The sp1 update does not show up on windows update on my dv6500t. I installed it anyways manually with bad results. Freeze ups and my kaspersky would lock up system when it tried to update itself. Don't know if there are issues with kaspersky 6.0 and sp1 but the system acted badly. Uninstalled SP1 and the device manager still had a conflict so I finally used the restore point before doing the SP1 update and it did bring it back. Either the Conexant drivers messed it up or kaspersky I am thinking.

I have installed manually sp1 in my karparskey installed system.Every thing is working fine.By the way i am using an dv6700 special edition note book.

For those of you asking, I got the 4.36 Conexant audio drivers through windows update, on March 13. I just hid them at first because I didn't think I needed them, but the I saw the problematic driver list posted by MS.
If you go back and read my previous posts, I installed them, but sp1 still did not show up in windows update.
I ended up just downloading the stand alone installer and installing sp1 that way. It installed perfectly fine (took about 30-45min) and so far I am not having any issues with it (keep in mind I have the updated audio drivers). -
Windows Vista SP1 Deployment Guide describes that vsp1cln.exe File Removal Tool as following:
Windows Vista SP1 File Removal Tool Vsp1cln.exe is an optional tool that you can run after you install SP1. This tool removes older versions of components that have been updated in SP1, which are stored during the installation in case you need to uninstall SP1 later. Saving these older components increases the amount of disk space used.. Typically, you should run Vsp1cln.exe if you want to reclaim this disk space after applying SP1 and if you will not need to uninstall SP1. You can use this tool both online and offline, but you must have SP1 installed. You cannot uninstall SP1 after you run this tool on an image.
To run Windows Vista SP1 File Removal Tool, open a command prompt (Cmd) or simply press Winkey + R keyboard shortcut. Then enter the following command:
Vsp1cln.exe
Once cleaning process completed, several hundreds megabytes of disk space will be freed, with reports saying around 800 MB, depending on edition of Vista installed. For advanced users, there are plenty of switches and options available to Vsp1cln.exe:
VSP1CLN.exe [/h] | [/o: offline Windows files folder path] [/quiet]
/? or /h: display Vsp1cln commands list.
/o:[offline windows files folder path]: location of Windows Vista offline image that wants to remove RTM files
/quiet: silent execution, no display.
/verbose: display extra details.
There is no download needed, as Vsp1cln.exe comes included with SP1. Note that once ran, SP1 cannot be uninstalled. For those who really run out of disk space, Vista Junk Cleaner script can also be used to delete unwanted files and reclaim more space. -

OK as I posted earlier, i was hesatant to update because of the Conexant HD driver issue that others with HP laptops are having. (SP1 doesnt show up in Windows Update because of the driver) I just finished installing SP1 (Via the links provided by other members in this thread) on my dv9715nr and everything seems to be working just fine. Even the sound.

Thanks Kingb33!!
That little tool got me about .9 gig back. +1 rep.

Here's my experience on a dv6000z:
I'm using Vista x64, I've been checking Windows Update for the better part of two days now, and no SP1 has appeared. The laptop has Conexant High Definition sound, and I updated to the latest drivers via Windows Update. The Device Manager says I have version 4.33.1.60, but I check both "chdart.sys" and "chdart64.sys" and it says version 4.15.0.0.
Microsoft says 4.32.0.0 needs to be installed, so if the Device Manager tells me 4.33.1.60, shouldn't chdart.sys have gotten updated, too?
Anyone else seeing this? -
For example, video encoding. If I use Nero to encode a video to DVD, my MacBook running XP (2.16GHz, 1GB of RAM) can literally do it twice as fast as the HP (2GHz C2D Santa Rosa, 2GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium). However, if I put XP on the HP, it can encode video just as fast as my Mac. This is using the "High Performance" power profile too.
Games run faster under XP. Certain games literally have twice the performance under XP, like UT2k4 and Half-Life 2.
I've gotten so tired of Vista being slow in actual application and game performance that I went ahead and reinstalled XP on it. Updates are downloading on it as I type this on my Mac. -
Vista SP1 is not showing up for my dv2000t. Hopefully, HP will get us some updated drivers so we can get the updates needed. Maybe this is another way for Microsoft to help companies sell computers in a dying economy.
Also on the website posted earilier it wants the 4.32 or earlier.
Conexant HD Audio • For x86-based computers: Chdart.sys - version 4.32.0.0 or earlier
• For x64-based computers: Chdart64.sys - version 4.32.0.0 or earlier -
. I got the driver from windows update and i still could not see SP1. I then just read beanboy89's post and I decided to see what was going on in my C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers folder. I noticed that there were 2 Conexant files (CHDART.sys and CHDRT32.sys). CHDART.sys seems to be the same file mentioned in the causes for SP1 not showing up, but CHDRT32.sys is not mentioned anywhere. So, I looked at the versions of both files and i found something interesting. CHDART.sys had a version 4.15.0.0 (same version from HP website) and CHDRT32.sys had a version of 4.33.1.0 (version form windows update). So i backed up these 2 files and deleted CHDART.sys from the drivers folder. I then renamed CHDRT32.sys to CHDART.sys and copied the backed up CHDRT32.sys here. After that, I went to windows update and saw SP1 on my 2nd try
. It seems to me that the problem is actually with the way windows update checks the driver files for SP1. By the way, my notebook is an HP Pavilion dv9230us. Also when I installed the conexant driver from windows update, I received an error code of 800705B4 which was unknown to me. I then clicked Try Again and it gave me another error that said that this driver was already installed. I checked device manager and it showed the new driver version under Conexant High Definition Audio and i checked for updates in windows update and I didn't receive this driver again in my choices so I'm guessing it installed completely.
I also noticed that in device manager CHDART.sys isn't used in Conexant High Definition Audio, but CHDRT32.sys is. I think the problem is that Windows Update checks CHDART.sys instead of CHDRT32.sys which is what the real driver is. -
cursedZeroX: will this method work for 64bit aswell? where exactly did you get it from windows update
I currently have Conexant HD 4.26.0.0 installed. Where do i find 4.33.1.0 -
I got the driver from windows update that was released in March 2008. The driver version shows up as 4.33.1.60 in device manager but the CHDRT32.sys file shows up as 4.33.1.0. Maybe you have a different sound card model than me? I can't check if this works in vista 64 bit since i don't have vista 64 bit, but you can try it with the CHDRT64.sys file instead i guess.
-
Hmmm, only have CHDART (4.26) in my drivers folder, and there's no sign of any updated drivers on windows update.
You sure CHDART32 came from windows update? -
same as above, only 4.26 shows up.. i have a conexant HD audio

For all of you who can't see Vista SP1 from Windows Update, just go here and download the Service Pack and install it on your own. For those of you who don't know, you can go and download every single update for Microsoft products by going to their downloads section in their website.
This is the 32-bit version:

This is the 64-bit version:

I have Compaq 8710p and in windows update shows SP1 but i can't install it.I also downloaded the standalone SP1 installer but it forwards me to a microsoft page that says about the drivers incombatibilities. When are HP going to release new drivers? Are they going to??
-
mine are listed in my sig. and that's what im judging my comment by..
i installed xp 32/64 and vista 32/64. tested them all. my 3dmark06 version 110 score stayed around 3030-3060. been hard testing call of duty 4, which i can play at a decent setting at 1900 and 1600 res. haven't tried any others yet.
and my hp is faster than my macbook at rendering/encoding/loading/.... probably because my macbook only has a 64mb dedicated video card while the hp has a 512mb dedicated video card.
but just like when xp came out, every one bad mouth it as well for the first 2 years, then everyone jumped on board after the million and 1 updates/patches/fixes. it will be the same with vista... just my opinion though and not a statement of fact.... -
The Hermose driver didn't work for me (x32) either. Said it couldn't find the media device. Does anyone with x32 and Conexant have an appropriate driver? -
not sure if this will help..... Conexant HD

Updated my machines with SP1 - very pleased! Everything opens faster, less power consumption.

Its too early to tell if this update will improve performance. Faster boots, copying, and battery life is what I am hoping for.
-
So what are the big fixes that SP1 is implementing?
-
Well thanks everyone for your suggestions but none of them applied to my situation. This slow problem happens before Windows comes up. It is the loading of the Windows system files at boot that goes slow. After windows is up and I'm logged on Vista is perfect. Any other thoughts?

Drive health is one of the first things I made sure of before posting. I really believe the problem is with BIOS because if I uninstall SP1 the problem goes away. That may sound funny and you might think that SP1 is the problem but other models of HP laptops needed a BIOS update before installing SP1. Thanks for the input.

Don't go running for SP1. Remember the History and you will not make the same mistake over. -
yes, but us nosy, think we can make it work, ready to try something brand new, ready to try and break it, be first to post and complain about what didn't work and what did work, so we can see that shinny new SP1 in the system profile! yep, that would be me....lol -
Update: system started to freeze up again when Kaspersky tried to update. Was able to restart laptop no problem but I decided to once again, use system restore to remove SP1. For me, the update did nothing. Transfers were slower, superfetch HD thrashing 2X longer, everything was worse. I would have given it more time but I cannot tolerate IE and system freezes. Even my wife was asking what did I do to the system now.. she was not happy so that told me right away that SP1 was bad news.
I can only think about when MS was saying that Vista was optimized when it initially shipped and that there would be no major SP with Vista. Well, I am starting to believe they were right. In my case anyway, major SP upgrades are not working. All the rest of the updates worked fine but not sp1. At least some people do report some gain but It sounds like the general consensus is that for most, its hard to perceive much perceivable gain on SP1.. except for transfer speeds for some people. Like most, I was hoping for a miracle where Vistas bloat would magically disappear and we would have XP again. Now its looking like I may have to go through the effort of loading XP on this dv6500 if I ever want something that just works. Now I have had to turn off automatic updates off in vista because I cannot trust SP1 and must be very careful of what I update now. Probably just do the minimum security updates. Vista is let down. -
My 4GB RAM is now recognised in SP1 32-bit Vista Ultimate's Welcome Center
BUT Task Manager still says 3069MB Physical RAM.
-
Recognised but not utilized. Its impossible for a 32bit OS to use all 4gb
Its actually buggy. A user here had 1gb stick of RAM and it SP1 showed it as 8gb -
If you go through the Vista SP1 release notes, you'll note that the change to the Computer-Properties screen to show physical ram qty (i.e. showing 4GB instead of 3GB before) is -Purely- a cosmetic change.
So don't assume that it's helping you in any way...It was most likely implemented to reduce the # of phone calls Microsoft received @ level 1 support "My system has 4GB of ram, not all of it shows up!!! What's broke?". -
I have an HP dv6000 and tried the fix suggested ie changing the file names. This did not work so I then downloaded the full sp1 file and tried to install it. I got all the way through to the two reboots and received a message at the end that the installation failed. So I guess we will have to wait until HP gets its act together or MS figures out the problem.

Things should get really interesting when MS decides to push SP1 automatically on WU. -
Actually MS is already pushing sp1 through updates. My other HP is already updated and it went fine. I have updated all the drivers. My problem seems to be the problem with the conexent driver so I will wait and see what happens. By the way you can really speed up your boot time by disabling the security check function in Vista.
JC -
SP1 has not shown up in WU yet. I installed from downloaded update. I guess I will see if it shows up. If it does, I may give it another shot. As for the tweaks for shutdown and bootup times I have already done that. Everything runs decent enough pre SP1. SP1 performance was very poor on this rig. -
Does anyone have the latest connextant driver? I am trying to download it from xfiles but it is so slow. I would appreciate it if someone has it they could email it to me.
Thanks

Conclusion: I don't think their driver works, for anyone. -
I updated my little HP just when Vista SP1 build 18000 was available, about 3 weeks ago. Ran without a hitch (unlike the HTPC inside), I used the reg hack- which worked in making the update appear...but I decided to d/l the standalone pack from Technet.
Overall it works ok. My screen inverter died a week later, so I've only just recieved my laptop back from the repairer just before easter break. With appalling scratches after fitting a new display and not clipping the speaker cover in correctly.
Soon a new 320GB SATA300 drive will turn up from 'ebay'. And I might experiment with installing a spare copy of Vista64 with the HP key.....
Reading that macroops fusion is disabled in 64bit mode on Core2's is interesting, and I've been unable to confirm whether penryn has fixed this.
Anyway, just a chat.

Try this if you are having Conexant issues with Vista SP1.

Hi guys, just caught wind of this thread.
I upgraded to SP1 hours upon its public release - yes I was that eager. Anyways, I've always made a habit of keeping things up to date - applying all MS, Windows and HP updates and patches, plus all peripheral drivers as they're released. I'm finding however that after SP1, I no longer have lightscribe functionality. I use the default Roxio Express Labeller program that was pre-installed by HP. When I get upto the "print" stage, it chucks a hissy and displays a memory address error.
I was wondering if anyone else has come across this problem, or whether they could recommend any steps I could take to resolve it. Many thanks in advance.
Specific model no. of my unit is DV6426US - however I think all DV2000, DV6000 and DV9000 series share the same optical drives with the same drivers, etc. so it shouldn't make a difference. -
SP1 was a pain to install... and it took longer than the actual vista install...
after three tries on my notebook, i just did a clean install and installed sp1 -
Anyway, I can't install the drivers for the external sound card. I assumed it's not compatable with vista but do you think it's a driver issue? I updated all of my audio drivers not to sure what you guys are talking about referring to Hermosa drivers. I was hoping that sp1 would correct this issue but I haven't installed it yet.
I'm running on a M9000T desktop-quad 6600 - 3 gigs of ram and 320 hd. -
I Finally got SP1 running good. Had to upgrade my kaspersky to version 7. Its all good now.
Seems to be running a bit faster. Boot times have not improved but my network transfer speeds are better.. especially when I move smaller file sizes... something that the original vista bombed at.
-
Just want to thank cursedZeroX. Wasn't seeing SP1 in Windows Update, so I searched the web for a solution and came across his post on page 7 of this thread. I'm using Vista Premium 32-bit on an HP pavillion dv6235.
So I started by updating my Conexant High Definition Audio drivers to the latest using Windows Update. As cursedZeroX points out, the file CHDART.SYS was left in my \System32\Drivers\ directory despite it no longer being used as CHDART32.SYS was now the active one with the update. So I simply deleted the old CHDART.SYS from WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\, that's it. And then, next reboot, SP1 appeared in Windows Update. Thanks!
I previously hadn't been updating my Conexant audio drivers using Windows Update because the last time I did my audio stopped working. But this time, with the latest one made available by Windows Update, they appear to be working fine, no problems. Sound is working fine. BTW I do not have any HP software installed or running, I did a clean Vista install from a retail DVD (using the key on my laptop) right after I bought the laptop, I couldn't be bothered to deal with pre-loaded third party and HP crap.
