yes you can. tridef is a little fickle with certain games for smoe reason though. for example, i can only run 3d mode on dirt 2 at 1080p, if i switch resolutions it disables 3d. most other games will let you change resolutions.

tryvthe iz3d demo out some of my games didn't play nice with tridef, bad company 2 and transformers wfc. iz3d in some cases uses less processing power and games run better. i think tridef looks nicer though in most instances. for me, iz3d was a must buy b/c i can actually do 3d output to my sony bravia 3d using izz3d, not with tridef.

 I tought we already concluded that the Envy 3D cannot output 3D to external display..... are you doing it a lower resolution at 720p @120 hz?
sorry if I'm a bit confused right now, just other stuff on my mind.....

well, the envy 17 3d cannot output 3d blurays to external display, at least not right now. but you can use it to output games in 3d. in fact i believe just about any notebook or computer can be used to output games in 3d with a good gpu.

    explanation:
iz3d lets you play games in 3d mode, using side-by-side as one of the options. most 3d tvs have side-by-side as an option for 3d format. the only downside to side-by-side mode is it actually cuts your resolution in half. so you can play mass effect 2 in true 1080p res on your envy's screen but using side by side mode for 3d on your 3d tv you will get a low res game, even if supposedly playing in 1080. recommend you download the iz3d trial and give it a shot. also, side by side mode runs at 60hz, not 120hz.

Killajoe, like I said mine was shipped two weeks early. I dont see how yours wont ship at least a little early.

By the way, after having it a full weekend I am in LOVE with this thing. Its such a pleasure to be in front of it, Im always thinknig of reasons just to use it. =) My one and only gripe is the mousepad. It can be a bit tedious using it. But using an external mouse is the easy fix.

frankieo11, thanks. Perhaps mine will ship early January...hope...ahhaha

and I only use a mouse...99% of the time. :p When I'm in bed I sometimes take the mouse pad and mouse with me...and other times in bed I use the built in moue pad...which I've never been a fan of.

freespace303, hope yours will be perfect too!

OFFTOPIC: Have any of you guys used a nettop like the Acer Revo 3700 to use it as a HTPC? How have been your experience with it?

So I JUST got off the phone with the HP guy. My estimated ship date of the 21st, which is today, got delayed to the 24th. Big surprise eh? lol. I asked him if it was possible for them to upgrade to 2 day shipping, and he said that's what they were already going to do, and cause of Christmas and FEDEX not running Monday, that the est delivery date should be the 28th.

He then told me that they had a few options to give me for this trouble. One being 10% off my order, a free printer, and I can't remember the third option at the moment. (it wasn't as good as the other options anyway)

I went ahead and told him I would like the 10%, and asked him if the 2 day shipping upgrade was still included, and he said yes. I just have to call him (he gave me his name and number) when I get my tracking info, because he can't credit me the 10% until it ships.

All in all I come out on top, cause I had regular shipping before, and it would have probably taken that long to get to my house anyway (28th) AND NOW I get 10% off!

freespace303, this 10% is usually given ONLY if there is a delay in shipping date?

I ordered on the December 21th. I did not take note of the shipping dates until you pointed it out. Interesting.

I had just ordered a SONY:
    Product: US-VPCF1390X-LBOM
    Component: LED Backlit Keyboard
    Component: No Fresh Start
Component: Adobe Bundle (Free - $448 value)
Component: Blu-ray Disc™ Read Only Drive
Component: Microsoft® Office 2010 Starter (Click More Info for details.)
    Component: Standard capacity battery
Component: Norton Internet Security™ 2010 (30 Day Trial)
    Component: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 425M GPU (1GB VRAM)
    Component: No Engraving
Component: Intel® Core™ Quad i7-840QM processor (1.86GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.20GHz
Component: 16.4" VAIO Full HD Premium Display (1920x1080)
Component: 500GB Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm)
    Component: Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
    Component: 6GB (4GBx1 + 2GBx1) DDR3-SDRAM-1333

But they kept pushing back the date so I ordered a HP instead. Funny thing is the SONY finally came, but was rejected by our shipping department because we told SONY to cancel the order before it was sent out. I hate dealing with their customer service which is much like HP's.

2010Lotus, congradts and I hope your Envy 3D will be perfect. ;) I linked you below to my thread about Envy 17 3D YouTube videos. There are some really great ones there. Check out armoured's video on Bad Company 2, looks amazing! Love the smoke effects. I would love that game and would recommend it by looks alone.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-envy-hdx/536870-regarding-envy-17-3d-youtube-videos.html

Don't forget to post your videos on my thread. Hopefully you have an HD camera and can make high quality vids. You may do an unboxing, review, or gaming, whatever you like. Everyone here on NBR is ver friendly and willing to help out.

Just checked HP.com and guess what? Yeah!!! My laptop has just shipped! That is a couple weeks before expected completion...as I am aware a couple of you also had theirs shipped early. Expected to be here on December 29th instead of January 15....

So...I am kinda of a mixed bag right now if you know what I mean.... On one hand I'm glad I'll get it sooner than expected, on the other.... I was kinda glad I was gonna get in on January 15 as that would give me more time to decide if I want to actually keep it.... As I'm having some second thoughts...Mostly affected by armoured's decision to return his, but a lot of you have mentioned various issues and I'm concerned.

Once more I have to test her out, make sure no defects, yadda yadda, but most of all performance. The only downside right now is no Bluray writer and no HDMI 1.4 to view 3D content on HDTV 3Ds... :( I was hoping to wait a bit longer and see if HP comes out with a new update to the Envy 17 3D to install those new updates, of course also not an underclocked video card...bah. Well, 21 days from December 29 to decide if I want her or not. I will pay close attention to the news about laptop manufactures coming out with the new processor, but mainly with HP since I really like many of the features of the Envy 17 3D......

P.S. Jose, have you gotten yours yet??? I know you returned it earlier than I did, so... let us know.

KJ: Sorry for my late response.... but... YEAAAHHHHHH mine too is coming 12/29... I also wanted more time to decide if keeping the laptop or just ask for a refund to buy the new versions with SB and AMD 6000series. I guess all will depend if the benefits are noticeable vs the price.

In January 6 (i guess) we can hear more about all the new technologies that will be unveiled for 2011 in the International CES 2011 (website: 2011 International CES, January 6-9 )

...and guys remember to do unboxing AND boxing? pictures hehehehehh ...this time I will keep it for at least 15-17 days to enjoy it....

noodle, the refund of $50? Also noodle, are you gonna "play" with the Envy a bit and decide if you are going to keep her?

Jose, guess we're in the same boat. For sure let's keep up with the new developments and see if its worth it or not to keep this baby.... I too will have it around for at least 15 or so days before truly making a decision to keep it or not. At least I will be able to more fully appreciate this machine since the first time around I foolishly sent it back the very next day.

Jetpac, there is a good chance yours might ship out early too! Just keep an eye out on your email next week.... I am sure you'll get the HP email. Best of luck.

    Happy holidays everyone! :p

it will be nice to have some fellow envy 17 3d users out in the wild. again, would love to compare notes on 3d tweaking for games, etc. Also want to see if the i7-840qm upgrade is worth it. I may splurge at least for an 820 at some point. We shall see.

So after a long talk with a friend inregards to the new SB processors coming out twards the end of January, I have decided that our Envy 17 3D will be heading back to HP as soon as it comes in. Not to do so would be a waste of money.

You might want to just tinker with it a bit at least for 15 days. Get an idea what it can do, the good and the bad. Then, when you get the Sandy Bridge verison Envy 17 3D, when it comes out, you will be able to see the difference if any and hopefully appreciate it. ;)

I agree, mine arrives in a couple days, and I'm going to use it for 21 days and see what it's like. I'm sure within those 21 days we'll hear something about any new Envys that are coming out, if it turns out to be true, considering CES is Jan 5th.

Mine is on FedEx truck being delivared today! Should be here before 10am.
I'll hold on to it untill after Jan 7th. We should hear news about the SB in more detail and who is going to have it available and for what cost? Then I'll either ship it back or enjoy.

I got my Envy 3D delivered. No dents or issues as of now. It heats lesser than my previous non 3D Envy. This did not come with the norton 60 day trial,so i installed Avast free antivirus. Any other suggestion on antivirus?

Ok got mine this morning, and to update this thread a bit if it helps any1.

I got two laptops side by side for comparasion. The new laptop is nice, no problems found yet on the laptop itself (cant say for operating issues yet as im only couple hours into this thing).

So first, as some of u know there was a shaking medal base on the number pad on my old one, this new one's base is solid however it still sound a bit different from clicking the main keyboard sounds, but i guess its due to the optical drive under it leaving some open space to make sound. Secondly there are no dents on this one compared to the old one. Third, the touchpad is fully inside the base as when my finger pass through the panel to the touchpad there is no up and downs compared to my old one where the touchpad is raised a bit. Fourth, there are no lose space around the sides and it feels very solid, the only space i found is on the left panel side a lil but it is very solid so no big deal.

conclusion, im keeping this unless something is wrong with the system. Btw a weird thing i found is when looking at the vent and see through the laptop the two have kind of different position of hardwares, althoguh i dont know what they are :p

and btw to answer RanjithK's question, I suggest you use microsoft security essentials for the laptop, it is very fast and small. Some say its not as powerful some say its well enough. I use it and so far its pretty good.

Edit:btw one other thing i notice is that the new glasses have kind of a sandy finish instead of the old one with the smooth finish. I like the new one better, dont know if they did it on purpose

    Yep that was short lived.
Mine came and went within hours. I had the chance to open it up and play with it and it was exactly what I thought it would be. The down side was the size. WOW! and that power cord needs a seperate tote bag for travel. Why such a large thing?

Anyways, in the end I put it back in the box and processed a RMA and took it to fedEx all within 3 hours.

It was a really nice PC, and I am sure many of you that have it and will keep it will enjoy it.

But my needs are mostly business and so I am looking at the Lenovo Y560p with the SB processor which ships Jan 11th.

Mine was delivered yesterday, one day early, and noone was there to sign for the package so it will ship again tomorrow, or I'll just try and drop by the fedex facility in the morning, considering it's in the same city where I live, otherwise I have to wait till around 4:30pm, ugh!

Mine got here a day early and no one was here to sign for it. I grabbed the slip and flew up to the FedEx since it was hella close. So right now I am posting from my new HP Envy 17 3D and I love it so far. Only thing I don't like or haven't gotten used to is the arrow buttons and touch pad. I have the logictech g500 mouse so that takes care of the touchpad. Wish the arrow keys were norm. Oh well, I'll adapt. Good luck all!

I found out the night around 6:30pm that they tried delivering it a day early. I had to go to work then so I decided to pick it up this morning.

I did almost the same, picked up at 9am (the time they opened) this morning. (just got off a 12 hour shift and didnt feel like waiting till around 4pm) I actually had to find the right place considering there were 3 locations in my area and I couldn't find which was the right one off the site. The first place google took me to didn't exist, and ended up being one of those drop boxes. It was now 8:45am and I needed to find it before they started their deliveries.

I tried the second place which was open due to it being FedEx Freight, the nice lady at the desk listened tom my situation and didn't mind helping me out. She looked at my tracking number and directed me to the correct location, which was FedEx Express, 3 miles away. I went there and explained that they tried delivering it yesterday but no one was there, so instead of of trying again today I would just like to pick it up. She looked at my tracking number and went into the back to look for it. My eyes lit up as she brought a black box out to the desk. She looked at my license/ID and made me sign the sheet saying I picked it up, and that was that! All in all everybody I dealt with were very polite and professional. FedEx FTW!

Now I'm about to unbox it, I can't wait! Actually I have to wait till my girl gets done workin from home on her laptop. I gotta get her to hold the camera as I do the unboxing.

So the 3D screen can be used with Bluray 3D movies and games that are coded to support the 3D display? Has anyone reviewed 3D Bluray movies on it yet?

Those are hard to come by no? Anyway, the 3D gaming is amazing, at least Black Ops in 3D! I was beyond amazed. I posted in another thread...looking through the scope at the start of the game...what a feeling...the look of glass, the dirt, atmosphere... That is why I love the 3D more than I expected....
