I'm got a little tired of all this waiting. I bought a $1500 mountain bike and $500 on hiking gear/shoes etc instead.
I'll re-look at the Envy laptop scenario in a couple months.
-
Lol enjoy the bike. Probably a wise decision...Hope you return in the near future tho.... -
I'd love a SB Envy, but no one will get one in their hands before April 1st. -
She easily could be lying to you or telling the truth. The former scenario is highly more likely given HPs past history. -
-
I too went over to the dark-side and could not wait. I was having issues with my car, so I traded it in for a 2011 VW GTI. So now my new portable computer is the NAV that came with it haha...not very powerful but still very functional
As with some others, I'll revisit the Envy line in the coming months. -
if we don't hear something this weekend, I'll have to bust a couple of rumors and suggest that either the SATA disease is putting things off longer than expected, or HP is not allowing web orders with a lengthy ship time (i.e. open up orders later to reduce the "time-to-ship". if either of these is the case I'd still expect something in late March though (when Intel ramp up is starting to accelerate), and not to have to wait clear into April to order this thing
good luck with the GTI charlesspivak; hope we see you again around here and tempt you into a SB Envy 17 anyway, lol -
New Theory... HP wants to load the new line of Envy products with WebOS. So expect something "soon"... and when I say "soon" I mean Summer...
-
interesting - HP is now announcing again the DV-quad Sandy Bridge products, with no mention of the Envy. this may suggest that Envy is getting pushed out perhaps another month

P.S. Neither Sheila, nor her associate sent me a reply. Ugh.... guess tonight I'll write Conrad.

not surprised... these emailboxes are probably filtered to ignore emails from the outside, lol
Anyway, just considering all the data we have, esp the strength of the 'end of february' information (which was established before the Intel issue), and the speed at which Intel is ramping up the fixed silicon, I'd suggest we are still in a March'ish timeframe. I"m not ready to throw out the "end of february" data -- only to adjust it by some factor that considers the Intel fix. My personal read at this time suggests that the first SB Envy 17 shipments will occur before the end of March, even if it is slow going at first. -
I really love the work they've done with the new DV7.
-Dark color
-Curve cuts
-Quad Speakers and sub-woofer
-New mousepad
-Coolsense
-USB 3.0 ports
-Finger Print reader
-BluRay Burner
Envy 17 design was OK a year ago when first introduced, but it is completely outdated (at least for me) today.
I never like the plain square cuts of it no matter how much I loved the machine.
I am crossing my fingers that finally the Envy 17 will be a luxury DV7 and by that I mean to include all the features from the new DV7 plus many more.
I am crossing my fingers on that, hopefully HP will not disappoint me once again.. -
Anyway, like you hard core HP Envy fans, I'm not going to stray.... since I have my pacifier for now...cough costcocoughBy the way, my dv7-4183cl is due back at Costco by March 11..... Looks like the dv7-4283cl is my next laptop unless they will get new merchandise in the next couple of weeks.
KJ -
Coolsense is been confirmed for the new Envy 17 SB and Coolsense alone requires internal redesign of the laptop. One of the CoolSense main requirements is not to place computer parts that are getting hot to the palm rest. Envy 17 have the HDDs next to the mousepad (like the current DV7). So HP will fully redesign the internal part in order to get Coolsense and I see no reason why to redesign the internal and not update the external design to meet the 2011 needs (exactly what happen with the DV7).
Other clue. The cheaper DV7 will now have redesigned Beats speakers in the front according to HP are way better than the current generation plus they added two extras bellow the screen. So HP has two options here: One either release the Envy 17 as it is with only two speakers, which makes no sense to release their top of the line laptop with two speakers and their cheaper DV7 with 4(!), or redesign the damn thing and add the extra goodies there including the two extra speakers.
The other thing that is currently pissing me off and needs to end ASAP is the BluRay Burner/Fingerprint reader/Full HD Screen fiasco.
If you want finger print you need to get DV7, if you want BluRay burner you need to get DV7. If you want Full HD screen and good graphic card you need to go with the Envy 17. If you want all of the above you cannot have them in one package no matter how much money you want to spend.
Stupid micro-marketing tricks that a company of the size of HP, a company that is the No1 computer manufacturer in the world, simply does not need to follow and is ashame they do. -
No one really gave a good reason as to why HP did not include a basic finger print reader in the Envy line. I've Googled it, but no real answer. The only thing I can think of is maybe HP wanted the "sleek" trim look...and so they thought a finger print reader would distract from the basic clean look/lines of the laptop? I admit, I got used to the finger print reader in my Costco bought dv7-4183cl. A Bluray burner should be included in the new Envy 17 3D SB edition.....
nMIK-3 is right. All these features and more should be included in the Envy 17s without a doubt.
P.S. I'm still giving HP until the 27th to bring news of the Envy 17/3D SB edition....I know its unofficial, but still, something.... otherwise I'll be a bit put off, but not to the point of getting something else.
KJ -
Yeah, I like the sound of that and add
Synaptics ClickPad IS Series 3
another USB 3.0 port (doesn't the new Dell XPS 17 3D have 2 USB 3.0 ports and the new Sony 16 inch f series have 2 USB 3.0 ports). -
Killa, nMik-3 -- yes I agree. That doesn't make it true, mind you, it just means we are thinking alike lol
. let me recap the history:
The SB envy and first-round SB DVs were both announced back on January 4. SB DV round 1 appeared January 9 (with the hidden-at-the-time SATA disease and some click pad problems). But then, one month later, all of a sudden HP announces a DV refresh (with retro touch pad and many Envy-like goodies), right before the SATA disease broke. The (January 4) SB Envy was also announced very briefly at that time
freeze frame: At that time we had (still credible) rumors that the January 4 -announced SB Envy was to appear in Late February, and the apperance of SB DVs already in the wild strengthend this opinion. The SB DV round 2 products were just announced, strengthening the opinon that SB Envy was still on track for end of February.
But then the bad news started to come in. HP pulled references to the both the SB Envy and the Envy-like SB DV (round 2), stopped selling January 4 SB DVs, and went silent except to deal with the arranty return scenarios for January 4 SB DVs already in the wild. Competitors pulled their SB products as well.
And Silence continued on the SB Envy front. some of us thought well maybe the SB Envy wouldn't be delayed very much, and that HP would push it through and deal with the Intel issue at the same time. We all knew that the Intel issue was behind any delays, but having not heard a peep about the SB Envy we wondered if it would burst onto the scene at any moment.
But the continued SB Envy silence was deafening. I, among others, started speculating that the Intel issue had really put a major delay into HPs Envy release plan, and that the longer time went on, the more outdated this January 4-announced platform would become. But with continued silence from HP all we could do was wait.
Then today I noticed HP suddenly starting to push their SB Dvs again -- the updated cool models with the retro touchpad and Envy-like things. This reminded me that the double-refresh of the DV was kind of a one-two punch: First the Sandy Bridge architecture itsel, followed immediately by some Envy-like coolness and a retro Touchpad. and the DV community rejoiced.
But the SB Envy silence is deafening. When you consider that the "reserve one now" approach is active today (for round 2 DVs), it must mean that production ramping plans are on target for some planned release date. The fact that they have removed the "reserve one now" teaser for the SB Envy tells me that plans have changed. Evidence startts to mount that SB Envy has in fact experienced a significant delay, and that its original (Jan 4) design is getting older as the days go by.
THen nMik-3 draws a fine comparison between the January 4 SB Envy and the round-2 Envy, making a strong case that HP better not disapoint the world by releasing a January 4 era product in March.
I agree with you guys, and Hope that HP is using this "imposed downtime" to re-think the January 4 SB Envy... and that it will contain something other than the 1080p display and a GP to differentiate it from the DVs!
as for fingerprint readers and Blu-Ray writers -- those aren't that important to me, but lets see how things go. The "sleekness" factor may be behind the lack of fingerprint reader, and the slot-load optical drive may be a limitation preventing Blu-Ray writing. Short of those two items its hard for me to consider what they might do to the Envy to widen it's gap with the DV. I don't think they will take the time to re-design the MB for 16GB RAM but who knows... 1600MHz RAM maybe? -
Again, I'm not going to think badly....given that there is an unofficial expectation of a Feb. 27th release date, and even if not....as dlleno mentioned...with the delay due to the faulty chip....I'm going to take another guess and say.... March 15th...either sooner or around then...HP seriously cannot hold this much longer. I'd like to know either way what they plan for the Envy 17 3D SB edition, if anything...
P.S. Please don't take my "cancellation" thoughts too seriously, oh, and forgive me please, I am only human.
KJ -
Well.....I don't plan to wait this long but I'm also thinking that there is probably going to be new features added to a updated SB ENVY 17 3D in the Fall. Don't they usually update notebooks for the holiday shopping season? I don't know HP's history of how many times they update a notebook during the year, but as I recall isn't that when the ENVY 17 3D version appeared?
I would like new SB ENVY 17 features now also but just saying..... -
the Envy is HP's flagship consumer notebook, and I seriously doubt that the SATA disease has nothing more than delayed the refresh. In my humble opinion, HP is not going to skip a release. I'd say the worst case is that we get january-4 era technology and the same clickpad in March, although on the latter point I personally think we'll see a change there, to either discrete button touchpad, or an IS3 clickpad. March 15 feels a little too specific to me, but imho we do have a good chance for March 15-30.
So -- think about how quickly HP turned around the DV. we might see the same one-two punch with the Envy, which could mean another refresh in the summer. yea i do believe the 3D released shortly before xmas, but the SB DVs were refreshed right after xmas -- so all we can say is that releases happen all the time, at least 3 times if not 4 per year it would appear.
oh, and notebook303 re: complete re-design on account of Coolsense. you have a point, but I'm not yet convinced that the re-design will be quite that comprehensive (However, if it were then we could see 16G RAM too!). Coolsense is more about airflow management (vent placment, ducts, heat pipes) and better heat-insulating materials, rather than component placement, so I'm not so sure we will see the HDD moved away from the palm rest. who knows, though that will be interesting to see.
as for differentiating the Envy from the DVs (other than display and GP), possibilities include a clickpad that works (perhaps IS3), rather than the discrete button touchpad, 1600 MHz RAM, cheeper processor clock speed upgrades (really. $200 for a 10% increase?), different keyboard.
The next refresh will probably be a processor upgrade from Intel -- likely to include more performance increases and DX11 implimented on chip -
Hope springs eternal.....
I have faith that our patience will be rewarded. -
Ok, guys, I'm actively following Envy 17 3d and the alienware r3 threads because I'm particularly attached to those two (currently have the r3 but will be returning it and waiting for the delivery of current envy 17 3d (third one, returned two for this reason and that). So the question I have is what exactly do you expect to find in the SB version of Envy other than the bragging rights? Well, the CPU's gonna be faster (alienware is indeed faster than my previous i7-840-based envy in benchmarks), better graphics (6000 series) will, again, give you better benchmarks and the coolsense MIGHT make the units cooler but please forgive me if i don't hold my breath on that. The reason i'm pointing this out is HP will improve the airflow but single fan will still be cooling both CPU and GPU (i don't have the details, just thinking out loud here).
But bear with me here... I have heavily tested alienware and envy on crysis and the observable difference is practically non-existent (actually, because of the optimus-enabled nvidia 460m in non-3d alienware, crysis autodetects medium settings on native 1080p and envy was bragging the high settings) but the gameplay is practically the same (except for envy getting hot although still playable while alienware keeps its cool).
So, again, what keeps you hoping and waiting and torturing yourselves instead of enjoying what's quite good enough already? The longer HP delays the SB envy roll-out, the shorter time there will be to enjoy it before there's a new config released either next holiday season or next CES. We all know that computers are like girlfriends - as soon as you make a commitment to one, in the next week or two there will be an even hotter one available but if you wait for what's gonna be available next, you might end up being a virgin -
Well most of us have clear benefits in mind. cooling, switchable graphics are among them. and 8x performance gain for doing real work like Excel. Moreover, having been married longer than the age of most of the kids here with short attention spans, I don't share the analogy, and leave the bragging rights to those with laptops from another world.
-
Please do not see this as trolling or an invitation to the argument. I indeed was merely asking for the reasons to wait for a fuzzy target date instead of settling for a good enough option. -
Yeah, I'm still on board, no worries dlleno.
-
Besides while its painfully slow to wait for the refresh of the Envy line I figure that those of us who are anticipating it have waited so long that we might as well wait just a little bit longer for more information...
I'm working and doing plenty of other things to occupy my time and while my current laptop is a POS it's doing okay for the moment and I got the Western Digital My Passport (USB 3.0 version) portable external hard drive to back up stuff nightly...
The more I think about it though the more I'm starting to think That I'm gonna just stick with a traditional HDD...unless HP offers a 256 GB SSD. I'm afraid that 128 will be way to slow at the rate that I'm downloading TV shows, music, etc. etc....
The main reason I don't want to buy an SSD and install myself is because I know it will be impossible to get the CoolSense software (assuming its software) to work once I install the new one and install Windows 7 ultimate to it....
I'd much rather just do as that other guy suggested and just use Windows Anytime Upgrade and enter my Win7 Ultimate key.... -
I was thinking of configuring mine with an SSD for the OS and a 640TB 7200 HDD for data. THe SSD will cut down on noise and heat, while maximizing OS performance, while the 7200 RPM HDD is about as good as you can get with rotating disk technology these days.
I gotta agree with you though -- sure would like to see a 256GB SSD...
You're making a good point about after-market SSDs. In addition to getting coolsense to work, DriveSMart will also be difficult to get working -- The desired configuration has to be supported by HP, and all it takes is for different mfgs to point fingers at each other with no one taking full end-to-end responsibility... -
Sandy Bridge rumor roundup 2/21
Since the intel chip set issue, HP has been strangly silent on the SB Envy Front. Instead, HP has refreshed the DV series with some envy-like things, gone back to the two-button touchpad, and put up a "reserve one now" splash page. Yet, no new evidence specific to the SB Envy has come in, except that one rumor has been busted - no doubt due to delays associated with the Intel SATA disease.
credible: the information makes sense and the source appears credible
plausible: emerging information that may strengthen in credibility over time
not credible: the information is inconsistent, no references have been cited, and/or the source has not demonstrated credibility
busted: The weight of evidence indicates that the information is false
dlleno and Killa Joe have suggested, based on the strength of facebook comments by Molly Athp, those coming from the HP Sales call center, and based on how the Dv7t-quad was introduced, that we should hear from HP on or before 2/15 and that products could be available in some U.S. retail stores by the following weekend and available for online order by February 20. status=busted
timcfox reports that a sales rep has scheduled a purchase callback for February 27, which implies that the SB Envy introduction could occur over that weekend instead. status=plausible
several NBR members have speculated that the SATA disease will not affect the ability to order a SB Envy by end of february, but that delivery may be pushed out. status=credible but the ability to order an SB Envy by end of February is looking grim
NBR member andyguk has learned from the HP Store UK that they do not expect an SB refresh "within the coming weeks or months". and also mentioned that the U.S market is "more advanced in trialing newer products". The implication here is that some countries may lag the U.S. in new product intros and that the non-US countries may in fact be later than February. status = credible
charlesspivak and dlleno have speculated that HP might add features (maybe a new click pad?) to the Envy 17 beyond those announced on January 4 perhaps by making use of the forced delay relating to the Intel SATA disease status= plausible. This could be, although adding features this late in the product cycle is difficult.
some NBR members speculated that HP would use the much-hyped WebOS tablet/smartphone press event on February 9th, to also announce some Sandy Bridge Envy availability information. status=busted The WebOS event has come and gone without any such announcement [/b]
an unknown source on NBR postulated that HP would make an announcement on January 24 and even promised to order a Dell if there was no HP announcement by this date. This date seemed to catch popularity but has no basis other than someone's opinion. status=busted
jeff5886 joined the forums to tell us that he has a friend who is an HP sales rep -- who tells of an HP internal sales team conference call on Thursday January 20 8pm (no time zone given), and promises to give Jeff5886 any new information. status: busted.
NBR member husky55 reports from the dv7-quad forum that, on the strength of HP reps' comments on the HP forums, that HP "will announce very shortly their policy re the Intel SB design flaw, possibly today". status=busted no announcement was made at that time -
Ha, thanks dlleno I needed a good chuckle. LOL... I know you mean 640gigs.
P.S. Wonder if one day 640TB SSDs will be available, or maybe in the future some new form of fast, slim, silent storage will be out and make SSDs look like Atari 2600 systems!
KJ -
yikes! lol yes .64TB shall we say
-- and about some new form of memory. think of this: the only reason we have hard drives is because the amount of storage we need is too expensive. if this constraint is lifted, then we can have really big SSD's but then there is no reason to call it an SSD it can be just part of the memory system (no HDD controller) where the OS is pre-loaded into silicon.
-
-
Speaking of 3D DriveGuard, I have managed to hack at the version for my 8530w a bit, to put the "hpdskflt" filter on specific drives, rather than the whole disks class.
-
There is some indication that the M17xR3 might start taking orders again in 1 week as mentioned in a review video by laptopmag.com
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/556738-m17xr3-wihdi-6970m-2gb.html
This is the first mention of a Sandy Bridge laptop shipping again so this may be an indication that HP might start shipping again soon too. -
and I read it on gizmodo and engadget that macbook pro refresh is probably going to be announced on feb 24 with sandy bridge which might suggest otehr companies might release their sandy products too
and sandy bridge Dell XPS has already been released and available on Dell UK site as well as italy, japan etc for order.
I waited this long ever since December and now I don't knowI might just buy Dell XPS 17 sandy bridge instead of waiting for hp envy if it's released sooner in the US. Even though I like HP Envy a lot more
-
Thanks! You made my night, lol.
KJ -
maybe some light starting to finally show at the end of tunnel. what's interesting to me is that HP is splashing the DVs but still silent about the Envy. Also, I can't find any new Envy 17 drivers out on the hp ftp site but I have noticed a Sandy Bridge switchable graphics driver for the DV7 aimed at the AMD Radeon 6770M GP. It appears that the DV 7 is coming up in the world
-
Dell has their new SB XPS models on the website now. Estimated shipping is 3/15. You'd think HP would want to get their configurator going so that everyone doesn't rush to buy the Dell's instead.
-
...and the DV watchers rejoice, while the Envy watchers are kept in darkness
-
Anyway I also mentioned the SB update again and re-iterated that I wouldn't be pleased if a newer model was release in the coming months. Here's what the guy had to say about that,
"Ive checked our updated intake plans and theres no mention of any model higher / better than the Envy 17-1195ea (3D model) being released in UK The intake plan shows visibility from now, up until late July, 2012.
Due to the way technology changes so quickly, there is a chance another model will be released at some point in 2012. Generally speaking, any new model released wont be advertised or become public knowledge until a few weeks prior to release date."
This was from a Senior Sales Consultant (HP UK)
So can we take that as a no no for UK this year? If so that does atleast make me happier purchasing now and not having to bite the bullet if a snazzier refresh came out in... say the Summer.
Anyway I think I'm going to make the purchase this week or next. There have been very few reviews of the Envy 17 3D so I'll see what I can do to help out on that front when it arrives
Andy -
KJ -
We've had a delay already. Enough is enough.
KJ -
I hope you are succesful. meanwhile I can try to keep tabs on the ftp site for emerging drivers. I'm just astonished at the utter silence on this topic, compared to all the DV happiness going on right now.
-
Andy, Killa -- If I may offer an alternate perspective. as I was reading your post, Andy, there were two essential messages coming from the Sales rep; First, he said there is nothing on the horizon for SB Envy. Second, he said the horrizon is often not known until a few weeks before release day!
Generally speaking, any new model released won’t be advertised or become public knowledge until a few weeks prior to release date.
So I would not read into this that the SB Envy is absolutely not coming to the UK. Its rather like the Mary the HP Sales rep, reported here as saying no Envy releases on her February or March list, when Mary could still be surprised by a late-March release. As the UK rep stated, HP can spring something on us just a few weeks before release.
I'm just pointing out that we really have not heard the final word yet. HP's silence on this topic is approaching eerie, if you will (at least mysterious), which suggests an element of surprise and the fact that traditional sales channels are not going to be reliable sources of information.
I do realize that it is common (as you reported earlier, Andy) for HP to consider the U.S market differently and release in the U.S first -- we just don't know if this behavior will apply to the SB Envy or not. what was the timing of today's Envy -- did it release in the U.S. much before the UK release? -
i feel hp is trying to merge the dv line and the envy line more and more now. Like in the cnet news they said the new dv design is more like the envy series. So what we got now? a DV with the look of envy with the same processor ( 2630 prob in every SB machine) just pretty much a better graphic card and a backlight keyboard.
-
no kidding noodle -- the gap is very narrow now. unless they push the envy into a more serious desktop replacement/gaming world, the only difference between DV and Envy will be the 1080 display, 3D, and a small jump in GP horsepower. They've got to push the Envy further or risk loosing the market segment.
it makes me wonder if they really did skip/cancel the "February" (rumored) SB Envy 17 release (announced Jan 4) and the next one will be even later but with cooler stuff... like 16 GB 1600MHz RAM, even better GP, newest Intel processor with DX11 in silicon, 256GB SDD, higher-clocked processors, ...
HP's silence is suggesting that this decision point may well have been under consideration. But lets hang tight and see what the splash page does, and how the drivers begin to emerge on the ftp site. One thing HP did was squash all of our rumors big timein no small part thanks to Intel!
-
H-P shares lose 12% late
Well, that's cause they didn't have any ENVY 17" 3D laptops for us to buy

Think HP learned something?
KJLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
HP deserves all that and more....
And given their recent webOS announcements I see them failing even harder in the future. Apparently no one at that damn company seems to grasp the concept a lot of people simply want a touchscreen only phone. One that is NOT saddled with the name "Pre 3"
Come on HP... -
First surprise came with the ATI 6770 GPU. A lot was expected the new DV7 to have a lower end graphic card. Let's just wait and see what happens.
