask, how big this noise is acceptable, i mean, if i can barely hear it when i put my ear close to the keyboard, is it OK? or should there be NO WHINING??even if it is just a little is it a problem???
-
I think it is unacceptable. It is of unsatisfactory quality in my opinion. I received an email from Intel just now and they say that they are aware of the problem and are working on a solution, but as yet there is no ETA on one.
I think that consumers should be made aware of the problem before they purchase a new laptop, if they were I feel that no one would be buying the products and Intel would have to find a solution pretty darn quick if that were the case. I can't help but feel they are dragging their feet and hoping this issue will go away.
(It doesn't actually effect the running of the machine, just how long you want to be on it for!) -
i listened to cpu sound on Acer and Asus laptops and their sound is quite same as mine running on battery, so i hope it is ok, i was worried about that when i put Always ON battery power management because the sound was louder but know as i mentioned before i can only hear it when i put my ear on a keyboard..
-
Does anyone here own Turion 64 x2 mobile TL-60 and does it make the noise?
-
The V6000TX definitely made this noise (it was the only laptop with XP that HP made -- and I don't think they make it any longer). I just got a dv9500t (which comes with Vista) and I do not hear the noise. I plan to put XP on this machine instead, so hopefully that won't bring the noise on somehow -- but I've been told by others who have put XP on this machine that they do not get the noise either.
-
Any fixes? -
okay first time here and i just need the answer for this annoying noise.
is there a way to stop it?
if not, what should i do to this darn computer. if i send it back to hp can they fix it?
or should i sell my laptop and buy a differetn one.
i have a hp pavillion dv6000 speical edition, this site doesn't seem to have my comptuer. more specifically dv6452se -
-
same problem...i have a hp dv9000z amd athlon tk53. very high pitch noise it stops when i scroll but comes right up again.. and its plugged in all the time. any help? i want to stop my ears from bleeding
-
Intel really needs to step up on this one. Good thing for them they have no real competition right now, or I bet they would.
-
so is there a solution to this??
-
READ the thread. The answer is NO. BOTH AMD and Intel chips have this problem to some extent. RM Clock is a program that has been known to help. If this doesn't work for you, then you should return it and try another model.
-
that sucks...its weird though i just bought new seapkers for my dv9000z the the annyoing eeeeeeeeeeeeee sound can be heard through the speakers only its been magnifiyed 10x. my ears are gonna fall off..i know its not the speakers beacuse when i plugg it into my ipod i dont hear the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
i will try RM clock -
Dude after a while it doesnt even phase me anymore--dont worry about it and enjoy your laptop
-
so ok tryed rm clock and does not work guess im stuck
-
Good news everyone.
There is a fix now:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00965412&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=3433045
I just tried it and fixed it for myself!
Works! -
I just got a new dv9644ca and i hear no sound whatsoever coming from the notebook during idle or something that is cpu intensive.
-
-
I just updated to the latest bios for Intel and it helps A LOT with the noise...I didn't really get the high-pitched fan noise but the fan was really LOUD. Now, the noise is more like ambient waves gently rolling in the ocean...MUCH, MUCH more tolerable...FINALLY !
-
I had a dv6500t in my possesion for over a week and it is silent. Maybe you just a defective model?
