I am going to buy the HP DV6000. Should I go with the Intel or AMD processor and why?

The AMD X2 Turion will be cheaper and the Intel C2D will be faster and offer a little better battery life. The choice is mostly based upon your budget.

Despite the shipping delays, HP has kept their word and my package left China yesterday (actually 2 days ago on Chinese time) and has arrived in Boston today. I'll be picking up the package at the FedEx depot tonight, will submit pics and initial reviews tomorrow...

    Expected delivery 10:30 Friday AM!

What are the first things I should look for, to make sure everything is OK? I read about checking the screen for dead pixels. How is that done? Any other important first things to do? This is my first laptop, though I have nad MANY desktops over the years...

    Thanks!

Hi fellow dv6000t owner! Here's the link to dead pixel buddy. http://www.laptopshowcase.co.uk/downloads.php?id=1

Make sure you back up C:\SWSetup (that folder contains all the drivers for ur notebook. if you want to do a reformat, which I am doing right now, make sure you back that folder up!)

    Good luck.

i got mine at 11am today, WOOT. With my time with it so far, I LOVE it. One thing though, the lid is kinda strange. It does not have any latch, seems to stay shut fine, but a little strange. Also, lid seems loose-ish, but really isnt. Other impressions?

I fail to understand why so many of you are excited over this laptop, especially the quotes for $1500-$1700 that only includes 1gb of ram and an older Nvidia Go 7400.

For that same price range you can get 2gb of ram, an Nvidia 7600, an 80gb 7200 sata drive from many resellers of the Compal HEL-80 and HGL-30. And with the Asus A8Js right around the corner you get even a sweeter deal.

Just wondering if I'm missing something :)

i got my laptop on Wednesday. It looks great, and is pretty fast, however a couple of issues:

-Integrated camera was claimed to be 1.3MP, so it should be able to take pictures at 1152*864, right? well, this particular camera only takes pictures at ordinary VGA resolution: 640*480 - thats 0.3MP.

I wonder why hp is trying to pass this off as a 1.3MP camera...perhaps they mean that its 1.3MP interpolated or some crap like that.

-One of the little rubber dots that cover the screws on the front of the screen is missing! I don't know if it got here like this or if it dropped off somewhere. Not that big a deal, but this laptop is only one and a half day old!

Loving my dv6000t so far. I'll have some pics and more info up soon.

One question: Has anyone noticed a very highpitched ringing sound that is coming from inside the unit? It doesn't seem to happen all the time, and interestingly only happens when no applications are running. I'll hear the noise, and then as soon as I run a program and the processor begins working, it stops. Could this be a potential problem?

It might be your cd/dvd drive. When my unit reads CD, it makes a highpitched noise.

I got mine for $1350. With full everything. Plus, all I play is WoW, and so all I need is a 7400, I get good battery life, which I would not get with an Asus.

What are you afraid of? All you need to do is follow one of the guides here on the board. It's not a hard task. You can't break software. It just may take you a couple of tries to get it working right if you do something wrong. Just backup your SWSetup folder, burn your backup discs, download the latest drivers for your hardware devices and burn them to disc or something, and get started!

    Hi,

I have a simple question for those of you that have your laptops already shipped. I placed an order on HP about 10 days ago and they said the shipping is on 20th of this month. It was OTC and they told me they build them in TN, USA. But many people said it shiped from Shanghai, China. Can some one elaborate on this please.

Almost all HP's(just like every other brand name) are built in China. Only some higer end workstations are built in the US. Their desktops are built in Mexico.

Hey guys. I'm not really new to this site because i've been reading it for a long time, but I finally got a DV600t and I really like it except for a few things. One, is that when running on battery power there is a high pitched whining noise that doesn't seem to go away unless it is plugged in and that get kind of annoying. And Second, I don't know if others have had this problem, but when I tried to burn the system recovery disks the program froze up halfway through the first disk, so i tried it again and it did the same thing. I also tried using the Sonic Program to burn a backup of the SWSetup folder and once again it said there was an error. Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix the whining issue or know why my notebook is giving me errors when i try to burn dvd's? Thanks.

Well I write to you on my new dv6000t which only took about a day to get here. So far I've been really pleased. I got a philips screen which I have had no problems with so far and am happy with it. The only, very minor, thing that is a little anoying is that there are two small scatches on the top of the notebook, one barely noticeable and one that is visible but discrete.

haha I wanted a core2duo sticker too. It seems we all seem to be having that hight pitched sound. It only appears to happend if the system is idle for me but annoying nonetheless.

I get the high pitched noise as well, but it's not THAT annoying. I had to put my ear really close to my laptop to hear it. (sometimes when my comp loads a lot of things, it's a little louder, but that's rare) I have the centrino duo sticker also. I wish I had ... 2 Duo sticker... haha anyone tried reformatting yet? im too afraid.

    Hi Everyone,

Yeah, what the heck?? We all have Core 2 Duo Processors, and yet the sticker says Centrino Duo...Whatever. If you look at your Computer Properties, you know what processor you really have.

As for the highpitched noise coming from the processor: This was really bothersome to me. I posted an inquiry on the "Hardware Components and Aftermarket Upgrades" forum. I received a response from "quiong" (thanks again quiong). It reads:

"This seems to be a pretty common problem with the Core 2 Duo processors, when they are idle they make a high pitched buzzing sound. The solution that works for most people is to install RMClock and check "Run HLT Command when OS is idle"

You can download the RMClock program @ http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml

Make sure to check "Run HLT Command when OS is idle (restart required)" under the "Managment" file.

    It seems to work...

For current owners of the dv6000t, does your fan seem to be running a lot? Mine is almost constantly running. It's not too loud, but could this be a problem??

Hmm... I just noticed another little thing... The audio seems distorted when i listen to a cd on the notebook. When I listen to songs on my hardrive (i.e itunes) it works fine. And this also happens to the audio on a dvd. Does anybody have any ideas of why it could be doing this or how to fix it? Thanks

Just wanted to give you guys a mini update on my notebook shipment. It was to be shipped sept 18, but they shipped it two days earlier. its already in indianapolis, and i should be receiving it on the 20th of sept. YAY HP! So far so good. i give hp a 5 out of 5 in terms of shipment. lets see what i feel about the notebook performance. from looking at people that already have it, they seem to be nitpicking on the small things.

I received my DV6000 on Friday and have had little time for anything else besides getting to know it. My retiring notebook is a Dell Precision M70. I am so glad I purchased this HP. (even though it arrived with the wrong display hp is quite willing to help in any way with that) Is extremely quiet. Yes the fan runs what seems to be often but the laptop stays relatively cool. The bottom of the unit is very cool compared to my M70. I have dumped a couple gigs of Crucial ram in it and am waiting for my new Seagate 7200 rpm hard drive to arrive from Newegg on Monday. The bloatware was not too excessive and easy to remove. Cleaned the registry and cleared the startup processes. Starts quickly so will be probably just Ghost my HD to the new one. I have not heard the high-pitched noise others have written about so feel lucky there. I have ordered the HP xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base with a 300 gb hard drive. That thing has component video out which is pretty awesome. I am hoping to completely do away with my desktop with this setup. I have owned 10 or so notebooks and the build and quality of this lappy surpasses anything I have ever used before.

I sure appreciate all the insight I received from the posts here on this forum in making this purchase.

Hello everyone, I too am waiting for my dv6000t to be delivered. Mustard, I spoke to HP about adding a 7200 RPM Seagate HD myself, and they said that it would not work at the 7200 RPM speed. Apparently the motherboard only supports up to the 5400 RPM model. However I was a bit iffy about if that were true or not, lemme know how you make out with it ;)

Thanks for the info on the HD Airman...I was not aware of that but was very curious why they didn't offer the 7200 rpm option when I customized mine. I will post some results when I get it installed. Hopefully your HP rep was mistaken.

Just to give you heads up. If you have ordered your DV6000 in the past 20-30 days, you can get around 200-300 back, because HP just reduced the prices. I called tonight and got $213.21 back. So my DV6000t, which I am still waiting for its delivery, will come up to be 1250.00 after mail in rebate.

    Hi guys..

I faced a weird problem with the wireless...it ran OK for 2 days but today the connections were flaky...the wireless connection gets disabled automatically and the 1394 network connection gets connected....and yes I was using the Windows Wireless client....

To fix the problem I did the following steps...

    1. Uninstall HP Wireless Assistant
    2. Download Intel ProSet Application for 3945ABG
    3. Disable i 1394 connection
    4. Install Intel ProSet Application
    5. Reboot..and connect to your wireless network

Let me know if you guys came across the same problem.

    Thanks.

Note: As you know Intel ProSet app doesnt come with HP when you buy it unlike the Dell's.

Because my DV6000 came in with the wrong display, I reordered one last night with the correct one and not only had the price dropped, but they had free upgraded ram, free upgraded hard-drive, free Media Center. So the new config had all these extras and was $180 less. Do call them!

I put my battery in wrong, I think, and can't get it out. I slid the release slide all of the way over, and dropped the battery in. Now the battery is stuck in there, and no matter what I do, it won't come out. I guess I am some kind of dope, and should just have pushed the battery in without moving the release slide.

    DON'T DO WHAT I DID!

I tried taking it apart, and took all of the screws out of the bottom, including in the ram compartment, hoping to expose the back side of the slide release mechanism. However, I couldn't get the bottom to come off. I really didn't try prying or forcing it open; just didn't want to break it.

The computer works, battery charges, so it is not the end of the world, but I would like to fix it. Any suggestions?

bgeiger, I have the same problem with my battery (12-cell) except I know I didn't put it in incorrectly. The latch release lever was in the default, out-of-the-box position, and the battery snapped in easily the first time. Then the lever wouldn't move at all when I tried to remove the battery. After much struggling, pulling up on the lever, I finally got the battery out, but the lever was then just hanging loosely; I was able to snap the lever back in by pressing on it and now the latch works correctly (i.e. the battery is easily inserted and removed), but the battery seems slightly loose (moves up and down 1/8th to 1/4th of an inch).

I think the problem is that the latch's position out of the box was incorrect, and the latch needs to be moved back and forth a couple of times to make sure it's in the proper "receving" position before inserting the battery for the first time. Anyone else with this problem?

Laptop is perfect in every other way so far.

Question regarding my previous post -- do others have any "play" in the battery, or does it sit tight in its compartment with no movement at all?

Has anyone played any games on it yet? I'm trying to find out how capable the Nvidia 7400 is at playing current games. Well, really, all I care about is World of Warcraft, it's all I play, so if anyone out there has tried playing it on high settings please share with me your experience, thanks in advance.

Very happy with this laptop. No problems so far. The LGPhillips screen is perfect. I have to turn it down a couple of settings just so that my eyes doesnt strain after prolonged use. If I put my ears next to the laptop I can hear a highpitched noise, but since I am not using it as a pillow, it doesnt bother me. My old Dell Latitude 500 also had a high pitched noise which was even more pronounced. The fan goes on at reasonable intervals. More so than my cousin's macbook, but then his runs extremely hot.

As for games, I play BF2 at 1280 x800 with medium to low settings. Runs fairly smooth.

I am also playing Company of Heros. This game is more of a resource hog than BF2. I play at 1280 x 800 with mostly low settings. I prefer smooth running games at the cost of eye candy. So maybe you could get away with setting somethings at medium setting and still feel comfortable.

Havn't had any problems with the Battery (6 cell). It is very tight with no freeplay. I can see why you would have a hard time getting it out if the release was not working properly

Overall great notebooks. I have no regrets. It is amazing what $1000 will get you these days.

Got my laptop 5-7 days earlier than I expected, so I'm quite happy with HP's shipping commitments. Overall the dv6000 is a great buy. No complaints at well except for the minor ones such as bloatware galore, and the palm rest area of the laptop can get a bit warm. Also, is it possible to get rid of the sound for the blue buttons? Haven't bothered to play any games yet, but the most I'm expecting out of the geforce 7400 is CIV IV or a game of that sort.

as shown above you can see the amount of bloat they put in. The camera works well might I add. No hassle thus far. I'll install Adobe Premiere Pro and see how well it runs and tell you all later.

    ColonelMustard--

I've ordered a dv6000t with pretty much the works. Will be doing music with it so I wanted a 7200 rpm HD on it too. Was going to order the smallest, least expensive HD from them, promptly rip it out and replace it with a Hitachi Deskstar 100 GB. But they told me that to do so would void my warranty. I'm not interested in doing this. Have you considered this, or do you know of some type of work around on this?

Also it's very interesting what Airman said about the notebook not being able to have an HD operate at 7200 rpm. Wonder if that's true.

I ordered mine Friday. Looking forward to it.
