correct. both the 2D Envy 17 and the DV7 1080p flavor (61xxx models and up) have 72% color gamut displays. We know this because

    1. HP tells us that the color gamut in both the 2D and the 3D Envy 17 is 72%
    2. the 1080p panel now shipping with the DV7 crosses to a device who's OE published specs state 72% gamut.

Cool. But the dv7 is "matte" where as the Envy is "glossy"? I honestly didn't see the glossy nature of the Envy but then again I only had for like 2 days (most of it was spend studying for my MCAT lol) so I may not have been looking at that part too much....

How could you not notice it if you stared it at it for two days?

I returned my souped up DV6T for the ENVY 17 3D, and it was worth it. The matte finish on the DV6T wasn't nearly as good as the one on my old 2009 MBP 17, it was sort of half way there but I guess good enough. Would I rather take that matte over the gloss? Yup, but I'd still pick the Envy overall.

I already just mentioned I was preoccupied with more important thing. I only turned it on a few times to see how gorgeous the actual screen was and checked for dead pixels. Then I put it in my room so it wouldn't distract me. I then started looking at perhaps buying a Kingston SSD and that's when I looked at the actual laptop again and saw a hardware issue.

I am in the same camp with others here regarding the matte vs glossy issue. I would always prefer a matte finish (all of my laptops in recent history had matte screens), but the other benefits of the Envy 17 3D were hard to overlook when there was very little price difference. I do wish the Envy had the 160 GB SSD option, but again the supposed build quality, graphics card, wireless card and other features pushed me over. It was a hard decision though, and depending on the hour of the day, I might still be envious of the DV7T options (no pun intended).

While I played with several DV7Ts in the store, my local stores did not carry the Envy. Mine ships Sept. 13, so I'll be excited to see what exactly I bought. :)
