This isn't new. I didn't mention it because I did not have the link to it handy and I just couldn't explain it as well as they did. This was mentioned earlier in this thread, but I wouldn't have read the whole thread to find it either. I am glad it is working for the Intel users.

Im glad that my unit is very silent during idle and at full load.

hi, can anyone upload that fix from hp website?? (that bios F.16 version) cause i cant download it!!! hmmm.

I feel like I've tried just about everything on this thread. RM clock, upgraded the BIOS and Disabled the C4. It's still making that noise though, and it's driving me nuts!
I'm running Vista Home Premium on an hp pavilion dv6000.
Any other info out there? -
I suggest you sell it, buy a new notebook, and make sure it's from a place you can return it if it's got problems.
Seriously, there really should be a class action lawsuit against Intel for this. -
Does the new Santa Rosa platform have the whine?
-
I got a santa rosa notebook and I don't have the issue

Does IT have it? -
I just got my new HP6700 in the mail today. It is making that noise. It's terrible.
I'm trying to download that fix, but the .exe link won't work:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp34501-35000/sp34782.exe
Is that server timing out for anyone else? -
I obviously haven't read all the posts in this thread, but we DO KNOW WHY this happens right?
"They have been known to emit an annoying high-pitched whine, identified as being caused by the CPU alternating between low-power and high-power states"
I've experienced it too, but I put up with it... -
so i had to send my laptop in for repair on the quicklaunch volume buttons(malfunction- lights wouldnt turn on and keys would not work at all sometimes ), and they replaced my system board/motherboard and now the highpitched noise is barely noticeable. The C4 function in the bios was enabled when it came back from repair and the usb power save feature was selected as well as the bluetooth. So i am happy to no longer have the high pitched sound from my pc. I just wanted to share my experience, it may help some of you i hope !
-
When I sent my hp 9225 off to hp for a new motherboard because it wouldn't boot, it did not have a high pitched whine. When it came back, it whined intermittently and seemingly at random, except that it would whine whenever using the touchpad scrollbar. Very quiet, but annoying whine. Read this forum and it seemed most people were complaining about a constant whine. Then I remembered that when I sent it to hp, the quickplay buttons across the top of the keyboard had the sound turned off by default, and when it came back they were turned on. I turned the sound off (go into setup-f10 at boot) and now the whine is gone. The buttons no longer beep when I touch them, but that's preferable to the whining.
-
That is not the noise that this thread is about, it's about CPU whine, which is a common problem with all manufacturers using Intel CPUs.
-
The weird thing is that both laptops have stopped doing that sound.
I do not remember why it happened to the first one since it is going back one year and I have tried everything and I do not know what made it stop but the new laptop stopped as soon as I formatted it and installed a fresh copy of windows vista prem it stopped whine. Not totally but it is much better than it used to be. (I recall now that I had formatted also my old laptop before stopping this whine noise)
I am guessing that there is software that is controlling the frequency of the step from C3 to C4 and the sound is not actually the fact that the processor is going to C4 but the fact that the processor is hoping between these two states at a frequency with is in the acoustic range.
This is the only explanation I can give; since I have not altered any of the hardware and also my attempts with bios upgrade didn't seem to stop the problem.
I also remember that when I got the new laptop it was not whine. It only started the next days and after I have downloaded all the vista updates from the internet.
I hope that this can help since I believe it is a matter of energy state of the C2D between the C1,2,3,4 etc but the sound comes from the repeated change between adjacent states. (i.e. C3 to C4 at a frequency which is audible).
If anyone has any news about it please tell me. -
ya thats fine, but what if i am running vista and all these boxes are checked off anyway and i still have the noise?
Thanks -
-
i had the same problem on my dell xps 1530, and it seems that the sound came from processor, because RMClock solved the problem, that was posted here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1580895&postcount=80
Thanks Diarmaid ! -
Does anyone knows at least one brand and model that does NOT make the whine sound???
I want to replace my laptop which is whine too much but i need to know which are the ones that do not whine.
Thank you -

Hi guys!
I have the same high pitched sound problem( I recently bought an HP 6715s TL-58, 2GB RAM, ATI X1250, 120GB Hitachi HDD and I can hear that sound coming out from the notebook, and when I plug it in I can hear the same sound coming out of the power brick also. It's very annoying! I would appreciate any kind of help! Thank you!
LE: The VGA Out also is distorted by this(
-
The problems you experiencing do not appear to be what this thread is about. The noise problem this thread is about is what's known as "CPU whine", and only occurs when the CPU goes into a lowered power state.
You should go ahead and start a new thread to address your particular problems. -
Yes, it's definitely the "CPU whine" because if I start Prime95 Stress Test the sound stops. After I stop the Prime95 instances I can hear the sound again. If I go on battery power then the sound is even louder. I do have the extra sound in the AC/DC brick and it's identical to the one in the notebook.
Somebody confirmed in this thread that this whining causes VGA Output distorsion (I nearly threw my 17" LCD out the window), and I noticed this effect too.
And another effect that I noticed is that, rarely, I get a black screen (the backlight of the LCD stays on), and it freezes. The only thing that helps is pressing the power button for a few seconds to shut down the notebook.
PS: Sorry for my bad english and I hope you understand what I'm trying to say! -
HP has released a BIOS update for some models that is supossed to take care of the CPU whine, so check for yours. Also some people have had success using a program called RMclock to disable the offending power state.
btw, your English is great, I understand everything you said without a problem. -
I already have the latest BIOS and running the HLT instruction when IDLE still doesn't help
-
Do HP notebooks purchased today on HP's website still have the whine?
-
i got a HP at around Christmas time and i don't have a whine, specs below

Hi,
I am a power supply engineer. I also happened to own a DV9288EA (UK version) that has recently died - its GPU has failed. I also noticed that it makes a high pitched tone, especially on battery or when scrolling. I believe that the issue may be related to power supply instability, where the PSU oscillates under certain load and supply conditions. This is indicative of a poor PSU design and may be responsible for laptops failing as the output voltage(s) of the PSU will have a sinusoid (or similar waveform) superimposed on it. In extreme cases this can cause cyclic overvoltage events to sensitive logic. If this is the case then I am not surprised that HP are being very quiet about it. Has anyone looked at the PSU? As mine is now dead I cannot. -
Yes, my PSU brick also has this whine coming out of it. But that's all I can say...I don't know much about PSU's.
-
I've only just started to get this CPU whine and its bloody annoying, I've got an nc8430 - has anyone found that the bios update helps?
-
Dan89:
If you want, try using RM Clock to fix the whining problem.
Took me 15 minutes to configure, but now it works perfectly, and no more whining!
If anyone wants, I could post screenshots of my configurations in RM Clock. -

Hi
I have big startup problems with HP dv6365eu
I bougt it on 19 june 2007
On 19 februari 2008 i brought it back to the store Dynabite.
The real time clock didn't worked anymore.
They sent it to the Service Planet.
It was ready after (!) 7 weeks.
They changed SPS-LCD Back Cover, PAV and
BD, SYS UM FF VST (SUB ASSY) motherboard.
Since then i have a problems with startup.
I needed the notebook for my exams, so i decided this time to send it to HP services.
The services had taken up to 2 weeks, they changed a Hard Drive.
The problem with startup are still going on.
I'm calling HP, they promissed to call me back.
They don't call.
I'm very disappointed in HP. -
I cannot be arsed to look thru the 54 pages of this thread, but i'm pretty sure i got a solution to this problem. So far it has worked on my pavilion dv9332ea.
Try this:

Good luck, boys. -

I know I'm bringing back an old thread but I've been Googling for a while tonight. My new Gateway (build date is the last week of 7/2008) has the C2D whine. It's not too too bad but still a little annoying. I'm debating whether or not to exchange it but I don't want to end up with one that's worse! The only reason why I am contemplating just living with this is that I won't be able to find another C2D T7500 laptop for under $500 again.
I'll probably try that RMclock trick.. -
Add the Elitebook 6930p with Mobility Radeon HD3450 to the whining party. I've gotten 3 that has this whine and even RM Clock can't cure it. It seems to whine even worse when the CPU is working. This is a Core 2 Duo P8600. HP support seems to classify this as "normal" but is unable to explain what exactly causes it. They seem to say that its due to the fan or the HDD. But even if I remove the HDD and do a linux boot from CD-ROM, the noise is still there.

If you are using an AMD processor, downgrade your BIOS version to F.3D (SP38061: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2100&product=3340173). Also, disable virtualization technology in the BIOS if it's enabled. This BIOS version installs on XP x32/x64, 2003 x32/x64, Vista x32/x64, 2008 x32/x64 and 7 x32/x64. I tried it on both Server 2003 and Windows 7. Good luck!

I have a new problem I just got the laptop about
three months..
There is a high pitch to sound coming from around the fan around,
and where is plug in the power cord the screen keep going bright
and then bim.. and the battery sign show that it is plug in AC then
switch back to battery and keep do that.
Also when I plug in the AC power cord the funny sricking noise or
high pitch noise from the computer [around the fan and where the
AC power plug into].
Thanks I welcome again suggestion right now..
you can email me on [email protected] or just reply.... i guess
Thanks again.. -
I posted a thread 2-3 month ago, I have a MSI GX 720 and had this horrible high pitched sound when not using turbo mode. the RMClock fixed this problem. Thanks you, at last, (that sound was so annoying and audible, that not hearing it is actually taking some acustoming to...)

I got a new HP G70 -120 Laptop in January 2009 from Currys
Since this time it has developed the "whine" - tbh actually turning into a scream now(very annoying)
I emailed HP in March about the problem and they told me to run test, update the BIOS etc - none of which work
They thentold me that a "representative" would phone mewithin a day.
Never happened.
I phoned them and coudnt get through to anybody. Surprise?
Anyway, the next time I had any life to devote to this I looked around and found the 55 pages of forum here - very helpful because it confirmed my suspicions that it coudnt jsut have been me experiencing these problems.
Another problem I have is with the keyboard. It is excruciatingly slow to type and it misses charaters all of the time - this post may be wrtten eratically.
Anyway back to the matter at hand.
I emailed them back again with the old ticket number and they agreed that nothing has since happened.
They then sent me out a new hard disk , but as I suspected it had no effect on the noise.
Now they want to send the notebook in for service to replace the CPU fan. Ill give it a shot but I still doubt that it will cure the whining and slow irresponsive keyboard problem.
With regards to RMClock, it is a godsend as it gets rid of the worst of the nose however I refuse thatfor my laptop to be non-irritating it has t run at 100% CPU all of the time - and this obviously sacrafices battery. -
I have HP LAPTOP 17 --Dv7-1132 AMD Turion X2 RM-70Dual-Core Mobile , ATI Radeon, ram 4GB, it has noise and whining sound problem came from top left corner where is the cpu and buzzing sound from the AC adaptor , after 2 months with many trials with hp customer service online and through phone calls support who would not able to do any thing, I sent it back to HP customer services . but I am very disappointed after wasting my time, they did not fix the problem , I ve got my laptop returned back without solving the whining problem
I was advised from many feed back from HP forum to return it back again , and they suggest to ask HP to change the cheep mother board, Is there anyone have same problem. Any suggestions will be appreciated -
Are you sure about this ver F.3Dof bios , as the only versions I found for my AMD DV7-1132 at HP WEB are F.46 F.44 F.43 F.41 F.35 F.33 F.22

My HP died last week after 1.5 years. Since HP doesn't offer more than 1 year warranty, I can't do anything right now.
-
Some credit cards offer an extra year of warranty. Maybe you used one and you don't even know?
Anyway get one. It's a good backup plan.
