I'm still debating whether I should sell my HP Envy 14-2090CA for around $600 and buy the new HP envy 15 or wait until Haswell...

1) Before you do anything, create the recovery disks in case something fouls up during your install.
2) Backup the SWSETUP folder from the hard drive to a DVD or USB thumb drive--something really secure so you don't lose it. It has all the drivers and programs for the operation of all the bells and whistles of the laptop. Many of the drivers and programs are HP-specific and are not available anywhere, not even from HP website. If they can be found at all it is very time consuming to try and search them out.
Here is the original page of how to do a clean install for HP laptops in general. You can use an existing Windows DVD or download a copy legitimately if you don't have one. Use the mentioned program to copy the Microsoft key of your OEM system.

The Envys have the option of doing a minimal install which is really easier and cleans up the majority of the bloat without removing the drivers and programs needed for the proper functioning of the laptop. Thankfully the Envys don't come with a lot of bloat to begin with. Should you want to use Norton or Photoshop be sure and copy their keys before you reinstall Windows.
It is quite easy to foul up the proper working of the Envy if you don't keep the proper drivers and programs specific to it. I have followed the Envy forums since I bought my first-gen Envy 14 and there are many threads about people who lost function of their laptops by losing/corrupting the required drivers and programs. My suggestion is to do the miminal install and if you aren't happy then go for the clean install.
Should you just want to use the Envy "as-is" here is another helpful link that has been around the forum for a while. It seems to get lost in the threads but keeps showing up as each new batch of Envys is released.

Also, other programs could be dramatically affected by the difference between a dual core and a quad core. What else will you plan on using the laptop for? Are there any specific programs you will need to run for school/work?
I'm not sure how the hybrid hard drive will impact gaming performance, except to state that hybrids will cache frequently accessed files so the hard drive doesn't have to spin up to retrieve them. This may decrease load times of repeatedly accessed areas, but I can't be until I find a source of someone testing this. -
I'm a software developer and the i7 would be better than i5 in terms of compiling code.. You'll see a big difference in compile time if you're compiling huge amounts of code.
If you're on a budget and can't decide which update to get, I would go with the SSD. The improvement over a 7200 HHD is huge compared to RAM/CPU upgrades. -

my dad tried to order me the envy 3 times, kept denying his card! hopefully sending the money to my US card will do the trick, the coupon will expire soon dammit!!!!!

Does anyone know if you can customize a order in New Zealand?
The resellers have a basic envy listed with 750GD 5400rpm, 1366x768 etc, whereas I want a SSD and 1080p. At the moment I am leaning more towards a XPS or MPB if I can't get those in NZ. -
Fat Dragon Just this guy, you know?
-
i got 2 favors to ask from the ppl whose shipped alreaady, can u guys keep track of how long regular shipping takes, and the people who have 2 daysshpping, canu put ups some initial impressions, benchmarks, reviews, etc?

Anybody else still stuck on the "in production" stage? My estimated ship date is still June 12th.
-
did u get 1333mhz ram or the 3820 (the highest) processor? those seem to be in the config of the people delayed
-
I also have an ENVY 15-32XX Intel Ivy Bridge on order. Mine is due to ship on 6/15. I am curious if those that have received this new configuration with the radiance 1080p panel are still seeing the red/orange color shift that was present with the sandy bridge version of this laptop.
I would be surprised if it is any different since it appears that the same ips panel is being used. Thanks in advance for your comments. -

Custom HP laptops usually take 2-3 days to arrive once they actually leave Shanghai (typically the day you get your tracking number is the end of the day there so it's "received after cutoff" and doesn't get processed by the local Fedex facility until the following morning).
Whether you have 2nd day or regular shipping doesn't seem to impact things a whole lot because the delays (if they occur) usually come from customs in Anchorage. From my experience (having ordered 4 custom HP laptops in the last few years) and reading NBR, this sort of delay isn't too common.
But it's frequently the case that the regular shipping people get theirs just as quickly as the 2nd day, or else it shaves off a day at most. -
-
I'm also still in production and scheduled to ship by June 12. I ordered on Sunday and it went into production on Tuesday I believe. -

So much talk about RAM...
I remember back in December a ton of people saying that they ordered their Envy's with 1333 RAM and it came with 1600. Those of you that ordered early and chose the 1333 may be pleasantly surprised when your laptop arrives. -

btw does anyone know if the previous model had gorilla glass on fhd panel? (the 3xxx one) the tech support person i called yesterday said no more gorilla glass just regular glass
-
-
What model?
When you get it I'm curious if they fixed the power cord issue (when you put the barrel connector in the laptop it basicallly falls out when you move the laptop. Ongoing annoying problem with XPS series & seems to get worse with time) -

Will I see any difference in fps(or gaming performance in general) in skyrim between the i7 3610qm and the i7 3820 qm ?
Also will the amd 7750m be able to play skyrim on high settings at 1920*1080 at a reasonable fps -
1/ No difference
2/ Yep probably.
Regarding the 7750M, I bet it's faster than a GDDR5 640M and at least as fast as the GDDR5 650M. There are reviews of the desktop GT 640 (basically the same chip as the GT 640/650M, just clocked higher) and it takes such a bad beating from the Radeon 7750 (basically a higher clocked 7750M) while consuming more power it's sad, even at low-res where the crappy DDR3 shouldn't matter much.
I wish more manufacturers would use AMD's new chips, Kepler was apparently overhyped while GCN was downplayed.
The whole "roflmaobbq just look at how GTX 680 raped AMD in efficiency and performance" craze is to be blamed for that imo. The sad truth is if you factor in the latest drivers and the fact that many GTX 680 are cherry picked to turbo to the highest possible clock speed, you get a different picture.
Then add the newly released 7970 Ghz (1075mhz instead of 925 stock & lower consumption) and it gets spanked pretty badly. Oh, and the GTX 680 blows at computing. -
My envy 15 got shipped today! It was suppose to ship on June 13. Too bad I went with the free shipping though =/
-
Well it's June 11 and my estimated ship date is still June 12...
-
I got the email this morning that mine shipped...my estimated date was June 14. No tracking available yet though.
-
Now this really is getting ridiculous. I ordered literally an hour and a half after the page went up. What the bloody hell is taking so long?

750G 7200 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive: Estimated delay, Add 4 business days
Source: HP -

You better believe that if it's not shipped by the 12th as it's supposed I'm calling them to upgrade me for free to 2nd day delivery. ;/
-
My estimated ship date was June, 13th. Was notified this morning that it has been received by FedEx in Shanghai and will arrive on the 15th.
My order was the 256GB SSD, 16GB 1600Mhz RAM, i7-3720QM.
Patience is a virtue guys, rest assured your laptops will arrive! For all of you considering the Dell XPS L521X (theres a thread over in the Dell XPS forum here) but have already ordered an Envy I say this to you: Use the Envy for 2-3 weeks and if you hate it then return it. Don't buy the Dell before you see what the early-adopters have to say about it, there could be tons of design flaws or issues with it (I have bought 2 high end Dell's before my Envy and always run into issues, there is no perfect laptop). The design surely looks impressive, but I would like to see what the configuration has, how it compares in price to the Envy, and of course what the screen is. Heat issues could also be an issue to wait and see what others say about. -
