I agree with sujinge9, I didn't realize it could get so intense in these threads. LOL
Since the absence of the Radiance display, I never considered the Envy 14.
A $1000+ price range with just a 1366x768 screen was out of the question for me.
Thanks to Staples, I decided to purchase an Envy 14 at a decent price range
for a non-Radiance screen model.
Staples -> $949.98
Staples/HP Recycle promo -> $100.00
Staples/HP coupon -> $50.00
Final price was $799.98 (taxes additional) for an Envy 14-1110NR.
I'm tired after reading this entire thread. Whew!
Definitely helpful and educational.
I was expecting the BrightView screen to be really bad.
Especially, with the posts about "speckling".
The "speckling" posts gave me doubts and nearly prevented me from purchasing
the Envy 14.
I decided to still buy the Envy 14 and just see for myself the debates about the screen.
After using and looking at the screen for a while.
I don't see this "speckling".
The screen quality is adequate for a 1366x768 14.5" screen.
As compared to other similarly sized 1366x768 screens, the BrightView is as good or better.
Yes, it would be great to have a Radiance screen. I sure hope HP will offer something similar to
the Radiance screen at least in the future for current and future owners.
Thank you amdornvidia for the assurance on the BrightView screen.
I agree with you, since the Radiance screen is not an option anymore, to at least try
the BrightView. I'm glad I did try. The BrightView screen is good enough. The pros of the Envy 14
outweighs that con (screen).
The "speckling" posts are forms of fear mongering.
@Aetherlights
Notebookcheck is one of my favorite websites. But they do seem to be overly critical
on 1366x768 screens from any brand/model.
I have a co-worker that purchased an Acer 4820TG.
Notebookcheck negatively criticized the screen on that one as well. But after seeing/using that screen for myself,
the 14" 1366x768 screen was nice, limited viewing angles and such, but it was still adequate.
The majority of us here already know that the Radiance screen is a higher class screen after all.
What's a good analogy? Hmmm, it's like the Radiance is a BMW and the BrightView is a Toyota.
It all depends on affordability and personal usage. Both can get the job done, but it all depends
on personal preference also.
I'd rather compare the BrightView screen with other 1366x768 screens in its size instead
as a fair comparison.
I agree also with amdornvidia about the native resolution of 1366x768 for gaming.
As Notebookcheck has said many times, the ATI 5650 GPU's best performance is at 1366x768.
As many others have mentioned, and I surely agree, there are pros and cons for high resolutions at 14.5" screens or smaller.
It all depends of what the laptop is being used for and personal preference.
For gaming, the limiting factor, and which dictates the best native resolution, is obviously the GPU.

I'm glad you are very happy with your envy 14 and got such a great deal for it!
I agree with you that notebookcheck is overly critical sometimes. The brightview is still a very acceptable display. I installed a few games (SC2, Gears of War, and The Witcher) they all look great. It looks a little disappointing from my perspective since I just got a macbook air 13. The ati 5650 does perform well at 1366x768 and anything higher is pushing it. I wish they had a 1366x768 radiance display for the Envy 14. That would be best of both worlds.
btw I used the 300 coupon and got the Envy i5 580m, 6gb, 5650, 500 HDD and got it for $1000. Im still going to return it not only due to the display but loose trackpad and some random high pitch noise (I think this is the CPU wine). -
But yeah, I agree. If HP releases a refresh in 2 weeks with a better screen, I'd be pissed enough to return it. Actually, I'd probably have to see if
1. my envy has any other "problems" besides the screen, and
2. I would have to configure the new model to see if its worth it. I wouldn't mind not being able to use the 300 bucks off as that would just be the pentalty of no slice and no hdd/ram upgrades, but if there was a 100-200 early adopter penalty in addition to 200 bucks for better screen, idk if I'd be able to do it. -
It's all thanks to Slickdeals.
Thank you for the info on the games. I'll definitely try some of those.
Speaking of Notebookcheck, their Envy 14 Beats Edition review criticized the throttled GPU
at 450 and its effects on gaming. That got me concerned. But reading the Envy gaming thread I'll try to
overlclock with MSI Afterburner and see what happens.
A Radiance 1366x768 would be awesome! That's a great idea!
If HP had done that, HP would've dominated the 1366x768 screens.
You should be working at HP R&D for coming up with such a unique idea. Hehe!
Thanks for the tip on the trackpad and the CPU wine. I'll watch out and observe for those.
Got 2 weeks for a return or exchange, so I'll inspect and test the Envy 14 I got. -
I tried some overclocking with the msi afterburner, works perfect. Got to 550/900. Games crashed when i pushed it to 600/950. I would go with 550/900 max and my temps stayed below 70. The cooling system on this envy is awesome! I actually didn't see much of a difference with it overclocked by the naked eye. SC2 plays smoothly at high either way. I'm gonna try crysis later.
the trackpad drove me crazy at first, but the drivers made it much better. And make sure to download the twofingerscroll in the official envy 14 lounge if you haven't. scrolling works amazing with it on just like a MBP.
And when you are gaming, make sure to click on the battery/charging icon and select "high performance" instead of the hp recommended or power saver. -
has anyone noticed like every company got rid of their high res options in those affordable 14-15 inch laptops?
dell xps- 1080p rgb display gone
sony ea- 1600x900 gone
sony eb- 1080p display gone
envy 14- radiance gone -

who was the Radiance manufacturer? no one knows?
-
I have an HP Envy 14 with the Radiance screen that I am looking to sell. Anyone interested in picking one of these up let me know. i5 450, 4gb (1DIMM), 500GB HDD the rest standard. Flawless condition, no blemishes. MFG warranty through 8/11.

well I had it up on ebay for 1100 but got mixed up in some attempted scam so I haven't called ebay to get it re listed yet. I love it so I probably wouldn't part with it for less than 1000. The screen is definitely the selling point of this laptop though.. I haven't seen any laptop with a better screen.

It's back! At least I think it is. I was customizing an e14 on the HP website today and noticed that the this option was back: "14.5" diagonal HD+ HP Radiance Infinity LED Display (1600x900)"

If I had the money I would jump on it in one second but I just ordered my envy at the microsoft store for around $850 and I really don't have another $400 to get it with the radiance from HP. But man I wish I could!!

That's right!
It's back !!
But only for a limited time.

Hey,
I really want this laptop especially with the display. The only problem is that i live in the UK. How would i go about ordering it to my address? the only option i see is zip code which doesnt help when im in a different country.
Anybody that can help please reply before the radiance disappears again! -
You may want to check if HP has a UK store, I know they have stores for Asian countries, just google "HP UK"
-
-
I'm willing to sell my nice envy 14 if you guys are interested.
Im in the US. -
The radiance screen (1600x900) is only $200 more on the HP site. I think it's worth it for the Envy 14.

Hello, www.hpdirect.com has the Envy 14 for sale right now with the radiance display, limited quantities. Only for shipment to the 50 United States just FYI. Payment accepted is only U.S. Billing address.

Radiance is gone again. Sucks.
-
Has anyone looked up the panel model from the Entech's Monitor Asset Manager ? This screen tailors to Envy 14 users only, so it is hard to find the identical replacement display even on the internet.
Radiance display no longer an option for envy??
