Yes, I do, but I had to settle for the next best thing.
Like I said, I can't wait around for H-P, so I also had to include other factors: the all metal frame similarities (durability and aesthetics), the compact form factor and the long battery life.
-
I agree with you regarding the construction and overall design of the MacBook - in fact, we have a couple of 13" MBP in our house now. The only reason reason I can't consider a 13" MBP as my primary laptop is specifcally because of the low-res screen. I need more workspace than that.
-
I hear you, but *right now*, the only products a higher res display is available in, aside from the Sony Z series, is the 15"+ screen size; but then you're getting into desktop replacement territory, and portability and battery life takes a hit.
-
Yeah I know,
which leaves me three options:
Lenovo Y460 -
pro - cheaper than E14, switchable graphics
con - ugly, crap screen
Dell Studio 14
pro - almost same specs as E14
con - no switchable graphics
Third option is that I get the E14 from Singapore. They apparently still have the radiance display but similarly configured is about US$ 200 - 300 more than in the states.
Ive ruled out the MBP coz I've never been sold on the OS. While Envy 15 is just a tad too big for my liking and has no switchable graphics. The Alienware M11x was a consideration by the small screen has put me off.
Office, Surfing, photo editing are my main tasks and I play the occasional games SC2, Civ and similar types.
What do you guys think? Its probably between the Studio 14 and the Singapore E14. But Ive been eying the E14 for so long, I'm afraid that anything else I get, I will always regret it. -
Have you considered the Dell XPS16? or maybe the SAGER NP5125?
-
Any bets that the new E14 screens will be of lower quality?
-
Look here for the E14 from Singapore: HP Envy 14-1000 Notebook PC series Home & Home Office
The one which has the i5 520 comes with 2GB ram and 500GB HDD. It will cost approximately 1850 USD. I think you would be better off buying an E14 with a radiance screen off ebay or find one on craigslist. -
Ive actually been avoiding looking at 15.6 inch laptops. The extra bulk is something I'm not that keen to consider. Was always considering a 13 incher but the E14's gorgeousness and radiance screen swayed me to accept the extra bulk.
But will have a look at the SAGER regardless. Not as eye candy as the E14 but quite slim though I understand battery time is a problem. -
@ nasman
I am exactly in the same position as you
let's hope that radiance comes back and we will orde out laptops on time.. -
I'm going from my 15.4" Sager to the Envy 14. It's a sacrifice in GPU power, but overall, the reduced weight and size are well worth it, not to mention a solid overall package. I never cared much for backlight keyboards, but this thing is awesome.
Heck, I don't carry my laptop around much either, but I do whenever I visit family, and need the battery life because they never have any place convenient to plug in while I work. The Alienware M11x spoiled me though. That thing was awesome, but the screen size and resolution, glare, vibrating hard drive, drove me nuts. It was just not what I needed, but the battery life was awesome. -
If the major panel makers are going to go awol when it comes to supplying higher quality panels at competitive prices then I wouldn't blame vendors like apple and others trying to lock in a more direct supply path.
But who is there to buy?
Maybe the panel makers are focusing on a switch to oled manufacturing. But who knows what kind of nightmarish supply issues might exist with that at the start. -
HEAR, HEAR!!
-
alas aaddaam,
...we few, we unhappy few, we band of E14 suckers who cant get a sniff of it...
PS: the E14 on ebay is also brightview. And the Sager is massive. -
if they dont restock before august 30th then its brightview for me... but if they do then hello radiance!
-
You might as well just start ordering the brightview, coz the consensus here so far is that the radiance aint coming back anytime in the next few weeks (if not months).
-
I ordered the Envy 14 with brightview, but I called in to HP and asked them if they could change the order or cancel it and they gave a $75 discount to keep the current config. I'll either send it back later to have it refitted with a radiance screen if it's available or I'll happen upon a used/parts E14 eventually and will swap out the screens myself. It's not too much of an issue since it's going to be my secondary more mobile laptop alongside my older (but still great) P-173X FX.
-
I really hope I can send it back and have it refitted too... so for now I have it ordered with the Brightview... hope it will work out...I really want that radiance. -
Dude. Did you order online? If so, how long did you wait between ordering it online and calling in to HP to change/cancel ?
-
I ordered it on the 17th and i never called HP
my estimate build date is aug 30th
if they get them instock ill ask to change my order only if its before my build date... -
I ordered online and didn't see the Radiance option. I called back in two days even though I saw the status was in production and they told me there was nothing they could do. I pressed them and they said they might be able to cancel if I really wanted to, they offered $50 for me to keep the order but I still said I wanted to cancel then they raised to the discount to $75 and I accepted.
-
I will do this. Wish me luck.
-
I haven't read all 28 pgs to see if this has already been mentioned but if Radiance was a base configuration, then a $200(-$100 base price)=$100 option, and now no more Radiance, then it should be safe to posit that Radiance would come back as either a base config or a (wishfully) cheaper option.
Maybe HP just didn't make correct estimations on it's desirability but once the ball is rolling, I don't see why they couldn't lower the price on it. -
That being said. Let's hope we're talking a matter of weeks here.
-
Today, I was about to buy this 20 minutes ago ._. Untill i saw no Radience screen .
wow seriously ..... im considering a mac after this -
if u guys are really missing the radiance screen that much, why not order from canada.
i mean, i know the price is really inflated vs. the US. but if its something u absoloutely want and need, then that option is there. -
lol all the envy 14 with radiance screens on ebay are gone. So glad I got mine before it ran out and before the price hike!
-
omg... i just got my money together purchase the laptop tonight, and i find this post. What a let down HP... if i can't get the radiance display, im not getting the HP envy 14.
-
^ Hahaha ... Amen to this.
I have an HDX16T ... got it last august.
Started having wifi problems about a month ago, was forced to send it in to HP for repair, I purchased a Mini as a temporary comp... What a POS
I've been following the E14 since release day, was hoping to get BCB but missed it 2wice and it never came back...I was just planning to go w/ Student Discount to order it, but that's when I noticed the Radiance Screen = gone (which is the only reason I began looking into the E14, esp. w/ the size and all).
This is BULL , I don't want to go to the E15 with the fukd up keyboard!
and btw Potential SONY BUYERS, Sony is running a promo @ RETAIL LOCATIONS (Sony Style) = FREE PS3 w/ Purchase of a laptop + Extended Warranty. -
radiance screen is back but for more money!!
edit: nvm they took it off. -
I see it listed for +300
Well, better that than nothing at all. -
i don't see it anymore
-
try another browser or clean out the one you have
-
The Envy 15 keyboard isn't bad, really. I got used to it very quickly.
And that Sony deal seems really nice as long as the extended warranty isn't a rip off. -
:O RADIANCE DISPLAY!!!
ugh I could change my order!!!
ill call HP later today
NO ONE BUY THE LAST RADIANCE! ITS MINE
!
-
Youch! $300 more! I'm just glad they have more in stock instead of going out completely. So if mine goes dead, it'll be replaceable.
-
Hmm, interesting. Maybe HP was having a dispute with the supplier over price.
These high end displays must be very expensive to manufacture... on Elitebooks the Dreamcolor displays cost ~$400 to $500+ extra. -
You would have thought that they would have had all that settled by the time the laptop started manufacture. And to just remove it instead of leaving it there stating it would delay your order by two, three, weeks or whatever.
-
Jeeze, first its +100, then +200, and now +300. I guess that's what I get for procrastinating.
-
I'm glad I got it when I could! This is the first time I haven't been screwed with the ENVY 14. Two BCBs and +$200 for the radiance display...
At least now I know I can send mine in for repairs if something goes wrong.
I wonder if they are made by the same manufacturer... -
Ditto on that...
I lost out on the Bing Cashback and now I have to pay $300 for the radiance! -
Wall of Voodoo Notebook Consultant
I noticed this now while configuring an Envy 14:
8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 3.75 hours of battery life +++
Also the screen option is now $300, up from the $200 they adjusted after "dropping" the price. -
I see that too. If it only gets 3.75 in HPs ideal conditions then I'm not getting this.
-
isn't 4 hours about what people were getting anyway in real life?
-
Wall of Voodoo Notebook Consultant
It's more reasonable than their initial claim. That's the point.
-
Hey guys, FWIW, if you had an E14 in your cart before the most recent price increase, it will let you still check out and order. I submitted an order, with my company 10% discount code, with upgrade CPU to the 450, and the Radiance screen for $1124 plus tax.
-
Ok, looks like I'm gonna take the plunge and buy it. Gonna ask a friend of mine to ship it from the states.
Does anybody know what the dimensions and weight of the E14 box is? Will need it to calculate shipping cost.
Can't seem to find the box dimensions. Saw pictures of it but I can only make out a rough guess.
Any info on actual dimensions and weight of the box with the E14 would be much appreciated. Thanks -
wow i thought $200 was steep enough as it is, currently the AUS version of the envy isn't looking so exp about 2100 USD with the screen quad core etc etc 4gb ram 500gb HDD including GST (Tax)
-
There is also Fatwallet cash back of of 3% at fatwallet.com...
-
I think part of the problem with the pricing issue is the lack of competition. The Envy 14 is the only laptop in the PC world that is making a run at the MacBook Pro in terms of quality. The Macbook Pro cost $1800 in the USA. The Envy 14, even with the $300 upcharge, still only costs $1450 with MBP 15-like configs. So it's still a pretty sweet savings and an absolutely amazing deal for those who want an MBP 15 like computer but don't want OSX. Until another PC maker enters the high quality build market, HP can really us all the way up to that $1800 ceiling that Apple has set.
-
All these cash backs! argh first you Americans get cheaper fuel, then cars then electronics sheesh, and lower TAX arrrr, though we do have good health care =P.
Fair call bogan, uhm i guess i'm going to have to go with a 15... it's so much cheaper and actually is only slightly bigger and apparently is lighter.
Radiance display no longer an option for envy??
