Joe, I don't even have a "Low Definition" :D camera, but I can send print-screens and write anything else about the laptop.... don't worry, i'm a computer geek too.

and talking about cameras, my next cellphone must have:

-4.3" to 4.5" AMOLED (or Super AMOLED)
    -8mp sensor, auto-focus, Double LED flash, 1080p @ 24fps video recording/playback
    -wifi n + bluetooth + GPS.
    -Either Android 2.3+ or WP7.2

Sitting in the airport coming back home from seeing the family on Thanksgiving...just checked my email. Mine was delivered today! :D I live in a apt so they gave it to my building manager. Don't know if I'll have the energy to look at it tonight since I'm getting home around midnight (plane delay :( ) but will definitely unbox tomorrow! So excited...

Cool, looking good for waiting then. But for those who have got their 3d, please post more opinions if you'd be so kind. I'll listen in a few more days before I make my final decision of waiting or not.

WoW I thought delivery date is Thursday, but when I checked this morning it says OUT FOR DELIVERY from a town just 30min away from mine, woot!. I guess HP did upgrade the shipping once a delay is issued.

Yeah mine is out for delivery too. That was a really fast trip as soon as it cleared US customs. It might just be that way for international shipping since they know that customs can delay it for up to a few days.

I can't be at home to receive it but I left that pre-signature form on my door and told them to leave it on the back doorstep. I'll probably go home early today to make sure it doesn't stay on the doorstep for too long. I can't wait!

does anyone know if that "autodetect" that detects that you have an envy 17 3d and allows you to get the software still works even if you do a clean windows install?

I don't see why not. Even when you do a clean install, you are still going to reinstall all the proper drivers back from the OS DVDs....get the Tridef and then unstill any programs you don't want.... That's what I would do, maybe unpilot can chime in and help. ;)

just unboxed it, made backup disk image, and when I went to install my SSD I found (I should have expected this) that they omitted the mounting brackets and sata cabling to connect up the 2nd hard drive. Anybody know where I can get that stuff?

For now I'm, going with the included drive as the SSD is too small (64GB) to do the job on its own.

Initial impressions are good. No wobble, seems solid, everything looks great. It does have a super hot area in the upper left but checking the temps it is in the 60's C in all cores (idle) with no particular effort to vent it. There is nearly no space under it for air flow with the stock battery. more to come...

I thought it was rather obvious, lol. More storage of course! :D Honestly, what I really need is someone to explain to me why would I want to invest in an SSD drive which are first of all, usually on the small side of storage, and much more expensive the the usual HDs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but what I hear about SSDs are that they are great for starting up/booting up windows, applications, and so forth... but once the program is executed and working, the SSD drive does little in terms of much performance difference right? For example, if I were to open up Crysis say one one an HD and one on an SSD ....so the SSD will open Crysis first, but as to game play, won't both drives play Crysis in the same manner, or if there is a performance difference I would guess it won't be noticeable... CPU power and GPU would be most involved in the running of a game like Crysis, rather than the small part the SSD would play right? Thanks.

By the way, I ordered my Envy 17 3D with the 640gb HD @ 7200rpm. I intend to install a 1Tetrabyte HD in the second slot once they become cheaper....I doubt a 1T SSD drive will be availble and cheap anytime soon, lol.

why not just fill out the "pre-sign" paper and leave it on your door. You can get the fedex dude to just leave it at the door or back door or designated neighbor. If you only missed it by 5 mins then if you do the same again it would only be outside for a small amount of time. Just don't post your address on this forum :)

hi can i ask for help? im customizing a laptop that has these specs..
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Quad Core processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L3 Cache) with Turbo Boost up to 2.8 GHz
Graphics card 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics [HDMI, VGA] - For Quad Core Processors
    Memory 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
Hard drive Upgrade to 750GB 5200RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart
Primary battery 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery (standard) - Up to 5.0 hours of battery life +++
    Display 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Infinity Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
Primary optical drive Blu-ray player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner
Personalization HP TrueVision Webcam and Fingerprint Reader [For BrightView Infinity Display]
Networking Intel Wireless-N Card with Bluetooth
    Standard Keyboard

However im faced with a dilemma if the graphic card i chose is dedicated or not. it has these options: 1G ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 graphics [HDMI, VGA] for quad cores or 1G ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5650 switchable graphics [HDMI, VGA] for dual cores. Are both dedicated graphic cards?

    Many thanks....

Yes both are dedicated cards. However, what you have configured looks like a dv7t Select Edition, rather than an Envy 17 3D. You'll want this forum: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/268054-official-hp-dv7t-owners-lounge-261.html
Or you can check out the dv6tse forum which is more active. The dv7tse and dv6tse are pretty much the same other than small things like size, screen size, resolution, the option for a backlit keyboard, and wether it comes with a numerical keypad or not. They should be able to help with most issues you may have. Heres the thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/492831-official-hp-dv6t-select-edition-owners-lounge-442.html

I was doing a little more googling about our 3D laptops... was curious about our graphics since many of us will be gaming, and stuff! HAHAHAH, don't you even dare deny it! :p Anyway, here is what I found....

    from HP's own site...
"1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics [HDMI]
Get an incredibly immersive HD gaming experience with the power of desktop graphics 'supercomputing' for mind-blowing performance without compromise. 1GB of ultra-high band GDDR5 memory offers the highest level of VRAM performance available in a GPU. Full DirectX(R) 11 support enables intense gaming performance and unrivalled image quality with stunning 3D visual effects, realistic lighting, and lifelike imagery." :D  :D Awesome!!! I do hope its right, that its GDDR5 because I read this article here......

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5850.23069.0.html

and here is the most relevant piece to us.... " The 3D performance of the Mobility HD 5850 depends heavily on the used graphics ram. As long as fast GDDR5 is used, the performance should be between a GeForce GTX 260M - 280M in the high end segment. Therefore, all current games (2009) should be playable in high details with high resolutions. With DDR3 memory the performance should drop noticeably because of the 128 Bit wide memory bus. Which games run fluently and detailled benchmarks can be found on the lower section of this page (permanently maintained). In the 3DMark Vantage tests, the impact of DDR3 versus GDDR5 can be seen. The GDDR5 version (on par with a GTX 285M) is about 40% faster in this benchmark than the DDR3 equipped version (on par with a GTX 260M)."

So, if HP is honest, they claim to use the highest GDDR5 in their build of the Envy 17 3D for amazing performance of gaming. True, though we all know that it is a bit underclocked, but still, I'm going nuts...I get my baby on Dec. 7th....soon...

You just put a :) on my face. Thanks. You do realize from AMD's site that means we can use DX11 with the new Tesselation!!!! You really should check out the Tessilation vids on youtube, amazing. I think one of the new DX11 games is Battlefield Bad Company 2, one of the few new games to Support DX11!!!
Edit: BBC2 I just found out does not use Tessellation, just the power of DX11.Alien vs. Predator does use Tessellation.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP8hQ1m9IbY
Check out just this one vid..amazing...I have to get this game, now! haha

Jose, I'm sorry to hear and see... :( Is it just one hindge that is bent up? It wasn't all too clear from the pics...
Also, do you mean return for another, (exchange) or you just don't want any Envy 17 3D?

that sucks. Is it just cosmetic damage or does it affect operation in some way? If you don't mind it too much it might be easier to just ask for a partial refund or offer that option to HP as an alternative to taking it back and fixing it. I did that when a washing machine I bought was missing a screw and rather than take the trouble of fixing it themselves, they gave me $150 to replace the screw myself.

WickedYeti, that is a really brilliant idea!!! If that was my unit I would def call HP and ask for some $$$$ I would not be happy with anything less than $300 or more credit back, otherwise I'd ask for an exchange.

Checked Fedex today....My comp arrived in Alaska this morning!!! So close....so close...

OMG, seeing Jose's situation makes me nervous. What kind of quality control does HP have that let a laptop go out like that? I hate that its made overseas.

frankie, do you think maybe it got damaged in shipping instead of in the factory? I would llike to believe it was throughly inspected before put into that nice, rich looking velvet black bag.... They put so much into aesthetics of this unit, I find it very hard to believe that the inspector saw that damage in sent it to Jose anyway... Although I find it hard to believe it would get damaged in shippment either the way they pack it so nicely....oh boy...

Everyone who gets their Envy 17 3D make sure to go over it with a fine tooth comb when it first arrives. Open it very carefully... examine every inch, every crevice. Use the January 15 deadline to decide if you are happy with it. I will be sure to do this...
