Just curious. Mine was delivered without the noise. How can we compare components or settings to see why mine does not whine? Perhaps we can ID the component or setup?

sweet! if we all accept this poor design without contempt, then we can expect to continue to get this poor design in the future.

considering the design of my 5 year old laptop allowed it to perform well for its era and didn't produce any such noise, i have no problem returing my current C2D laptop in hopes of receiving another that isn't quite as annoying. remember, most of us aren't extreme gamers or graphic designers. i would gladly give up this high pitch noise if it meant i had to have a slower processor where i couldn't perform functions i wasn't going to be doing anyways. but i wanted the 64 bit technology (which will eventually be need instead of want) and therefore i'm stuck with it. maybe we will see some changes with Santa Rosa.

If it is, as others have speculated, a problem with MoBo design, then it is very likely that no [permanent] solution will be found (short of a recall by HP).

I install XP Pro on my dv9207 with dual boot option. I only hear the noise in Vista OS, but not in XP Pro.

    Dude, check your caps lock...

Don't think your problem is what this thread is about. The whining sound doesn't go on and off every 30 seconds and it's got nothing to do with a loud fan (that is probably just running too fast - search for NHC aka Notebook Hardware Control, that should allow you to take control over your fan so you can adjust it's speed).

Take it back now! Get you money and run!
Call HP and order a customized unit and you will most likely get a fresh built unit straight from China.
The retail stores have access to warehouses with no telling how long they have been sitting there.

that's actually when mine started making the "eeeeeee" noise; after i installed Vista. it was doing fine for the first couple months with XP. i just figured Vista had different power settings, which was causing the cpu to run differently. but then again....i don't know what i'm talking about :confused2:

Does anyone if HP can fix this problem? I was on the phone today with them and they want me to send it in to them.. Has anyone here sent their laptops back to HP because of the noise and gotten it fixed by them?
I hope they can do something, this noise is brutal.

As has been discussed previously, this is NOT an HP problem but related to the Core 2 Duo processor. See http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1179846 as an example. That link has an Acer and a Dell user comment about it. See previous posts about solutions (bios update, usb change).

Yeah they provided a paid shipping label and everything, so I'm thinking to send it in and see what they can do with it. Hopefully it doesn't come back with more problems.

It might not be an HP problem, but it is an HP notebook so they should be able to do soemthing about it either way.

Yeah HP provided a paid shipping label, so I'm thinking I'll probably do that. Hopefully it doesn't come back with anymore new problems and they actually fix the noise.

It might not be a direct HP problem but they should still be able to do something about it.

Well, You should not have to fix something thats brand new. And for info purposes write down all the numbers so you can tell if it is a new one or not.

Mine was delivered silent. It's amazing how we cannot get a scientific hard fact discription of the phenominon.

    Everyone I think I may have found a simple solution to this.... at least it works for me on my HP 9000series Pav (running Vista Ultimate);

    1. Go to Power Options
    2. Select your Power Setting
    3. Click "Change advanced power settings"
    4. Open up the "USB Settings" parent tree node
    5. Open up the "USB selective suspend setting" child tree node
    6. Make sure both "On battery" and "Plugged in" are "Enabled"

That's it! I couldn't be bothered trawling through every reply so sorry if this has been posted already.

Just throwing in my experiences... I've had 2 dv9000t systems, and on both of them I've had this high-pitched whine. On the first one it seemed to go away when my wireless switch was "ON", but honestly I was having other problems with it, so I wasn't really paying attention. On this one it's always there.

I have tried many of the suggestions here, and so far the only thing working for me is the RMClock solution. When using this method, rmclock reports the CPU is 0.4-2 degrees hotter when HLT is enabled, but I can't be certain that this isn't because of some other process running on there as well. The sound was making me nauseous, so this is a good fix for me.

I received a new DV9220US this week and immediately heard the whine. I retrieved the F16 bios and disabled C4 mode and still heard the whine.

I downloaded RMClock and by checking the HLT mode I was able to eliminate the whine (at the expense of 100% CPU usage to RMclock.exe in vista). Unfortunatly after about 2 hours I will come back to see that my Vista start menu and taskbar have horrible artifacts (start menu items are missing).

Has anyone experienced this with RMclock?

Just to understand. Is this problem with Core 2 Duo's or just certain manufacturers? If I wait till May 8th to buy a Centrino Pro laptop, will it NOT buzz?

I just got my laptop and only noticed a whine during the setup for vista, but none when I was using it. Nor did I notice any during the setup or use of winxp. I'm using the f.17 bios, I just uploaded this to a thread if anyone's interested.

ALL of them will have this problem, according to the description of it. This problem is caused by the CPU, not the laptop specifically. If you bought a core 2 duo from gateway, it will sounds just the same as a core 2 duo from HP. Just install RMclock, or try disabling CPU C4 in the BIOS, and it will go away.

The problem comes from intel, so it's up to them to fix it.

well. i bought hp dv6365 with intel and exchanged it to the dv6353 with turion 64x2 and it makes the same sound. the only difference is that the sound goes on and off every couple of minutes while in the previous one the sound was going on constantly. it is so depressing.

Hmm? Now it's starting to sound like capacitors are loading up. This has been mentioned here before as a suspect cause and doing it across two diffrent CPU types has me thinking the same.
The cycling tells me they are reaching the top of threshold, draining down and filling up again. The ones that do not cycle must be cheap-o capacitors or are rated higher than the power can supply to reach the top of the threshold.

Arrrgh! What a pain it must be knowing it is the same on 'Dell and the others. I'm glad mine is quiet. I would have to ship her back and buy one off the shelf they let me listen to first.

im new here and just found out about this buzz noise for laptops
i was planning to get a Dell e1505 or hp dv6000t but now that i heard about this it makes me not want to get a laptop now that might get me annoyed
i am wondering actually about how many people are actually getting this whine noise out of all those that are sold, since most of the ones who have problems post on the forum, and most of them that dont get the whine, dont even know about it , so im just wondering

even thought there are some fixes, i dont really want to have the laptop on max when i leave it on overnight

does many of the dell have this problem too since i mostly see only hp laptops, hope there will be a fix and instead of using that R.. program (forgot the name)

The norm is more post with problems than praise. The ratio of said is beyond me. Mine is quiet.
I would like to know if the 2.0GHz units get it also. There is a common factor but it seems only the MFG's know what it is.

I just got mine and it's running right next to me on another desk. I can hear the high pitched noise everybody is talking about just barely. If y'all are complaining about that noise, and the fan, you must be just looking for something to complain about because it's not THAT noticable.

If you want to upgrade your Vista to a higher version you put her in and go and it prompts you to pay I think.
But I read here you can use it to do a current version clean install with your present key number but there is a sequence to follow. I'm not ready so I have not studied up on it much yet.

As for the dreaded "eeeeeeeee" sound, I guess I'm very lucky, since the week-old dv6000 doesn't have that (so far, anyway).

It does have, though, a hyperactive fan and a persistent pop-up about how I'm supposedly "running out of space in the HP Recovery Drive (D :). Anyone else have these problems and any good solutions? HP doesn't seem to have a clue about either one.

Fan cycles on and off more often than any laptop I've even used before. I ordered direct from HP and my unit has the Intel Core Duo T5600 1.83 processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB, Brightview Screen, Lightscribe, webcam, NVidia Go 7400 graphics card, yada yada yada, all running on Vista Business. I was leery of Vista, but have a network in the office where everyone's on XP Pro-SP2 (as I was), and had a tough time finding the type of laptop I wanted with XP Pro on it. HP people swore up and down Vista Business would play nice with the other computers; we'll see. But that's another issue.

Anyway, the left-side palm rest on this unit gets a bit warm after some use, but nothing to think twice about. But even when just browsing online or working in MS Word, the fan cycles on and off a LOT. It's not all that loud, mind you -- in fact, I'd rather it just stay on all the time, frankly -- but this constant cycling is enough to drive me nuts. Though maybe that's only because I'm not also dealing with a hi-pitched whine, and those of you who are have my deepest sympathy!

And then there's this stupid pop-up about the D drive. Comes up each time I boot up, and then periodically thereafter, with no pattern I can see. I have to say, while I've been online this afternoon, browsing through the forum and posting this message, I haven't seen it. But saw it earlier today, sometimes several times in just a few minutes.

Of course, being only semi-literate with computers, I wasn't even aware of the 'partition' when I first got this unit, so I certainly didn't put anything there or mess with it at all, as far as I know. HP guy had me select "E drive" as my destination for backing up data, on the theory that the Windows Automatic Backup tool might be set to send everything to D drive (and it appears that was the case). However, this has not stopped the message from coming up. Sigh.

Anyone have any luck dealing with either of these issues? I'd really hate to have to send this back and start my laptop search all over again, partly because I really love this laptop overall. So any ideas from those more knowledgeable than me (in other words, about 98% of the people who post here!) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Obviously because it's not a problem for *YOU*, then everyone else is stupid and don't know what they are talking about. That's always the best way to approach a problem.

These fixes do NOT put the laptop on "max", whatever that means. If you run CPU-Z or RMclock and monitor the CPU GHz, it still downclocks to 1GHz as usual. This fix supposedly is disabling some power features, but it's certainly not running at full speed all the time.

I just purchased a new 9210ca 4 weeks ago. For the last three weeks, it's been at HP while they try to fix my webcam issue. Apparently it works intermittently with MSN Messenger or Muvee5.0. I only notice a high pitch noise when the webcam does work. I'm expecting to receive my laptop back from service and will advise if I still hear the pitch.

Well, I've just been sitting here for the past week listening to everybody complain about how bad this whinning sound is, so I'm expecting a swarm of bees when I turn it on. So when I get it, it's not nearly as pronounced as most of you complain about.

I started to notice it after a while. At first, you are just excited that you have your new system, and you are probably playing with it a lot. It makes new sounds than the computer you had before, like different fans, etc... After you get used to it, you will start to notice some of the things that seem out of place. The whine became very obvious to me when I started to get a headache and then realized it.

It can also depend on your environment. If you're in a quiet place, you will notice it much more. If you have it sitting next to your current computer, and have the tv or music on, and are in a college dorm or next to a busy road, it might be drowned out.

But all in all, you can't look at a 30 page thread and say there's nothing going on there.

I agree but you can't say they all do it either. I'm not implying you are saying such, just adding in. Mine has no whine.

well i got tired of using RMClock. Doesn't work properly in vista, every time u restart u gotta manually load it. Plus it always put a 50% load on each core. Doesn't seem to be a good fix if u care bout performace.

I flashed to 1.6 Bios. Well that was a pain, knocked out my Vista install, so had to temporarily reinstall it on the harddrive and backup my data. finally reformated and put only 1 install on, the whine seems to be better.

So flash to 1.6 seems like the way to go, just make sure u guys backup data. I ran the winflash and right after couldn't boot into windows.
