Has hp release that "thing" that's suppose to mullify the issue of red screen being orange? Do you guys think it will be release soon with the new ivy bridge models coming out?... Will it really help? :/

From what I've read, the issue will continue to be there and is not getting fixed in new models. This is because LG is the only maker of an IPS panel for laptops in this size, and they all have this issue. Other PC Manufacturers that have IPS and the 15" size have the same issue. If you don't want this issue, and want an Envy, you've got to get the Envy 17.

I would like to remove the optical drive to reduce weight. Does anyone know if this will leave a gaping hole in its place? I've never removed a slot loading optical drive before.

Wait, the Screen Issue is still going to be there with the 32xx models?

May have to cancel my order then... I checked out the screen at a Microcenter and it was really noticeable to me..

Coupon code NBG5247 still valid as of this post. Also, for the keyboard flex and color issue, I find them both to be exaggerated. I got my first view of the ENVY screen last week, and it was not noticeable at all. Or maybe I just don't care. The screen is absolutely beautiful. And when they say the screen makes red look orange or red-orange, they really mean "red-red-red-red-red-red-red-orange." It isn't enough to really affect anything. I'm an engineer who does a lot of visual CAD modeling, and this laptop will suit me perfectly.

For the keyboard flex, I find it to be perfect actually. The keyboard gives just enough to make it a comfortable feel. If it was any stiffer I feel like I'd break my fingers. Personal preference of course, but don't let anyone tell you that keyboard flex is necessarily a bad thing. I joined this forum just so that I could make those two points. I'm about to pull the trigger for myself in the next few minutes. I'll be sure to post my thoughts when it comes in.

Also, another point: I'm getting the ENVY with the standard 6GB of ram and the standard 750G 7.2K HDD. I'm upgrading both myself, and I'd suggest anyone else to do the same. I'm going to get an 8GB module on Newegg for about $55 to replace the 2GB module stock on the ENVY, giving 12GB total. For the HDD, you can get a solid SDD on Newegg for $250. Both are very easy to replace.

Hi guys, new member here. I've been lurking for a while and thinking about the Envy 15 as I'm about to go back to business school. I finally pulled the trigger yesterday with the 33% off coupon. I haven't seen it in person yet, but I figure with the 21 day return period I can essentially have a free trial of it. I did order it with the 256GB SSD; since it was only $260 more I figured it was worth it to save the hassle of having to swap out the HDD and reinstall windows.

One thing, though. The landing page for the Envy 3200 ( HP Envy15 | HP Envy) says that it has an optional slot-loading blu ray drive. Does anybody know if the 3000 series page had the same language and it's just a typo, or are they somehow planning to add it as an option soon? While it isn't a deal breaker, I'd certainly pay a little bit more to have a blu ray drive.

Also, is there any word on hard covers for the Envy? I like how you can get a snap-on case for the MBP to protect it, and I'm wondering if anybody makes something similar for the Envy.

    Hi guys,

I've been looking at this particular notebook as a potential college notebook. I've read a bunch of reviews about the 15-3040, and heard some not-so-good things about the battery life. Is it really that bad (as in, would I be able to reliably use it in class?)?

Also, I noticed on the first post that the customization screen with "Customize your Envy 15t-3000 series" is wrong? Is there any way to get the correct one?

Thanks much, I look forward to any replies :)

They've since fixed the customization link, this link should be right (make sure it says 15t-3200 and that the cpu options are 3xxxQM. I've heard the sandy bridge envy 15 gets 4-5 hours under normal use, the ivy bridge models should be more or less the same.

Alright, thanks for the quick response. I did have one other concern, though - I've heard some nasty rumours about HP consistency and quality (and I realize that people that post on forums are the ones with reasons to complain) - any comments?

Hey ive heard that there isnt much performance lost from and dual core i5 and a quad i7 in both gaming and college level engineer. Is that true? and would a i5 not make the computer as hot?

It can be done. Use the service manual as a guide, but the optical drive weighs next to nothing.

I have the clarksdale i7 and I wish i got the i5 because of the heat and battery issues. You're right, there's also not much performance gain in gaming and any engineering gain is negligible for daily use. I'm also a programmer / engineer and unless you're compiling huge programs or doing some heavy calculations -- like super-pi benchmarks etc -- you won't see much difference.

I don't know how much heat and battery you would save between the two though. I imagine some, but I know ivy-bridge is miles ahead of clarksdale as far as efficiency go.

Hi, I'm really sorry for posting so much but I'm about to order I think.

    Just double checking:

This IS the right page, right?

Even though it says 15t-3000 at the top? I got there from the 15t-3200 customization button.

the first gen i7 mobile processors are notorious for burning up, however sandy bridge (prolly ivy also) are better at it, i5 will be cooler but there will be a performance boost to get an i7, with that said, its not gonna be that much of a performance boost considering i5 are enough for most type of gaming, its the gpu that throttles it :p

Yep, you're good. The 3000 doesn't have Ivy Bridge (Intel 3rd gen) processors, nor the 7750m, so that is definitely the Envy 15t-3200.

    Hmmm...
If anybody has to call HP for some reason, you might want to point out to them that the customization page for the 3200 still says it is for the 3000...

Is it just me or is it displaying 7850m for the graphics card now?

Also is it worth it to not upgrade to the i7 so as to save $$, is there much of a difference? This is coming from someone who programs.

after learning about the new dells slated to come out this month (specifically the Inspiron 15 Special Edition and the 15.6" XPS), I am most likely going to cancel the order i placed today for the HP ENVy 15...

the screen was the deal killer. not only will the Dells most likely display superiour colours, but also wont the whack shiny, glossy screens (so no glare)

Dell XPS 15 (L521x) with Intel’s Ivy Bridge Specs and Pictures Emerge

Looking at that article, it looks like an impressive machine in some ways and lacking in others. The matte finish with gorilla glass on top looks to be only slightly better or exactly the same as a glossy finish. I guess we'll see once it comes out. The 0.97 inch thickness is nice.

The down side is the 640M top end GPU. For Dell's sake, I hope it's affordable because Samsung's 15.6" series 7 packs a 650M in the same sized laptop and it has a matte display as well only without a glass cover to add reflection.

Question for those who got their order : DROPPED TO FACTORY/ACCEPTED

Did your order status ever say: "Order being verified" ??

If so, did it say that before or after "Item processing" ?

Just want to know if I made it through the Verification stage

Doubtful anything will happen, but I wrote this to HP:

"I found some discrepancies between the information provided for the HP Envy 15:

At HP Envy15 | HP Envy under "Expansion capabilities" it lists "Slot-loading Blu-ray6 DVD player (optional)" however in the customize page for the Envy 15, there is no option for this feature.

Under "Speed & storage" on the same page, it lists "Optional 3x3 high-performance WLAN4 with Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 + BluetoothProcessor" however only "Intel 2x2 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN + Bluetooth(R)" is listed on the customize page for the Envy 15.

Lastly, while customizing the HP Envy 15, and also listed at HP ENVY 15t-3200 Notebook PC | HP® Official Store under "Processor" there is a lack of description consistency between the processors.

The 3210M lists the turbo boost range, while the others do not. Also, all the processers list the "MB of L3 Cache" except for the 3210M.

I have spoken with others who are considering an HP Envy 15 purchase, but these inconsistencies are delaying their decision."

For some reason, these dells aren't doing it for me (maybe the long wait for the 3200 envy and still no sign of the dells with a supposed release date of April/May is what is doing it).

I'm guessing the 7730M is just an underclocked 7750m?

Good points regarding the glass overlay and the weaker graphics cards. At least the the Inspiron Special Edition doesnt seem to have a glass cover....hopefully lol. I am really doubting that the XPS will be affordable too, since the Inspiron Special Edition alone is already $1200-$1300 (judging from the foreign sites)

After you mentioned the new Samsung 7 (which I had no clue existed up until now), I looked into it and found people saying the display is horrible..

There just ALWAYS has to be something lol

I ended up cancelling my order.

Gonna wait a couple more weeks to see what Apple/Dell come up with and to see if the 32xx's people are getting still have the red/orange screen issue.

Plus I realized there was no need for me to get the 3720qm proc so I was going to cancel anyway. If I do reorder, Ill just get the base i7 quad instead saving $150.

We will still have the screen issue, as those are the only 15" 1080p IPS screens made. The question is whether the software tool HP releases can minimize the problem. I saw some posts about it in another thread, where one person said it fixed it, but I haven't checked yet to see if there was more verification, as I'm a bit skeptical of that claim.

I'm still curious as to how much more heat be produced/how much less battery will be gotten from the i5 offered, vs the i7-3610QM. How limited will the 7750M be by the i5 vs the 3610QM for gaming?

I bought it and ended up returning it because they never addresses the switchable graphics issue, but I can attest that the screen's viewing angles are TERRIBLE.

Does anyone know where I can find instructions for removing the optical drive and replacing it with an SSD? Ultimately, I'd like to keep the drive, but I believe the Envy 15 only has one HDD bay. I figure I can get a USB Blu-ray/Super-Multi drive for a reasonable price down the road and get two birds stoned at once: 1) add SSD and keep 750GB 7200 drive and 2) watch blu-ray movies on this sucker.

    Thanks!

Search for the HP service manual, it comes with instructions on how to removed the ODD. You'll have to buy a caddy to put an HDD in it's place. I've emailed newmodeus asking if their caddy supports the new 3000 series and they were quick to respond in that it is likely identical to the 9.5mm caddy they use in the Envy 14, but can't say for certain until they've seen it.

I plan to do this swap as I've already done it on my previous Envy.

For those of you that already have Envy's, how much bloatware is usually pre-installed on Envy's?
Hopefully its less than the other more mainstream HP PCs.

If it's anything like the DV7T, there should be a minimal restore option in the bios which will reinstall Windows with no bloatware and only the drivers. It takes about 45 minutes to run.

Anyone know if a minimal restore would still allow the analog volume dial on the side of the PC to work? Part of me would rather deal with the bloatware than lose access to that little dial.

Also I'm not a fan of Norton products. would this also be removed with a minimal system restore.
