Any pre 16th cancellations? Worried, this is so disappointing. The compelling offers suck, only ssd would make me consider not dropping envy 14 w/o radiance.
-
Didnt get one yet but if I do it's SSD or FOAD.
For the graphics designer doesn't the Elite come with a better screen anyway? ColorIPS or some such $500 option. -
-
Just as a side note, HP is starting to ship out their Pavilion dv series laptops with the new Sandy Bridge i7 quad-core CPUs with switchable graphics. It's not so far fetched as to configure a dv6t Quad Edition series 15.4" laptop and see if HP will match the cost you paid for your Envy.

Lets keep track of this thing. When did every one orders their's and what is the status?
Ordered: 1/15/2011 3:47 PM EST
Status: In Production
Estimated Ship: Feb. 1
Radiance? Yes -
Status: in production
Estimated ship: feb 2
Radiance ?: yes
Build: in signature -
I mean, I think everyone whose order hasn't been cancelled is currently "in production," way more useful for the people whose orders HAVE been cancelled to post their stats.
-
I agree, everyone who had their order canceled had their order in "processing" or "being verified", so once HP puts it into production I guess it's safe to assume that they've checked to make sure they have the necessary parts for that order.
I think the way it works is that once the order has completed processing, The system shows that it has 1 less radiance display. So you're not guaranteed your order until it's in production. That could explain the mistake by HP because some orders take longer to process than others, so you could take someone elses radiance display if your order processes quicker
Just my guess on how it works -
-
oh I see..ignore all that I just said then lol

Ordered: 1/17/2011 2:44 PM EST
Status: In Production
Estimated Ship: Feb. 2
Radiance? Yes -
I received a confirmation email within an hour of placing my order online, but I have not received any calls. Those that have received confirmation calls, where they calling to confirm or to clarify something (such as billing info)? I know that sometimes, certain credit card companies require a little extra verification when you start spending over a certain amount... -
I'm just going to put this out there, but it doesn't really make sense that they'd be cancelling by date.
They gave this offer not to liquidate their radiance displays but older hardware.
Without going too much into the explanation, there's a much greater demand for the displays than there is supply (shortage) therefore it makes the most sense for the seller to maximize their gain from the sales of the available displays.
If it's a high demand product, why would they provide it to someone they're only going to make $150 (low profit margin) off their order when they can just as easily fill one that they're making $350 (high profit margin) off of? If they can only fill 1,000 orders, it'd make a lot more sense (as a business) to make a profit of $350,000 instead of $150,000 from those 1,000 sales.
This is why I asked a cancelled member what their specs were. This seems to me to be their approach because otherwise they'd be sending a mass message saying "sorry, but orders processed after [insert date] will not be filled due to depleted stock."
I'll put my specs down and we'll see if this holds true:
i5-580m
8gb DDR3
640gb 7200rpm HDD
Radiance display
plus 2-day shipping
I overpaid for my ram, hard drive and shipping which are items with the highest mark up usually for HP. It would make sense to me they would want to fill my order because of the excessive mark up I'm willingly paying, but we'll see... -

i think we should also be asking if its been just the i5 that have been getting canceled or are the i7 getting the axe as well.

This would not be illegal because they are not changing the price they have already set with the consumer. They aren't extorting customers for any more money and they didn't take bids on the screens. They took too many orders to fill and now must figure out a way to effectively fill the orders they can. This isn't against the law, just poor inventory management.
As a consumer, you say it's unfair and should be illegal for them to fill the orders based on some other measure than time. If you were HP, you'd argue it's unfair and illegal that you have to honor orders in which you're making little to no profit on.
Since there is a shortage, there's going to be either consumer and/or producer welfare loss. HP is going to minimize their welfare loss by making the most profit while consumers can have no change in welfare because there's only the set number of units and everyone has been locked in at the same $200 upgrade price.
From an economics standpoint, everyone suffers a welfare loss if they fail to implement a priority system based on profit margins. -
Even though I understand your point on a business basis, there are other factors in play.
Canceling/modifying orders based on the time they were taken is what most consumers think is fair. I doubt HP will risk alienating a whole lot of customers by giving preferential treatment to higher paying ones.
Let's see what happens, time will tell. -

DAMN! Just got the cancellation email. Strange thig is it doesn't say why it was cancelled, if I were not reading this thread I would have no idea why. It would at least be nice if HP explained the reason for the cancellation.
Oh well, I was kinda looking forward to getting it. -
My order just got cancelled (via email). Ordered Sunday ~10am, i5-580m, Radiance, 640gb with 2-day shipping. Had been listed as in production just before it got canceled. Oh well, disappointed, but it's fate saying pay the extra (lot's of extra) money for an MBP instead. $1000 was too good to be true, I guess.
-
Regardless of the legality, if we were able to establish that HP was prioritizing orders based on build cost, I'd probably gather up this evidence (in the form of a poll) and forward a writeup to Consumerist and other consumer blogs that might be able to get an answer out of them.
*shrug* Worth a try. -
-
i5 580
640 7200HD
Radiance display. -
Argghhhh!!!! My order just got cancelled too. I was hoping not to be on this "blacklist"...but I am too a victim of this HP scam. I ordered on Jan 16th at 2:00pm central time. Now I will have to wait for the refresh...this sucks that they don't offer any type of coupons or compensation for the next purchase since they screwed up.
-
-
It looks like these are being canceled primarily based on time ordered...
Its slowly creeping its way back from Tuesday. Makes me super nervous. This is definitely not an OK business move on HP's part. I already sent in my previous Envy 14, and if this gets canceled I will likely take my business elsewhere. -
Otherwise, I may settle for an SSD or just go somewhere else. Lenevo has some decently priced 14" sandy bridges but with small battery and average screen. -
Cancelled
. No explanation in email. I'm furious. I was on the phone for 4 hours with india to exchange my newly purchased defective unit. Now I have nothing.
I ordered on the phone at 4pm 1/15 -

just got mine in
so very disapointed... well i guess hp isnt going to get any money from me.. i think ill be going for a refubished xps 14 and swapping out the screen for 80 bucks lol.
btw i ordered sat night... so non of you are safe... i think it looks as though most of us are gonna get screwed
PS i7 system -
I just put a call in to HP customer service, they have assured me that my order is in production and cannot be canceled. I'm not sure if that is really the case, though.
Ordered Jan 16, ~11pm est.
Only changes made:
Radiance Display
i5-580 -
I'm just throwing this out there, at least in the District of Columbia it's illegal for a company to:
(h) advertise or offer goods or services without the intent to sell them or without the intent to sell them as advertised or offered;
(i) advertise or offer goods or services without supplying reasonably expected public demand, unless the advertisement or offer discloses a limitation of quantity or other qualifying condition which has no tendency to mislead;
Take that as you will. I realize HP's TOS says they can cancel a order at ANY TIME but their TOS doesn't supercede your state law. Again, if you want to take it that far.
My guess is a judge would be sympathetic to someone who ordered a product, had their card charged, waited a week, and then had their order cancelled. *shrug* -
Got my cancellation email this morning. CSR I talked to claimed everyone's envy 14 was getting canceled. She took my number and said they'd call tomorrow to ask if I wanted to place an order for the same laptop. I don't understand how or why they'd cancel everyone's order and then have the ability to reinstate those orders 24hrs later. So, I am extremely skeptical of getting a call.
Whatevs. If they don't call, I'll just order a Dell XPS. -
These cancellations seem extremely sporadic... I wonder if they are just slow to get the e-mail out to everyone and really have the intention of canceling the majority of the orders... I couldn't imagine that anyone who order after the 15th have any chance of getting one if people who ordered before this are getting canceled unless they are making particular exceptions..
-
Order jan 18, 2010 around 1pm. i5, lowest model but got the slice battery and radiance for a total of $980 and ground shipping.
Either the ones that ordered early are getting the cancellation notices FIRST, or mine went through it is completely random.
Ordered mine via phone and customer service rep and using billmelater.
seeing as how mine hasnt been cancelled YET, the theory that they might pick and choose the ones that would give them more profit probably wouldnt hold. also, a big corporation like that, itd be chump change to pull a disastrous move like that on a few orders during a special coupon sale.
My theory is that everyone's will get cancelled including mine but they are distributed to the customer service reps randomly, hence the cancellation notices coming in randomly regardless of ordering date. THAT, or the production doesn't strictly depend on who ordered first but that's random and being sent to different warehouses and production centers all around the world and those that got sent to "x" production in Y country got cancelled because "x" production overestimated their inventory and now cant fulfill their manufacturing estimate. -
-
I ordered at 10:00 AM EST on Sunday. Still no cancellation, but they seem to be popping up faster now.

My order got cancelled, HP sucks -
Well, me being the paranoid, impatient person I am called customer service and I was assured and guaranteed by a CSR that my order would not be cancelled... Although I am not sure that makes me feel that much better because the lack of knowledge of the CSR staff is probably extremely high, but at least it hasn't been cancelled yet I suppose :/
-
they just cancelled my order!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it. This is non-sense. It's my last HP computer ever!
I ordered on 01/15/11. -
I'm on the phone with them, they have said that they ran out of 5650s or something about that. They said they will recharge if it is ok with me to do that...also I think I lost the 1600*900 radiance screen >_>
-
I'm on the phone as well, they told me that they are cancelling MOST of the orders because they display provider gave them faulty displays...
-
hm.. is mine really being built and shipped?? omgomogm...
lol wheres my letter damnit. at this point i just want a clear answer. -
-
So glad I sold my other computer on eBay earlier this week and looked forward to my new laptop for a whole week........ Only to be denied, I even called a CSR last night and got promised it would ship. Got the cancellation email, no phone call, no sorry, no future discount, no even opportunity to keep the bv screen, I don't understand. My only thought is that hp was doing an incredibly unethical test for future envy 14 releases. Will people buy more envy 14 with a screen worthy of the pricetag? Obviously yes, and now their marketing department has 3000 cancelled radiance order emails to back them up. Good luck and hopefully the remaining out there are one of the lucky 400, if that was even factually correct.... hp
-
I was about the first 100 ppl to place the order.
GG, HP -
-
Make sure to send your cancellation emails to blogs like Engadget or Gizmodo. Gotta make HP pay publicly for this BS.
Was your HP Envy 14 with Radiance display order cancelled? Post here!
