Are you sure you really want a glossy screen? The reflections can be quite bothersome, and changing the screen will void your warranty, I think.
-
-
Do we have to buy the screen alone, or do we need to buy the an additional cable (2 channel LVDS) that would work with B156HW01 V4?
I am asking this because i don't have much experience in updating screens.
Also as JonasloveshisLenovo asked, does updating screen void warranty? -
V7 is also 95% NTSC gamet, have better contrast.

I just tested the dv7tqe-6000. The results are what I was kind of expecting. Going from a C9 to C11 really ate up a lot of the performance the RAM could of offered. If you have a notebook that has the capability to change the clocks I would love to see what this 8GB kit could really do!

Well I received the ZIF connectors I ordered from sparkfun that were for a DS, they are WAY too small to be used for the power connection for the backlit keyboard. But now that I have the keyboard I can try to measure the pins on the back.
-
How do we know the cable part number used in dv6t FHD and get the price? But the question: is it compatible with dv6t 720 version?
-
Ordered a few different ZIF connectors from digikey in hopes one of them fits.
They've shipped and my laptop still hasnt. Sigh -
Man, I finally found a few retailers that will have the screen i Want. I just ordered the dv6t quad fhd only to find that its 220 nit matte 60% gamut, which for me is bad. Now though I find out that the whole freaking laptop needs to be taken apart to get a new screen in, certainly voiding warranties. is tehre an easier way?
-
You don't have to take everything apart. I disassembled mine to get some part numbers and I only did a partial disassembly. All you have to do is remove the rubber screw hole covers on the screen and follow the instructions in the manual from there. It would probably be easier if you took everything apart, but it is definitely doable.
BTW why do people not like matted screens? I would much prefer one of those over my glossy screen.
@Beradon: Nice work so far and good luck when you get your laptop
Edit:
Here is a link for the cheapest screen I have found: Link -
Its my understanding that the new dv6t-6xxx quad editions do not have those rubber screw covers.
-
Maybe you need to wait until you actually GET your unit BEFORE worrying so much, and be able to formulate intelligent questions.
-
speedking261 do we have to order an additional cable or the one with our laptop is enough?
-
That's the million dollar question. No one knows yet. I posted the information of my mini teardown in this thread. Someone said that they tried a similar thing on a different laptop, but the 720p cable caused "glitches", but as far as I know no one has tried it with this laptop,
I have a DV6-6091 with the 720p screen. The screws to remove the screen was on the bezel of the screen under 2 rubber covers. Here is the guide for my laptop: http://www.mediafire.com/?ty44s4xte5pf5xo. Starting on page 96 it has the disassembly instructions that I used. As far as I know the design isn't different. Look at this post. You can see the rubber covers in the second to last pic. -
Speed king, So u did all this from page 96 while leaving the display attached to the base? if so, it shouldnt be too bad.
-
Also, I'm wondering if the screen will actuallty be able to be replaced this way. You said that you only removed bezel to see par number. Do you think that on page 99, where it says to swing the top edge of the display panel forward, that that will able to be done if the display casing is still attached to the base. if so, whoo hoo!
-
Those of you waiting for info about the backlit keyboard, my laptop shipped today. It says it will be delivered on the 9th.
-
I believe that you can replace it this way, but know that it would probably be easier* if everything was removed.
In response to to if it would void the warranty:
I believe that it does technically void the warranty, but I have disassembled most of the laptop and I have not seen a warranty/seal sticker. If you need to get your laptop serviced I would advise putting the old screen back in and you should be fine. From what I hear, they wont know that anything has been opened. (this is just a thought)
*assuming that you already had everything off
Good to hear, and good luck again. -
Well of the 5 ZIF connectors I ordered, 3 of them fit, so now to receive the laptop.
-
The umber DV6 will look amazing with the back lit keyboard. The lighting on the trackpad is sexy as hell. The downside is that the umber shows off fingerprints more than the silver would.
Anyway, thanks for all the effort Beradon. -
Can you attach the ZIFs in any way that doesn't involve soldering?
P.S. can you post the site that your got the ZIFs from -
Has anyone ordered AUOB156HW01 V7 to try it out?
-
I bought the connectors from digi-key.
The 3 that fit are 1mm pitch right angle ZIF 4 pos connectors. 2 of them are the same orientation (contacts on top, I figured this had to be the case based on the direction of the ribbon cable and the orientation of the header on the motherboard). One is contacts on the bottom (ordered just in case).
Part numbers are as follows:
WM3749CT-ND ($0.96 ea) (4 pos top contact, white/tan, looks just like the ones already on the board, also has slightly longer connections for soldering, likely the best bet)
A33834CT-ND ($0.73 ea) (4 pos top contact, white/black, fits just like the above one, but I think the above will be easier to solder)
WM7954CT-ND ($1.34 ea) (4 pos bottom contact, white/tan, fits like above but I think the contacts are on the wrong side)
Be sure if you decide to order that you select the part number properly, the 3 parts come in 3 different methods (either as a spool of 1000 or more, singly, or as a reel). The one listed with the part number only (usually the second entry when you search on digi-key is correct) -
Looking up LM720AV product number, its description:
HP W/K PHTM DV6T-6100 BASE NB PC
I found these two display cable kits:
640423-001 Display Cable kit IMR
644362-001 Display Cable kit ALU
if the two kit is used for the display, then (just a theory) one used for 720p panel, and the other used on 1080p panel.
then how do we know which one is used for the 1080p screen, in order to use it with our new screen? -
Actually I don't think those coincide with 720p vs 1080p. Here is a quote from my DV6 service manual:
I think the 640423-001 is for the G6 series, but that is just a guess. Those are the only ones that come in the other colors, unless HP plans on releasing the DV6 in these colors too. As a side note, this was from the original manual and therefor before Steel Gray was introduced to the market. -
You are right this has nothing to do with 1080p or 720p, these kits are related to the color used.
When looking up LM720AV product number (dv6), i only found "15.6-inch High Definition Bright View LED display" available.
While looking up LM726AV product number (dv7), i found:
17.3-inch High Definition Bright View LED SVA LVDS
in addition to 17.3 Inch FHD Anti-Glare LED display
two displays and only one display cable for both 640900-001 Display Cable
so that mean the above cable will work on both.
But in the case of dv6 the FHD display is not listed yet as spare part, and consequently the 1080p display cable for it is not added yet.
Can we ask HP directly on how to order 1080p display cable for dv6? -
I would assume they would let us, but do you want to pay $30-$50 for a $10 cable? Do you want to call and see what they say?
@Beradon When is your laptop supposes to arrive? I'm eagerly awaiting a progress report. -
Thursday, I probably wont get to the keyboard until next week cause I work all weekend.
-
Definitely not, can we get a compatible cable from retailers, and is this a standard or HP proprietary cable?
If we got the cable from a separate source, then we don't have to pay for the webcam/microphone module cable which they are included in the kit as the manual saying.
I will try to call HP & ask
UPDATE: i called HP PartSurfer, they said this part 640423-001 is the display cable, but they are not sure whether or not include the 1080p, so they forwarded me to the technical support in India, which of course they didn't know what i am talking about! -
Has anyone actually successfully installed a backlit keyboard to their machine? I was wondering if it would be possible even if it didn't go over to the number pad.
-
Bad News
So for the hell of it before doing a full teardown I simply tried to swap in the backlit ENVY17 keyboard for the dv7tqe keyboard.
2 problems arose:
First: The ENVY17 keyboard is literally about 1mm too wide, it prevent it from dropping into the opening. Forcing it in makes the keyboard arch upward
Second: The wiring for the keyboard is different. When I plugged the ribbon into the motherboard and booted up the machine, most of the keys did nothing, hitting the backspace key turned on capslock as well as hit about 10 other keys at the same time.
I'm going to have to definitively say this is a no-go.
I think our only hope of adding a backlit keyboard is if they release another revision with a backlit keyboard, we might be able to get one of those and put it in this one. -
I appreciate all the work. I was hoping along with you man! Kudos for the initiative. -
@beradon
is there a lip on the side of the key board that can be shaved off to remove a 1/2 mil on each side.
could you download the keyboard drivers for the envy and see if the keys work properly? -
I dont know where to get the keyboard drivers for the ENVY. But no, there is no lip on the edge, the keyboard goes end to end. The tabs on the bottom also do not line up with the holes available where the tabs are for our keyboard
-
@ Beradon
Oh, that's a bummer. But did you get the backlight to work? -
I didnt bother trying to attach the backlight ribbon cable since the keyboard didnt work. I posted a picture earlier showing that the backlight of the keyboard I bought does work, but I didnt try it powering it from the laptop.
-
Will I the BIOS keep me from being able to change my screen? I've got the dv6t-6100 and will be ordering the AUO B156HW01 v7. it has wider color gamut and it is brighter. Will I be able to utilize those? Or will something in the bios or elsehwhere hold me back?
-
If the cables fit, the screen should fit (I think). Don't worry about the BIOS.
-
That is a bummer. I just sent back my DV6 with a backlit keyboard and touchscreen yesterday because it was part of the Sandy Bridge MOBO recall. It really sucks that HP got rid of that (those) features on the DV6. Now....I either keep my Envy 17 I replaced it with, look at a new Envy 14, or go with another brand. Backlit keyboard is a must....
Rep'd for trying..... -
Do we know the part number for the keyboard from the dv6t/7t WITH the backlit keyboard from the sandybridge recall? Is it a chiclet keyboard or a standard?
I wonder if it would fit in the new 6xxx series. -
If the cable fits (which it should), then yes.
-
Just ordered the B156HW01 V7 to install in my brand new dv6t-6100. Will need some moral support getting this installed! I will be following speedking's method, as that seems to be the way to get the screen in without breaking any warranty stickers. Man, I REALLY hope I don't break anything!
Screen should be arriving in a few days. -
Did you make sure you're getting a genuine panel? some resellers will ship a "compatible" screen instead of the one you ordered, if they don't have the particular screen in stock.
-
I did boat loads of research on this, and I managed to find ONE count'em ONE that has the actual AUO panel.
-
Not really a mod, but just fyi. You can use Dell power adapters to charge your HP dv6/7. I always had Dells, so I have like 6 dell adapters. I tried charging the laptop with 60W and 90W dell adapters, both worked fine. Of course, the battery won't charge as quickly, but if you have dell adapters laying around, it can be used on your DV6/7.
-
Do you know if it would cause any throttling or long-run issues for the hp dv6t? Thanks.
-
I don't think it'll cause long term issues as the dell adapters I have are essentially lower power version of the DV6 adapter. I'm not sure about the performance, I haven't noticed degradation, but I certainly run some benchmark to prove it. AFAIK, the sandy bridge architecture is really power efficient, 60w/3.43A should be more than enough to run at full speed with the IGP.
-
Please be SUPER patient when installing the screen, I am really anxious to see the V7 in our system.
The stupid HP support tell now didn't help me how to get an 1080p screen cable, as i have the dv6-6090ee which need its cable replaced for FHD. -
I haven't even gotten the screen yet and I keep thinking about hwo terrified I am about breaking off one of those little snaps that keep the bezel together. So yeah, I am going to be really really patient and careful. Going to be getting in contact with speedking (the one who successfully removed the bezel without taking the whole screen apart, before I do ANYTHING!)
-
is there a big difference between the 6091 and 6100 laptops?
-
Yours is a retail model and the other is a Customized to Order. Very Big difference
Well the only noticeable difference is the dynamic graphics for models with AMD cards.
