So you're ordering in Canada from NCIX right? How did you get it down to $1500 after tax and shipping? I was able to get $1508 from Best Buy after taxes and recycling fee but that was after a price match.

Yeah I'm interested in how he was able to do that too, since I am days away from purchasing this laptop from them.

Also would you reccomend the express shipping with the RMA coverage?

    I dont think its necessary.

Pricematched at 1430, expresse shipping for like 8$ + 5%GST.

There's the link for pricematching ,

And yes ordering from Canada(would have customized it from HP site otherwise)

Umm for those who have shipped it from the US, how did you get HP to accept your credit card? I read that you have to change something before. Is it the address? If so, do you use the address of the place you're shipping it to?

I bought my laptop with a US credit card, and mailed it to a US address. I didn't do anything special except bring it across the border myself

I see, I see. Yea, I did the price match at Best Buy instead of online because I was afraid that if I end up having a problem with the laptop then I could easily exchange it. I did end up exchanging it for a second machine the same day (after the fan on the first one wouldn't stop running near max). You gotta give it to BB and FS for the super easy exchange policy.

Anyways, congrats on your purchase, I'm sure you will love this laptop as much as I do :D

NO fan issue at all with this one. Fan is essentially inaudible when doing light tasks. I found that with my first one the CPU was constantly spiking above 50% for no reason. I don't know why it was doing that...I even did a clean install but it didn't help. You should look into getting yours replaced. Where did you buy it from?

I bought it at NCIX since I live in Vancouver, but they have a terrible return policy. I didn't even get it at 1430 like another user instead paying 1501+tax.

I installed the latest bios firmware and i think it is a bit better, but definitely not perfect. I find the fan very noisy relative to the laptop it was suppose to be replacing. Pre-latest firmware it also seemed to be running way too hot at idle.

Can you check what version of the bios yours is running? I wonder if later builds had a different version. I'm hoping this isn't a mechanical issue...

I've attached cpu spike picture. I imagine this is what your original laptop faced. Does the replacement not suffer from these spikes?

It's not their fault really. I'm going to assume all they do is forward it so I'll assume they got it either on the 11th or 12th (it shipped on the 12th). It arrived to a place within walking distance from my house for processing on the evening of the 13th (I live in vancouver) and it's been stuck there since nothing gets done on weekends. Whether it comes on Monday the 16th or Tuesday the 17th is up to the shipping company.

That's very much like what my original one looked like. It would just keep spiking for no reason. My first one was running firmware F0.2 I think. I updated the firmware and it didn't do anything. Anyway, my current one doesn't have any issues. The CPU graph is essentially flat (random spikes to ~5% from background processes I guess). The reason why I didn't get it from NCIX or any online store is because of the hassle or returning it if there was a problem. Brick and mortar stores are known for much friendlier return policies and generally easier since you can just drive there anytime.

Just a question for all owners of the 1050ca. What is the battery life like? Do they give you the slice battery with this model?

And also is it 100% confirmed that it is indeed a Radiance display that is being used in this model (aside from the box, is there any way of knowing?). Thanks!

from all specs, it is indicated that the normal HD display with 1366x768 resolution is being used in the 1050ca model. NOT the radiance.

    is that a mistake?

k um quick question. How did everyone here pay for their US shipped Envy? Assuming that the bulk of you are from Canada, what did you do as a work around for the fact that HP only takes US credit cards and paypal?

I have a family friend down in the States who agreed to pay for it using their credit card. They're coming up to visit, so they'll just bring it with them, and I'm paying them back when they get up here. Pretty fortunate...

I thought this issue had been resolved...If your biggest concern is the radiance screen then I (and a couple other members) have already confirmed that the Canadian Envy 14 (1050ca) does have a radiance 1600x900 screen. It's beautiful. Typing on it right now. HP is retarded to in telling everyone that the Envy 14-1050ca has a non-radiance screen.

Any comments on the battery life? Do they include the slice battery and just out of curiosity how much extra does it add (and does it weight a lot?)?

    Thanks!

With 20% brightness, WiFi, Intel IGP, constant web browsing (I'm researching med school admission requirements, lol) I'm sitting at around 5 hours with 20% remaining in the battery. It should last about 6+ hours if I keep this up. It appears some users are getting much lower battery life than this though. It didn't come with slice battery so I can't comment on that. I'm assuming it can add quite a bit of heft to the laptop (~1lb?)

Wow! 5 hours?? That's not bad at all...I think you're probably one of the lucky ones. It's too bad that the slice isn't included with the Canadian models though.

I'm guessing you're in your 2nd or 3rd year of UNI? I once was looking into Medschool Admissions myself, lol. Good luck with your journey!

Ugh . My envy finally arrived today while I was at work(I still am) and according to my brother it came with the ty brightview screen, not the radiance. I'll try and get it sorted out once I get home but the fact that they charged me 1099 and gave me he screen they got for 999 pisses me off. Especially now when I found that the radiance display might be low on stock is killing me.

    Edit: Problem solved, scroll down.

oh yeah so i didnt mention to you guys but i actually picked one up last night and it was damaged out of the box (even though it was fully sealed). It had huge gaps, like someone had taken a flatheat and tried to pry it open and had scratches on the paisely design as well.

the screen hinge has a small chip on the left corner and it looked like someone tried to paint the chipped part silver after wards. I took it back without even starting er up. When i got the exchanged unit this morning thats when i got a good unit and decided to let u all know.

    Hello everyone!

I just read from some of you in this thread that the HP Envy 14-1050ca does come with a Radiance display with a resolution of 1600x900.

    Can you confirm me this?

All websites I found selling it including NCIX states that it comes with a 1366x768 display...

    Thanks!

Grats man! This offers at least some compensation to price they are charging.

And if you can get the Xbox to sell online for over $100 (presuming you can) this then beats any Canadian retailers pricematch atm!

I just picked up the Envy 14 from my local futureshop and it does have the 1600x900 screen! The screen is awesome, and HD videos look AND sound great with the beats audio. Although the FS website is says it has the low res screen, it does actually have the high res screen as other posters have noted. I also got the Xbox which I will be selling since I'll be doing the gaming on this machine.

Got mine from Future Shop as well and the free Xbox 360 (loving Assassin's Creed II). My only gripe, the french canadian keyboard takes a couple days to get used to.
