yes please share and help how you got it to work!!!
-
how'd you get brightness to work? what quicklaunch and video card drivers did you install? did you install a NVIDIA Chipset Driver?
-
Now I have been online help for at least an hour, and am on hold for 10 minutes with 25 minutes more to go in an attempt to exchange it. -
They won't allow you to exchange it b/c you attempted to load XP I would suggest just reinstall from your recovery disks, and be done with it
-
They are allowing me to exchange it - it's just taking forever to do so.
The laptop won't even boot to the point where you can pick if you want to boot from hard disk or cd/dvd so there is no way I could reinstall from my recovery disks. It is obviously a hardware problem. I've only had it for 3 days! -
Tis a suprise, in most cases they would tell you to reload from recovery discs, and if the problem persists they would exchange it

bump for brightness fix
-
It's been a real crusade to downgrade vista to xp pro 64 (in my case) on my Dv7. After many rebootings and following the advise of this great thread I got many things going. Here are the issues I still face:
- No audio. (I get it to work after disabling the Microsoft AA HD) after rebooting it just disappears and I couldn't get to write the bat-file recommended.
- No HDMI driver. (tried many Nvidia drivers, no luck yet)
Still have some yellow signs in device manager but the above are the ones I'm concerned about.
Thanks for the great work and hope we get to use this amazing machine at its full performance without the vista burden. -
please share on the brightness ans func keys. i also cant get my bluetooth to work.
-
Well, I have installed Xp on a DV7 following the advices on this thread, and I'm stuck with the slow boot problem but I only have one hd.
I have the blue-ray drive which XP does not recognize so I supsect this might be related. Anybody found a driver for the blue-ray drive yet?
I also got the sound working (but have to reactivate it each boot) but still have a yellow Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus in the Other devices in device manager... plus 8 other Unknown Devices
We need a list of drivers for this laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE :After doing a bunch of windows updates, the BlueRay drive got finally recognized, and the slow boot problem went away at the same time. Only problem remaining is 8 Unknown devices and one yellow Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus although the sound IS working...
PS,for the guy that was looking for the bluetooth driver, i got it working with sp32883 from hp -
The yellow question mark audio will be for the nVidia HDMI audio-out driver. There is one available, but on my DV5t it will install but you cannot select or appear to use HDMI audio out, so it's a bit pointless.

vista sucks! brightness fix for xp anyone?
-
Hi
I am following your efforts from France -as I'm waiting to be sure XP fully fits on DV7 to get one...
So I gathered this for you on a French thread: "Only problem remaining is 8 Unknown devices"
quote in french :
"Pour les 8 drivers manquants, j'ai trouvé :
Il s'agit des "boutons de lancement d'application directe". J'ai le "driver", je les ai uploadés ici :
http://rapidshare.com/files/144763668/Btn_lancement_app_direct.rar
Translation : about the 8 missing drivers, I found out : they are the direct launch boutons. I found and uploaded the driver here :...
Hope it helps. Bytheway, as I highly need sound to work fine in any way, and as it seems the big problem with DV7/XP is the sound driver, if anyone succeded to make it fully works, please tell us how !
Cheers -
I can confirm it's the blu-ray drive that cause the ridicoulus boot time and sometimes even 1-2 reboots. Try for yourself and remove it, the computer will boot normally. I have dual SATA disks, no problems when both are connected. It must be the stupid DRM protection and blu-ray that cause the trouble.
But no way this will force me to use bloatware like Vista, I'll go on with XP but without sound for a while. Sarcasms from CassilineKnight definitely doesn't make me change my mind either, I know enough about Windows to know when to say stop.
And btw, blu-ray drive is Sony NEC Optiarc BC-5500S
and Audio Codec is IDT 92HD71B7 -
Still no sound and mute Orange. I have an audio interface connected thu the firewire port and it works just fine. The beauty of having a laptop is being able to work "wirelessly" so I hope we find a fix for this flaw.
It's amazing the amount of people having issues with IDT drivers, not only with XP but Vista. There are even threads out there describing IDT (former Sigmatel) as spyware. Just google "STACSV.EXE" or "STACAPI.DLL". (components of their drivers).
Three more things that happens with my dv7 on xp. First: Once it comes back from "sleep mode" it requires a tremendous amount of time to come back and it becomes extremely slow. Second: I tried to logon on safe mode and it just dosn't load. Third: when playing DVD's, video is fragmented or pixeled. Anybody know how to fix these?
P.D: CassilineKnight: Go Vista yourself!! -
I tried those button drivers and they actually worked. I dunno how but they got ride of the yellow exclamations tho
Ill update the front page. The last major issue s flawless sound.... -
those button drivers didn't work for me. mind explaining how u got them to work?
Thnaks in advance.. -
does your brightness control work?
-
Hi guys,
First of all I want to tell you how happy I am to be a member of this forum
You helped me so much, thank you all!! -
1. Unrar the file that you downloaded.
2. Go find the first unknown device (the first from last eight) and begin the driver installation procedure.
3. Use the Install from a list of specific location (Advanced) option and drive the wizard to the place that you have been unrar the file with the drivers, complete the procedure.
You should be watching a nice driver installation now
If that happened, just repeat the all procedure for the remain 7 unknown devices and from now on in step 3 you can use the Install the software automatically (Recommended) option.
Let us know if was all ok!! -
Oh! I forgοt to say that the laptop I downgraded is a HP Pavilion dv7-1020ev.
And unknown00 brightness control work just fine for me! -
yes, I tried installing them manually, but not sucess for any of the unknown devices.. Did any one try them on 64x? that's actually the message I got..("make sure it is designed to work with Windows for 64x based systems")
Thanks.. -
Hm, I don't have any unknown devices on my dv5t. I'm keen to try that small button driver. Perhaps I simply right click on the inf and select install? I will try it, but it might be designed for the dv7t only. Where did that file come from?
Is anyone able to post screenshot(s) of a fully expanded dv7t device manager with all possible drivers installed, so I can compare to the dv5t? Thanks. -
I can confirm the files posted by our French friend does work. I'm on a 32bit Vista DV7.

hi,
what's your windows xp pro (installation disk) original installation version (service pack..)
i used a windows xp pro sp3 install disk for my dv7-1080el notebook
solved all the problems except the blu-ray incompatibility (without the sata blu-ray disk the system boots correctly i can confirm ..)
after the long / slow boot the drive activity led still persist active
and sometimes if i check for new hardware the system freezes for a while
the freeze still cause a data loss (classic message that windows can't write
$Mft or other system event files..)
all is related to the blu-ray incompatibility
(my BD ROM IS: sony optiarc BD ROM BC-5500S (SATA))
i run windows update with no results the slow boot still persist ...
did you (or anyone else..) find the right windows xp pro hotfix number that could fix this incompatibility ?
regards
Michele -
Because lura_mens message shows clearly that this is the problem.
iuralaedunt that may sound weird to you but try to start your laptop in safe mode, if its ask you to press Esc in order to cancel loading sptd.sys do it.
When you login in your account open My computer and check if the blue ray device is present and recognized by windows.
If it is, just restart your computer and check if now is ok and windows recognize the blue ray device in normal mode to.
If not, I have more advices -
supposedly the .rar you posted fix's the brightness problem for dv5t...but doesn't fix mine. what version of the quicklaunch buttons are you using and what version of nvidia drivers are you using?
-
warnings or request to strike esc key for ...)
but not in normal mode ...
even if i boot first in safe mode (no sptd.sys driver (
i don't have sptd.sys on my system) seen on safe boot loading ... the last driver loaded is the famigerated mup.sys)
than in normal mode (the system start again freezing etc...)
till a final solution for now i disabled the bd rom drive under safe mode
otherwise i can't boot in normal mode quickly ...
notes:
the winxp32 sp3 is installed on the first sata (320 gb) drive partitioned as follow:
1. ( C: ) vista ultimate 64 bit (19,53 GB)
2. ( E: ) windows xp sp3 32 bit (37,99 GB)
3. ( G: ) DATA (240,57 GB)
i first installed vista , than xp sp3 (and than restored the vista boot
from the vista dvd running via command console via: "bootrec /fixboot")
thanks for any kind of help

can't get brightness control to work for dv5t
-
@ iuralaedunt
Alright, you dont have sptd.sys, that let me suppose that neither Alcohol 120% nor Daemon tools or some other related program is installed in your system.
Thats not a problem as the only thing is useful regarding your problem is sptd.sys which those programs install to your system.
Here you can find the latest version of sptd.sys in order dont be obligated to install some extra program if you dont want.
Be aware that sptd.sys might cause problems to your system! Thats what many people say.
Personally never had any problem with it!!!
If you decide to give it a try after you install it and make the necessary reboot check if there was some result. If not, repeat the safe mode process.
Good luck! -

Well I finally got my replacement notebook and spent most of the day setting up dual boot vista/XP on it. Mostly working now (after a lot of trial and error) after following stuff in this thread.
Problem now is the Nvidia HDMI - I have a yellow ! with 'Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus' in the Device Manager. I am not sure where or what driver to use for that?
Everything else seems to work ok except:
- not sure where the brightness control is so not sure if it works
- haven't tried the remote control (and really tired now)
- don't have blue ray -
I don't think HDMI audio works with the dv7t so not a lot of point in getting drivers for it - see post 1. There are drivers, but the UAA bus doesn't recognise it so you cannot select it to use it, so rather pointless trying.
-
My UUA bus was recognizing it and putting up a 'new hardware found' message whenever I boot up. (Using kamicats method on page 7 to set up the audio, the batch file disable/enable the UUA bus, so it would find this since I didnt' have a driver for it)
This morning I found a driver that sticks - every other one I tried would would say device couldn't start.
see http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/official-nvidia-nforce-drivers-1523-1524-xp-vista-vt71992.html
I don't know how well it works because I haven't tried the HDMI out stuff yet.
But in any case I am not too worried about because I can boot Vista to use that stuff. I just wanted to get rid of the annoying error message on XP boot.
Otherwise the sound works fine. Just makes a 'pop' sound whenever something starts/ends playing - I guess the speaker is turning on and off?
Now, just have to install all my software so I can actually work on this thing!
Thanks everyone who posted help on this! -
xnera, can u even select HDMI audio in your sound setup in control panel with the drivers installed?
You are right about the "pop." Every 10 secs or so it will make it, it's the speakers. If there is a control panel icon for IDT audio you might be able to disable the power management from there (can do on teh dv5t if using the windows update drivers) to remove the pop, else might be able to do the same thing with a registry tweak somehow. -
go figure ..
my first approach to the problem was just install the sptd driver!!!
.... but never thinked before your suggestion to follow the 3 steps
(in safe mode even before the sptd installation the bd-rom was recognized..):
(
install sptd
reboot in safe mode & stop loading sptd.sys (the key step ...)
reboot in normal mode
)
:-D
the only annoying fact is related to the device restart trick for the
IDT audio card everytime windows xp boots ... investigating ...
thanks a lot.
Mike -
I checked my Vista control panel and the power management option is there, but I am unable to check/uncheck it.
I scanned my registry both Vista and XP and while I am not sure what to look for, I am not seeing anything that shouts out 'power management'.
Is everyone else having this same problem with the popping and sound? -
Hi all,
I own a dv7-1050ef (bought in France) and I'm still struggling to get XP to work on this laptop.
Here is the procedure I use:
- Format the partition
- Install XP sp2
- Do the 3 steps for the sptd file thing
- Install the graphics card drivers and ethernet in order to have access to internet
- update windows to sp3
- Install intel drivers
- install the other drivers
until the last step, the computer reboots perfectly. Once I've installed the last drivers (sound and others), then the reboot takes about 15mins and the CD drive isn't recognised anymore...
I then reboot in safe mode (note that it still asks to press esc for the sptd file) and restore to an earlier version. From there, the first reboot is fine but then, on the second reboot, still this bloody CD drive is not recognised anymore. Note that it doesn't matter to which change I roll back to, it still does the same thing.
The drive is a blu ray by the way...
Do you guys have any advice on what I can do to get this pc to work on XP ? I have no choice but to use XP since my work softwares don't work at all on Vista...
Cheers
-
i suggest you to slipstream with nlite the sp3 into your window xp cd (i prefere starting from a windows xp sp0 version(no service pack)...) + all the windows xp drivers (chipset , video , audio , firewire , etc...)
format / install
at the first boot install daemon-tools or the sptd driver (reboot for installation... )
by the way the SPTD "trick" procedure must be the last on on your windows xp installation chain...
remember after the daemon-tools / sptd drivers installation you must reboot in safe mode and PRESS ESC when the boot process asks you to load the sptd.sys .. if your
bd-rom is recognized (sony optiarc ?)... you can reboot in normal mode succesefully...
Mike
p.s.
never use "restore points" before a successfull daemon-tools / sptd installation & the safe mode "trick" "press ESC to cancel loading of sptd.sys" (once more you must press ESC!) important step. -
is anyone going to be writing a guide covering all the bases discussed in this thread?
I've been trying to follow the advice given in this thread, but there are just too many variables. -
Ok, after following the instructions on this forum, I now have xp installed with an internet connection. I only have 2 problems.
1. No Sound. (which I will search for drivers for).
2. Video Drivers not properly installed (screen refresh rate is painfully slow). when moving a window from one location to the other, the screen updates very slowly. Same thing when scrolling through a webpage.
UPDATE (This issue is now resolved, thanks to the drivers the Original Poster of this thread linked. thanks). -
UPDATE:
MS UUA bus driver.
I really hope someone comes up with a better solution to this soon. I would hate to have to buy a sound card. -
earlier in the thread there is a method i meantioned for jump starting drivers. ill add it to my first post
-
looking at my device manager screen, I actually dont think i was able to get the nvidia hdmi audio driver installed correctly. Will post more on this later.
-
Try this HDMI driver, the one ProtonXX linked to does not work for me, and from what I can read here, it does not work for a lot of people.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_hdmi_audio_winxp_10.3.0.23.html -
The HDMI driver i have is a bit strange.. It works as a 2nd sound card. If you goto control panel -> Sound & Audio Properties > Advanced > options > Properties > Mixer Device and set the default audio device to HDMI it will work then.
Also one more odd thing is that the HDMI audio can install on the IDT device & vice versa. If one dont work try changing the IDT to the HDMI drive & the HDMI to the IDT and see if it works then.
Ill update the first page with the new driver
One last note, if the HDMI cable is unplugged the Nvidia HDMI audio option will NOT appear in Sound & Audio Properties > Advanced > options > Properties > Mixer Device -
With the new driver, it shows there as well.
By the way, I solved the small sound problem on Windows XP Professional with SP3. Installation is easy, create the slipstreamed CD or use the one you already have, of course, the SATA drivers will have to be slipstreamed as well.
After installation I quickly installed the Intel INF, first step, then Realtek LAN driver, WiFi Link 5100 AGN driver, card reader driver, etc, and lastly the video driver.
I went to WindowsUpdate and downloaded everything I needed, such as updates!!!and a new Realtek LAN driver.
After this I still had 8 unknown dvices in Device manager, so I installed the button drivers so kindly provided here. All 8 unknown devices were gone, no more yellow signs in my Device Manager. Too bad this time it's a bad thing, since I still had no sound, modem(which I never need anyway, and I am surprised HP still offers such a prehistoric device) and no HDMI. Tried a bunch of IDT drivers, UAA updates, none of them wanted to install, not even the HDMI driver provided here.
So I went to Device Manager and uninstalled the UAA. Then 3 new devices showed up, modem, IDT sound, and unknown device. I installed the drivers for the first two, but after the first reboot, no matter what I did, devcon trick or not, no more sound.
So I unpacked the UAA kb888111xpsp2 from MS, while I tried to install it I copied the files it creates, it failed to install, of course, since SP3 has a newer version, and then I manually copied the files over the original ones found in system32 and system32/drivers(you can easily figure out which files goes where, you can copy all files to both locations if you are lazy to sort them out).
Restart, then the devices showed up again, sound, HDMI and modem. I installed the IDT drivers from MS, the ones on windowsupdate, manually copied the .cpl file in system32(but I think the driver does that by itself when it installs), installed the HDMI driver linked above, and tadaaaaa, everything works, all speakers, not just the sub. Mute button works, it just does not want to turn orange anymore
Restarted, everything is just fine. I dunno if I still need the devcon trick, but I will test and I will get back to you guys, but untill then, here is a pack of the drivers I used(minus the ones already linked here). You can figure which is which, it's pretty self explanatory.

I am still having trouble. I keep trying to install the HDMI driver linked above, rebooting, and it still doesnt show in device manager.
this is a really frustrating problem.
