On that new " industrial" design.

I too saw that wording. I think that really is a play on words. (To imply robustness, the unit being powerfully built; sturdy.)

To me if they were doing an industrial design, that would mean to me using a upper and lower housing made of a magnesium alloy instead of "plastic.

Magnesium alloy case being a big plus to keep the LCD from getting damaged for example if something is dropped on the lcd lid.

Another thing when doing a true industrial design is that you don't make the item a fingerprint magnet!!!! Seeing how the 17 inchers are mainly for desktop replacement use do the lid up "special" , but do the area around the keyboard in a material /finish that hides fingerprints.

And making the air intakes, the vents side mounted. My current dv8000t has the air intake on the BOTTOM of the unit, right were your left leg is...

One thing that I noted during watching one of the flash demo's was the wording "surface sophisication" when talking about the surface treatment given the unit. Again a play on words... and for people that care more about the "inside" of the computer, it makes you wonder what they consider important. (I.E "looking good", vs durability, robustness, performance.)

PS: I currently own a dv8000t and am considering the dv9000t when it is released. Still not crazy about the housing, looks nice and all, but I'd prefer a housing made out of Magnesium alloy like the 17 inch DELL units use.

Torn between a DELL 1705 with the 7900GS, it already having a DVI out port with a 3D ,2005 benchmark of 6,400 out of the box, vs the HP with the 7600 gpu with a benckmark of about 3,400?

HDMI port being a big plus for us that what /need to be able to hook the unit up to current big screen tv, plasma's, projectors... all current units on the market requiring a HDCP signal to be added into the DVI data stream to make the output HDMI.... big screen's etc needing that HDMI signal..

Why HDMI? What you need to know before going digital

    http://www.cnet.com.au/hometheatre/accessories/print.htm?TYPE=story&AT=40004563-39028666t-10000049c

    What is HDCP?
    Why is it important?

I finally got an update e-mail from HP, my dv9000 is delayed till Monday (was supposed to ship last thursday), but they gave me $50 for the inconvenience... I'd rather have just had the laptop this weekend though, guess one more weekend won't kill me.

Ender-01, please let us know when your dv9000 finally ships! I'm a little nervous that mine will get delayed too, because when I ordered it, the estimated build-date wasn't until 13 days later! I'll be so angry if I wait all this time only to find out that it will be delayed farther!

I ordered mine and it also got delayed, but it finally shipped out today. I ordered 64x2 2.0ghz, 2gb ram, 160mb(80x2) ultrabright screen, bluetooth.

on another question, how do you clear off all the junk(extraneous software) and start clean with all the drivers? I don't see any drivers on the hp website. I would like a clean machine from the start.

When did you order yours, if you don't mind me asking?

To remove the bloatware, go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

I ordered mine on the 10th. When it failed to ship on the 17th they gave $50 coupon so I bought a backpack case for that amount. Now it is in transit.

So mine shipped out this Monday like they said, but of course, it's held up. It's in IL or something, I didn't realize they come out of China, so since it's international, they can't update my tracking info too accurately for me. It was supposed to arrive yesterday. No such luck, it's been stuck waiting for customs to clear it for god knows how long! I hope it arrives today or tomorrow, but based on it's location (IL) that may be a little optimistic.

I just got my dv9000z, it's still brand new in the box (just opened it up to take pics and make sure it works) and im going to be selling it and getting a 14". I'll try and prepare a listing for it here. notebookreview.com gets first crack at it. compared to the dv8000 the quality is in another league.

oh, so here's the first photos ever taken of it: http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h86/flucks23/

The touchpad photo is especially nice ;)

i took pics of the bios for proof of the specs for when i post the for sale ad, but i never loaded windows (would have had to enter a user name and all that)....so, initial thoughts, without having actually used the laptop, just look and feel.

it's definitely a classy looking machine. the design makes the dv8000 look 5 years old in comparison. they got rid of the tacky contrast of the shiny plastic around the keyboard. instead the interior is all a soft satin with just a little bit of shine. they also got rid of the annoying blue LEDs all over the place. There are soft blue backlights for all of the buttons that are really precise. the cover is glossy black, and the graphical pattern is no where near as pronounced as HP shows on their website....from a couple feet away it just looks pure black. it's more rigid with less flex than the dv8000. the top cover is either thicker plastic or has a metal frame to better protect the screen...this is just a guess by pressing down on the center of the lid, where the dv8000 is really flimsy.

    no theres no HDMI

i just decided id rather have a smaller laptop and an external LCD than a 17", so im looking at an asus. but if i had to stick with a 17" it would be this one for sure. i do still have my dv8000 though.

Same deal. It's in NY now, actually was there friday. Was hoping for a saturday delivery, but Fedex says it'll be here monday morning by 10:30am... which does me no good as I will be working, so Monday night it is. It's a good thing shipping was free, 'cause it wasn't worth a $ in my opinion.

Thanks for posting those pics, too bad about the HDMI, but like I said I personally have no real interest in it myself, though for people who want it, I can't understand why they don't have it in.

YAY! I finally got it today!!

So far, I like it. Though, it's a little slower to boot than my dv8000t was... And I'm not a fan of this smaller left shift key, but everything else seems okay so far!

    And I haven't noticed any keyboard problems yet! Hopefully I won't! :D

    So far so good.

I miss the latchless screen of the dv6000z. I loved just shutting the top and going. I guess the weight of the 17in was too much. Wish they'd engineer it in. The screen is very nice, the casing is elegant if you keep the fingerprints off. They provide a wipe (I guess knowing the problem) You wife might not mind it on the coffee table.

Quick note -- the quick setup instructions show the HDMI port but there is an asterik next to it. At the bottom it says "select models only" whatever or whenever that is.

So I had it out with HP support the other day about why there was no HDMI port on my laptop. Both the support guy and the lady at hpshopping were at a loss and didn't know why it shipped without one. According to them, it's supposed to be a standard feature.

Then they guy told me to try to pop off the cover over where the port should be. I told him it was probably only possible with a knife, and that it would damage the case. He said "go ahead, we'll cover it" so I went ahead. Of course there's just a hole back there. So today Fedex picked up my now-damaged laptop, and a new one, supposedly with HDMI, is on it's way. I also made a hundred bucks on the deal because the prices have gone down. Hopefully it will be worth the extra week to get my laptop.

looks like the early adopters are getting ones without HDMI, and then it became a standard feature less than 2 weeks later. i can think of a couple explanations for that. not cool at all...

Well, the laptops are built in China, Hp tech support is mostly in India, and hpshopping's sales reps work out of Nova Scotia. So you can see why there might be bad communication.

I'm clueless and I have no Idea what an HDMI port is, but was I supposed to have one on my dv9000? Can someone please give me a brief description of what one is?

Kobax, is the part he told you to pry off a little black rectangle? Because I have one of those, and it looks like something was supposed to go there...

    ok, I'll bite

HDMI (high definition mutlimedia interface) is sorta like DVI + s/pdif (but better), if you dont know what any of this is, you probably dont need it, in fact if you dont know what HDMI is you probably dont need it. It should include HDCP, but not necessarily, which will COULD allow high deinfition disk (blu ray or hd-dvd) playback.

Confused yet? Don't worry, I think everyone is... on some level at least. But wait, there are different versions of HDMI (1.0, 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3) the next adding more features than the last and in order to take advantage of any of the functionality you need to have a display (and A/V receiver or pre processor for the audio part) that accepts HDMI.

Oh, but don't forget HDMI is somewhat compatible with HDMI (in the RGB colorspace anyway- DVI does not do yPbPr and is limited to 8 bits per channel). There are also some resolution restrictions (if you want to stay in spec) when accepting HDMI in.

The moral of this little story is:

HDMI standards in CE devices are still being worked out.

HDMI holds HUGE potential on the PC.

So far the few PC offerings have not delivered on this potential.

In order for a PC (or laptop) to take full advantage of HDMI's potential you need "all sorts of sh*t" to happen at once. My take is, that is not going to happen for a while.

    -

Personally, I would be happy with 8ch 24/96 (or 192) PCM audio over hdmim which would be a huge step forward in digital audio transport, but.... whatever.

Was that email to the support guys or to the shopping guys or to someone else? Everyone at hpshopping seems convinced that it should be included. But I'm almost 100% positive that when my replacement gets here, it won't have an HDMI port either, despite their reassurances. Someone somewhere is giving out bad information.

But at least the price went down a hundred bucks!

    hi,
to the dv9000 owner. i am very interested in the dv9000. But what's even more interesting to me are the core and memory timings of the Geforce Go in the Dv9000. Has anyone got this information?

A few things on the dv9000z. I loaded Vista 64-bit RC1 on it. It ran somwhat faster, but the driver for the Go 7600 is not available yet. So I really can't do much with it until that driver is available. Premere Element 2 doesn't work with it. Maybe because of the lack of video driver.

The other thing that concerns me is when I put the laptop on my bed and work with it. The processor gets too hot and the computer shuts off. I try to restart but nothing works until I let it cool down. Then I can restart and it works fine. Maybe the cooling system needs better ventilation.

On the side, did anyone notice that the HMDI Port is no longer listed in the 9000z model, but is listed on the new 9000t (intel 2 core duo) model

Well, thats to be expected since the fan air intake vents on most laptops are located beneath and when they are blocked naturally it will tend to overheat. Also bed surface acts as an insulator so there will be some latent heat build up which can also cause the cpu to shutdown quicker.

Ditto on that. My work computer is a crappy gateway, and when I set it on the bed for longer than 30 seconds or a minute, it starts heating up and the fan comes on. Has never shut down, though. It gets up to 60-65C and then falls back.

If you listen to the fan while it's sitting on the bed, you'll hear it working harder, like a vacuum stuck to a rug (because, basically, that's what's going on). Pick it up and you'll hear it calm down.

So I ordered mine, and it's going to be here (or at least shipping on) the 14th. A couple of questions:

    1. Does HP have a clue how to list accessories for their laptops, or is it me? It seems that you have to do a lot of research to find out if a particular battery/adapter works with a given laptop. Do they have a way to say, "I have a dv9000z, what can I get for it?" and only return accessories that will work on the dv9000?

    2. Anyone use the expansion bay xb3000? My wife has the xb2000 for her Compaq, and she likes it, however, I would appreciate any opinions. :)

    3. Is there a cheaper place to get the hard drive bracket? I need to get one, as I only got one hard drive in the order. Yes, I was being cheap, and looking at hard drives that cost $150 for a 120GB...

    4. Does anyone know when HP will have 64 bit drivers? I am looking to put Vista 64 (I have Technet, so it's legal) on there as soon as possible, and I want my customers to say something catchy, like "Oooh, that's neat, when can I get that?"

Thanks for any help, and I'm looking forward to the week after next.

    Jeff

HP told me they will have the 64 Bit drivers for Vista out when it officially comes out. They may have it sooner and they said they would notify me when it is out by email.

I have Vista RC-1 legally through a company I am associated with. There are three drivers that are not in Vista RC1 They are the peripheral drivers of the smartcard, and MM readers and of course the video card.

So it is hard to judge the look of Vista without the video driver. The Standard VGA driver of Vista works and looks OK, but not sharp and no memory.

Generally Vista 64 bit is very fast on the 9000z, but I couldn't test video demanding apps, just Office apps and internet stuff. The screens for these change back and forth instantaneously.

I can sign up for office 2007, but don't want to till the video driver is out.

PS thanks everyone for their responses to my overheating problems.

Yeah, when I read my post, and your reply, I realized that I was implying that there are people getting it illegally, and while that may be the case, I guess I shouldn't post on a non-related group, right after looking at all of the peoiple using torrents to "share" it.

I am going to put the 64 bit version on there, as well as XP-64.

Now, the waiting is the hardest part...

    ;)

Just ordered this notebook from TechDepot at Office Depot. After rebates, tax, shipping etc. I'll pay $697. Out the door though, it was $1027. Hope this helps.

planning of getting the HP DV9000z deal from OD too. Is that deal a good price?

I'm thinking of just getting the basic configuration and only do these two upgrades:

    + $50 1680x1050 Resolution
    + $45 Webcam with Mic built-in
+ $40 1GB of Ram (I hope that extra $25 rebate will not be rejected)

I just leave the Sempron processor as I only will use this laptop for web browsing and email. I really like the large 17" screen on this laptop. Is it worth it to spend more money on the TL-50 or TL-52 processor?

    thanks

For web browsing and email, a Sempron will most definately be sufficient. The Turion will be faster but not worth the extra $$$ compared to the extra speed.

well the base price of the DV9000z has dropped to $499 AR (3-day sale at OD). I might use the savings to upgrade the processor.

    thanks
