Where did you get 50% off that Chrome Buran bag? That's not half bad.

Performance aside, the G74 is huge and heavy. It looks like a gaming machine. Be prepared for a workout if you plan on moving it around. The power brick on it is intimidating too.

Regarding shipping to Europe. I'm in the UK and can vouch for MyUS.com. You can ask them to ship using DHL which I think is a German company. DHL sorted out customs taxes and billed me after delivery in my case.

I can say this...Before I purchased my 2nd Gen Envy...I lived with an Asus G73 for about three days. The G74 is definately a step up...BUT...as stated prior...it is heavy, and looks like a stealth bomber. I liked the G73, but the more time I spent with it, the more I realized that it was NOT a business machine at all. I could not see myself in a business meeting...opening it up and people not thinking that I was going to play a game. The Envy is a beautiful balance between gaming and business. It has the horsepower to do anything the G74 can do...(especially the 17 3D)...plus it has other options and is professional looking. I did some research for some others that asked questions about the new 3rd Gen. The 7690 Video card looks to be a rebadge of the Pavillion series 6770M. It has 128 pixel pipelines and 24 texture units...good amount of power...plus GDDR5 memory. The current Envy has a slightly more powerful video card (6850), but the clocks have been tweaked down, while the 7690 clocks are still high. Basically it is a wash from one generation to the next...but you should be able to play about anything on Med-High. The G74 has the Nvidia 560M...so both are in approximate ballpark...I give the 560M about a 10-15% advantage. With that said...the Envy has a hardware lit keyboard. Asus lights the keyboard via software (I learned that when the drivers became corrupt the second day and I had to call tech support to get the keyboard re-lit through software installation). The sound system in the Asus is Audigy quality via Creative software add on. Envy has BEATS which is both Hardware and software (you get two subs in the new model vs one in the 2nd Gen). Envy now has the Intel dual band 6300N wireless card, where Asus uses Atheros. There are many differences between the Asus and the Envy...I can categorically state that I never regretted returning the Asus for my Envy.

    @RNSO

With that processor, wouldn't it be better to get 1600MHz DDR3? Also, did you get the 17 3D or just the regular 17? What coupon did you use and what was your final price? I ask because it looks like you got the regular 17, and the 33% off coupon works on the 17 3D only.

@theoptimusdime the regular 2d it was 1590 after tax with $500.00 Coupon NBY3757 and i might go with the 1600 MHz ram i heard though, that the diff between 1333 and 1600 in real world in negligible though if it does help out a significant amount i'll go with 8GB of 1600MHz

i just did some research (googleing)
"ddr3 1333 7-7-7-21 is actually more efficient than the ddr3 1600 9-9-9-28. it will give more bandwidth to the cpu so the whole system is more efficient in how it handles your data.

the advantage of slower but 2 lower on cas latency will give the equivalent usage of ram that is about 500mhz faster. so 1333 cl7 will be as efficient as 1800 cl9 ram.
the advantage of 1600mhz cl9 ram is it can often tighten the latency to 8-8-8-24
and give the equivalent performance of 2000mhz cl9 ram

rite now there is some cl7 1333 ram that will quite happily run at 1600mhz oc'd with its cl7 settings and that stuff will out perform 2100+ ram with cl9 settings... so its always worth checking the oc ability of slower ram as it may just surprise you." DDR3 1600 CAS 9 vs. DDR3 1333 CAS 7 - Memory - Motherboards-Memory

Any reason why you didn't go with the 3D setup for a few bucks more plus 2GB extra ram?

well, it sure did, and I hope you are right about assuming that "kleernet enabled system" would mean connecting your existing system (in my case Logitech Z-5450) to their receiver box.

Wich brings me to another question, but how is the receiver box powered?
There is no good footage to be found and product pics dont show it either, but does it require a seperate power connection?
Or does it get its power from connecting to the sound system?

    Thx

I don't think you'll need one for the ENVY 17 - it has two fan ports and a large fan gril all along the back edge.

Then again, we haven't gotten any impressions, so if you want to be safe, it's your choice.

Well the videos shows that you can connect any audio speaker system to it as long as your system supports any of the connection types on the HP Wireless Receiver.

But looking at the Digital SoundTouch™ Control Center, if this is what you have, I don't know if it will work the HP Audio Receiver. For some reason, the Receiver doesn't have Optical out.

If I have the correct image for the Control Center of your Logitech video system, if the Coaxial cable is actually the s/pdif slot, then you can connect your receiver to that. If anyone has more information on that system, let me know if my assumption of that that cable is, is right or wrong.

Worse case scenerio, you can connect via your stereo mini slot with something like this: Headphone RCA Splitter.

But you should wait till the device actually comes out and we can do some accurate assessments for you just to make sure. I may end up just getting it. What's another gadget to my arsenal?

I think most were expecting the 7690 in the 15, now it's confirmed to be the 7650 which according to his benchmarks isn't nearly as good especially with the full hd screen.

Gotcha. That is disappointing then. I ordered the 17 for myself so I'm okay with it and my wife isn't a gamer so the 15 I got her will be fine.

I wonder why they couldn't fit the 7690 in the 15 though.

It might be an idea that the 7690m is the fastest card available in these latest series so they didnt want to put that on the envy 15. if they did people would complain why the envy 17 did not get anyth more powerfull. comparing the benches with the 6770m benchmarks it seems that 6950 outperforms it by 10-15 percent.

I think it had more to do with targeting 7 hours for both the 15 and 17 battery life, the ips on 15 uses quite a bit more power. I think the new Envy lineup is far more balanced than the old ones. As mainly a programmer and designer, I am eager for the more battery life that the new Envy lineup gets at the trade off of the higher end GPU.

I got the 17 3D due to the 33% coupon (would have preferred the normal 17, but this was far cheaper even with the options I added). I am excited to get the 9 cell battery when it becomes available with 8-10 hours of battery life for the 17 3D and more for the regular 17 (the PDF I saw that show all the innards of the new 17in showed extra room for a bigger battery)

You'd think they'd offer a graphics card upgrade to those who ordered the full hd 15 model. Higher res screen would require a better gpu to produce the same framerates and so on.

yup, this is straight from HP (except he was wrong about the gpu)

    1) The panel used in the Envy 15 is IPS
    2) the graphics should be the AMD 7690XT....that's all I've heard for the time being on that.
    3) They come with Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 Wireless (3x3)
    4) The SSDs are from the Intel 320 Series
    5) To clarify, only the 17-incher has a Blu-Ray drive. The 15-incher has DVD

Looking at GPU-Z with my 5830 it seems to display better numbers than the given 7690 numbers. Is this true? Will my performance decrease when going to a 7000 GPU from a 5800 GPU?

Now I am getting a little unsure about getting the Envy 15, hope we get an HP confirmation soon that tells us that it will have a 9 cell batter. If so, then, although I don't want a larger machine, still might get it for more versatile drive bay setup and better graphics card.

While that would suck, I don't think they would take a step backwards on their new line. But then again, this is HP and the way they have handled this release is sketchy...

I think he meant 7650m and not 6950m, just to clarify for others, if so (I am assuming that 10-15% increase of the 7650 over the 6770 is correct), the 7690m was showing about twice the performance in the HP bloggers pre-production tests, so this card might somehow equal or even exceed the 6850 while using half the power (25w vs 50w). If so, that is really impressive indeed for AMD, but a mature process could cause these results with additional tweaking to the GPU. *fingers crossed

The Envy specs and looks are impressive but i had the first gen envy 17 so i am a little bit worried about the heat output especially on the left side of the keyboard (you could toast bread on the top left on the first gen). The 7690 is also still an unknown piece of hardware.

Actually the second generation Envy 17's were fine, thermally. Mine reaches 90C to 92C when I fully load the CPU and GPU at the same time(when I bench using Prime 95 to max CPU and a GPU testing program I have to run GPU full tilt). In all honesty...even when gaming...I never have seen anyone push any machine that hard, primarily synthetic benchmarking...really not real world. Never gets more than warm. New generation actually has TWO exhaust fans (on each side of the keyboard). My bet is that it will do thermals about 10-15C lower...so you really have nothing to worry about. As I stated...it is a fact, check it out here:

    AnandTech - Introducing AMD?s Radeon 7000M and NVIDIA?s GeForce 600M Mobile GPUs

The 7690 is a rebadged 6770M. My son has one in his Pavillion...it handles quite a bit...very nice card. A bit shy in comparison to the 6850 in my Envy....but the clock speed of 725 on the 6770M and 7690 will put it in the 6850's league performancewise. Gonna be a decent card...

One last thing...I run 3DMark11 on my Envy 17 3d and it scores a 1999 with Catalyst 11.12. When I last tested my son's Pavillion, it scored an 1826 in 3DMark11. His resolution is 1600 x 900 and mine is 1920 x 1080. I expect that the 7690XT will score somewhere around 1750-1800. Even an Nvidia 560M only scores what I get with the 6850M....remember...as far as the 6850, HP clocked them DOWN to 545 because the original clocks were supposed to be 700.

I missed it the 1st time, purchased the computer in vain with a $50 off coupon just 2 days ago, and then today it surfaces again. What the hell is happening to me?

that code seems to be a $250 off coupon instead of 33% off. Still good nonetheless.

Can you cancel previous order and buy again using the coupon? alternatively you can buy another one and return the first one once you get it.
