For you guys that bought a 14" Envy at FS or BB in Canada, do you guys have a regular keyboard layout or the annoying French-Canadian one? I hate the smaller shift and warped enter key.

After going through weeks and weeks of delays, me being lied to and such (read my post in the CPU whine thread) I suggest to not get the ENVY.

I actually suggest to stay away from HP all together. Do not buy their products unless you want 6 delays (and still counting) and absolutely no help from their CS.

If you have a problem with your laptop, HP WILL NOT do anything to help you. My laptop has been in for service for almost 4 weeks and I still do not have it back. They will not replace the laptop, give me in home service at their expense or do anything else that wont benefit them.

Once they get your money, and you are out of the 21 day return period, they do not give 2 $hits about you. They WILL NOT help you.

is there a reason everyone's getting theirs at Future Shop and not an online vendor for 150 cheaper? Does FS price match these places?

Bought from FS, 14-1050a model is French-Canadian with backslash key beside enter rather than above. If you are near a FS or BB you can always ask them to unbox one for you.

Yes, FS price matches, with an extra 10% off the difference. For example, PC-Canada price of $1,332.99

I'm about to buy this laptop within the next few days. I have to wait for tuesday at least, because its a long weekend.

Ive just got a few questions that i want to ask, rather than looking back through all the posts.

    1. Is there a program i can use to over clock the GPU, but only when i want to? im going to school and every last minute of battery life i can squeeze out is precious. but i want to be able to make it perform when i get home and plug it in.

    2. is there a way to mod the input for the keyboard, or get a new button or something to change the location of the french keys? its really a very small problem, but ive used a desktop for the past 7 years and im quite used to the US keyboard layout.

    3. what programs are essential for me to download/use for a laptop? ive never owned one.

    4. whats the best way to get the maximum out of the built in battery?

    5. im thinking about getting the slice battery. does it cause any heating issues?

    6. and lastly but most importantly, where is the best spot to buy one? i'm thinking FS because of the price match. whats the lowest price online?

thanks in advance for all your help!

THere are several answers to some of your questions, so ill just answer a few off the top of my head.

    1. MSI Afterburner, there is also an ATI/AMD overclock tool

    2. THere is a fix, some script, you'll have to search around the forums.

    3. There are many listed on the main page of the Envy 14 lounge. I installed Battery Bar, which gives a very good estimate of battery life.

    4. Use a power scheme in windows such as 'high performance' or 'power saver'. Turn down brightness, turn off bluetooth/wifi when not in use, don't leave disks in the dvd drive. You can edit the power scheme's to your liking. I have the power saving clocking my CPU to 20% to maximize battery life.

    5. From what i've gathered on the forums and videos, HP has worked hard to fix the slice overheating issue. And have added several vents to the battery to allow heats to dissipate better. So no, there is not longer any heating issue.

    6. FS is good for that reason, but ending on September 9th, Best Buy is offering the Envy 14 for $1550 with a free xbox 360 slim if you're interested.

Just received my envy 14 from eBay. Its a great laptop. I had to order the radiance display for 300 dollars because i waited too long. But i also got the intel i5 520m which is not avail. in Canada. Overall, a great quality computer. No flaw with mine.

It also now has a 7200RPM 640GB HD, but you loose the Radiance screen, and Corel PSP X3. Model # 14-1150ca.

The 14-1050ca with Radiance screen is still available for 1499, with i5-420 and 5400RPM drive.

It depends what you want, a better screen, or higher performance.

I live in Rochester, NY and was thinking of driving to Cananda to get one. I'm a bit confused which model I'm looking for. It looks like the 14-1050CA with the i5-460 processor. I've been looking at FS and BB but don't see them listed. Is it worth calling around or are they all out most likely? This would be ideal if I could get my hands on one of these!!! Thanks for your help!

The 1050ca only has the i5-430, but has the Radiance screen. The i5-460 CPU is in the lower res 14-1150ca. Also, the Canadian Envys have the bilingual keyboard with the large L shaped Enter key. Except for that, and extra symbols on the keys, the keyboard layout is pretty well the same.

Future Shop has the 1050ca in stock at Niagara Falls and St Catherines. Bestbuy in St Catherines is out of stock. If you want to buy, the $1299 price at FS is only good thru tomorrow. The regular price of the 1150ca is $1299. There's also 13% sales tax.

Hi everyone, just took a trip down to FS and BB to help confirm some things. Hope this helps.

    To expand on this:
    14-1050CA
    CPU: i5-430M 2.26 Ghz
    Resolution: 1600 x 900
    HDD: Samsung HM641JI - 640GB at 5400 RPM
$1499 MSRP (on display at FS and BB)

14-1150CA (haven't actually seen this model, but these are SUPPOSED to be the specs)
    CPU: i5-460M 2.53 GHz
    Resolution: 1366 x 768
    HDD: 640GB at 7200 RPM
$1299 (price confirmed on BB and FS website)

I was able to compare a 14-1050CA (1600x900) side by side to a 14" laptop with 1366x768, and also to a 14-1155CA (also 1366x768), and I have to say the difference is noticeable. 1600x900 looks much better and has a lot more real estate. 1366x768 is even shorter than the previous standard of 1280x800! And I find this 1280x800 resolution, on my current laptop, is barely passable in terms of the amount of real estate I want on screen.

However, due to the fact you get better specs on the non-Radiance (and it's $200 cheaper), personally, I might be willing to make the sacrafice (though it would be so much better if I could have both Radiance and better specs).

FS and BB list 2 models online (14-1050CA - Radiance, and 14-1150CA - non Radiance, better specs) and it seems many stores have both in stock. More than likely, if my visit to 2 stores is representative, only the 14-1050CA will be on display (it does cost more, and the screen looks better). You will need to SHOW the sales person the item listed on their website if you want to buy them, as they probably won't know the difference.

The FS I visited they also had the 14-1155 CA (Beats Edition). Specs:
    14-1155CA (Beats Edition)
    CPU: i5-460M 2.53 Ghz
    Resolution: 1366 x 768
    HDD: Samsung HM641JJ - 640GB at 7200 RPM
$1499 MSRP (on display at FS)

So unless I'm missing something, it is a 14-1150 in black with the red Beats logo, and $200 more expensive.

I hope this helps some people. What definitely doesn't help is that BB and FS seem to be the largest resellers of the Envy 14, but their sites list incorrect information for the 2 models, and, as most probably know, their sales staff don't know jack about computers.

    Cheers!

Alot of off-topic. For those wanting a quick answer to the original post:

10/22/2010 12:22:31PM Agent (Carol): "Stuart, I am sorry to inform you that we only accept order that is billed and being shipped into a US-based address."
10/22/2010 12:23:00PM Stuart: "but this is crazy. why are customers in canada penalized from this purchase??"
10/22/2010 12:23:41PM Agent (Carol): "I am sorry about this. The system will not allow you to buy from the website if you do not have any US-based billing and shipping address."
10/22/2010 12:24:11PM Agent (Carol): "Your option is either to check with HP Canada or you can let someone you know here in the US to order it for you."
10/22/2010 12:24:39PM Agent (Carol): "The laptop will be delivered to his/her address and it will be him/her who will be responsible for shipping it to you."
10/22/2010 12:25:34PM Agent (Carol): "Once again, I am sorry if this has caused you inconvenience."
10/22/2010 12:26:09PM Stuart: "I must tell you that this is the most ridiculous way of doing business I have ever heard of. The particular HP ENVY 14 is not even available on the Canadaian website! We have 33 MILLION potential customers in Canada that HP are losing out on. I may as"
well take my business to DELL>
10/22/2010 12:26:27PM Stuart: "Can you advise if the laptop can be purchased from the canadaian website and provide me the URL?"
10/22/2010 12:27:10PM Agent (Carol): "I am sorry. I am not aware of product availability on HP Canada. You will need to contact the HP Canada support for accurate information."
10/22/2010 12:27:23PM Agent (Carol): "To learn how and where to buy HP products in other countries, use the "Select" menu located on the upper left-hand corner of HP® - Laptops, Desktop, Printers, Servers, and more. Click on the down arrow and select the country you need."
10/22/2010 12:28:15PM Agent (Carol): "Do you have any other questions, Stuart?"
10/22/2010 12:28:54PM Agent (Carol): "We appreciate your opinion though. Feedback like yours is always appreciated, and it lets us know how well our website and staff have assisted you."
10/22/2010 12:28:58PM Agent (Carol): "Can you acknowledge that you’re still on your computer please?"
10/22/2010 12:30:04PM Stuart: "Thank you. However the fact that HP US and HP Canada are disjointed results in a very poor customer experience. Have a good day."

hahaha... i love that exaggeration - i guess those savvy babies and senile grandpas all potentially want HP's ;)

But in general, I'm kind of disappointed with the situation, I really want a maxed out beats edition, but no dice --- and also the whole no radiance display thing is quite off-putting

In any case, does anyone know if they will be doing a refresh anytime soon?

I bought my Envy 14 Beats customized from ebay for about $1310 including shipping which may or may not have included currency exchange so potentially another $40 on top of that
