GPU is pre-13Mar version... dv7t Picture/Written Spec don't jive. (dv6t looks right however... doesn't it??? ... never mind it looks jumbled also, re: port specs)
    WHO KNOWS!?!?

The easiest way to tell the new gen is if it has USB 3 and by the graphics card models it has.

I posted a question before but probably didnt make myself clear enough: I ordered the older generation (old graphics card - no USB3.0 BUT with the 2nd gen processor). The specs are given below:

    dv6t Quad Ed
    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM (2.0 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.9 GHz
    • 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 6570 GDDR5 graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 7200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software
    • 6-Cell Lithium-Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 6.0 hours of battery life +++
    • 15.6" diagonal High Definition HP BrightView LED Display (1366x768)
    • No TouchScreen (includes HP TrueVision Webcam)
    • Blu-ray writer & SuperMulti DVD burner
    • Intel 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
    • Backlit Keyboard with HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

The laptop is already shipping. My question is should I keep this one or go for the newer model. Are the heating issues really that bad that I should return this?

eSATA is good enough for me in place of USB 3.0 and also I'm ok with the standard webcam. If i need a HD webcam later, can always get an external one. Curious to get your answers

The video card (6770m) alone is worth getting the newer one... You'll lose backlit keyboard though. Also, with the old model you have a chance of getting the faulty b2 chipset. Don't settle for that bull from hp.

Newbie error. I should've mentioned that the laptop will mostly be used for photoshop, illustrator and other graphics software and a bit of ripping blu-rays but not much. I will hardly be doing any gaming at all on this.

Still stick with your original answer?

There are better options for photo editing like the Sager np5160 where you can configure with a 1920x1080 screen. With dv6t, you're stuck with measly 1366x768. If not for the GPU or screen, I'd definitely return if the laptop comes with the faulty chipset.

I have no idea what, if any, demands your usage will place on the GPU. It's possible that you will never switch away from the Intel 3000 GPU that's built into the i7-2630qm.

Will you be using an external display?
How important is portability to you, especially in comparison to the importance of screen area and resolution?
DV7 is 1.5" wider and 1.2" deeper, 20 ounces heavier, and has a 1600x900 screen. I paid $810 for a quad earlier this week. Comes with Blu-ray player, a writer would have been $100 more.

    Current DV6tqe:
    14.88" (W) x 9.65" (D) x 1.21" (min H)/1.37" (max H)
    5.4lb

    DV7tqe:
    16.38" (W) x 10.83" (D) x 1.24" (min H)/1.42" (max H)
    6.7lb

Pretty sure they are still only available in dark umbar... HP is just failing, on the final review and main page for high perf. laptops it's still dark umbar

To anyone thinking about keeping their old laptops as opposed to a free trade in for the new, better ones: DON'T keep the old ones, get new ones!

These should be coming in any day now right (for people that ordered the new ones on day 1)?

Deadline for return/exchange extended! I received an e-mail from HP giving May 15 as the deadline for repair/return/exchange of the SB Couger point issue computers. This seems to be a change from their previous announcement of April 30 being the deadline.

So, I am convinced in keeping my current SB dv6, and I want to exchange it but I'm not impressed w/ the dark umber series. I'm a fan of the backlit keypad and touchscreen options, which the new model lacks and a better resolution would have been convincing but it lacks that as well.
I'm a graphic designer, and I also use it for HD video rendering, animation and ocassional gaming (like NFS or Angry Birds). I work a lot in low light conditions, and the touchscreen is impressive when trying to show off my work. Being said, I want to take advantage of this exchange opportunity, but I don't want to give up the backlit keypad or touchscreen.
At this point, I've decided to wait to see if the Envy refresh comes out before May 15th and offers more convincing options for me to exchange, then I'll take advantage of it.
I know the HD 6770 graphics card could possibly be 50% better, but with the HD 6570, I can render an HD Video and continue to multi-task working in other memory intensive applications without noticing any lag. So, would you still reccommend that I return my laptop or just send it in to get the chipset issue fixed? Why?
    Your advice is appreciated

    I'm also waiting...
We have +6 weeks to see if someone at HP figures out that a $25 back-lit keyboard option on a +$1000 computer makes sense.
Or that buying a +$1600 computer (Envy 17) sucks when the only option is a 5400 rpm HDD....and a trackpad no one likes (and has been replaced on the a lesser model).

I am a web designer and I am in the same boat as you. The touchscreen and backlit keyboard were essential to me. I will see what options become available before the May 15th date. Would it be possible to have HP repair our current ones instead of receiving the new models?

Garbage review. That is a paid review if I have ever seen one. Besides, they are talking about "Blue" color, and the hardware isn't anything like the ones were talking about in this thread. The main chasis design might be similar, but that is where it ends. A core i3? Intel HD? Blue Color? No viewing angle comments? Again, terrible review and not even the same laptop as far as I am concerned.

It's funny how so many people, even that lame review from PCMag mention the lack of a backlit keyboard as a con. Does HP even care what its customers think? It's not like this is some expensive luxury feature that's unrealistic, it's something practical they used to offer and then got rid of...

Yea it must be some kind of European model. I can't configure a DV6 in NA with I3.

The only good thing I got out of the review are the pictures.. and the battery life test (not bad).

Has anyone watched 1080p HD encoded videos/blu rays on a 1600x resolution screen?

If so what does it look like as far as quality, etc.?

I have only viewed HD photos and videos on TRUE HD 1080p screens.

Seemed like a pretty good review even with the lower configuration and processor, I believe the remark about the "blue" cover is probably just and editorial mistake.

Only way that would/could be a mistake is if they copy and pasted from the previous DV6 reviews they had in the past and simply plugged in the new specs. CNET, PCMAG, Etc... Those guys are on the paid list. Even Amazon user reviews are better and more insightful.

I have, on both my notebook's 1280x800 screen and my last monitor's 1650xSomething screen, and it looks great either way.

EDIT: Well, that's with an Nvidia GPU, so for all I know AMD GPUs can't handle scaling as well, but I'd guess it'll look great.

Got a great deal with my dv6qe. Before I get to that, just wanted to say this is my first post and I've found this forum (and others) ridiculously helpful.

Ok, so my configuration (made on the 14th) came out to be $1420 before taxes, shipping, and coupons. Got 2day shipping and used the 325 coupon, for a 1222 total. Once I saw the 30% off coupon, called in and had them price match (-85). Then, got the shipment delayed email yesterday (and 15% coupon) and called them and got the $39 2day shipping comp'd.

Today, I went on online chat and made as-if I was thinking of cancelling due to the delay on top of such a long total wait time (and the fact that I wouldn't have the pc for my "business trip" next week). Made no mention of wanting anything but to "find out how" to cancel my order. They eventually gave me the number to resolutions. But before getting off, I mentioned i would be willing to wait the week if the 15% coupon code I got from the delay could be added to my order. Lo and behold, another $150 off!

That makes for a total of $600 off!

Sorry for the long explanation, but I'm obviously pumped to have such an awesome machine for sub $1000 w/ taxes.

    Damn SingularFiZaK,

Thats a great story. How did you get the rep to do all that?
Like how'd you ask? or did the rep just offer.

Also what options did you get to bring it up to $1420?
    Did you get the SSD?
