Thanks so much for your reply. In the end I gave up and used the new set of disks sent by the HP support staff recovery set number 446545-004 with aplication and driver disk number463734-B21. (they didn't charge me to replace the disks) I think the last set they sent were defective, on top of the other original ones that shipped with the machine, which were definitely a mismatch.
I am now in the reinstall phase, having just reinstalled firefox 3. after the reformat, after the updates and NIS 2009 and its updates. The trouble began/happened last time with a reformat failure due to bad disks and further corruption again with SP1 updates from MS.
But today the basic reformat went well. I used HP update BEFORE the win update, as this was recommended by tech support. Then before going to either secure site (through the updates in the program, not through a browser) I uninstalled the outdated NIS2007 using a previously downloaded, and saved copy of the Norton Removal Tool . Furthermore, I didn't install the new NIS2009 until after windows update did its thing, so Norton couldn't interfere with any of this software. This HP recovery disk set did indeed include Roxio and Qucikplay, the buttons, and everything I was missing regards software with the last set which had the same numbers. Not sure what happened with it and why it screwed up the first time. The tech guy said don't touch anything while the fbi gui manager is still in the task bar; don't expand it to a window, don't turn off the machine manually, or touch anything until it ends (3.5 hrs later after inserting disk 2, driver and aps ) and asks for language and country.( I think the other replacement set of disks may also have been corrupted.) One thing I did right away was to uninstall the Verisoft/ Bioscript since it interfaces poorly with Updated Vista, and then installed a sp (which I downloaded from HP's driver page for my model) with the digital persona software to run the fingerprint reader.
So far so good, I will see how it evolves once windows updates me to sp1, as this could be a problem. This forum was invaluable to me to alert me to the disk problems and is by far the best forum I have stumbled upon in my search for answers. Thanks so much to all of you.

I forgot to mention that in between the faulty install with the product mismatch and errors due to the disks that shipped with the machine from China, and the first failure of the replacement disk reformat, I used a MS 64 bit ultimate disk to completely wipe clean the drive and partition and then used it to do an install using your links for manual drivers before I did this one. Therefore I believe it was the tools on the MS disk to erase the corruption from the failed attempts that cleaned the ground for today's install.

@ khandro: Good to hear that you were able to fix the recovery disc issues with HP! This was really a rampant problem last year, for both dv6500t and dv9500t users who had purchased the recovery kit at the time. With all of these issues, HP should really consider doing more QA testing before distributing their discs.
