To replace a laptop lcd screen they don't need your HDD. If I were you I would send it in for repair and take the HDD out.

I tried calling smartmicrousa to find out which monitor I should purchase to install in my dv6700. At first the lady was like, well you computer wouldn't be able to support it. Then I was like well I know someone who had upgraded his 17" monitor in his laptop and it worked just fine. She still didn't know what to recommend for me to use from the LG LP154W02 series because there are 12 different models to choose from. She did talk to their "Tech Support" but she said they said they wouldn't know what to use. So can anyone help me out for to figure out which monitor I would need to buy?
-
1: this is where things get tricky. what i did was open my laptop first.
2: took the model number of the one that was in there.
3: then started with what would be the factory replacement model.
4: then start crossing the models and looking for what the numbers meant.
it would seem that the 8400 and 8600m gs use the same video connector found on most dv9000/dv9500/dv9700 and some if not all dv6700(unconfirmed though) series from what i have seen around the net.
out of the 12 models you seen, probally half of them will work. (dont quote me on this) reason being. the end numbers usually define matte/glossy/high end/low end/1920, 1680 or 1440 res/a few years old model or last years model upgrade/bright view with two inverters or single & video connector type. and it might not even be an lg model that goes in there, it could be an auo model.... -
-
Also before you did your upgraded did you open up your computer once to get the monitor model number and a second time to do the actual upgrade once you had ordered and received the monitor?
Edit: By the way I found from looking at the website that they don't offer any WSXGA+ monitors that are 15.4" and are manufactured from AUO -
yes, i opened mine the first time to get the model number and see how hard it would be to change it.
http://www.lcds4less.com/faq.shtml
and if you scroll down to the bottom here it says...hp compaq bright view, click the link.. it will take you to a 15.4 in 1680 x 1050 inch screen.

auo was just a possibility of what could be put in place. my original 17in was an auo screen replaced by an lg.
this site has some useful information on screens.
and just because it shows an hp part number.... it is not an hp screen, but that number translates into and lcd maker part number. -
http://www.gblcd.com/lcd/tft_lcd_panels_part_ref1.htm
now this will give you some kind of idea how the screens work between different manufactures.... looks pretty crazy, but you'll get the jist of things
edit: i just did a seach for HP and went from there. mine wasnt in there -
What was the model of the screen that was in your laptop originally? How did you end up deciding what screen to buy for your laptop? -
model number : b170pw03 v4
au optronics
another way is to take a picture of the back of your screen where the video connector is. i counted the little marks on it and tried to find another screen matching what mine looked like from the back. and i think there are even a few post saying something about dells having the same types of screens in them as well, if that is the case, then that would make upgrading the dv series easier to accomplish. dell has a reference number for their hi res screens, while the dv line only goes as high as 1680. and just like i mentioned earlier in my post. they told me it would not work but if i was willing to try, then that was up to me. i was willing to take the loss if it didn't, but i felt it should work fine. lucky for me.... it worked fine. else i would have sent it back and taken the loss on restocking fee and shipping and went with the 1680. -
johnksss,
HELP! This panel has a built-in inverter!!
If I got the same piece as you (I ordered and received an LG LP171WU1 (TL) (A3) from SmartMicro USA), the inverter is integral to the panel. I see no way to plug in the inverter cable on this panel since there is no plug for the HP original plug to fit into...
Are you certain that your part number was correct? Of course, noone who sells panels has pics posted of the actual panel you're ordering...
I attached some pics...any tips/advice you can offer, please do!

1: take off all them brackets. looks like you have 4 sides of them, including
the one holding the inverter.
2pen up your display and take it apart. as you take it apart, put the brackets from your old display to your new one.
3:the lcd will plug right into the origial inverter.
4: your video cable will plug right into that lcd with no problems, as will the inverter.
5:from this point, you should be able to test it before you put the bezel back together. -
Thanks john...did you disconnect the panel's inverter and just reuse the HP inverter?
The issue is that this replacement panel isn't able to be stripped down any further...and there's only one screw in the frame for the inverter, but removing it won't free the inverter.
Any ideas? -
thats correct mike. just save that inverter for a raininy day take note how you unplug the one in the bezel though...dont want to cross the wires up.
ill be around for a few hours so if you need any help, im here. -
-
matter of fact...take some wide angle pictures so i can see the sides and bottome with the screen sitting up right as if in your computer. you might be able to just fit it in as is. mine didnt have that inverter bracket
-
Here's a couple shots of the front of the panel...the first one is a low-angle frontal, the second, a full front (as it's laying on my desk)...

does the top piece come off? does it have two very small screws in it?
-
No...the metal frame on the LG panel doesn't come off...the only visible screw is on the inverter panel.
I wonder if a change in the PN is to blame? -
There are no screws on these panels and to take that panel away, you will need to unfold the fasteners... That's what I have done with mine to fit it in 8710w. It was the same part number as johnksss mentioned in his replacement posts.
-
that's what im thinking...because that housing doesnt look like mine.
did you take a look at the link i posted? -
Yeah- I actually used that as my guide to get into the panel in the first place.
The part I got can't be the same as yours if you didn't have a built-in inverter. Are you certain of the part number you received? -
-
well, if it's the wrong one...at least check to see if it will show the video....
-
I ordered from them as well- using your part number, and that is what they sent (and the stickers on it confirm your part number and that LCD match).
And no- I get no video- though I didn't try circumventing the integral inverter in my trial. (and with that inverter built in, I don't see there being enough room to stuff the HP inverter in there with it.) -
well, i just took my screen apart and i just looked at the model number.
LG LP171WU3 (TL) (A3) -
now i see what i did wrong... sorry mike...it's a 3 not a 1
LG LP171WU1 (TL) (A3) -
DOH!!
And mine is the WU1...OKAY...so now on to Smartmicro and get an RMA to swap 'em!
Just to confirm- your screen is WU3 and has no integral inverter? -
on page 4 of this thread, i took a picture of my screen and it infact says wu3
-
Well, that explains it in full! Wrong number gives wrong part...Unfortunately
-
yes...indeed...i went back and corrected the other wrong numbers, but if you need my help with returning it...pm me. i do apologize!!
-
Funny how a part number generates a specific part, eh?
Oh well...I'll request the RMA and deal with this once I get back from bike week! -
-
-
So LP171WU3 (TL)(A3) is the one to get right?
-
-
well look what i found.... wonder just how long this was floating around.
check out the screen upgrade.

Well I think I'm about ready to upgrade my screen. I have a dv9700t CTO - this should use the same model screen as the one you bought, correct? And did you find any places that sold the same model screen for a lower price after buying yours?
-
not really a lower price, but then i was looking for one with a dual lamp. -
Is having a dual lamp that important? Do you feel like the current screen isn't bright enough?
-
edit: i dont think they make one in a 17 1920x1200. i think i found one. going to have to wait till tomorrow to see if it will work. -
You guys must have eagle's eyes.... For me, dot pitch less than around .25 mm is too small. What's the use of having so many pixels in such a small physical area? Out of watching a movie at full resolution, everything else will be too small. Changing dpi is not good, only text is affected and things lose harmony. Anyway, it's all a matter of taste...
-
i use about 7 different windows at a time. plus side by side viewing. and the laptop is right in front of me.... besides...i had to match my 24 inch screen for my desktop...lol -
-
is it possible to customize this on HP canada?
-
sometimes when im browsing the text gets too small so i just zoom it in using firefox -
-
Fx 3 Beta's zoom is way different from 2.0, unfortunately. In the new version, pictures also zoom... and when their resolution can't handle it, they get all choppy. I wish there was a way to just zoom text and not gfx. -
So I make the purchase today. I have a dv6700tse and I opened up my laptop the other day to see what model my lcd panel is. I found that it is a Samsung LTN154X3-L01 and just decided to look up this model on smartmicrousa.com. To my suprised, on the listings for Samsung screens I saw LTN154U-L01, which is WUXGA. Since they both have the "L01" model, I am hoping that it should work just fine. Do you guys think it should work just fine too? Well, I will keep you guys posted when it comes in. In the mean time, let me know what you guys think.
