What did the bottom of the laptop feel like? Did it feel like regular hard plastic? Was it soft to the touch like rubber? Was it cold like metal?

I like big laptops, i had the 1st gen Envy 17-1080eo a year and a half ago and my dv7 is also 17". If the Envy hadn't come in 17" i would not have bought an Envy at all. I think the 15" only takes one harddrive.

Believe I saw on one of the video demos that the bottom was magnesium alloy but don't quote me on that.

My order has been updated to "dropped to factory"... How long is the build time running these days ? The ship date provided at the time I placed my order was 1/5/2012, seems like it will likely be done well before that. I used a 33% coupon with free two day shipping so hopefully I'll have it before New Years.

Congrats. You have a nice setup.

    I ordered the envy 15 with a 160g SSD.

The price was a $228.00 differance from the 500 g HD. That was lower than you can get it on the net.

Everyone is different but this setup with the Radiance panel and i7-2670QM CPU makes for a very speedy machine for most real time use.

As time goes by SSD prices will come down so I can get a larger drive then.

Also I can always download to a external drive or to the Cloud.

With the 12 month free financing and another $40.00 off for going this way seems like a no brainer.

So for a $1260.00 with a reliable Intel SSD. This was the sweet spot for me.

I also do not like some of the negative remarks from some people that have not done their research or understand how YOU will be using the envy. YMTCW

As a photographer, I fall in the same boat as you. I have no video recording equipment and my cell phone has been good to me, but it has seen better days, so I would say it is next to worthless at this time. I would take high rez photos on the photography equipment I do have, about 8 pro lenses and DSLR (plus all the other nice pro gear).

I don't think it would hurt to open the box and try it out. If you get the Envy in time to compare them and see if you think it is really worth the extra $300.

To be honest, if it were the last gen Envy compared to the dv6z, I would have picked the dv6z. The new gen Envy's in my opinion are much more balanced of laptops opposed to gaming laptops of the last gens. As a photography, web designer, programmer, and entertainment junkie (I do very lite gaming) I need good enough power/performance (basically a very efficient performance laptop) that still attains great battery life. The dv6z was the only laptop when I started looking around that I felt strongly about (been looking at it for about 4 months now), the new Envy lineup was introduced with a far better balance than the previous ones and fitted my needs almost perfectly.

AFIAK, nobody's has shipped yet - I ordered mine on the 7th (the first day) and it still says ETA for shipment is the 23rd. The current completely unscientific feeling (and one guy's report from talking to an HP rep on the phone) is that they 'expect' to ship the first orders before then but always leave some wiggle room.

The hardest part of this is where to put the limit on cost!

I was fine until YodaGoneMad made his case on the SSD.

That cost me another $228.00 as I was real close to the limit I wanted to go.

I think that is the case with many of us that we all wish we could spend 2K but then reality sets in and make us go over every configuration until one fits the pocketbook.

Thanks to YodaGoneMad and all that contributed on this forum to help all of us come up with the best envy that fits our needs and pocketbook.

I'm pretty much in the same boat haha! I waited and read everyone's comments from page 1, as I always do, until I decided to take the plunge. I configured roughly the same specs as yours as well: 2670, 160GB SSD, 8GB 1333MHz and the IPS of course.

If the old envies are anything to go by, this refresh will be another stunning addition.

Good luck. Check the tracking info for the weight. The warranties ship separately and are likely to be what's shipped.

If you do get one - congrats because you would be among the first to get one.

Odd that HP would have them in the hands of consumers before reviewers, but I guess it could happen.

Soooo I just spoke to HP customer service and they said for the HP envy they where expediting all building process putting new HP Envy and HP Folio at the front of the assembly line before all other builds to try to get them to early adopters before the New Years even if you didn't receive the 2 day shipping (which I did not).

    That makes me :D

    Hi everyone!

I ordered the envy 17 yesterday. I plan to use it at work with 2 external displays @ 1920x1080.

But here is what I just found out in hp's manual, on page 9 :

English is not my native language. Maybe I misunderstand the sentence.
What does that exactly mean ? dp to hdmi is not possible ?

Does it mean you can only make it work with a dp to dp cable, as this picture tend to suggest ?

Maybe with the right adapter it will work fine. I do not have much knowledge as I will be using the wireless with a Push2TV netgear adapter to our 65" plasma.

Wow you ordered the 15th and it has already shipped ? That's amazing. I ordered the on the 16th and it changed to 'dropped to factory' today. The anticipated ship date is the 5th of January but now I'm hopeful I won't have to wait nearly that long.

I hope you're right. I ordered two on 12/7 and don't see any updated info about shipping - still in production. I did the 2-day shipping.

I guess on Monday we'll see if anyone receives. I'm sure we all want bragging rights on this thread.

Hey guys, just remember two things.

    1. stefanp67 ordered a pre-made version of the new Envy (at least it seems that way from the website he linked earlier in the thread. I could be wrong).

    2. He ordered it from HP Sweden or someone who had them in stock, not HP US. So it's possible that they had some in stock compared to the US people.

Also all the ones we ordered are custom... well for the most part. I don't know if the pre-configured ones will ship sooner for those that did order here. But so far it hasn't happened.

Edit: As those above just stated.

Let me clarify a couple of things on nomenclature related to the 15:

The HP ENVY 15 with ATI 4830 is known as the ENVY 15-1000 series (or ENVY 15-10XX, or ENVY 15 Gen 1).

The HP ENVY 15 with ATI 5830 is known as the ENVY 15-1100 and ENVY 15-1200 series (or ENVY 15-11XX / ENVY 15-12XX, or ENVY 15 Gen 1.1 / 1.2) - these are considered minor refreshes. The change to the 5830 was the only thing that was changed in this revision, no other hardware changes have been observed.

The one we're talking about in this thread is the ENVY 15-3000 series (or ENVY 15-3XXX, or ENVY 15 Gen 2) - there is no such thing as an HP ENVY 15-2000 notebook. The 3XXX series is considered a major refresh over the 10XX / 11XX / 12XX series due to significant changes in components and design.

HP does not recognize the use of "Gen 1" or "Gen 2", you will need to tell them should you contact them the complete product number (for example: ENVY 15-1050NR).

It supports 2 Sata drives and 1 MSata drive.

You will have to buy a caddy for the 2nd sata harddrive and specifically a msata if you want that.

Do your research! This has been standard for some time.

Msata SSD has been shown in the configuration for the 17's since it showed up on the HP site.

Very informative post justinkw, thank you. I guess I had the 1100 then since it was definitely before the 1200 update. Still though, it's been an exceedingly solid laptop in all the years I've been using laptops! I think the last time I had something of this quality was Dell's XPS M1330.

I've just received a ship date of 6th January.

I did not feel like cheap plastic for sure, it had soft touch but not rubberish. I would think it was some kind metal.

By the way while the computer body didn't seem like it would capture fingerprints, I wouldn't be so sure about the lid. The lid is very nice and kind of glossy, I was afraid the brown color would ruin the experience a bit but it didn't.

I might give it a shot today, I have a couple of hours to think. The price is really high. In France we usually get some 5% to 10% coupons (compared to the amazing 30% discounts you had recently!) but the prices and configurations are still unknown. They may propose a similar configuration with an i7 2760 instead of the 2670 for the same price, so I'm still wondering... Three weeks is long time!

HP Coupons expired already. :( Will there be another deal? Or what, new coupons?

Yes I tried it and it is expired.

Never say never. That backfired on me a little while ago. ;)
