I think that's a good choice, especially if the 1501 isn't even roadready. It's silver paint rubs off really easily everywhere. I don't think you'll miss the warranty, becasue in 3 years, due to Moore's Law, the speed/power/efficiency will surpass today's by so many times that you probably won't even care for a mere replacement of old parts.

@people bothered by the vista graphics subscore reduction
Keep in mind that the vista experience score isn't a real benchmark, so it dosen't predict performance in apps, games, etc. It is essentially meant to check if your pc meets minimum requirements to run Vista and Aero, but any increase/decrease in score that's above this threshold dosen't necessary represent a change in performance, and the score represents only those factors associated with vista and aero, not any other apps (games, PS, 3d modeling software, etc) If you really want to compare drivers, try 3dmark (free) or some other software that benchmarks video card performance based on the factors that matter when using 3d apps. You can also benchmark using Blender (also free) to test your card's competance in high-quality 3d modeling/rendering.
The moral of this story--vista experience scores are uselessbenchmark your CPU/RAM with SuperPi and your video card with 3dmark to get a reliable, valid report instead.

Hey I have one question about the dv6000t: you can't upgrade the gpu right? 7400 is all we got?
-
I just got my new dv6000t. And when i turn on the laptop, the screen displays " Operating System Not Found"
. I do not know what to do right now. Please help me

Take all of your disks (i.e. CD, floppy, usb) out of any drives that might be conencted, so it boots from the HDD. If that dosen't work, put in the recovery disk......and leave it alone for about 8 hours
.
@nsegative
It's possible, but quite difficult. You'll need to find anther video card with the same interface (there are several), and you can't buy laptop video cards retail, so they are pretty hard to find. You'll also have to gut the laptop, since they're not made to be replaced easily like desktop video cards. All in all, it's really difficult, but it can be done. -
Hm. I just do a fresh install from start and it finish in like half an hour. Is it too fast ??

Thank you to all of the contributors on this forum and especially this thread. My Compaq Deskpro died and pushed me into the 21st century. I discovered this forum and began learning abiut laptops.
After several days of study I gave myself a $1,000 budget (including California tax) and decided on the dv6000t, in part because of its overwhelming popularity.
My laptop will live at home and be work-oriented for word processing, spreadsheets, internet browsing and email. I don't do any serious gaming. As of a little while ago, I am the excited new owner of the following:
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950 - Core
HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
FREE Upgrade from 512MB to 1GB DDR2 (2x512MB)!!
FREE Upgrade from 60GB 5400 RPM to 80GB 5400 RPM
FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
No TV Tuner w/remote control
6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
My new laptop as shipped came in at $920 and $995 with tax. I stayed on budget with advice from the forum that it would be easy to upgrade to 2GB memory and more GB hard drive. Also, I learned not to buy the Norton service and download AVG and Spybot for free. By the way, do I need a separate firewall program?
Now, I need to have Word, Excel and Outlook for work. Fortunately, the nice telephone salesperson advised me to buy the Microsoft Office Basic from them separately at $149. Of course, I also need to be able to backup my new laptop (Roxio Backup MyPC @ $49), migrate files from the old desktop (Belkin Vista Migration Cable @ $40), carry the new laptop if need be (Targus Blacktop Messenger Case @ $40), get rid of my printer serial port connector (HP 6' USB 2.0 Cable @ $20) and use a mouse (HP Wireless Laser Mini Mouse @ $40).
OK, I know these items add $338, plus tax, but I figure I'm getting them just this once since I'm a newbie and they don't really count toward the actual laptop oh well.
Again, thanks to all those who led me to the dv6000t. This thread and the Dummy Guide are my new best friends, and any advice is always appreciated. -
I'm thinking about getting a dv6000t with maxed specs (except for the hd). I'm curious to what games you guys play on your dv6000's. I'm wondering if it'll do stuff like half life 2 and other big fps's pretty well, as well as if it'll run oblivion. Can it run WoW on max settings?
This is assuming 2.0ghz core duo 2, geforce go 7400, and 2gigs of ram. -
If I wanted to change out my wireless card (intel 345abg) with a better different one (atheros), would it work? I heard that intel has a type of bios lock that will only let you use certain cards from a list in the bios, and you wont be able to boot. Someone please tell me this isent true!

Hello all I'm a new...
I just purchased my hp dv6375us laptop yesterday, and I have to say that I love. it's blazing fast.. I am really shocked.
I actually had purchased a dv2225 nr about a month ago for 899.00 @ bestbuy and it has the Athalon xpx2 turion tl-50 1.6ghz processor.. IMHO it was just to slow. the pc itslef is great, but the processor just didn't jump when I say jump.. big difference compared to my intel powered lappy.
The TV card... wow. I never had one before, pluged it in last night and a watching tv I was.. lol... pretty good pic quality also.. I'm still learning how to use it though, and a extension for the antenna would be nice... -- any ideas. -- ..
Anyway just wanted to say hello. and let u allz know I love this lappy..
It makes a great companion to my e6600 core2duo custom built pc.. -
@nsegative
I think the each card only comes in one or two interface types, you can probably find the info for the 7400 online somewhere. If you are thinking of upgrading to another nvidia card of the same series, it should be the same interface anyway, but the card's form factor/other attributes may also make it incompatable. Like I said, upgrading isn't really practical, it's much easier to get a performance boost by upgrading your HDD (spindle speed) or CPU/RAM.
@kdubbs
The wireless card is partially integrated into the system mobo and the case (switch on the front) so no, you can't. The good news is that you won't find many better cards out there.
@shovelbum
IMHO, the belkin cable is a waste of $40. Just connect your PC's via an ethernet cable and share all of your old Pc's files, or if that isn't an option just transfer using a blank DVD/CD or USB drive.
@johnnri
I have a 2ghz/2GB dv6000t with the stock crappy hard drive. The games I play are:
Guild Wars: Full Resolution, Maximum Settings, Vsync, No Anti-aliasing
Half-Life 2: Full Resolution, Max settings, No Anti-Aliasing, No vsync
^ includes all other games based on the engine -
wow, bf2 runs pretty smooth.. I am really loving this notebook. It's gonna be great for when I'm on the go..
I still have a few more games to install.. so far got all the bf2's installed. just need to throw on call of duty 2, halo, and should be good.. All the steam games run super sweet... counter stike source, half life deathmatch, day of defeat.. this is great. -
I reconsidered my order realizing Vista=Graphics, so I called HP and changed to the 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400 graphics card, but had to go from T5600 to T5300 processor for the budget; I hope this is the right trade-off since HP won't let me change again.
-
I am impressed by this notebook. It runs multiple programs so smoothlty.
Anyhow, I installed bf2 last night, and started playing. The game runs great, and this was with playing wirelessly. (router is dlink di-624)(nothing special). I also installed my Steam games, which consist of half life deathmatch, couter strike source, day of defeat..
I have yet to play call of duty 2, we will see how it runs. So far I am pleased with the performace of this laptop.. -
I am running bf2, I want to see what's the max settings that I can run on this lappy.. currently at mostly low with some med, no anti- alias.. -

After reading the forums a bit, I'm a little worried about getting a dv6000t due to the whining noise. I'm used to a laptop with very good build quality and no noise (iBook G4), so I want to make sure I'm getting something just as good. Does this noise happen on pretty much all new dv6000t's? If so, would it be better to just wait until they are updated?
-
Mine is silent and runs very stable and fast. I do not understand how some do and others don't. Fit and finish is also top notch. I custom ordered through my company's EPP program. It was delivered 10 days late. But she is a sweet running machine. -

im thinking about buying a dv6000t, my previous laptop was a toshiba a70, it had many problems, ran crap, but worst of all it overheated a lot (turned itself off at a certain point to avoid damage). whenever it was repaired it would come back fixed but slowly the heat got worse and worse until it would overheat. Luckily we got an extended warranty with the laptop which says that if it is repaired 3 times it will be replaced with a similar priced laptop. Now its been repaired 3 times and they tell us it can be replaced, but im left with a fear of getting another laptop with the same heating problem. So does the dv6000t get hot, or does it's fans make a lot of noise? And also is there a difference between a core duo and a core 2 duo?
-thanks -
@skyline
"does the Dv6000t get hot?"
Like any computer, it won't stay at room temperature, but it stays at a healthy temperature, both internally and externally, and the temperature monitoring and response features are superb. You don't need to worry about it overheating. The warmest part externally is the left palm rest, just over the hard drive, but it never gets uncomfortably hot. If you purchase a 12-cell battery, the cooling is even better because the laptop sits up at a slight angle; I recommend it anyway, since the default battery is only 1-2 hours.
As far as the fans go: at 100% they are a little loud, but they rarely reach this point, especially in normal conditions. The PC monitors its internal temperature and adjusts the fans accordingly, meaning that usually they are not over 30%, and are totally silent.
Yes, there is a BIG difference between a core duo and core 2 duo. Numerical comparisons can be found all over online, but the improvements are obvious; the difference is essentially the same as comparing a Pentium III to a Pentium IV. the Core 2 Duo's are highly recommended, but luckily, both the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo use the same socket, so if you don't want to spend the extra money now and end up with just a Core Duo, you can upgrade to a Core 2 Duo later.
@johnri
The whining noise is no longer an issue; BIOS update F.16 fixes it. Any computer you buy now will come preloaded with 16, so you won't have the noise. -
Ill definitly buy this laptop if all goes well with having my current lemon replaced -

After months of research of my requirements, budget and brands I like; I am hooked on HP Pavilion dv6000 with either AMD Turion or Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB HDD.
I live in a city where average temperature is between 90F and 115F and summer is 11 months of the year. Air conditioning is not always available and I am mostly on the go.
- Will AMD, which is always notorious of its heat-ups, survive 12-16 hour running everyday or shall I opt for Intel.
- HP Pavilion dv6000 series comes without a latch and has a magnetic lock for the lid. When the lid is closed, its spring keeps it steady until about 30degrees and then it falls. If lid is not held but gently pushed from top, at 30degrees it almost slams down. It has a crystal bright screen, which is more susceptible to beaks than matt screens. Have anyone heard a screen damage case?
Have a wonderful day - Will AMD, which is always notorious of its heat-ups, survive 12-16 hour running everyday or shall I opt for Intel.
-
id go with the intel 2, just cause they own in the mobile industry > amd so far.

Amorak:
1. I have a Core2 and it stays quite cool. It has been getting warmer in my dorm room lately (around 80F) and they haven't turned the A/C on yet. I leave my laptop on 24 hours a day and my core temps stay consistently at 47C. On some weekends I also run my TV tuner card, which causes a noticeable amount of heat in the expresscard area of my case. I usually sleep with the TV on and my computer runs just fine like that all night.
2. The screen doesn't slam down hard at all, though I usually hold it. I suppose screen damage is possible, but not likely. -
i dont have a dv6000 but am planning to get one. But i have a lemon Toshiba which i frequently get annoyed at and slam down the screen so hard the back part of the laptop lifts up and becomes airborne lol. And thats a lemon laptop and it's screen hasn't been damaged. Im not sure what type of screen it is but i do know its HD. Can i please ask what the difference between all these different screens, brightview etc.
-
The dv6000 can have either a Brightview (glossy screen--like a desktop display) or a matte (less reflective) screen. If you buy a ready-built computer, such as in a retail store, it will invariably come with the Brightview screen. However, if you custom-order via HP's website, you can order either Brightview or matte.
Mine has the Brightview screen, and everything is sharp and color rich, but if you have windows behind where you are working, you may prefer matte. I like the Brightview, but if I could do it over I would custom order one with matte. My two previous notebooks had matte screens.
As far as one being easier to damage than the other, I have no idea. However, I do carefully close the lid because it will shut harder than I like if I'm not careful.
Bill -
I'm VERY happy with the laptop! (only thing was I had to modify the inf of the 158.18 drivers myself because the offical videodrivers2go is down).
-
I'm not sure if the glossy is the same but the matte is angle of view sensitive. But not too bad as I got used to it very quickly. After looking at the glossy ones my friends have at the office I am glad to be matte.
The last time I looked on the HP order site I did not see any other option but the bright view. You may have to do a phone order to go that way. -
@amorak
Both the amd and intel chips will reach very similar temperatures, but I am assuming that either choice will be dual core and in about the same price range. Obviously, chip with fewer cores or a lowr clock will be somewhat cooler (in general). As far as equivalent chips go, though, there shouldn't b much difference; mabye about 1-3 degrees. The point is: if one burns, the other will too; 1-5 degrees isn;t a big relative difference. Some good news; the Dv6000t has good cooling, with several vents on the bottom. As said several times before, the 12-cell battery helps by elevating the laptop and clearing the area around these vents.
You shouldn't need to worry about the screen getting bashed when the case closes; if you look closely at the PC, you will see several rubber-y spacers distributed around the screen. These keep a good .5-.7cm between the screen and the top case, ensuring that the screen never touches, much less hits with any force, the case. The brightview screen coating shouldn't make any difference, either; the only difference between matte and glossy is the thin coat of acrylic that covers the screen. The coat is present on both screens, but on the brightview it is polished until reflective. I have heard no cases of screen damage resulting from closing the case. -
So I just got my DV6000t and....should my ESC key be really loud? It makes a really loud click sound anytime it's pressed, compared to every other key on my laptop. Also, tapping ESC causes F1, F2, `, 1, and 2 to flex slightly. If I put any kind of pressure on it when I press it. that whole section flexes slightly. Is that normal? The loud clicking sound is really annoying. It almost sounds like it's rubbing against something, but it doesn't look like it...suggestions?
-
Knock on wood my unit has none of the problems reported here. None!
I must say that it can be done. I am one of the happy folks you hardly hear from here. For every problem child there are many, many, happy children.
I have to suggest to anyone with a new dv6000t that is not 100% should not hesitate to box it up, call them and say exchange or refund, make my day. You have 30 days no questions asked right?
The more this happens, the more consistent the quality control will be.
Again, mine was shipped with the F.16 BIOS. No whine noise, no keyboard flex or loud keys, no constant fan noise, no software or OS conflicts, the burner works great, fit and finish is top notch!
I'm not bragging, just letting you guys know it can be had. -
Yup, went to the local circuit city and tried the keyboard on their DV6000ts. Of all the fancy things that go into making a laptop, they screwed up the keyboard installation on mine. Figures.
-
Yep, that sucks. Good thing it's free replacement for 30 days, and you don't have to fill out a report or anything. I imagine that most other brands don't do this; they would probably laugh at a replacement request over a loose keyboard. you've gotta give it to HP; the QC isn't flawless, but the problems all get fixed for free...
-
Well fortunately I had an Everex sitting here that I was debating on...I liked the smaller HP size, but the Everex is cheaper with a 17" and go 7600...I told myself if the HP was perfect I was going with it. If it wasn't, the Everex is my backup plan. Looks like I'll be cracking open the Everex and giving it a go.
-
I wouldn't recommend that processor... ur better off with a intel. i had it and it would get ohh my goodness hot.. like to hot to keep in my lap hot.. Also it wasn't the fastest at installing apps, and other little things I wanted it to do ..
I had a dv2000 with the tl-50 and 1 gig of ram.. needless to say, I wasn't happy. sold it to my g/f and got a dv6375us with intel c2d and I love it....
good luck -

What exactly is involved in upgrading the HD? How expensive is it? Would upping from a 5400 RPM to a 7200 RPM HD make a good performance difference?
I've got the T5600 with 2 gigs of ram and it seems that it bottlenecks with the HD....
Anyways, does yalls downloading(from websites such as drivers and music) seem kind of slow? It just doesn't seem its as fast as it should be? Are there any tweaks or settings to check to change this? Could it also depend on my wireless internet and such?
On another note, our main home computer is a few year old dell running Windows XP. The router(linksys wireless G) and modem are connected to it through LAN, also our printer is connected directly to this computer. I am trying to set it up where i can hit print from my laptop(vista) and it will print out on the printer. I believe this is possible? I can see our other computer(main computer) on the wireless map, but cannot access any of the files from it or can i find the printer? HELP! -
As for the wireless, there can be so many variables between individual users like router and adapter types and the setups of said.
What router and adapter do you have? Try going in and find the setting where it allows you to choose what types of signals look for. Most will default to a,b, and g. Set it to "G-Only". This will free up bandwidth reserved for searching the other signal types. Its very hard to troubvle others wireless setups from a far.
As for mine it is very good. I have a good Comcast connection with on a Motorola SB1500 modem, and a Linksys WRT54G-Version 2.0 with the latest firmware, and the dv6000t has the IntelPro 3945 W\Bluetooth, running the latest IntelPROSet drivers. -

I have had my dv6000t for a few weeks now and I seem to have one minor problem. When I close the lid and let it sleep it sometimes wakes with the wrong display resolution. The icons and wallpaper image get bigger, etc. I can change it back to the right setting but I shouldn't have to. Think it's the video driver?

I am about to burn the recovery disks. Is it better to use DVDs? How many should it take? Does it matter what brand? (this is my first time creating recovery disks).
