Calling the foreign (we all know where they really are) call center will work for the 10% only if you have not used a prior coupon code or else you'll get all kinds of bull runaround. They simply do not have the authority to authorize a major discount when the customer already has one. The best you can get from them is maybe $50-$100 in that situation.
I got the 10% off for delay despite using the $400 coupon by using the email address cto-esc.hpshopping2 (at) hp (dot) com
I got this address by asking the call center people what email address they use to escalate inquiries up a level because I wanted to deal with the next level myself. As some have noted, this is the same reply-to email address that comes with the delay notification. If I had noted this earlier, it would have saved me a lot of trouble.

But MBP just appears to be a rip off to me. It use one generation older cpu, gpu, ram, and even storage to set the base for the "magical" long battery time. I'd wait for the 3d to come and see if its worth it before canceling, shouldnt wait this long for nothing. -

Great explanation Yeti. Just sent them an email also.

Phone Order 11/03/2010, 08:27:24 PDT
Original ship date 11/17, now 12/2
Mine is the bone stock one (6GB, 720qm, 500GB HD, etc.) with no add-ons. No idea of the rhyme or reason of the delay... -
I just checked order status page and was shocked to see status "shipped" with tracking number (I have gotten no email with ship confirmation) but was disappointed to see that what had shipped was the extra AC adapter I ordered yesterday. The ac adapter will have taken 2 days from order to delivery. probably around 1/15th the time the laptop will take from start to finish...
I looked around the HP store for something I might spend that 15% off coupon on and I found this:
HP 90W Smart AC/Auto/Air Combo Adapter | HP® Official Store
I tried to stack the 15% off with the existing discount and it DID stack but I found a $25 off $125+ coupon with a quick google search which works due to the original price of the item (oversight on their part) and you end up with it for like $78 after tax.
If you're wary of the negative reviews, don't be. The people that wrote them are idiots that didn't understand how the product was supposed to work. I plan on using it as my primary AC adapter since it doesn't charge the battery by default. If you're familiar with lithium ion technology you'll know that keeping a battery at full charge at a high temperature (as is the case with the always-on-charge-mode chargers) it will lose a high % of its life every year. Being able to keep a partially charged battery in the laptop prolongs its life and I don't have to go through the trouble of pulling the battery if I'm gonna have it on AC power for a while.
FYI: How to prolong lithium-based batteries
I didn't start this post trying to plug HP products but I guarantee you won't have any hassle with this and I figured some of you would want to find ways of prolonging the life of the battery on this thing which honestly doesn't last all that long to begin with. Also, the stacked discounts make me feel like I'm jabbing HP a little bit -
Will you get full power out of that?
HP sent me the 65 watt travel size adapter and it says outside of the box that in order to get full performance you will need to use a more powerful adapter.
I know that the 17" requires a 120watt for full power, so I'm wondering if 90 watts will be enough, because the slim power adapter is one SEXY product. I'm holding it in my hands right now.......but if it degrades performance....... -
They do claim compatibility with the envy 17 but I would guess it works a lot like phone chargers with diff capacities. I guess it's possible that 90W won't be enough to game with max settings AND charge it at the same time but it should be able to do one or the other just fine.
I still think there's a decent chance that it can run AND charge the battery at once but it may do so a lot slower than the stock 120W supply it comes with. I personally will be keeping the battery at around 40% charge just to cover power glitches or when i move it to another room and only fill it to 100% when I am going to travel.
This review for the envy 17 has a power consumption chart that lists peak load power around 90W and idle power around 30W. If you aren't running it at peak load then it should have plenty of juice to spare and still charge. I don't think the travel adapter is going to get you through any long gaming sessions...

Also, the package comes with 2 little red capsule things. They look gold metal with red plastic surrounding it. I called HP to let me know what they were, after 4 times, I finally got someone who told me they are fuses. Fine, so how do I replace the fuses then if I have to? The little flyer has nothing about the fuses or how to replace them, since the charger unit has no screws that I could see. Funny thing is, one of the HP reps told me it could be a wrong item they put in my box, lol, that's before another one said they are fuses. oh boy, HP, gotta love you. Sheeesh.Oh, and the bar code on the charger is not the serial number? They asked me for the serial, and it wasn't it. I told them please ship me a new AC/Air/Car adapter that is new with a serial number, thanks very much. I should get it today.
P.S. By the way, I get my Envy 3D shipped on 12/2....so right now I was using this amazing charger for the HP Pavilion dv7-4083cl which I bought from Costco....and will be going back to Costco once I get my HP Envy 3D! LOL
KJ -
Hmm, thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to look closely at it to see if it really works the way they claim. It would kinda defeat the purpose if it was really doing that...
Edit: so I retract my prior statement that the ac adapter order would not be a hassle -
WickedYeti, let us know how you fare with your charger. Thanks.
KJ -
I would have thought they'd build a sort of hysteresis into it that would not allow charging between a range of voltages but i guess if there was no such thing then any voltage above the battery supply would cause it to trickle charge. Not enough data I guess, though for $78 I guess I wouldn't mind terribly so long as it was still a good car/plane/rv power supply.
I'll report back about the charger but as it stands I'll have the charger tomorrow but no laptop for another week or so... -
Mine is on vehicle for delivery today even though tracking still says it will be here by tomorrow morning. We had a nasty snow storm here yesterday though, so I'm not holding my breath it making it here today assuming FedEx has plenty of backlogged shipments due to the weather.
-
WickedYeti I have created a new thread for those interested in the HP 90W Auto/Air/AC Smart-pin Adapter so we won't have to take over this waiting thread.Hope to see you and everyone else regarding this item there. Oh, I received my replacement today and ran some tests! Results are up in the thread, here is the link.

sigh.... waiting for the 29th for my envy to ship i guess. if the shipping date gets pushed back once more i will have words with me customer service rep.

Btw I emailed that email address Yeti posted up. Got my 10% refunded.
Everyone who's 3D got delayed should email them - you can't lose.
Also writing a full, coherent email helps. Not a sentence. -

Hey guys,
In a couple of weeks (Jan-Feb) Intel Sandy Bridge will be out, according to Engadget, HP is planning to start selling "...an update to HP's gaming laptop???, which includes the 2GHz quad-core CPU as the star of its show". Laptoping has also been snooping around and found listings at online retailers for laptops from Gateway and Lenovo also offering the still unannounced part.
Engadget also says: "...but it's reassuring to see vendors looking eager and ready so far in advance of the launch date -- it should mean no shortage of choice when Paul Otellini finally steps to the stage and makes things officially official. "
It seems that our HP Envy 17 3D will be almost obsolete by Jan-Feb 2011 with HP dv7 with better batteries, with much less heat, cheaper and FASTER.
I am really thinking returning my Envy 17 3D before the 21 days required if this is true.... what do you guys think about it? -
either way cnet report say intel has shipped the new CPU to companies already, and the show is on jan5. For people who bought the laptop after Nov1, we have till jan 15 to return for free. By then there should be a better look at the new cpu's ability. -
Sandy Bridge (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intel's Sandy Bridge Architecture Exposed - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

from CNet - Should you wait for Intel's Sandy Bridge laptops?
...maybe the new laptop will not be cheaper, but for sure will be faster, cooler and more battery efficient, which is what I want from a laptop for professional services. -

I just found this, seems the price is not bad at all, although they might be for desktops
Anyways, I'd like to see how the SB work with a discrete GPU before making up my mind about getting one. Because game is the only thing I do normally on my computer that need cpu and gpu power. Other stuffs like browsing and word processing can be done fine on any computer nowadays pretty much. -
check this link out guys.
Sandy Bridge And Blu-ray : Intel Developer Forum, Day Two
Let me quote this interesting piece here... "Note that the entire focus of this effort is on 3D stereoscopic video playback. It’s very unlikely that Sandy Bridge will offer enough 3D horsepower to render 3D games stereoscopically, so Nvidia’s 3D Vision is still safe for the time being--at least when it comes to gaming."
So what do you peepz think?
There is more in this discussion about Northern Islands, Southern Islands, lol its like I'm thinking about cruise ships...haha, anyway... all I figure all this new tec h is going to take time to sort out and be tweaked to its optimum level. Even us that already ordered the new 3D....its still new...so I figure I'll live with with for the next 3 to 4 years. Think about it... you do realize in another 4 years there will be some new tech, even earlier perhaps that we can try out. I for one, will be very happy with my Envy 17 3D if it performs as good as its supposed to. Next laptop should be in 4 or so years with new amazing tech.
Sure, you can wait around a few more months for another comp...but so what? What we already have learend as computer fans is that tech is always getting better no matter what you buy. So enjoy this amazing laptop...and wait a few years for the next really big thing. I figure our Envy 3Ds will hold on for a good few...so anyway, enough of my rambleing....

And talking about Sandy Bridge, is this the updated Envy with SB listed in Amazon?
HP Envy 17-1190NR -
-
Naw, looks like its the regular one with 2x500 gig HDs and the 1080P resolutions screen. Seems these comapanies are giving you diff specs on the same laptop, here... HP Envy 17-1190NR - Core i7 720QM 1.6 GHz - 17.3" TFT - Notebook Computers - XH048UA#ABA - CDW.com
From previous articles the SB won't be availble till Jan 5 from what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong.
Here is a quote from another thread, "The Tock for 22nm is called Haswell, it too will be a new architecture and is expected around Nov 2012." Sandy Bridge, worth waiting for? - AnandTech Forums
So it looks like just a year after the Sandy Bridge @ 32nm, we will have the Haswell running @ 22nm...so it makes sense to stick with our Envy 17 3D for a bit, unless you want to wait over a year to upgrade to something more significant. I intend to enjoy the E17-3D now, and wait a few years like I said until the "next big jump" in tech has taken root, has been refined/bugs fixed, and is cheaper.
KJ -
But like you said let's enjoy a little bit this Envy 17 3D... until Jan 15 2011? (are you sure? where did you get that information? isn't 21 days the limit to return the laptop?) -
-
KJ -
-
I'd love to see the Envy with an integrated GPU. If Sandy Bridge brings this, it would be a nice improvement in regards to high temperatures and poor battery life.
-
I know it's in spanish, but it shows a bit of 3d video playing on it. *shrugs*
YouTube - Portátil 3D HP Envy de 17 pulgadas -
Ok, enough about the SB, plenty of discussion in The Lounge and/or other forums lol
So is anyone else stuck with the Shipping Exception in Shanghai? Estimated delivery date is 12/2. -
-
"Delivered" would be sweet lol
-
Mine is in "transit", delivered date 12/2 (that's this Thursday
) (fingers crossed)
I will not waste time doing clean install, instead I will be exploring all the features, checking the temperatures and wobbles, 3D, etc... anyway I will return it for a SB edition.... -
Here is the link to my thread regarding this. I would most appreciate it, and anyone else able to post you'd be the best, thanks!

KJ -
Mine is still in transit, but did get my $100 refund today.
-
yea me too, got mine 10% discount today as in 130$.
Dont think I'll return it unless it has any quality issues, I dont think I can get away with a better deal any time soon. total 530$ discount off original.
Anyway the product is in Alaska now, lol.
Hope they are not saving shipping fee and let people drive from Alaska to Canada and then across America to the other end. -
Yeah I got around that much discount too and for the price I'll def keep it. Though if I had paid full retail I probably would return it if something better (and yet comparatively priced) was coming out in a couple months.
Waiting on Envy 17 3D thread...
