wow congrats Greg. I hope you like your new notebook. I am most curious about the screen. normally the 17inch WSXGA+ ones are better then there 15.4inch counter parts.

I'll look at it if/when I get the notebook. I honestly think the package is it, so we'll see.

I'm also going to get some pics of the two so people can compare 15.4" and 17" on the same resolution.

BTW guys, eventually I'm going to list a few small things that will no longer be useful to me on my "Greg's Stuff for Sale" thread. Case, (possibly) my travel battery because I'll probably want to upgrade to the ultra one now :/, things like that. So if you want to profit over my lemon, now's the time :D...

I think in 9 month's time, I can see this same thread happening, only now that the 8710p will be replaced by HP's next business notebook model.

    It has been confirmed.

I now have the 8710p sitting on my desk. Big, but doesn't seem much heavier right now.

    Oh, it is a beast.

Hi, Greg, Congratulations! to your new notebook...

Following this thread.. interesting and may i ask how is the performance of the 8710P and application? given the review says no problem on 3d or graphics apps? i am getting the same model.. but hearing how HP support is and your experience..

    Thanks

I have my 8710p for several weeks now and performance is great.
Vista x64 was a weird experience, but I'm downgrading to XP Pro 32 bit and it works like a charm. Cooling is good, fan is only audible when there's significant load.
I returned a Vostro 1700 with better specs (except the GPU) in favour of 8710p and I'm not regretting. There are things to improve, but most of us can live with it.

Glad to see that everything got sorted properly in the end. I've been having a few issues with my nc8430 since I got it last July. In the beginning, it was mostly driver problems and some lockups (which, weirdly, I managed to fix by raising Windows' simultaneous per-second TCP/IP connection limit -- no idea why that was).

The only persistent problem is that my optical drive. When the drive is new, it works for about a week, and then it just decides, for no obvious reason, to work perfectly some days and not work at all on others. I will be receiving my THIRD replacement optical drive in a day or two. HP has suggested replacing the motherboard, but I have read about others with this same problem who have done so with no positive results (optical drives still fail in the same way). That, in addition to the fact that it works at all (intermittent functionality, to me, doesn't suggest a motherboard failure) and that I can't afford the time nor money to just dick around for two weeks while HP, apparently, dicks around even more.

I'm really beginning to think this particular problem is a manufacturing defect.

    Any ideas on this?
