Here's a further review of my E14:
After a couple hours spent using the laptop, I'm quite disappointed. I thought I got one with no whine, but after burning the recovery discs, the whine came. It's not like it's holding it's note for you musicians, it's whining, taking a breath, whine some more. Sometimes it'll choose to go staccato.
Then I can't connect to the internet. "No internet access." I tried to connect wirelessly to the schools internet, one secured, one not. I tried to connect using a cable. I tried a new port with a tested cable. I tried the port with the cable I've been using to connect on my old laptop, and still I get no internet access. So this might be a problem with the schools network but eh.
There's a gap between the right edge of the touch pad and the wrist rest.
Here's a photo album documenting flaws on my E14. Most of them are minor and easily overlooked, but with finals looming ahead of me, I expected perfection from what I had hoped to be a little piece of heaven.

I plan on calling to exchange this laptop after I play around with it a bit more. Hopefully the next one will be better.

I just got my Envy 14. Does anyone else find the USB ports on the E14 VERY VERY hard to insert usb plugs into?
-
-
Seems to be great so far. Lot's of software/driver issues, but hey, it's not a Mac like I'm used to, so that's fine. One thing I am concerned about is the battery life. I'll do some further testing.
-
Oh my god, I just noticed that when you look at my Envy's monitor from the side, like extreme angle, there is a little patch that can be seen on the monitor. Like its peeling off...AH, i dont know if I should be freaking out or not. Its like a little patch but directly, there is nothing, it looks totally fine.
-
Just voted great/perfect. I'm very thankful!
-
No issues except slight CPU whine (less than previous Core2Duo computer and work computer)
Trackpad not raised, minimal keyboard flex, screen is fine, no blemishes, solid build, battery seems fine so far, wireless(Intel) working fine with WRT54GS. -
Just a question, im seeding mine in tomorrow because the screen is messed up. Are they gonna fix this laptop for give me a new one?
-
It depends on what you ask for, a replacement or repair.
-
Got mine, awesome condition and running like a champ. Loving everything except the touchpad basically. I just cant seem to get it down yet.
-
I'm very happy with my model. No whine (I work around servers, so my hearing could be shot), great keyboard, performance is wonderful. I really recommend everyone get a SSD and fresh install of windows. The difference is night and day.
-
I'm finding that the more I use mine, the more I like it. At first all I could notice was huge keyboard flex and a slight gap between the lower part of the palm rest and the front piece, sort of extending from below the trackpad over to the right speaker.
If I'm not looking for it I don't notice the keyboard flex. After all, keys are supposed to go down when you press them. The gap really isn't that big either. I'm considering trying to fix the keyboard flex a bit, and if I end up taking things apart I can probably bend the front piece closer to where it's supposed to be.
Other than that everything seems fine, no whine, scratches, or dead pixels that I've noticed. The wifi turns off all the time and I have to reboot (I can't seem to make it come back any other way), but I'm still on the stock install with original drivers, so I'm holding off on opinions there for now.
I haven't had a ton of time with it yet, so I'll use it for a few more days before voting in the pole, but things aren't looking bad, I'd say. -
If your Wi Fi keeps dropping off, you need to update the drivers, a couple ppl had that issue, but was fixed with the update.
-
Yeah I had that wifi issue and since updating my driver it hasnt cut off once.
-
I think mine MIGHT have the whine but I'm not sure. I can hear an extremly high pitched noise which I can just, just hear. but if I put my ear to the keyboard it goes away and all I can hear are the fans (which aren't that loud at all). I'm not sure if it's the computer or something else. I might just be paranoid.
-
Mine so far has no problems with it...I am running a core i5 450M with 4Gb of RAM and Windows Home Premium. One thing I am internested in is what different sounds the cd drives make when they are booting up cuase mine soundds kinda weird but it works..
-
It's normak, it does that to check for any bootable CD's in the drive.
-
mine all perfect except my hp logo light on the back of the lid if off center...
oh well, i put a sticker over it and it looks great!
but just wondering if you guys would rma it or exchange it of it were you?
or send it to repair. -
its supposed to be a premium notebook.
its also weird that the envy haves plastic hinges
while there budget laptop haves aluminium hinges
Notebookcheck: Review HP G62-130EG Notebook -
very small amount of glue by the palm rest, came off with my finger. Otherwise looks great.
Have not had that much time to really do much more yet than turn it on and go through the accept licenses stuff. -
Returning mine today. After owning 25 laptops, the envy 14 has the worst trackpad I've ever used. Looks like I'll be buying another Sony Vaio Z.
-
Can others please check this out & let me know what you see? Look at the very top of your screen panel (directly below the rubber gasket). You need to be looking directly level. Can you see what appears to be the edge of the screen panel & a small gap between there & the gasket?

Ok got my envy a few days ago. So far this is what I think (I haven't reinstalled yet).
Pros:
Great sound thru headphones
Solid build quality
Great size and weight
Back-lit keyboard
Very quiet
Stays extremly cool
Cons:
Fans can be annoying in quiet environment
Touchpad could be better
Bit of a gap on one side of touchpad (none on other)
No inbuilt subwoofer
Plenty of crapware
Ok/Average:
Screen
2 USB ports
Slot load drive is loud when ejecting
Fixable (That I have found):
Fans (to a certain extend)
Touchpad (to a certain extend)
Crapware
Overall sound quality and loudness.
I love it. I don't have a CPU whine or any other problems that people have been getting such as internet cutting out and dead pixels. -
I'm pretty sure there are 3 USB ports, the 3rd is just combined with Esata.
-
-
I have the whine(I'm not going to argue CPU/Component) and can hear it over the fan noise, but how does excessive whine sound.

Can I vote again? I'm on my second one and it's worse than the first!

Just out of curiosity..
How many here got an envy 14 with a messed up backlight logo (the hp symbol on the back of the LCD)..
Out out of that.. How many are just gonna suck it up vs get it repaired/new one? -

Just got mine today and everything is perfect except for a couple of nicks around the edges of the laptop

tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
slight whine but everything else is perfect.
-
I just received my Envy and I'm quite disappointed. I don't see any scratches or marks, but the HP logo is screwed up. The trackpad is also absolute trash. I plan to return this for a refund.

I actually really like the trackpad. I tried the addon someone made, but I love it with just the synaptics driver.
It took me a couple hours to get used to using the trackpad with only one hand instead of 2, and it works really well. Two finger and edge scroll works really well, and I love the size of it.
I have no complaints except for the slight whine caused by bluetooth. -
-
i just covered it with a sticker
im starting school next week and i cant afford not to have my lappy, so i guess im suckin it up.
its just cosmetic anyways -
I got my ENVY 14 today and even I have to admit I'm shocked how well this thing is put together. There isn't single scratch on this thing. The HP Logo is perfect, the trackpad is flush with no gaps, no dead pixels, TRIM support on the Samsung 256GB drive, no gaps around the body, perfect hinges, slice battery fits like a glove, no keyboard flex and no processor whine.
The only thing I could remotely comment on would be the light leakage on the backlit keyboard. I seem to recall the last Macbook I used having very little light leakage compared to my ENVY. I wish the keys extended a little more into the metal casing. That's me just trying to find something to complain about even though it means absolutely nothing.
In short, this thing is perfect. SOme of the small comments on these forums had me a little worried, but HP defintiely has a winner here. -
Got mine yesterday. Couple of very slight scratches on the edges, and the HP emblem on the front has the plastic inside the cover off-center: noticeable, but not a big deal to me. keyboard flex on top half, but only if press hard. No whine, or any other issues. No plans to return.
Very pleased. -

Got the whine...
-
Received my Envy today... everything is perfect besides the lint under the screen. About to request a RMA ::extreme disappointment::
-
I can't re-vote but my 2nd Envy came in PERFECT this time!
-
RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. My laptop came in a day earlier (yay!). However, there's a 2x3inch puncture to the shipping box. Upon opening, there's a smaller gash to the box containing the laptop oh say 1/2 inch long. When I take out the laptop, at first glance, there's no damage. But when I run my finger over the area, you can definitely feel a dent.

My first Envy 14 that I recieved had a terrible cpu whine and I ended up exchanging that one. However, my replacement had problems with heat as well as one of the fans made an extremely loud whining noise, so I ended up having to return that one for a full refund. I absolutely love the Envy 14 but the quality control on these laptops is absolutely killing me. What are the chances that I'll end up with another defective Envy 14?

I can certainly sympathize. My wife and I had to buy five separate Envy 15s in order to find two that were perfect, which we kept. I was tempted to ask my friend in Shanghai to go talk with someone at the factory.

I'm waiting on number three as well. The first had a large greenish tinted circle on the screen and the second had an off-center hinge on the right side that was scraping against the frame and causing the plastic to warp. Love the computer and cant find anything with the size/resolution for my needs, but as others have said I've never seen a notebook that's been put together so poorly.
