I'm wondering that too...their older systems had it (in fact the AMD version still does), but the new i7s don't have that option anymore, which includes the Envy 17.

I'd LOVE if that meant they've moved back to just always including a disc, but I doubt it.

Hey all, thanks for your expertise. I just purchased my dv7QE yesterday afternoon, then saw the cougar point stuff. After some digging around in other forums, I think that the chipsets for dv7-6xxx are okay, but there is still some confusion.
List of Intel chipsets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At the bottom of the page it lists the HM65 chip, which is in the dv7-6xxxx models internationally (haven't found a page for the US versons). The wierd thing is that there are 2 "sSpec" numbers, one for B2 (SLH9C) which has been recalled; and one for B3 (SLJ4N). I have no idea what all these model numbers mean, so some clarification would help.

In addition, there is a driver upgrade for the dv7-6000 CTO Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv7t-6000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
I can't find a good description of what it really does.
"Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver"
"This package contains the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver for supported notebook models and operating systems. This utility enables the operating system to show the correct name for the installed Intel hardware in the Microsoft Windows Device Manager."
    "Supported Devices and Features
Intel CPT Chipset Family LPC Interface Controller - 1C49"

Does this mean that "refurbished" B2 models are in these notebooks? Or are we getting B3 versions? I would like to think the latter. I have spoken to a HP rep, who tried her best to reassure me that the new shipsets are there, but I have no confidence in the answer I was given.

On a side note, if the B2 is there, could I upgrade to a second HDD or SSD in the future, or would I have to worry about the problems with the chipset?

If what people have posted about what model they're using is correct, they aren't okay.

Yes, and if the people posting their specs are correct, these are using the B2, which is what's been recalled. They should be using a B3.

You can probably install updated chipset drivers from Intel too...but either way, this is a physical hardware problem and can't be corrected through software.

Yes, if the people posting about it are using programs that report correctly (and it seems strange they'd be so specific and wrong).

Well first, you'd have to buy the hard drive caddy-thing to use the second bay. But I don't know if the second drive is on an effected port or not. My guess is the two drives would use ports 0 and 1, which are unaffected. But your Blu Ray drive and eSATA are affected, so could stop working because of the flaw.

(If HP's really shipping the uncorrected chip, I wonder if the Envy 17 is using it too...)

General consensus seems to be that a higher 2 core will be similar to a lower end 4 core, except where the software is set up to use multiple cores or where you're running multiple programs.

Unfortunately, there aren't any CPUmark numbers for the i5-xxxxm series at this link, but they have i7-2630qm and i7-2720qm (not a huge difference between those two). Note that the i-7 2620m is a dual core, the quads have a 'Q' in the model name.

Hey, that link I just gave has the top dual core model, 2620m, and the lower quad models on it. The 2620m is rated at 3600, and the next step up, 2630qm is rated 6500. So there's potentially a big difference. I think the best buys are the 2410m and the 2630qm, wouldn't want to pay a lot extra over the 2410m without getting a quad. (but you didn't pay extra because they knocked $200 off your package)

After talking to a HP rep via text, I was told that because the dv7 was just ordered, there was no serial number generated yet. Due to this, she was unable to determine which chipset was installed. I was told that:

"Upon completion, it will be shipped via FedEx depending on the shipping method used on your order, the shipping method chosen at the time of purchase. When the computer is shipped, you will receive an email containing a tracking number and the order information in the order status section of our website will be updated with the same information. It will also be updated with serial number as well."

So I guess we will have to wait until the first computers arrive for customers for them to check.

I was just about the pull the trigger on a new Envy 17 3D (it was just lowered by $50)....when I noticed that it still has the crappy one piece track pad.

HP really needs to get their together. Regardless of what I pay, I either have to give up a back-lit keyboard...or a decent track pad. .....

Ordered mine on Sunday with the $325 off coupon. Upgraded to 8gb of ram and went for the 640gb 7200rpm hard drive over the free 750gb 5400rpm. I bought the last gen DV7 a week before the recall, so it only seemed logical for me to return it and wait for the new model.
I don't think we should be worrying too much about the chipset just yet. The dvt6qe in question with the B2 revision was, according to the post, delivered "11mar2011", which most likely makes it a last gen dv6. I don't know if HP is trying to pull a fast one on old stock or something, but I'm confidant the new model will be fine.

I have the (now) old model of the dv6t qe. I love the touch screen. I am trying to figure out if the pros of the new one will outweigh the touch screen. I find this one gets very hot which is my biggest turn off. Sound is good, I can get used to the smaller keyboard without an issue, and I really don't think that NEED USB 3.0. My question jumps to switchable graphics which I believe we are under the impression are offered on the 6770M and the construction of the new model keeping the laptop cooler.

Does anyone have a 9 cell battery, and if you do, do you find that it helps to keep your laptop better ventilated (cooler)?

Are there any more big advantages to the new one that I'm not seeing. Again I realize I'm a little biased because I enjoy the touch screen, however I would like to be logical and I am well within my 21 day return period. Thanks for any replies! Your help is appreciated!

I'd rather have the new model for the slightly faster CPU and GPU, but other than that I mean both models SHOULD function fine.

I have both the 6 and 9 cell....and I think the 9 cell offers more ventilation.

Also, I loved the touchscreen at first....but now I never use it.....but my GF really likes it.

The backlit keyboard is way more important than the touchscreen IMO.

I'm now torn between an Envy 17 3D, a new DV7, or a different brand. I can't believe the Envy's still use these awful trackpads.

Battery: I have both 6 cell and 9 cell and I find myself using only the 9 cell. It allows for better ventilation because it raises the rear of the computer up about an inch. That slight angle makes it a bit easier to use the keyboard. Another unintended benefit is when lifting the closed computer with one hand, it gives you a better grip and leverage if you handle it from the rear.

Touch screen: I have it on my computer and I used it occasionally at first but once I got used to the "bad" touch pad, I rarely use it. One drawback is that on the super-shiny screen surface, the touch screen leaves visible fingerprints that have to be cleaned frequently. For serious work, it is not significantly advantageous. I believe a touch screen is great on a tablet type computer but often it just gets in the way on a regular laptop. If you return your machine then's it's that extra money that you can use for something else.

USB3: You'll likely see more peripherals coming out with it and it would be nice to be ready to take advantage of it.

Other: I regret the loss of e-SATA and back-lit keyboard in the new model. It's great to gain a better touch pad. Better graphics card is meaningful to those who do a lot of graphic intensive work/play.

After weighing everything, I decided to return the old one for the newer model and come out ahead financially without sacrificing computing power.

Maybe you can answer a couple of questions for us.

For me...#1...why did HP remove the back-lit keyboard?

Also...are old chips (B2) being recycled?

    Thanks!

    1) hp didn't remove backlit keyboard. the dv6 keyboard was switch to the dv7 keyboard in favor of getting rid of the horrible hotkeys on the left and a numpad. dv7 keyboard never had a backlit option before, so it doesn't now either.

    2) under no circumstances would they be recycling those chipsets where it matters - u wont ever face the problem EVEN if they reused the flawed chipset. so either they use the flawed chipset and avoid the affected ports, or using the fixed chipset. so dont worry at all. (most likely using the fixed chipsets btw)

HP gives very inflated estimates. You'll receive it close to the 25th, most likely.

Whatever you do, DO NOT waste money on the quicker shipping. It usually makes no difference since the standard shipping often only takes 3-4 business days. In fact, I've seen cases where HP's attempts to rush the faster shipping have resulted in them screwing up with the clearance papers and causing a delay which can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

I put that configuration (basic with 9 cell battery) in my cart and used coupon code NB6515 for $325 off (which killed the $150 instant rebate) and my price was 954.99 plus tax. Must have a DV7 Quad in your shopping cart to apply that coupon code.

    HP,

    1. Why did you get rid of the back lit option all together? It was awesome and actually practical versus half the other options available.

    2. Why still holding back full HD? Even the XPS15 has one as an option. 1366x768 is okay for gaming, but not a lot of other stuff such as viewing multiple panes or large image editing.

    3. VGA port is ancient. At least Steve Jobs got this right awhile ago.

Well, #3 is not as important as 1 and 2. So at least get 1 and 2 in there if you ever read anything hear. Then you got a buyer.

And any word if the GPU is underclocked or gimped kind of like in the ENVY 14.

Cause HP doesn't care much about their consumer series, they only care for their business series.

Unfortunately for macs , requires an additional display port adapter , which gets easily misplaced.

The VGA port is still very useful because almost all projectors use VGA. Necessary for people who need to do presentations from time to time.. unless there is a HDMI-VGA convertor available..

Question – on the hard drive selection on the dv7 quad there is a option

    660GB 7200RPM Dual Hard Drive (SSD 160GB + 500GB 7200RPM)

Does the Windows OS load on 160GB SSD or no? If I got one of these I would want the Windows 7 to start up on the SSD drive and use the 500GB to store stuff.

Yeah, Windows fits on that fine-your base programs should all fit, and stick media and possibly some installs on the mechanical drive.

He's asking if HP installs it on the SSD. Since the SSD is mentioned first, it's the primary drive.

Apparently the $325 coupon code is working if spec'd with the 3 year extended warranty but not the 4 year.

I am on the phone with HP sales right now.

So HP tells me that the $325 coupon will not work with the 4 year warranty but WILL work with the 3 year.

I ended up ordering under my EPP discount.

HP 4-year Care Pack House Call Service with Accidental Damage Protection for HP Pavilion or Envy Laptop

Estimated build date: March 31, 2011

TOTAL was like $1184 without tax

Sales said that after we receive the laptop we need to call tech support to get the recovery media if we want it... I am assuming because these were just released.

Well, that's better than nothing. I sure like when they include it by default though or at least sell it to you when configuring the system. First thing I do is a clean install :)

Yes your correct! That's what I am asking I know the OS will fit on the SSD drive. I would want the Windows 7 OS to boot from there and the 500GB drive could be used to store stuff only.

    Sorry for any confusion

It comes with some specific program to do that, right? But that doesn't let you do a clean install? Doesn't let you install on a different drive correctly?

Not sure about Windows' own built in capability...whether it would make it easy to install on a new drive or not...

99.9% sure that it's on the SSD. It wouldn't make sense the other way.

The discs from HP won't allow a clean install either.
