Somehow I got my network working, dont ask me how..
For the video card (still not working), I use ATI Catalyst 9.4 XP32
    I go under Driver\Driver\XP_Inf and edit cx_78234.inf

My 4530 is missing and I have info for 4570:
    "ATI Radeon HD 4570 " = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9598&SUBSYS_3031148C

    So I add my line:

    "ATI Radeon HD 4530 " = ati2mtag_RV630, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9553&SUBSYS_3624103C

that's the ID hardware string I found under Vista64.
I save the file and run catalyst...
"Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or opperating system. Setup will now exit"...

What am I doing wrong here?

wow 41 pages really??? Reminds me of EA hate pages on gaming forums , gee you can tell Vista is truly loved haha, hate it here just like you guys. When the US army spends billions of dollars of computing and puts labels on there stuff "Don't install Vista" yah that should be telling you something. It sucks. Anyways I'm about to venture into it this weekend and go to XP on a Dv7-1270U so wish me luck, oh and I was hoping one of you guys could give me a quick tutorial on what slipstream is and how to use it, thanks very much i will post my results this weekend, thanks.....oh one more question.....what can I do to protect my laptop so I don't screw it up during the downgrade? thanks guys

I know I'm bumping an old post, but I'll be attempting to install XP X64 on my DV7-2044CA this weekend and was wondering what SATA driver I should be adding onto the disc with NLite. Ideas?

    UPDATE:

I was posting in this thread several months ago, when I got the laptop. my model is dv7-1025nr.

I never was able to get a 100% fix for the sound issues. Batch file needed, and then sound would only come out of the left speaker.

I no longer have any version of Windows on this laptop. I'm running Ubuntu Linux, 9.04. Ironically, I have the exact same issue with the sound. (it works perfectly with headphones or external speakers). Other than that, there are absolutely no issues with running Ubuntu, or Win XP, on this model.

Glad to see several of you have had good results with XP. Keep posting if you need help. My only reason for taking it off is that I like ubuntu. a lot. I can always use my GF's PC which has vista, if i need it.

Update from me as well: I managed to get XP SP3 running fairly well. While I'm still tracking down drivers, I have Wifi, Video, sound and LAN working perfectly.

However, I have a strange problem. Mice do not work when plugged in. It gets picked up by Windows, installs a driver and then simply refuses to move. The mouse receives power, but that's all. I don't see it in the Device Manager unless I unplug it and plug it in again which makes it appear for a few seconds.

Any ideas? I've tried multiple mice and multiple USB ports.

[EDIT] I've noticed that the mouse sits in the "Human Interface Device" section rather than under "Mice and other pointing devices".
[EDIT 2] I've decided to re-install XP and not to remove the fluff with NLite this time around - everything works perfectly. No more mouse problems.

    I received my DV7T-2000 yesterday.

I did not catch it in this thread but if I missed it sorry, 42 pages of info and questions you can miss things.

http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php - This is the tool to modify the ATI drivers to work, so you don't have to download HP's outdated versions.
Just download the current ATI version, extract then run DH mobility modder against it, then install as normal.

Does anyone with a DV7t-2000 have an issue where the sound icon is amber indicating it is muted even though it is not? My button toggles the sound in XP, just the light does not seem to be right, it always stays amber when in XP. When I reboot into the bios it is white as soon as XP loads it turns amber but sound works.

Otherwise XP is installed and everything seems to be working nicely. It's a free upgrade going from Vista 64 to XP 32 bit. Boots quicker and is much quicker with everything else when working on it.

This driver kicks butt! Not only everything works correctly now (the mute button, subwoofer, etc), but also the sound quality has been vastly improved. I used to have a distorted sound from speakers at high volumes with previous drivers and now everything sounds great. The link you gave appears to be broken. The driver can be downloaded from HP ftp server: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45044.exe .

I've never had a working mixer, no matter what driver version I installed. I also wish the subwoofer volume control was available in the general volume control panel.

    edit:
the link seems to be all right, some glitch of mine.

from what ive read the ones with switchable graphics grabs should not be messed with unless you really know what you are doing.

Also why run xp at this point? support is about to end for it very soon

    Goodmorning,
I've a big problem with my DV7-1170el for the AUDIO support.

I used the supplied files in this very useful thread but the notebook gets a strange behavior.

My system is Windows XP SP3 based, IT language file and here's a screen of my Device Panel (with that configuration the AUDIO doesn't work and doesn't appear).

but if I uninstall the driver and I launch a new hardware probing... the audio comes up!

Unfortunately, everytimes I restart the system the audio goes down.

    Thanks for your support!
