Me, too - backlit keyboard, switchable graphics, etc. I guess we can always hope (and wait)

When was the last E15 refresh? i.e. how long are we potentially waiting for a newly updated model?

Maybe we can have our friendly HP Rep Jason.O to comment on the latest crap up by HP. Nothing personal Jason, but your company whose products I have been using for more than 8 years is really starting to f*%#$@! annoy me.

It played out like he said it would. HP put the option back up to clear out their remaining stock of Radiance Screens, and now they are gone. Whether HP decides to ever return to a Radiance Screen for the Envy 14 sometime in the future is probably a decision well above his pay grade.

    NOOOOOOOO!

I was so close to ordering this. I had everything configured last night and added to my cart, but I checked the CTO again this morning and the radiance was gone. That screen was the reason I was purchasing this laptop, over my second choice (Sager NP5125). I ended up going with that other laptop, but if the envy 15 changes (or the radiance comes back), I will probably cancel my order and go with the envy again since the screen on my second choice is back-ordered until the end of the month.

Isn't it funny how that works?

Yep, thanks to Jason, we were able to get the remaining screens put back on the market for 2 days. At least those of us that really needed to buy the radiance screen were able to do so during that small time period.

Very true. And that was only 3 days. But even if they ran out of stock (which they really shouldn't considering its been only less than 2 months since E14 was made available online), they should have come up with some kind of waiting list option for the radiance screen and process our purchases the moment its available.

Now we we're left with checking our orders on a daily basis and sniffing like a pack of hounds on the moment its available. I would have thought they would have taken this into account from the last time this happened.

Not really. It got taken off a few days ago when the supplies were dwindling. Then got put back up briefly to clear the last remaining stock. Now they are gone, so it is like before but worse because this time it's for real.

it seems that this is a supply issue. can someone plz let me know if HP is trying to get some more of the radiance screen (new contract with actual supplier or new supplier) or they have just dropped it for ever from the Envy 14 specs ??

I'm screwed. I didn't buy it because I'll get my stupid scholarship cheque today :(. Damn I'm feeling like my bad days have started. I picked envy after months of research and it seems like it's all in vain now. I hate 768p resolution. May be will go with N53JN by asus if they offerred it with full HD resolution or may be a Dell xps.

Is the regular display all that bad or is it just bad by comparison with the Radiance?

I'm in my 50's so I hadn't decided yet to go with the Radiance as the higher resolution might have required me to don my reading glasses.

When you click on the laptop on the website the screen is still in the "highlights" (overview tab) of the laptop.

If it wasn't going to be offered again you would think they would change that...

I do think there's still a chance that it may come back. There has been no official statement of it being cancelled.

That said, as others has described like with Dell, it could also be gone forever. I hope it won't be gone, but no matter whatever happens, I hoped this is resolved soon so I can buy my laptop for university.

the regular display is nice. It's not a piece of crap by any means. But when you compare it to the radiance screen.... radiance pretty much takes a crap on the brightviews

Oh man! I'm so glad I jumped on it the moment it came back last time. I feel for the others who have unfortunate circumstances of not getting it. I felt the same way when it first came off the option.

I talked to sales today. After 30 minutes, they said that it was a glitch and that they would soon have an update to fix it and have the Radiance display back as an option.

It's not gone forever, nothing official. Although who knows when it'll come back. I don't understand how this crap can happen. I also wonder what happens to warranty machines when the screen craps out on them or it breaks to be replaced under ADP?

I e-mailed HP about this earlier, and received an automated message with a phone number I could call if I didn't want to wait for an e-mail response. So I gave 'em a call. The first guy transferred me to someone in sales, which I knew was a bad sign from the start.

I asked the sales guy about the monitor, and basically the sales people don't know anything at this point as to whether it's just a shortage, or if it's gone for good. He said to maybe call back on Monday, and that they might know something by then, but they haven't heard anything from corp. at this time.

I won't be getting my student money for another 2-3 weeks, so I can't buy until then anyways, but I really hope they get 'em back in stock! The screen was the main reason I was leaning towards the Envy over some other options.

    Good to know.

You'd think the sales guy I talked to would have been able to look and see that they either still had 'em or didn't, and that it must have been a glitch.

If you don't mind working with a 1366x768p screen (as opposed to Radiance 1600x900p) then you'll be fine, but I'd recommend getting the Dm series or DV series HP laptops as you can actually get slightly better specs, with 1366x768p, for several hundred dollars less then the Envy.

Having said that if you're not in a rush, i'd expect the Radiance (or similar higher resolution screen) to return soon, and with the higher resolution screen you can always change the dpi settings so your fonts and icons are bigger, but at least you have the option to have a higher resolutions screen.

I made the mistake of getting a dell studio xps 1640 with the 1366x768 screen (i had the $200 option to get a 1080p screen) and have regretted for the last 2 years, so I jumped at the chance to get the Envy14 with radiance screen and I must say it's amazing!

To me, it wouldn't make any sense at all to discontinue the Radiance screens at all with so many potential customers such as myself.

This is no different than all the speculation about the missing Brightview option at launch. They had pulled all reference to the lower res screen out of the Envy 14 specs and now it is reversed. Likely a supply issue.

their supplier is no longer supplying them. they are searching for a new supplier that can and will make them within whatever price point it is that they need to retain an acceptable margin on the envy

Meh. By the time that happens the product life cycle will be sun-setting and H-P will be on to the next model/revision.

Apparently screens are a hot commodity. Even smartphone manufacturers like HTC and Motorola are having a difficult time sourcing more screens for their Android phones. I believe the Droid X supply is held up due to this reason.

The only manufacturers in the cat bird seat are Samsung and LG, as they both make their own screens. The rumors have also been swirling for some time that Apple may buy their own screen manufacturer to supply their own stuff.

yeah, hopefully HP has been on top of this for a while, but if they are scrambling now to find another source for some nice screens, I don't wanna think how long that's gonna take to get it into production units.

I've got a friend in the States to buy me an E14 but he'll be there only till end of Sept. So I'm hoping the radiance will be back on again in 2 weeks (will take at least another week or so to be delivered to him) or else I really have to look at something else. If HP is looking for a new supplier, I'm not optimistic that can be done in that time frame.

With all due respect, salespeople (especially front line telephone reps) are the least likely to have accurate information. In all fairness though, this isn't just an HP problem.

A new supplier in two weeks?

    Hell no.

If you really only have a two week time frame, I'd start shopping around and making a list of alternate choices and pricing them out. I'd love the Radiance display too, but I'm starting a new job in a couple of weeks, need a laptop, so I just ordered the 13" MBP. I can't wait around for H-P to straighten out their supply chain issues.

You do realize the that 13" MBP has lower resolution than even the Envy's BrightView screen. Right?
