When I was still considering the Envy 14 I contacted HP Canada about the warranty. I was told that support for US models would come from the US, so any RMA would require shipping the laptop to the US. My only question is if there would be any issues having it shipped back.
The company that was looking into getting me a US custom order Envy was Insight.ca. They don't usually deal with home users, more corporate/ enterprise clients. They are still looking into seeing if that can get custom Envys. In any case I went with the Elitebook 8440w instead. Good specs (for what I do), 3 year warranty, lighter then the Envy 14 and amazing build quality.

I went in-store to futureshop today and saw the envy 14 and i have to say the cover doesn't look anywhere near as bad as some people make it out to be. I think I'll bite the bullet and order from the guy on ebay since I doubt I'll be able to get it any cheaper up here for a long time. I'll let you guys know how it goes in about a week or so when I get my next paycheck.
-
Okay, let me know how to order process goes for you. The eBay guy seemed trustworthy and has a good reputation. I may order from him too if you have a good experience.

so has it been confirmed that the Hp envy 1050-ca has the 1600 * 900 display for sure or was it just a one-off? My dad is going canada soon so i would like him to pick up one of these guys... though i'd prefer the i5-450m over the i5-430m, are there much differences between the two?

I have to say though, the bilingual keyboard doesn't sit too well with me. The prospect of dishing another hundred something to get the english keyboard or living with a premium laptop with a keyboard that doesn't match the keys irks me to say the least. -
Also, anyone know how the general process of getting extended warranty from your credit card goes? Are there catches? -
It seems as though lots of people are in the same boat as me. I have been looking for a laptop for the past month online and have noticed how some brand names like Acer, Asus, HP, with exceptions being Sony, Dell and Apple (customizing an Apple is way overpriced I noticed), has no customization on their Canadian site and instead chooses to sell pre-configured laptops to the local dealers like Bestbuy etc for way too much money. I have also noticed that they are all the crappiest configurations possible and it is truly hard to find a decent laptop. I for one don't like paying top dollar for a laptop that isnt exactly that. I get the feeling that they think Canadians are stupid. Anyway for those looking for a way to order a good HP Envy 14 with good internals from the US site or any US only shipped item, there is a place in Niagara Falls, like 5 mins from the border on th US side that can recieve your packages (you put their shipping info on the order) and hold it for you to pick up for 5 bucks per package (They don't forward packages to Canada). For those like me who live close to Niagara Falls, this provides a great alternative for the unfortunate US shipping only. Their site is U.S. Address. check it out if you're interested
-
I forgot to mention that one downside to this method is that HP does business in almost every state and considering NY has taxes, you will be charged NY taxes and then taxes again when bringing it over the border (assuming you declare it). I'm pretty sure there isn't duty as well on laptops but it still comes out to a couple hundred bucks taxes on a $1400 laptop which sucks yes but is still cheaper than here all together for a better configured laptop.
-
US address is what I used $5 and they hold it for a week? Deal and a half.
Brought my Envy over, configured at $1200, I paid $143 taxes at the border. No duties, technology is not dutiable.
So overall, close to $1400.
Still better than $1700 from BestBuy/FutureShop and I have better specs. -
I was able to get my local BestBuy to price match pc-computer.com, which sells it for $1433.99. In the end I paid $1508.84 after everything. I'm happy with it.

If there was still any doubt about Envy 14's screen res in Canada..
http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...ews-all-envy-canada-buyers-5.html#post6504743. Pics of the REAL resolution. It's 1600x900There's also pics of the keyboard in that thread too.
And you can do what iNoob did above; PM a much cheaper online store (google envy 14 1050-ca canada...within 10 minutes you'll probably find at least a half dozen stores selling the Envy 14 for close to $1400) at FS or BB. -
I would be all up for getting it from bb or FS... i just hate the bilingual keyboard
-
-
so the keyboard only comes in bilingual?
-
As far as I know, yes.
-
Well since HP went and jacked up the price for the better screen, I'm going to borrow some cash and get it today. I'm not going to risk the guy raising the price by a hundred bucks/paying an extra hundred for the better screen.

I just want to say this again for Canadians looking at the Envy 14, to maybe take a loot at the Elitebook 8440w. I've had mine for just over a week and have been very happy with it. Lighter, cheaper, 3 year warranty, great build quality and faster with more ports on it, seems like the best and better alternative unless you want to do gaming, which I don't. The only thing the 8440w doesn't have is the back lit keyboard, rather it had a ThinkPad style lamp at the top of the screen that works really well. it also has displayport (full size) over HDMI, but I just bought an displayport to HDMI adapter and it is fine.
Just want to put that out there for people as a viable alternative that's easy to get in Canada. -
I could get somebody from the states to order this for me. I'll only have to make the trip down there and pick it up. If I take everything out the packaging and put them into my luggage, I can avoid customs/duties/taxes/etc right? I know they are strict at the border, but surely you can just say you brought this from home, right? Anybody have experiences?

I think I'm leaning more towards the DV6T. It's $500 cheaper, and it's got pretty much the same specs, aside from the resolution and probably battery life. But yeah, it sucks that we can't customize our laptops here in Canada. -

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
Alright well I ordered my laptop from the states and have it here in Canada (long story)
Thing is, I have a problem with it (CPU whine) So I cannot return it. I was just talking with HP canada and he changed my laptop to be a Canadian, using an alias. Now their system thinks my laptop is a Canadian, even though I purchased it in the states, and it isn't even available in Canada.
Now all I have to do is call HP canada, just like I would if I bought this laptop from Canada, and I am able to get it repaired here in Canada, good to know if you want to purchase it from the states.
I also got quoted on extended warrenties:
2 Year additional warrenty (equals 3 years) + accidental damage
= $279.99
That is actually a pretty good price for 3 years of free repair and accidental damage -
ah man... does anyone if the best buy stores (in toronto) still carry envy 14 and it's just their website that doesn't have it anymore??
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
I know their futureshop on Queensway still has the envy 14. Bestbuy I do not know. \
-
Man, I'd be a little pissed if the Envy 14 in Best Buy is getting replaced with something better. On the other hand, I'd be very glad I bought this ahead of time if they replace it with the lower-end screen (which wasn't available before).

Hey tornbacchus what number did u call and what did u say to them?
-
Hey.
I have bought HP Envy 14 from the US.
Can the warranty be used with HP Canada?
Please let me know. -
Check this link. The guy contacted HP Canada and had them port over the Serial number.

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
Yes, that would be me
I bought my laptop in the US, and brought it over to Canada.
Once the laptop is in Canada, you now always contact HP Canada. They will give your US laptop a Canadian Alias (Canadian model number) so It will be recognized as a Canadian laptop.
I believe the US model number is 14-1000-CTO (Custom to order) I think.
My Canadian model number for my laptop is 14-1050CA.
It works perfectly. I have 1 year warranty, and my laptop is in for service as we speak in Canada. I am also considering getting the extra 2 year warranty + accidental damage for $279.
It was no hassle at all talking to HP Canada to change over my laptop. It's now just like I bought my laptop in Canada, but saving $800
Also, the number that I called was:
1-800-474-6836.
I talked to Robert, who actually lives in Canada, and was much more knowledgeable than the US CS.
PS: If you want the extra warranty, you purchase it separately through HP Canada AFTER you have your laptop. DO NOT purchase the HP US warranty when buying your laptop. It will not work, and the Canadian warranty is cheaper as well. -
Aright I called HP Canada, and they told me that I can use the warranty in Canada aswell as I bought the laptop from US.
As my DVD Drive is not working properly, they are sending me a replacement, but I will have to install it myself. -
Since I live in Toronto, I think I'm just going to ship it to some place in Buffalo or Niagra Falls. What places did you guys use? I already have this one:
U.S. Address
But I don't know if it's credible or not. Any suggestions or opinions? -
hey guys, u do know that the envy 14 is offered through futureshop right?
lol
HP 14.5" Intel Core i5-430M Laptop (14-1050CA) - Silver - Future Shop
it is more expensive than in the US for sure though -
-
-
Just ordered mine from NCIX.com
1500$ shipping and taxes included, it's cheaper in the US, even with 150$ shipping, Brokerage and custom fees... But the Canadian model is prebuilt... so I'll have it by Monday probably.
It come with Radiance Display, 6gb of ram the i5-450M and a 640gb drive.
How to get an Envy 14" in Canada?
