Hate to tell ya but everything is mass produced in a 3rd world country thats why we can afford to buy them.
-
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this but I was watching a movie that I had seen before on my old system and I noticed some contrast issues where the colors seemed to have a much more abrupt gradient than I was used to.
I dug around in the catalyst settings and it seems that some of the settings under Video->Advanced Color were turned on and when I turned those off, I started getting a much better contrast profile when playing videos. -

living conditions in china are third world for over 80 percent of the population actually.
-
Chinese workers live slave lifestyles. The companies that produce these products often house them at the facility; they sleep in bunk beds, 10 people in a small room, working 16 hour days.
Google "foxcon suicides" and prepare to get a glimpse into the life of the people that make our toys. Their buildings have netting around them to catch the bodies as they fly out the windows. China is most certainly a 3rd world country where there is no middle class, only super rich or super poor. But that's beginning to happen here too so...
Sad but true. -
Thank you Svander, China is ABSOLUTELY a third world country... Im just saying I dont really have as much confidence in the quality it SHOULD be. How can just about everyone have a defect (even if just cosmetic) with their laptop?? This is HP for Christmas sake! The reality is American companies have outsourced their workders to other countries and quality HAS taken a hit.
-
Well, since this is the "Waiting on the Envy 17 3D thread".... while we wait I suppose we can discuss World issues such as this.
While it may very well be true that oursourcing our products to be made in other countries may affect quality control....we have to realize something...
How many current products are made 100% in the USA today? I am sure not too many. How many of those items are electronic? I would guess... close to 0% maybe? You might find a wooden doll or a broom made 100% in the USA, or an easy one...the American flag...mostly I think, lol.
Seriously though...just think for a minute and realize that we live in a World economy. For example, take Envy. (What I'm about to say does not mean its true, I'm generalizing). Ok, since we have many parts to the Envy from keyboard/plastics, to the body metal and etching, to the internal chips, screen, etc... the point is it may not all be made in China, yes most parts today are, but parts come from different countries to produce a complete product.
We need to start seeing the big picture.... The computer ultimately is completed in China, but its probably not all 100% Chinese made, and its not 100% American...anyway, sorry for the rant. ;P
P.S. Still I feel even though our Envy's are completed in China that does not mean they should not go through a rigourous quality assurance process inorder to assure us we will have a defect free product which we paid premium prices for. HP/China needs to hire supervising department to handle this Q&A.... and yeah, well, increase pay, give them better living conditions..but that maybe just be wishful thinking..
KJ -
Joe, you make some good points. But Im sure HP wasnt always made in China. What quality items come out of China though? When you look at a certain item and see it was "Made In China" what thought goes through your mind? I'll tell you what goes through mine: "This is a piece of crap".
-
Talk about thinking, or no thinking when they made such products/toys!
Intended for children, my God! This is not even a quality control issue, its just blind stupidity..wow, sorry I really got off track.
Not sure what the status is on the toy issue, hopefully World outrage has made China rethink using lead paint on their toys which kids put in ther mouths..sheesh.
P.S. Hope our Envy's are mostly aluminum and not lead....(Its heavy enough as it is)

frankieo
I think you are too generalizing in stating that 'Made In China'=crap...
I am pretty sure all iPhones (regardless of generation) and iPods and MacBook Pros are made in China and they are pretty good quality (no, i'm not an apple fanboy... I have a MacBookPro but runs windows on it 80% of the time). I believe the difference between high and low quality has to do with how the product is designed to be manufactured. Apple has a good point in their unibody design in that it does minimize issues like ours to an extent.
I am sorry to see that you are swimming in crap everyday cause most things you use ARE made in China.

Slightly out of topic, but to those who are thinking of doing the same (run Win on Macbook):
Remember to get a Macbook that does not have dual GPU. I have found out the hard way that my MBP has slower (hence cooler) Intel GPU as well as GeForce GPU. It is all fine in OSx environment (I can switch between the 2 depending on workload), but in Windows environment, you can ONLY use GeForce GPU. Apple didn't enable the native Intel GPU in their EFI if you are booting into Windows OS.
So... The end result... if you are running Windows on Macbook Pro, it drains battery like there's no tomorrow and it also makes laptop hot enough to cook an egg on.

To the people who have gotten their Envy 17 3Ds, where are the pictures, reviews, thoughts, impressions, videos, feelings, and such? Share the love yal!

The BC2 vid is just what I've been waiting for. Thank you so much. Mine will ship on the 21st, and that's the game I will be playing the most on it. -
Recommended accesories:
-Extended battery
-Laptop cooler
-Mouse
-Screw driver
-
Also, before unboxing:
-Check for holes, dents to the boxes
-Cross your fingers...
Check for:
-Click hard and several times all the keyboard's keys, look for weird sounds.
-Watch 3D videos and look for ghosts.
-Play the lastest games at max settings and play avatar and look for skipped videos.
... then enjoy your 3D laptop for a while before packing again... be patient and check frequently this forum several times during the day... until next exchange.. -
P.S. Just to let you guys know, HP updated their Envy 17 3D ordering options, now allowing you to order the Restore kit with your initial order!
KJ -
Ya man, trust me when I say I will be testing the crap out of it in those 21 days I have. I went ahead and bought that drop and spill plan too. Considering all the LAN parties I've been too, where we were drinking energy drinks WHILE gaming, it's bound to happen eventually.
Thanks for the advice. The day I ordered it I picked up the Coolermaster Notepal U3, Razer bluetooth mouse, 50' HDMI cable, and Apple bluetooth keyboard (projector gaming goodness) -
Ahhhhhhhhh.... guess I kinda brought this thread back from the semi-dead, lol. I was thinking of making a new thread called, "Waiting on the Envy 17 3D A Second Time"
for those of us who returned their orginal 1st order of their Envy 17 3D for defects and other various reasons..... So anyone getting their 2nd time around Envy's soon and hopefully for the last time?
Mine ships out on January 13, hopefully I will have her by January 15 if all goes as planned. Believe it or not, the more I think about it, the more I'm optimistic that I will really enjoy this laptop this next round up.... 90% sure she's a keeper unless serious defects are shown.... I'm basing it on sexy styling, great features, and longevity, yes, eventhough Sandy Bridge is coming out soon, I will keep her for 3 to 4 years and then upgrade once the even better chips of 22nm will be in production! Woot! Here is to the future.
KJ -
ya this thread has kinda been quiet lately. Dunno why.
Still waiting on mine to ship, Dec 21st. -
Tracking provided upon shipment.

It looks way worst in person, believe me, I later discover a bright blue dead pixel during the boot sequence, I didn't check for the popular warps around the power button or somewhere else.Attached Files:

Beautiful unboxing, right guys... Thanks to FEDEX, nice job -
Hopefully you share the sense oh humor, because I know you sure have one. I do hope all is perfect with your next Envy that you love it so much, you'll keep it. Ha, and no, I don't work for HP...hell if I did, I'd expect a free Envy 17 3D
KJ -
btw, where is everybody's "unboxing-boxing" pictures? -
I really need the laptop over the holidays, its perfect for playing videos or sport games for the family on a external tv, my old dv6t dont have hdmi so... -
-
I don't think driver updates will work if the limitation is on the video card itself (meaning the hardware). I hope I'm wrong, but we'll see...
KJ -
video card won't pump out the necessary refresh rate of 120hz. it probably could if ati was willing to accomodate and create drviers (a la ps3 upate enabled a 1.3 hdmi capable ps3 to pump out 3d) but doubt they will.
-
If that is so, that is another reason to keep the Envy 17 3D....and to start bugging the crap out of HP until they do update this driver...
I had the impression the hardware itself was the limiting factor....we need more info now...
KJ -
actually i'm sure the Envy 17 could pump out 3d, but only if ATI came out with an update for it. Again, the older PS3 systems use HDMI 1.3, and can still do 120hz output for gaming (they use ATI GPU by the way). Its true that HDMI 1.3 has a slower connection speed than 1.4, but as with the older PS3 if ATI really wanted to they could reduce the audio quality output of the HDMI connection to make room for 120hz compatibility. So yeah, in theory, its possible. AMD won't do it though. won't happen. don't expect to use this notebook for 3d gaming/movies beyond the screen. enjoy the amazing 17.3" super screen anyway.
-
having trouble getting a couple games to play in 3d mode, transformers WFC, and Bad Company 2... anyone else had luck? running the newest 10.12 catalyst drivers (released this month). well i can get them to play with iz3d just fine. guess i may have to splurge and actually pay for some software again.
-
see my comments in the 17 owners lounge, i was able to get 3d output to work using iz3d video driver and side by side mode, works fine even with 60hz output. envy can do this, heck, pretty sure any notebook with a compatible gpu for iz3d can do this. not as good as 120hz stereoscopic mode (you do lose resolution using side by side mode), but still nifty. other caveat is that your 3d tv has side by side 3d mode available as an option.

Ok guys, just got me laptop. My delievery date was Dec 21st but it came in early. 4 days, early, not bad! As anxious as I was to get this thing I couldnt help but feel very nervous because I was afraid of what I'd find in terms of defects.... I open it up and check her out thoroughly. Holy hell, a PERFECT unit. No warping anywhere, no wobbling, no dents, no dead pixels, no anything! Im extatic. Im thinking that HP corrected those things with so many complaints from people. This thing is a beauty! I tried the 3D demos and they look sick. The NBA one is rediculous. I see alot of people complaining about ghosting and this and that with the 3D, but I'll cross that bridge when i get to it. The screen is unreal. Im so glad I went with this for the screen alone. Ive had it on about an hour now. Played a Blu-Ray, surfed the net, etc, and I cant even say its "hot" but very warm. So the heat isnt a problem, at least so far. Anyway thats my quick take. All is well here!

also been playing with dvdfab, can copy my 3d blu rays into .mkv and store them on my hard drive...
-
johnnobts, you are brilliant! ahah, thanks so much. This program will be so helpful since
1. The Envy 17 3D has no Bluray burner, so we can't burn our own blurays, and so saving them on the HD is awesome, and free, lol.
2. Even if we did have a Bluray burner, you guys realize that a blank Bluray disk costs insane amounts of money, that you are better off just buying the actual 3D movie! lol
I Googled it, here is the link... I will check it out and see if I can get my hands on it, thanks again.

free demo works well. new fujifilm 3d w3 camera/camcorder here also. looks great with the envy.

I use AnyDVD HD from SlySoft.com to make an unprotected ISO from a bluray disc. Then, I use the Virtual CloneDrive to mount the ISO on my home media PC for playback with TotalMedia 5.

yes the envy will do 3d in 1080p but you will need to dial down the graphics settings in many games if you want to play at 1080p or go down to 720p. i can run mass effect 2 at 1080p with high settings, but only get 19-26fps. using 720p with high settings i get 35-40fps. 720p looks fine to me.
-
@720P you can still put it into 3D mode? You don't have to be in 1080P then to play 3D? If you can play it in 720 3D I'd be happy with that too, especially with the higher frame rates.
