And the advantage of doing so there instead of here, is what?![]()

Hi,
First of all I also would like to join the line of ppl thanking you for these excellent posts. Was very helpful!
The only thing I couldn't work out is the Volume buttons. It's not that they are slow, but they don't work or if they do graphics is messed up. When below you say "installing mediasmart from the HP driver and software page, and then installing the mediasmart update" can you please send two link showing the first mediasmart and then the update you are referring to? I only found one mediasmart menu file in the HP HDX 18 1200EO Windows 7 64 bit download section, I don't see a separate update as well.

Can you please advise?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Regards,
Dundy

Anyone is welcome to do there as well translates into "There" verses "Here"?
I quote NBR over "THERE!" all the time.. of course it is minus the telemundo drama you have offered up.. I will go as far to say I have quoted YOU LanCorp over "THERE!" about the quality of your Smasung SSD..
So... ummmmmmm?
Yeah.. I will take that zero rating.. I might add all of these bugs with w-7 could be considered proof of a Buggy operating system in some cultures.
Maybe not in Drama land where yous seem to be visiting today.. but in other reality based locals..
Windows 7 is BUGGY!
Posting here or there for the benefit of all?
It is the dell heater you own that has warped your thought process.
Sincerely, JW -
Greetings everyone. I have been out on the lamb as I've been deployed to Iraq. Hello Lancorp. It’s been a long time.
Anyhoo, one of the things I have noticed is the new Pavilion DV8T has very similar hardware to the HDX 18. Can anyone get access to a DV8T Win 7 recovery disk to see if this will work on the HDX 18?
If this option were to work then you should get full system functionality as the image would have all the drivers.
On a related note there is a chance it won’t boot but there still is an opportunity to get it working from the DV8T recovery disk. For this option you would also need a Win 7 install disk and a valid install windows 7 key.
The following is a rudimentary way of how to do this.
1. Install image. If it doesn’t boot then…
2. Place Win 7 disk. Conduct a repair install. This will install the missing drivers the image does not have.
3. At some point during the reinstallation you may have to activate using your Win 7 key. Do so.
4. Reboot and you should have a fully operating system with all drivers and HP software
I figured how to do this at work on corporate workstations when using an XP image meant for a Dell D830 and then installing it onto an older edition computer (Dell D800/810).
If anyone can get access to one of these disks I’m willing to test it out and do a write up for the community.
Challenges I can see.
This may not be 100% accurate so if you have something that clarifies the following let me know…
1. OEM HP Windows install validation. From what I remember the BIOS has something to do with this. This is how an OEM image recovery disk doesn’t need to conduct a validation when you do an image install. The HDX 18 OEM BIOS may be looking for a Vista install and will require a Win 7 activation key. -
It's just hard to swift through one huge thread sometimes.
That's why that site exists. There are more than 7,000 posts in the HDX18 thread and a ton in the HDX16 thread. A lot of the same questions being asked again and again....
-
It was not "buggy" for me, and it's working great. Fast, smooth, no issues, no problems. I now have a very fast smokin' HDX 18 with W7 Ultimate and haven't seen a "bug" yet.
What bugs have you seen? Are you even using W7?
-
I a using the 10 pages of this thread.. as well as..
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=windows+7+buggy&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g-m1
Results 1 - 10 of about 3,170,000 for windows 7 buggy. (0.20 seconds)
as my bench mark for the statement..
But I could be wrong.. and the 3 million posts for windows 7 buggy as well...
As on the HDX thread.. please.. do a how too.. maybe you can help me and others get thru the transition early.
Be well, JW -
Aside from finding the drivers for my PC (which was a hassle only cuz the hardware components were very vague) I haven't had any issues with Windows 7.
I don't know where you basing all this "buggy" claims you're throwing around but honestly I think you're kinda over exaggerating it.
lancorp is an intelligent guy and while he may say things that are over the head once in a while I've come to realize that his heart and intentions are in the right place. -
What am I basing my assumptions on?
Did you see the 3 million repsonses in google?
I have quoted LanCorp on more than one occasion.. as noted.. LanCorp has been a great source of information for myself, personaly..
But what does one have to do with the other?
Be well, JW -
Hey JW,
That Google search you linked, did you look at the dates on the results? Most of those links go back to Jan 2009, when the beta's came out. Of course it was buggy back then!
Fear not! It's not bad. It's not hard to do.
If you are seriously thinking about upgrading, first you have to decide:
1) Do I want to upgrade my Vista?
2) Do I want to do a clean install?
Choice '1' is straight forward. Put in the Upgrade DVD and away you go.
Choice '2' you do as follows:
A1) Backup your C: drive because you are about to format it.
A2) Download and store all of the drivers you'll need from the HP website for your specific HDX 18 model and Windows 7.
B) Put the Upgrade DVD in your PC and boot from the DVD (Important)
C) When the DVD starts, select CUSTOM INSTALLATION and install a clean version
D) Select Advanced Disk Options and delete and recreate the partition on your C: drive. Use the whole thing.
E) Install W7 but DO NOT enter the Activation Key when prompted, just leave it blank and press CONTINUE.
F) Follow the directions, create your accounts, set up your PC, install your drivers, connect to your wireless or hard wired network but DO NOT ACTIVATE.
G) Try and get all of the (!)'s out of Device Manager by getting all of the drivers installed that you can find.
H) When your W7 install is functional (don't do anything like screen savers, desktop, etc yet), browse back to the Windows 7 DVD.
I) This time, from within Windows, double-click SETUP and run the upgrade. This time, select UPGRADE and when prompted, enter your Activation Key.
J) Go through with the whole upgrade install. This will be quicker than last time. The drivers will all still be installed. Once you are logged back in and your desktop is ready, go ahead and activate.
K) Now you can set all of your preferences, install your AV software and other applications. Set up your email, restore your data and favorites.
L) Now it's up to you to fix it up the way you want it.
That's all there is to a clean install on an HDX 18. Make sure you have the drivers already downloaded before you start. It makes it a lot easier.
If anyone has questions, please leave them here. There are many folks who've taken the plunge and will be glad to help. -
Yeah, they're all from the beta's!
-
I was going to respond to that but your answer was spot on. Just wait until a week or two goes by and you try to remember where you read the solution to your problem. A "one stop shop" would certainly make that a lot easier. In addition, you mentioned the most important reason of all: REPOSTS! A chronic problem at this website and no surprise it's due to this exact thing.

That "Owners Lounge" thread is far too big to manage. You have all of the new guys with their joy awaiting their machinge intertwined with people with info, queations and tips.
Too hard to find anything, too easy to miss something. -
Kudos!!!!
You Rock!!!!
Thanks for the step by step... it makes it asier for people.. and I am one of those kinds of people.. not everyone here is a computer ninja / pro... so your step by step helps a LOT! and is GREATLY appreciated..
Be well, JW -

I hope this helps and good luck all, JW -
Got my HDX18 in April and it works perfectly with Vista......so I guess it is time to mess with it and upgrade to W7
. Two basic questions....
1. I want to do a clean install. What do you do with the Recovery Partition D on the hard drive? When I install W7 can I delete it and get that space for the main Drive C? Since it is a Vista recovery drive won't it be useless after I upgrade anyway?
2. How do I get all the HP features that were loaded on my computer back once I go to W7. I'm talking about the HP Total Care Advisor along with the Battery Check, HP Update and Media Center (baasically everything in the HP folder on the Start Menu.
Thanks,
Dave -
So what's the word on the on screen graphics for the volume controls, has anyone gotten these fixed?
-
can someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix this for me...
I can NOT delete the windows.old folder after installing W7...
i have tried disk cleanup.. no luck.
please!! thanks! -
You need to TAKE OWNERSHIP of that folder, then you can delete it.
Unzip this file, run the "Install Take Ownership" registry script, and a new item in your right-click pop up menu will appear when you right click a folder or file. Select "TAKE OWNERSHIP" and you're rockin'.
Note: I did not write these scripts, but I do know they work. I forgot where I got them, but someone else deserves credit for them - not me.Attached Files:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
it was driving me crazy!!! -
Thanks. Glad I could help. I was going mental trying to overwrite the Windows Mail folder which I could not do without taking ownership. I was going nuts, even activated the Adminisrator account and STILL could not modify those files.
-
Ok, no one has tried a clean install and figured out the above answers??
On a side note, I went by Best Buy over the weekend and asked one of the "Geeks" if he had any experience installing Windows 7. I told him the type of computer I had and he said it was simple, just install and Windows 7 will "automaticall" find all the drivers I need for everything and will work right away? He doesn't know what he was talking about, right? -
Hi all,
I have recently bought an HDX18-1155 notebook and I am waiting for it to arrive. I found this thread very useful. I am going to replace its dual 320GB 5400RPM hard drive with dual seagate momentum 7200.4 500GB 7200RPM and configure them as raid-0 and install windows 7 ultimate on it. My question is how do I recreate the recovery parition on the new raid-0 array. Any help will be appreciated. -
You could use the factory image of Vista to make recovery DVD's first, then use the DVD's to reinstall onto the new hard drive; I think that would work as long as the program doesn't restore correctly based on size; but that's not likely.
However, there's not much reason to keep that partition if you have the DVD's anyway. -
These links aren't valid anymore. What is it that we SSD owners need? I've been using the RC for a while now with no issues on my Intel SSD that came with my HP HDX18.
-
Is anyone elses audio not sounding good when they use headphones? For some reason my headphones sound horrible when I use them in windows 7. And by horrible I mean it's extremely low, not clear, and just weird.
The speakers by thrmselves are fine. They produce a lot wide range of sound which goes as high as I want it to. But the headphones do not. They sound significantly worse than they did in vista -
try reinstalling the IDT driver package from HP, make sure you are using the P/N on the bottom of the notebook to get the specific drivers for your generation of machine. also, try adjusting the volume and levels using the IDT software.
-
Much thanks, this walk through was so helpful it deserves a specific post of gratitude. I even passed it on to non-HP owners as a guide.
-
I would rather do the clean install. Step K says to simply install your other applications. How do you do that when they were on the C drive you just formatted? What I mean is all the apps that HP put on my computer such as the Smart Media, TV tuner software, Cyberlink DVD, HP Total Care Advisor and so on. Those are only on the Vista restore disks and can't just be selectively installed.
I want the clean install but don't want to have to buy new software for every app. -
I downloaded all of these from the HP support site and installed them without issue.
-
I did the fresh install and it seems the only outstanding issue (that I am aware of) is the top row of buttons not functioning (besides volume)...
also in start i can not open the HP MediaSmart...
any suggestions? Or just re-download/install?
thanks -
Does anyone have the following RED ERROR in their System Log? [Using Event Viewer/Windows Logs/System]
The description for Event ID 1001 from source hpdskflt cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
It creates this log record everytime I boot. I don't notice anything that is not working, so I'm not sure what the deal is.
I Googled this file, and it seems this is the Hewlett Packard Disk Filter program. Anyone know what the deal is with this?
THANKS -
My STEP [A2] should cover this. Download EVERYTHING that HP has on the website for your PC for W7, then save it on a USB disk or CD/DVD for use in STEP [K].
-
Thanks for the reply.
Am I better off downloading Windows 7 from the Microsoft site or buying the disk at a store? I just wonder if you get a later version (better version with more up to date drivers) from the site rather than an older version that could have been in a box for months. -
Hey guys!
Got Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed onto the HDX and its working like a charm! Got all the drivers working too but I seem to have an issue with the touch capacitative keys.
Would the touch keys such as Reverse, Play/Pause, Forward, Stop and Eject work on the normal desktop without having any HP applications open? The MediaSmart touch key works so it gives me that impression.
Plus I tried installing HP Tone Control to try to get the touch buttons for the Bass/Treble control to work to no avail
I reinstalled it twice but it does not work. The volume works smoothly though.
Please advice.
Thanks in advance!

Any ideas as to what it is? Just noticed it. :/
-
wow, great guide for installing windows 7 for HDX...
im thinking of making another guide for the dv9500 and windows 7.... depending on how easy/hard it is to install and demand. -
Ok this applies to anyone who has an unknown device, please follow this procedure. Run device manager and double click on the unknown device in question. Goto the details tab. Select Hardware IDs in the drop down box. Select the top hardware ID and right click-copy. Paste the ID here or google it, it is usually press obvious once you see the google results.
I should also mention it doesn't look like you've got the latest Realtek LAN driver or modem drivers installed.
-
can a mod please add this thread to the "info" sticky? i think it will be useful...
-
Unfortunately there is no hardware ID in the drop down box. lol. I had the system fully configured after the WIn 7 install, but I made the mistake of uninstalling MediaSmart DVD (was getting the unsupported format error on... DVDs lol), and it borked something and left that unknown device (it's not the optical drive. That is listed and working fine) and I haven't been able to reinstall Mediasmart DVD again. So, no clue.
-
It's the HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection, it requires the driver from the HP support page. -
I did the Win 7 upgrade over Thanksgiving and I have everything working EXCEPT I cannot get the MediaSmart TV and MediaSmart MVP installed. The MVP gives an error relating to "error applying transforms" and the MediaSmart Live TV install just dies right at the point the InstallShield Wizard should come up.
On the MediaSmart TV I still have the old version 2.0 installed left over from Vista. I can't uninstall it or install the new 3.0 version. When I try to uninstall it starts to uninstall normally then dies. If I try to install the MediaSmart Live TV 3.0 that is supposed to work with Win 7 it does the same thing. The install pops up, but the InstallShield Wizard never takes over and finishes so the install dies.
Anyone able to get the uninstall or install to work with the TV? -
PeterMichaelW,
You said you installed the MediaSmart MVP and the update to get the MediaSmart buttons above the keyboard to work on the Windows XP mode (W7).
"Concerning that row of buttons above your keyboard... I am trying to refine this process, so that you need not install all the MediaSmart bloatware unless you want to, and still have a functioning row of buttons, so check back here in a few days, but in my 32 bit version, I installed the audio driver listed below, as well as the mediasmart MPV, and then the mediasmart smartmenu update, (both listed on the HP HDX driver page under Vista 32), and now I have fully functional smartmenu button control."
I tried doing this but I get an error saying that this system is not supported, I guess because it is XP and not vista or 7. Could you please tell me what should I do in order to be able to install these 2 updates? Also just to make sure I am installing the right ones on my HDX18-1200, could you post the links for such drivers?
