Other than the screen, there's nothing there I care for or thats interesting. Firewire? Dont need it. Lack of Ethernet? No thanks. HDMI? Welcome to 2007.
Pretty sure if I configured on of those exactly the same as the Envy i just got (minus the screen), it's be more than a $1,000 dollar difference at least.
-
the 3 things that make it better: retina, .7in thickness. 4.5 lbs.... but for a $1k premium? not worth it i think and it will prolly over heat like crazy
-
I think the list of things that make it inferior would be longer than 3.
-
list please
ill start off, overheating and price... what else? ports? what else is there to expect since its so skinny? odd? I couldn't care less for it.. ihavent used mine in like 2 years... oh maybe osx
(i am not an apple fanboy but it is a good product...not worth the 1k price hike and potential thermal problems) -
What is the pricing of the MBP and what does the base model come with?
EDIT: NVM. HOLY HELL. What is apple doing charging $2200 for the base bloody laptop?! My Envy has literally the exact specs of the MBP (Minus Retina Display & 650m) and this is only costing me $1500! -
Well with the amount of things you could do to the envy with the 1K+ difference is quite expansive.
-
lol my reaction was about the same...
-
My reaction was the same as well, though followed with 'I wonder long before HP updates their Envy 15 to remove the optical drive and make it similarly thin. I would definitely buy one for $1300ish.'
-
hopefully next gen
-
The new Macbook Pro with Retina Display is $2,000 if you go through their Education Store.
$2,000 is still a ridiculous price to pay for the specs you get. Only 2 things really entice me, the higher resolution display and the 0.71" thickness.
I really wonder how the fan and cooling is going to work because a GT 650M in a 0.71" slim design just seems like it will overheat... -
Though Apple 'claims the thermal management system operates in a way that is nearly imperceptible to the user,' I'm pretty sure it'll get both noisy and hot when running anything intensive, be it rendering videos or running games.
-
So if I configured a new retina MBP to the same specs as the Envy I ordered (2.7Ghz i7; 16GB RAM; 3 Year Warranty) the price comes out to 3600$ -- add on tax and its almost 4000 and the only advantage I receive is 200GB of HD space and the retina display. What I lose is 2200$. Doesn't seem worth it does it? And worse is having to use Mac OS. I'm a windows guy. Stickin' with Envy, no remorse about it.
-
The processors available on the Retina are the 3720 and 3820.
I will give them credit for only charging $200 to go from 8Gb to 16GB RAM. -
There's the problem right there. Some people prefer OSX to Windows - though you're probably not going to find too many of 'em here - and have lots of disposable income.
-
I actually wrote them a letter a while back a couple weeks after the last gen Envy release, and they wrote me back saying, "your suggestion has been taken into consideration."
-
haha completely honest, i think that was an automated reply
-
Im shipped too!
Ordered on the 5th, estimated ship was 15th.
Upgrades: i7-3610qm and radiance display
standard shipping
tracking says it'll be delivered by the 15th!! I really hope it does get here before the weekend so i can have some fun
-
I hate you all!!
-
Imma blow a gasket!
-
I'm frankly quite irritated with this whole situation, but I suppose the blame is somewhat split among the several parties involved, (HP Tech Guys who put up the faulty order page, myself who ordered a component that was not offered, customer service for not letting me change my order, and the factory guys for not just installing a supported component instead) which is making it difficult for me to be pissed off at HP in general...
Either way my order have damn well better be shipped by tomorrow or I'm going to be all over someone's ! -
Full Questions
What are the differences between the 15-3040nr and the 15t-3200? I want the best for my gaming, so what is the difference in the hard drives other than size (I don't fully understand the rpm) and which is most balanced in size & speed? As well as what is the advantage of L3 Caches in the processor as compared to the Turbo boost Overclock up to 3.1 GHz? Does that mean I'd change a setting to get better processing while draining battery?
Quick Questions
1. Notebook 15-3040nr or 15t-3200?
2. Processor Turbo-Boost or L3 Cache?
3. Hard drive Stack on size or size to rpm proportion?
P.S. whomever answers my top questions I will love you long time
<3 xoxo
-
teehee i want the love, get the 32xxx models they the newer ones with better cpu+gpu. Idk about processor. get ssd>hybrid> 7200rpm
>5400rpm -
tell me about it
-
^ So because we didn't upgrade our RAM we are being penalized? It's not my fault their website was wrong and gave me the option to get 1333mhz 6GB. Mine better ship by tomorrow too. I'll be out of town next week and I want this for my trip.
-
Few more questions
(I know, sorry guys I'm just really sketchy before I invest +$1,000 into something)
How much does the RAM really affect overall performance? Especially if I don't have many programs open at one time.
HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection is included in the 750GB 7200 rpm & 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drives, yet doesn't look like it is in the 750 GB 7200 rpm Hybrid Hard Drive? What are the pro's & con's to the Hybrid vs Normal? -
PaKii94 is more than a Notebook Deity, and deserves my love and the love of all others. Bow down to Lord PaKii. *Bows*
-
if u had to choose b/w the two hardrives get the hybrid. I would advise u dont upgrade hdd and buy an aftermarket ssd to put it in much better investment. As for the ram, 6-8 gb shouldbe fine as long as you dont do ram intensive work (large files like photo video editing, etc.)
most comps dont use over 4gb, 8 is futureproof atm and upgrading prices are cheaper and easy to upgrade
-
Indeed. Hopefully all our orders will ship by then.
-
Can you further explain this? I'm trying my best to keep up but I just started researching on computers
-
the regular harddrives are just... regular hardrives
the hp protectsmart or w.e for the most part is just a gimmik (from what i have heard)
the hybrid is like a combo of ssd+ hdd it has like 8 gb (iirc) of ssd and then its a regular hdd, what it does is it caches the most used files onto the ssd portion so they load up faster (windows, games, photoshop, etc.) while the not regularly used files open like a regular harddrive
the ssd is solid state drive which i like to call a really big flashdrive haha. its crazy increase in performance compared to regular harddrive and a good boost from the hybrid. however these are still expensive compared to regular hdd but tehy are droping -
So don't upgrade the HDD and upgrade it to a Solid State Drive once the price on them drops? They look like they have way less memory than the others. Also the 2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz seems like a better processor than the L3 Caches based on speed. Unless does Turbo Boost just means over clocking, if so can the L3 Caches be over clocked as well? And what is the purpose of the L3 Cache and the relationship of size to cache?
-
wait what are u talking about L3 caches; and yeah u got the ssd thing right, they are up to 1 tb now i bileive? but thsoe are expensive as crap. its better if u go 256 or 512 gb
-
3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M Processor (2.5 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.1 GHz)
3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3720QM Processor (2.6 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3820QM Processor (2.7 GHz, 8MB L3 Cache
What's the difference between the first choice and the others? How do they work? -
The first choice is an i5 Dual core. The rest are quad core.
-
oh they all have turbo boost and they all are successively better than the one b4. its up to u to decide how much u are willing to pay for cpu. like i said, the default quadcore should be fine for almost everything u will need from thsi laptop (the 3610) and that money saved should go to ssd
-
I hope u guys will bench that new tech 7750M baby like hell when u'll finally receive your envy laps. Can't wait to see how it performs compared to kepler.
-
oh u bet i will
but hopefully there is driver support and abilty to oc.. i want to get it to desktop 7750 levels atleast
-
Assuming we get the laptop sometime soon... lol
-
There's a few people getting theirs this week. Mine is in Alaska right now so it looks like it'll arrive on time.
-
At what time was your shipping status updated? Mine was last updated in Shanghai at 1:00AM today (my time, so EST), so maybe they just haven't scanned mine in Alaska yet...
Fedex! WHY U NO UPDATE!!
-
A bunch of these must be traveling together so far
Mine's showing as being in Alaska too
Arrived in AK at 12:14pm local time
Cleared customs 2:57pm local time.

My EDD is also June 13 so if you have a later delivery date, it might not be there yet. -
Turbo boost affects the clock speed which is completely unrelated to your L3 cache
L3 cache is just another type of storage. A super super fast kind of storage. Here are some very rough comparisons of storage speeds:
* L3 cache is 10x faster than your RAM memory.
* RAM memory is 100,000x faster than an SSD
* SSD is 2x faster than a regular hard drive
Basically your computer will keep data that is very frequently used in L3 cache so it can access it extremely fast. The larger your L3 cache the more super fast memory space the computer can use.
I would recommend the i7-3610QM upgrade and the 1080p display. From what I've read upgrading the cpu further than the 3610QM will get you diminishing returns and you should spend the money on an SSD instead. -
That is odd... Mine was picked up at the same time as yours, and the shipment information received 5 minutes earlier. Yet mine didn't reach the local Fedex facility until 1:00AM on the 11th (today). Did you happen to get 2 day shipping? (along with any other's whose have reached Alaska by now?)
-
I ordered two day shipping....
-
Yes. I got 2 day shipping. It seems that getting 2 day shipping only shaves off a day for the delivery date.
-
I'm guessing this new HP isn't coming to the UK then?
-
I guess mine will probably arrive in Alaska tomorrow then.
Well, at least we know where the extra day for standard shipping comes from.
Time spent sitting in the Fedex depot in Shanghai
-
So, someone is going to do a full video review of this thing...right?
-
lol i guess ill do it if others dont beat me to it first
ill be the highest OCER
(prolly not
)

edit: cmon chinese people. enough of the special care of my laptop. just ship it already!!!
