Got Windows 8 to install! In case any Googlers are trying to a solution to the same problem I had, the problem I had was that the installation would fail when it said "Getting ready 2%". The solution? Head to HP's support site, navigate to the page for your model, and then use their scanner tool to find if there's anything at all that they have available for you in terms of updates. Turns out I had minor updates for the fingerprint scanner, system buttons, etc. There's also a little guide they provide that recommended uninstalling the driver for the card reader that comes with the computer, so go ahead and do that. Went without a hitch for me after I did all that! :D

Hi, I recently wanted to overclock my 6770m in my dv6t-6100 because I just did a fresh install of win8. I downloaded the F.1B BIOS update from http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...dv7-6xxx-envy-14-2xxx-envy-17-2xxx-intel.html and set it to fixed gpu. Before I even downloaded MSI afterburner I decided to boot up a game (SWTOR) and everything seemed fine until I noticed I was getting around 65+ fps on all max settings except for low setting on shadows which was crazy because this is almost double what I was getting with dynamic settings (this is without overclocking or anything). I thought it was great until I noticed that every 3 seconds or so it would freeze for about a half second, and my fan was screaming. I checked the temp on my gpu and noticed that it was in the low 80s and climbing fast after less than 5 minutes of playing. I instantly exited and switched back to integrated gpu.

How would just switching to fixed graphics make me get higher fps and overheating problems? After switching BIOS back to dynamic everything is stable and smooth again, but I can't overclock of course.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks

Anyone have success with this on Windows 8? When I try to flash camolil's BIOS, it reboots (to install the BIOS upon boot) but instantly fails. Any ideas? Or do I have to return to Windows 7 somehow? o_O

I registered simply to reply to this post. This method works and it has saved me from blowing my brains out.

To help clarify any future readers. I had to format and reload the OS on my laptop which is the same model as the tutorial. Downloading and installing the AMD driver from HP after a reload will not work. By default, the graphics mode is set to hybrid or auto - the standard video drivers WILL NOT install properly when this mode is set. Furthermore, as described above, you cannot adjust this setting in the bios because HP sucks a big one. After using this tutorial, I was able to correctly install the video drivers and use the hybrid selection as described.

    I love you op,
    Joe

Sorry for the necro posting here, was thinking of doing this witch this weekend so I went ahead and read this whole thread.

According to Link 626 Catalyst 12.7 will let games use whatever card I tell it to run. But according to Joe's post it seems that standard drivers won't install properly without first installing the modded bios and getting rid of hybrid or auto mode.

My question is, can I just install the latest drivers at this point and be done with it? Or do I need to install the modded bio's and change the settings before that's possible? The main reason i want to do this is to play Diablo 3, which seems to be unreasonably choppy with this laptop even though I have it set to "high performance" in my current CCC settings (non modded at all)

Any version of driver should allow you to dynamic switch if you use the unlocked bios. You can change the option in bios any time and CCC will show correspondingly.

D3 lag/spike maybe cause by CPU in the 6z in my experience.

I'm similarly sorry if this is a bit of a necro-post, but considering I'm not looking to get too OT hopefully someone can help.
Is it possible to accomplish the mux based iGPU / dGPU switching with this modified BIOS in a similar way to what the dv6t folks got via HP's official bios update? Their complaint was rooted in the GPUs' software stack not being able to properly change and as a result HP seems to have abstracted an option at least available to us. I'm primarily looking to get a switch to the dedicated 6750m working independent of the (Catalyst) driver software so that the FOSS Radeon driver will work past the vgaswitcheroo issues which seem to persist. I posted a question dealing with some particulars of the FOSS drivers here:
    HP dv6z 6100 AMD/AMD vgaswitcheroo issues
mainly to see if anyone more involved with that OS environment knew. Given this NBR thread is more involved with this particular laptop and its associated BIOS mod, I thought I'd ask the other side of the question: is it possible to use the unlocked BIOS to set the rendering card from the BIOS proper, and get around these switchable issues? Catalyst seems to be able to switch even without the unlocked options, as I note in the openSUSE forum post (where I'm the OP). Here at NBR dreamonic seems to have had some luck (post #5261, top of the page):
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-amd-llano-6xxx-series-owners-lounge-527.html
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm currently trying the F.21 unlocked 740/840 overclocked BIOS.

Should be no problem, you can disable muxless switch totally if want in BIOS iirc. Though you probably want the non- OC, menu unlocked bios which should be more stable than OC one. It still soft brick quite often @least under windows.

Thanks, though I've already tried with video mode set to PowerXpress, Mux and fixed mode on/dynamic mode off. Though this works with some light stability issues under Windows, the FOSS radeon driver still can't flip the render output over to the dGPU. I've thought about specifying in the X Server config file which PCI lanes are for each device, but given that the both GPUs use the same radeon driver the configurations end up looking more or less identical.
I know this isn't the place to ask about trouble with the FOSS driver though, which is why I'm trying to get what dreamonic had working in selecting M92 or Madison under Discrete Gfx module. Unfortunately when I choose either option the laptop only uses its integrated graphics. Maybe there are other options that need to be set too, like the grayed out primary gfx adapter option at the top? I think if this BIOS could let me emulate what the dv6t crowd got officially most of the issues would be solved.
