What the hell? Silver? I want the dv6tse to be in silver, that would be awesome...not a huge fan of the dark umber color...

Can't wait until other hard drive manufacturer get into the Hybrid HD game.
By the time Seagate fixes the issues with their XT it will be time for the new model hybrids to hit! -
Any one taking advantage of the new 30% off coupon?
NB739862
I have DV7 coming but not sure if its worth saving $80 to wait 2 more weeks -
I don't suppose calling in and asking them for the additional discount will work . . . otherwise they can just pay for you to return it.

Ended up getting around $100 off. $909 w/o tax. Now if I could get it by the end of this week I'll be a ecstatic. -
so there is this new 30% off coupon which gives me a discount of $458 compared to the $325 coupon last week. I have already purchased my pc using the $325 coupon. Any ideas on how I could make the additional saving without having to placing a new order now and sending the other pc back when it arrives?
Thanks -

thanks for the advice and if anyone has luck, please let me know... -
If not ask for supervisor, that should do it.
Good luck -
Hopefully I don't have to call in again about this . . . -

I really like the silver version even though it might just be a fake picture. Does anyone think these silver ones will be rolling out soon? (after we all place our orders). Hp needs to stop teasing...

The 2nd generation (new ones) DV6 and DV7s will look like this:
HP's Pavilion dv6 and dv7 get Envy-like features, g-series loses the bargain basement looks -- Engadget
They will have the "dark umber" finish and were just released March 13th. -
-
Yeah, the picture is definitely of the newer model. I talked to a rep and he said, the the steel gray dv7 in the picture is the newest one. However, he doesn't know if there are any plans for a steel gray dv6 at the moment. Maybe as a future option.
Sooo... yeah... not cool. I'm considering opting for the dv7 now. dark umber fails compare to the gray. -
I called in and had them apply the new 30% coupon (I had previously used the 325 coupon). They will be crediting me back the difference once the PC ships. I had to call twice as the first rep was not helpful at all... but the second one got it done so I agreed to take the survey and she seemed very happy... persistence is the key!

Called HP and talked to a sales rep. I told them that I had ordered a DV7 with the $325 coupon back on the 13th, and since the order hadn't shipped yet I wondered if I could swap the coupon out for the new 30% one. The sales rep said she would see what she could do, and asked if I would like to take the survey. I said yes to the survey. It doesn't hurt to help the rep out if you want them to help you. After going on hold a couple of times, she came back and said they normally don't do this, but they would refund me the difference between the coupons after my order shipped. In the end I saved about $80 and didn't have to alter my order, so the ship date is the same. It literally pays to be a member of this forum

HP Coupons and Coupon Code -
Greetings everyone.
I placed my order for DV7tQE last week Thursday (March 17th) and used coupon code for $325.
Today, I called back and told them that I found a new coupon code which actually saves me more money. The rep just asked what that coupon code was (NB379862) and asked if I would be willing to participate in a survey after the call was over. I agreed, and got a discount of $67 that will be credited to my account, 5 business days after I receive my notebook
FWIW, I called 1-888-999-4747, and was on hold for 12 minutes after speaking to the rep, but it worked.

I am playing around with the discount codes. I am trying to order the dv7 quad computer. I did not include any extra upgrades to the configuration, only the upgrades they are giving for free. So basically the price is $1099, however when I enter the coupon code NB739862 it takes the code but jacks the price up to $1249.99 then takes 30% off bringing the total to $874.00....why? What am I missing?

Ok, thanks... that makes sense!
Another question, can someone explain the difference between the dv7t select and the dv7 quad (in somewhat simple terms)? -

http://www.anandtech.com/show/3734/seagates-momentus-xt-review-finally-a-good-hybrid-hdd
Only reason I didn't upgrade sooner is how annoying it is to reinstall stuff...especially now that we have activation on everything. Anyway back to what I wrote before...:
I'd check Anandtech.com's Momentus XT review if you want specific numbers, because I've never actually benchmarked it, but my experience with it jives with what Anandtech had said.
Like the two most annoying things for me regarding hard drive performance are boot times and initial program loads after booting, and my Momentus XT cuts both very noticeably.
Like I went from a 320GB regular Momentus 7200RPM/16MB drive to an XT 500GB/7200RPM/32MB/4GB drive, and just subjectively standing there I used to be super annoyed waiting for the password prompt to pop up, and now it's fast enough that I can stand waiting for it. And once it's at the Windows desktop, while in every previous system/drive I've used it feels like Windows isn't REALLY ready for another 30-60 seconds or whatever after that, on my XT occasionally one or both of the small programs I have load at launch are already there before the screen even fades in, and like I can pretty much just start launching Firefox and other stuff and it's ready to go...not quite instantly, but pretty close to it.
I'm sure it's not as good as a good SSD, but then it's only like $100ish ($130 when I bought my first one) and it's 500GB, versus like 250GB for $500-600 or whatever.
So...that's all subjective, and I'm sort of scared for people to buy it and go "oh, this isn't that much better", sort of scared I'm overselling it. But there doesn't seem to be any downside, and I've really noticed an improvement from it, so I'd really recommend it for single drive systems.
In your case if you're going from a 5400RPM drive, I'd assume the speed difference would be even more noticeable.
Only bad thing is they have a normal 7200RPM drive, but not an XT version. I think it was Anandtech or someone recently reviewed the 750GB normal seagate 7200RPM drive in comparison to the 500GB XT, and I was surprised by how poorly it did in comparison...it was better than 5400RPM drives, but...
Anyway in Anandtech's thing the XT was by far the fastest mechanical notebook drive you could get, and it even did pretty well against a 10,000RPM Raptor! So I've been recommending it for a while now for single drive bay systems. -

Ok, just spent about an hour on the phone with HP Cust Svc. I placed my order and used the code above, it appeared to take. When I finalized my order I saw that it reverted back to the $1099 price. So I had to call HP to straighten it out. Had to cancel my first order and then the rep helped me place the order again. Anyway, it all worked out in the end... just took some time. Thanks again for the code! -
Hi guys,
I ordered the previous gen dv6 quad core (old chassis - 2nd gen processors) and spoke to the HP customer service rep yesterday who told me that my laptop was already in production.
The rep told me that if I wanted to exchange this one with the newer model I would still be able to use the coupon that I used before (30% off). My questions are:
1. Do you think that I will be able to get them to change this order to the dv7 quad core and still use the coupon (or the one for the dv7 series)?
2. The old model has eSata so I can easily live with it without having USB 3.0. Also I wont be playing many games on it. The machine will almost exclusively be used for photoshop, illustrator and other graphics software. In your opinion should I exchange this for the newer one or stay with the silver colour / backlit keyboard option? -

These have me wanting to wait another month or so until they get all issues resolved. There are however, TONS of positive reviews for this hard drive for its amazing performance, and it is an awesome bang for the buck. -
2. What's more important to you, speed and trackpad quality, or a backlit keyboard?
The slowest current quad (i7-2630qm) is up to 20% faster than the fastest old quad (i7-940xm) in most benchmarks, and within 3% of the 940xm in the benchmarks that the 940xm wins. I don't think HP ever used a non-Sandy Bridge CPU anywhere near as good as a 940xm in a consumer notebook, but now something better than a 940xm is the base CPU in the quads.

I've got an Asus N80vn right now and did update the firmware on the drive to that 24 version a month or so ago. The only thing I noticed prior to that is that sometimes if it wasn't in use the drive would briefly spin down even though I have it set to stay spun up-after the update it stays spun up all the time, so I'm glad of that.
I haven't used it in a Mac though, although I do know of one person who upgraded to a Momentus XT a month ago in a Mac Mini, and seemed to love it so far at least.
I'd take issue with one claim in two of those links...this idea so far as I know has NOT been tried before (it claimed it had been in 2007). Maybe I'm wrong, but I THINK those things (if they ever actually shipped) were mechanical drives + separate flash that was supposed to be used by Windows' readyboost or whatever its called. The things even refer to OS support.
The Momentus XT is totally different from that...it's a second level read cache that's completely managed by the hard drive-the OS doesn't know its there, and so it works with anything. basically normal 5400RPM drives have 8MB caches. Normal 7200RPM drives have 16MB caches. The Momentus XT has a 32MB caches (so has a bit of a benefit right there even) + a 4GB SLC read cache. Rereading the Anandtech review from May, it turns out it puts the emphasis on caching small files, which makes sense and helps explain why a relatively tiny 4GB seems to have such a big boost. (I guess that's how it avoids filling up the cache when I play giant shows recorded off my Tivo! ) -
