If you need new drivers for the 7400 for vista or xp go here (these are hacked inf because if you use the normal drivers you will get errors since they are locked out by inf. These work great and greatly improve performance, just search for geforce go 7400 in their forums and see the benefit for yourself).

Antivirus Software:I am still waiting for my dv6000t, left China, on to Alaska, seems to be stuck in Indiana! delivery date tomorrow 4/18 hope it gets here....NY
anywho
What Antivirus software is good for Vista. I have licenses for Norton, but this latest ver. seems to have screwed up things on my XP desktop.
Took it out now using Kaspersky trial. Read about trendmicro (or something) and bit defender etc. Which goes in smoothly with VISTA? Who uses what?
TY -
The laptop comes with an unbound copy of Norton 2007--Virus protection, firewall, security monitor, and much more. Great software, especially considering it's free. It also works on Vista with no problems, which is nice, considering the disaster I experienced after trying to install Symantec 2006 ;(.
@therock
Yes, it's called a batterySeriously though, I haven't seen or heard of one from HP; some 3rd party company might make them though.

A much better source than drivers to go. -
Thanks for the $50 coupon idea! I was supposed to receive my laptop today and it is held up in customs in Indiana! So I called HP and complained and they credited my charge card $50...Exactly what my new laptop case cost! Free case now
So thank you so much for suggestion. I did call Fedex and they said they got the paperwork from HP for customs today so should get by Fri. just hope am home when it is delivered....moved appts around to be home today. And I ask how can HP be late (admittedly) with customs paperwork?...ok let me answer that myself...Because they can!!!

therock said: ↑I do not believe you went wrong with the 7200 CPU. It and the 4MB L2 Cache really shine.
I do large camera RAW file editing with PS CS2 and the CS3 Beta and it's great. The new NVIDIA driver from tweaksRus add a really nice improvement in that area.
Buyers guides recommend getting a better HDD after purchase because the after markets are better for the money.
If you do lots of on-battery usage you may miss the 12cell. Reports hare are the 6 cell is barley adequate.
But you got in at a pretty good rate, congrat's. If HP is late you may be in for a $50.00 coupon to spend on their site if you inquire about it the day it is supposed to ship. I got a nice new case with mine.
Drive it like a borrowed mule for the first 25 days! Don't forget to work the burner.Click to expand... -

I wonder if mine will most likely be delayed since I ordered it during a coupon period, so they must have a lot of orders to process. If it gets delayed in production and shipping, I wonder if it'll get to my college dorm before May 18th when I go back home. That would be the worst thing ever. -
Ordered mine on the 16th:
- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
- Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T5600(1.83GHz/2MB L2Cache)
- 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800)
- 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
- HP Imprint Finish + Microphone
- 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- FREE Upgrade from 60GB 5400 RPM to 80GB 5400 RPM
- FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
- 802.11b/g WLAN
- No TV Tuner w/remote control
- 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
- Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
(too bad I missed the 200$ off coupon, it expired early)
As of 4/18 the site says:
Order in production
(Estimated to ship on April 25, 2007)
Maybe it will ship earlier then expected -
First, they didn't give me a coupon, they credited my charge card $50 so I can use it for anything anywhere
Now as for the production mine got out early was supposed to be done on 4/18 and it shipped on 4/13 the hold up is in Indiana at customs (Fedex told me). I should have had it today. I hope customs gets a move on it. I don't understand why it doesn't go through customs in Alaska (first stop from China), afterall that is the US last I looked! -

The only real tweaks I made are:
The new Intel ProSet wireless drivers.(More configuration abilities and accurate connection signal meter)
The NVIDIA driver from tweaksRus.com. (All the bells and whistles)
And disabling the hibernate thing freeing up 3.8GB. (HDD real-estate) -
Is the drivers from tweakus better or the ones from laptop2go?

By the way to the people who got the laptop recently (as in this month), does it still come with the vista anytime dvd that lets you install a clean version without any bloatware (or will I need to just burn a copy of vista)? -

So i uninstalled it and will download what is the best free antivirus in my opinion, Antivir, which is better than Avast.
With the excellent firewall of the wrt54gl, spybot, A2, a regular online scan of Kaspersky and a remote mail opene rlike Ermove, you can go to the most infamous and less honourable places in the net (not that i ever adventure myself there, of course).
Apart from that, i think i made the error of installing the new set of the webcam drivers, it doesnt work better than before, but the wecam is now recognised as a "usb video" device...?! it even works worse.
Cant pick up any sound with the mics, dont know what to do, i have the vista Connexant drivers.
I would give a try to the tweakus drivers, but i'm not sure of the procedure under Vista: with XP i uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, restarted, cleaned with
Cleaner driver pro, restarted and installed the new ones; how do you do it here? maybe just uninstall restart and install the new ones without the Driver cleaner step? -

Yes, the 3 month trial of norton is actually free for life. Norton products have always been this way-- if you get an OEM license (like the one in the built-in version) then you're set.
@nsegative.
No; the Vista free upgrade policy ended a while ago, i.e. when Vista was released ;-). There is no way to make a "clean" os cd, and ived if there were you wouldn't be able to use the computer due to lack of drivers. The recovery disk (not recovery partition, it's a big waste) works fine. -

The feature set is expanded compared to the HP stuff.
The signal strength meter is more accurate. Before it would show 1 bar and say the signal quality was excellent but would not be enough to connect. Or when right next to you router it would only show 2 or 3 bars and say the same. Now a 1 bar signal reports poor quality and right next to the router shows all the bars and reports excellent.
Later.... -
Notice that got deleted form my post before you replied :/. what I meant was the ProSet configuration utility is not vista compatable, not the drivers. I've been using the drivers for a while too.

I have a question, why does it seem like the wireless cards in the dv6000t laptops suck? 2 of my friends have dells, and their laptops get more signals and better signals on access points than I do. I realize that all 3 use intel wireless cards, is it that the antenna is not put in a optimal position? Is there other wireless cards we can get to let us have better signal? Thanks

Hi there,
Could you please answer to my question as soon, as possible? I have to send an order this evening.
which one should I choose? It'll be a student laptop- some word processing and movie watching, quite a lot of photo editing, not much travelling.
1. Dell 1501
TL52
2x 512 DDR
120 @ 5400 rpm
15.4"
ATI x1150
Vista Home Basic
3yr warranty
2. HP DV6000E
TL50
2x 512 DDR
120 @5400 rpm
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150
Imprint finish, web cam, remote- not sure about all these, but probably they're all included.
Vista HP
1yr warranty.
I simply don't know which one to choose. Dell seems to have better build quality, better keyboard (no flex. DV6000's keyboard flexes as if it was an Acer/FuSi laptop) and touchpad (you can't see motherboard, when you press the mouse button) and it has 3yr warranty (this is the most important factor).
On the other hand, HP has multimedia buttons, a better LCD (I've spent some time comparing them) and Vista Premium (I had Premium with my previous laptop and I liked it very much).
So please, help me to choose.
(Dell 1501 seems to be better choice for now) -

1501 (as 1505) is not road ready. Actually, they are a bit afraid of the road, because lid scratches easily
-
To whoever is thinking about ordering the 6000T...don't be surprised if it gets stuck in customs in Indianapolis.
-
I must have said this twice before in this very forum, but w/e since people don't want to read back....
Since OEM norton products have no serial # or product key, they can essentially be installed on multiple systems without any way of Norton knowing. Each installation sets an arbitrary "subscription length" value (30 days) that, when expired, denies access to the liveupdate server. Norton subscription information is stored locally, not on the LiveUpdate server. Although the value itself is not modifiable, it is deletable. by uninstalling and reinstalling the product completely, the subscription is reset to its initial value of 30 days... therefore, the subscription is free for life provided you keep the install files or install disk and uninstall/reinstall the software whenever the trial period runs out.
As for the Dell/HP question...
It is a common opinion that dell's products have been losing quality and their performance/price ratio is shifting toward lower product value. Since Alienware was bought by Dell, many have had the same complaints about AW as well. A few cases do not a negative statistic make, but I would still be wary if purchasing Dell products, and make sure that the savings (if any) are worth the downfalls of the brand (low build quality, limited tech support, proprietary parts, etc.).
@goscottgo
I doubt many of us live in Indianapolis; you can't extend this claim to those of us living elsewhere, since none of us have had similar problems (to my knowledge). Blame your local customs office, not HP, and assume that it's an isolated case, not a recurring problem. Plus, I assume that HP gave you a $50 credit for your delay, which (IMHO, PJ) is more than enough to compensate.
@ruibing
Why the roxio software? The pc comes stock with a cd-burning suite (actually, it's roxio) that works great, at least for me. If not, there are pelnty of free softwares that perform fine too.
EDIT:
I just discovered the panel on the bottom of the dv6000t that allows access to the HDD. This surprised me//all of my other laptops required a total top-case removal to get to the drive. Another pro for this notebook, even though I already bought it -

Regarding the Indianapolis customs issue:
Actually, I currently have a notebook stuck at customs in Indianapolis and I live in Boston... there are many threads on this forum about how HP's shipments seem to regularly get stuck there. At least 4-5 of us on this forum are in this situation right now. I don't think this is necessarily HP's fault in all cases, but it seems they have a habit of misplacing paperwork. If you search for "Indianapolis Customs" on this forum you'll get more info, but either way I wouldn't base a decision on that. Even allowing for the customs delay I'll get the notebook in the timeframe that HP originally gave me. (but I'll admit it's frustrating to see it just sitting there on the Fedex tracking website). When I googled it, I also found multiple references to Apple notebooks being stuck in that same customs office for days. -
