My dv6500t with 8400M doesn't have a whine and Counter-Strike runs quite well on it.

Anyone who switches from vista to xp just has trouble adapting to change. Anyway, the loops you have to jump through to make the switch on this system make it difficult and hardly worth the effort. By the end of this year vista will be the gold standard. I have found no problems with vista and in several cases have found it to be a lot better than xp, but change is hard for many people and so there is a lot of push back. Back when everyone was on Windows 2000, people said the same thing, that XP was terrible, nobody would ever go to it, etc.... Now look where we are at

Glickman, do you have the same old dv6000 sticker on the right top corner of the lid, as I do?

    Thanks wgama

trentbg, yes i do. I assume all dv6500t models have it. It's no big deal to me.

There should be an application on the desktop that has a tutorial. You probably don't even need to go through it. Just find the VeriSoft software on your notebook and it's pretty easy to setup.

A lot of the HP software (because it is redundant/superfluous) and all of the stuff I knew I wouldn't need. In many cases, if the program isn't on the system you were using before this, it can probably be nuked. That's the rule of thumb I go by. Just make sure not to delete stuff you need. If it says "TRIAL" on it, it's probably trash..

    Glickman, nice pix and info.

But I don't think it's a problem with us people who want to stay with XP simply not wanting to adapt. A lot of times, for professional reasons, etc., software may be XP-only and not compatible in Vista. In other cases, like mine, hardcore-techie users would like to squeeze every little drop of performance out of their machines. For example, I am using a custom text-only shell (replaces Explorer) that is only 200KB. We do such things in order to get more FPS in Counter-Strike: Source, for example.

There was a topic I started listing all the possible "bloatware" that can be safely removed. However, I recommend doing a clean install using Orev's guide, which is a safe and more effective alternative than simply removing the bloatware.

Congratulations on your new dv6500t! I am seriously looking at one myself, to be honest. It's either that or the dv9500t, or the IFL90/NP2090. Haven't decided yet.

Also, it's nice you included pictures of your new purchase, but the reason they are blurry is that there is not enough light. Also, the reason they are yellow is because you are taking pictures with incandescent bulbs turned on. You might want to try bulbs that are in the 6,500k color range. =)
