    1. I think you can get a good discount at your college's computer supply store if it has one. I believe Microsoft also sells student versions of their office software at considerable discounts.

    2. I wouldn't bother calling the rep about a specific panel, since it's more than likely that he won't be able to guarantee anything. Though the Philips panels may be better in general, it really is all in the luck of the draw as far as the quality of YOUR panel when you receive it.

    3. I believe the Geforce 7400 should be able to play WoW at medium settings at least, with decent framerates. If it's too much money, then forget it. The GMA950 isn't all that great.

    4. Since you're a college student, I would advise you not to waste your money on a C2D. The main difference is an increase in FSB speed and 64-bit capability. The performance increase from CD is generally under 10% for most applications, and I don't think the price premium is worth it at this point.

One more thing, get Windows MCE if you can. When Windows Vista is released, you'll be eligible for a free upgrade to Vista Premium. :)

    Hey guys,

I just ordered one of these badboys and I'm glad to see that it's getting great reviews across the board. One question, how come a lot of you opted for the 6 cell vs the 12 cell battery? I got the larger one because I figured twice the lasting power, but is it super bulky or something? Owners with a 12 cell battery: what approximate amount of time does the laptop last on battery power? Thanks for any reply.

The 12 Cell battery obviously gets 2x the life of the 6 Cell as it is basically 2-6 Cells conjoined. The 12 cell is nice for typing on a desk as it elevates the back a bit, however my reason for not getting it is that it's somewhat uncomfortable to lug around. When I'm on my desk it's plugged in anyways so it doesn't really matter.

Agreed with airman and the slant is great for typing if anything. I normally get at least three hours with the 12 cell with wifi on.

Okay great, thanks for responding. Here's what I ordered a couple days ago for about $1150, and it's supposed to be built by Oct 13th:

    - HP Pavilion dv6000t CTO NB
    - Genuine Windows XP Home Edition
    - Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2250 (1.73 GHz)
    - FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen!!
    - 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
    - HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone
    - 2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB)
    - FREE Upgrade from 60 GB 5400 RPM to 80 GB 5400 RPM
    - FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
    - Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money

I couldn't believe the price I was getting on this system, everywhere else I looked with comparable specs was at least a grand more! Anyways, I leave on a vacation to Hawaii on the 18th and I chose standard shipping -- what are the oddsmakers saying as far as me getting the laptop in time for those 5 hour plane flights?? Anyone with an over/under or moneyline wager? :D

Haha lets hope you get lucky but I think HP is having some production delays at this time. Usually takes around a week to build so I think it shouldl make it. Might be cutting it close.

    Yeah, good luck Irish Armada--

I ordered mine on Sept. 15, with an estimated build time of Sept. 27. Sept 27 came and went, with me calling customer service 3-4 times from Sept. 27 to Sept. 29, with their systems reporting "no production delays" on the factory's side every time. Finally on the 30th, I (and HP customer service) got word notifying the obvious: that there were production delays, with the new promise being that my computer would ship no later than 1 week from it's original build date (that'd be Oct. 4). Well, finally today (Tuesday, Oct. 3) the dadburned thing shipped. It missed the mid evening flight out of Shanghai, but made the early morning flight, and is currently in Anchorage. The lady at Fed Ex said Friday before 10 am. I'm in California. Don't want to hope, but it'd be nice if-Alaska and me both being on the same coast an' all-if that puppy slid into my hands a little sooner. But, again, I ain't hoping.

That, I think, is what at the end of my little saga I'm trying to say to you:try not hoping ;)

Okay thanks for the reality check. I think I'm best assuming it won't be here in time, that way if somehow it does make it, I'll be pleasantly surprised rather than let down if it doesn't ... sounds like a decent strategy to me!

Also, I'm getting this laptop basically to replace by 5 year old desktop which now sucks, but still has a good sound system attached to it (big sub and speakers). Is there a way to hook this up to my laptop or do I have to buy a special "laptop only" speaker system? I mean what's the point of having great multimedia capability on a laptop if you don't have a great sound system to play the music with?

    Well, there is a God--

Just got my package not 15 minutes ago. I'm at work so can't really do anything with it right now, but I'm thankful nonetheless.

For my troubles, HP ended up upgrading my shipping to what amounted to overnight.

You see, Irish Armada, when you don't plan according to your hopes, you end up getting better than you could have ever dreamed of :)

I've read on the forum that somewhere on this site there's guides for reformatting the hard drive in the best way--

Could anyone direct me to one of these guides? I've not been able to find one.

You guys are lucky you already got yours with the good screen.

I placed my order on 8/30 and finally got it September 16th! I opened it up and it was worth the wait, only to find out that my screen was crap. It was a Chang Mei or something and horribly dim, so I had to send it back, and they had to make me another CTO with an expected build by date of October 10th and thats without delays. So If I am lucky I will have it by the 17th with standard shipping. What a crock.

Thank you HP Au for screwing us again... not only you took your sweetass time to ship these new C2D lappies to us, you also only ship the 1.6 & 1.8Ghz versions. (DV6113TX & DV6129TX).

Dogged hard again...looks like Asus is the go.

Hey all, I am about to purchase a dv6000t and have two questions:

    1) Do you all have any last considerations for me before I go ahead with the purchase?

    2) Is there a noticable speed and/or heat difference between these two CPUs which justifies the $175 difference:
    Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2050 (1.60 GHz)
    Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5500 (1.66 GHz)

    Thanks!

Well if anyone cares, it would seem that HP has been pulling off small miracles lately. My (replacement) dv6000t which had October 17th as the date of completion is now sitting in the Fedex lot in Shanghai already on the 7th! 10 days early I was impressed to say the least as the T7200 chip has been cauing delays and such. Now lets just see how long the 5-7 day Fedex shipping takes, that is once it actually leaves Shanghai anyways.

Oh, and Ibex yes there is one is the Core Duo and the other being the new Core (2) Duo. If I were you I would shell out the extra cash for 64 bit support and wider pipelines.

Well just an update for ya'll in case you were curious. I realized that I screwed up my custom order by selecting the Core Duo processor instead of the Core 2 Duo processor. Horsesh**! I called today to have them cancel my order since they can't just change the specs on my order mid-process (the CPU is already half-built) and they said they'll put the cancel order in but it takes 1-3 days to process so there's an outside chance that it will get shipped before the cancel order goes through. If that's the case, I'm just supposed to refuse delivery when it gets here and they'll credit my account back in full once the CPU gets back to them. So I'm going to reorder with everything the same except I'm getting the Core 2 Duo 1.66GHz (or maybe Core 2 Duo 1.83GHz -- any suggestions??) rather than the Core Duo 1.73GHz. Needless to say, I feel like an idiot for screwing this up in the first place -- definitely not going to have this laptop by the time of my Hawaii trip :(

But the customer service was very good and they even offered me $75 to not cancel the order (money straight to my account I think, not HP credit). Guess it's just going to be that much longer til I get my new laptop -- doh!!

In several of postings on this thread people have mentioned the manufacture of the screen on there laptop. Which mfg screen is better?

Well thats how you check for the screen. The Samsung (SEC) screen seems to be the worst one and the best seems to be Quanta (QDS) although i find LG Phillips fine.

    Hey Guys,

I am in India and those HP guys say they cannot upgrade the processor. Here is what I'm getting:-

    Hi, guys,

I just got my dv6000t. I met two problems:

One, maybe the battery is too loose. When I took it back from school, after several times of movement, I cannot turn the computer on(I have plugged the power line in). No response from the power on button. then I took the battery off and installed it again, then the button works. so weird.

another happened when I turned the notebook over and around, several times. Then I heard some sound inside the computer, near the DVD driver. it sounds like, some screws have left their original positions and moved to the direction you move the notebook. Did you guys have this problem? I am not sure whether I should call hp to open the computer for me to see what is inside.

    thanks.

I think the battery thing happend to me once but after I removed the battery like you did, I had no further problems. And about the dvd drive, I would go ahead and call HP to see what could be the problem since your still under warranty.

I'm leaning towards the DV6000 now instead of the compaq. At first the compaq was cheaper, but the warranty is cheaper and shipping is FREE on the DV.. guess I'll have to go with that.

Anyone have any guesses as to what prices and components will be in January/february?

    Battery Question

I've ordered the 6000t and upgraded battery from the standard 6 cell to the 12 cell, but now when I look at the web site image of the case, it looks like the 12 cell battery sticks down. This would seem to make the platform unstable.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the 12 cell versus the 6 cell configuration?

    Thanks,
    Wes

    wrahn--

All the accounts I've ever read on the 12 cell option are that people like the fact that it raises the laptop up in such a way that it makes typing that much easier (though I've found the keyboard very cool without this option) and further, no one has ever complained about an imbalance.

I wouldn't be interested in the 12 cell for two different reasons: 1.) I don't think it's a very pretty addition to an otherwise very pretty laptop and 2.) it adds an extra pound to an already borderline too-heavy computer.

But 'o course to each his own.

You will love your 6000t either way, when you get it--trust me :)

Did anybody run the PCMark05 tests on this baby. I ran the test after installing Media Encoder 9 and the system shuts down after doing 10 of the 11tests.

I am writing a review on this laptop and if somebody can share there PCMarks05 score screenshot than I would greatly appreciate it. I am sick of this problem and I cant find the reason for this issue. I definitely dont want to wipe off and do a clean install just for this.

    Nice job HP!

Awsome looking system. Mine has the AUO display. Great color, great depth...no complains! Don't know how this compares to other available displays. BrightView is very reflective however, so using it next to a window, for example, results in quite a reflection on the screen. Everything seems to be working properly, with no fan, cpu or DVD player noise that I have noticed. Even pretty good sound for a laptop.

As noted by others, there is a ton of "bloatware" installed. 24 desktop icons (and My Computer is not one of them). Obviously it is going to take some setup time to get things the way I want them. If anyone has any tips for removing the bloat without reformatting, I would appreciate it. Otherwise I would say my initial impression is very favorable. It seems to have right balance of power, performance and price.

If anyone has specific questions I will try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Uninstall the bloatware and run a registry cleaner program ( i use CCleaner) and check your startup programs and remove the unnecessary ones using MSCONFIG...this might fix the speed issue.

    HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One
Total:$1652.34 (before $130 MIR) was using 15% off coupon, is this a good deal?

-Ordered on Oct.12, got an email today (Oct. 18) that it is shipped. The original ship date was Oct. 20, but i got 2 days earlier. I mainly use this for encoding movies, a little bit of everything like graphic, sound, games...I read alot about this computer and hoping i will happy with it.

Can this possible to burning 2 DVD at the same time (1 internal & 1 external, at 4x)? How about while encoding 1 video and capturing another video (via firewire connection)without frames drop?
This is what i wanted to do but my previous desktop wouldn't let me do it, i will test it out. Thanks.

HP service rocks..they score in all departments... after sales, customer service, troubleshooting etc...I personally feel the chances of hitting a knowledgeable rep at first instance (thats my benchmark) is far better with HP than Dell...
