Yes mine was left at my door with not signature. and I had sent it of Feb 28 and they had it Mar 1. What also had me mad about the whole thing was I requested to be updated and not one time was I emailed or called except on Thursday from a automated call about it being shipped and the tracking number, but I had called an hour before to get all that..
-
I've only seen people getting the asus tablets earlier, I think because more people have the DV laptops it takes longer for them to ship the CQ56 laptops.
-
yeah.. i am probably going to try to sell this laptop just to get some money if we move to a different apt. I will have some money for a washer.. I replace my laptop with a desktop that my fiance built for me.. and I have a netbook i use.
-
Most people who bought the tx1000 got it because it was a tablet. The asus is also worth a couple hundred more than the compaq, and since alot of people are taking about selling them anyway this is a huge factor. Mine seems to run pretty good so far, although its going to take over $200 in upgrades to make it comparable with the tx1000.

*standing ovation*
About my prior post, yes I meant to contradict myself because as much as I want to stand by principle, I'd give in if say HP came out with something really nice that the competition doesn't have. I still hate HP/Compaq though.
My Vostro 1700 qualified to be sent in but I chose not to under suspicion of incompetent techs futzing with my out-of-warranty laptop. Replacing the 8600m gt if (when?) it fails only costs $30-50 from ebay and I'd rather replace it myself than be without a laptop for up to 2 months turnaround time.
By my calculations, my laptop runs factory default hardware for 3 years at which I'd have to replace the battery (9-cell $35), ac adapter ($10) and maybe video card ($40). An extra $85 to have a laptop last 6 years doesn't sound so bad after all. -
Thanks for the standing ovation.
I agree with your logic on dealing with your out-of-warranty Vostro yourself. I'd do the same thing. I've always been able to squeeze 5 or 6 years of useful service out of my Acer and Dell notebooks and self-built desktops. I've never been able to do that with an hp notebook. My wife's dead Pavilion was the third hp turd in our household. The CQ56 will be the fourth and last. -
If you are thinking of selling and are lucky enough to fetch $299 for your brand new CQ56 on feeBay or Craigslist but don't want to spend any extra money for something better, you can buy an old but rock solid Latitude D620 for the same price. It's from the same era as our defective hp computers. If you were satisfied with how your dv-series Pavilion performed, this unit will do just as well. No 17" screen if that's what you had, but the magnesium alloy case on these machines were very nice.
If you're interested in ditching your junky little CQ56, here's the review and here's where you can buy them.
I had one of these machines at my former place of employment and they are very well constructed business class computers. The standard hard drive is too small for a home user that saves a lot of music and video files, but if you kept your SATA hard drive from your defective hp, it will be a direct replacement for the standard 60GB drive in this system. -
Just wondering could the asus be able to dual boot and run android software?
-
Of course it could , but better option IMHO is dual boot with moblin (new version is called meego) . About android Hardware List - Android-x86 - Porting Android to x86 - Asus EEE Mt101t - full support.
-
Just sent my DV6000 for the great exchange. Hope Santa will get my CQ 56 to me by Christmas.
-
Thanks for the info. I will be sending mine in tomorrow.
-
Thank you Mr Fox!! That is a great idea and the fact that the HD is a direct replacement is nice too. I was wondering about what used notebooks might be a good replacement already and just hadn't done the research. Would be nice to find a 17" inch screen as I had a dv9xxx before.
Maybe if anyone else has some good options for used notebooks around 300$ that would have good longevity and better performance that would be cool to see your input... -
I personally would prefer a refurbished one with 1 year warranty. Some of those are available at Amazon.com or Buy.com from time to time. Another good source is Dell Outlet at dell.com/outlet. I subscribe to Dell Outlet promotions at
https://ecomm.dell.com/myaccount/subscription/subhome.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&source_id=10000 2
They frequently have 15% or 20% discount coupons off outlet prices.
Currently the cheapest 17" has the following specs at $479.
I've seen this model as low as $429 with a slower processor earlier.
Inspiron 17R - N7010
Processor: Intel Core i3-370M Processor (3M cache, 2.40 GHz)
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
Inspiron 17R - N7010 Laptop
320 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
3 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
8X DVD +/- RW Drive
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
It's probably very hard to get a 17" for $300ish but $429 with a 15% off coupon would be like $365+taxes. With a one year warranty and fairly new technologies it comes with, it's not a bad deal.
I was lucky to have gotten a Studio XPS 435MT desktop for $579 plus 15% off. Dell has since raised the price on that one.. -
That's a great deal and overall a better computer than the CQ56. Shopping the Dell Outlet is also good advice.
Anyone not completely familiar with Dell's product line should bear in mind that the Inspiron is Dell's budget product family. The Inspiron series are good computers and have more modern looking aesthetics, but they are not built as rock solid as the Latitude business class machines. If you browse Dell's online store you can get a better understanding of what each product family represents in terms of quality. -
I need some help on making a decision, I have a Compaq Presario V6000 that was approved for the replacement.
The laptop works fine except for the wireless function so I use either a gaming adapter or a USB Wireless adapter, and the s video out does not function.
Other than that it has never given me a problem, I have a laptop cooler that I put under the unit since the day the wireless stopped working .
The laptop and cooler have been on 24/7 for the last 2 years which is why I think it lasted this long.
My question is this a COMPLETE FAILURE JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN ?????
or do you think I can get another year or so out of it.
I only paid $299.00 for it new (demo) but I really like it.
Should I Keep It Or Get The Replacement ??????
Thanks to any and all that can guide me to the right choice. -
Get the replacement. Even though the CQ56 is crap, it will probably perform as well as your Compaq in its current state. As you only spent about $300 on it, you are probably one of the few people who aren't getting totally screwed on this deal.
-
I had the same model, the compaq v6000, and first the wireless failed, then about 6 months later I ended up with the black screen of death. My laptop lasted more than 4 years. -
I second the motion.
-
There's no question your laptop is a complete failure just waiting to happen. What nobody here can tell you is when. OTOH, with the CQ56 you receive a one year warranty. Not bad.
Your use of a cooler and the fact you did not cycle your laptop on and off has probably extended its life. On/off on/off means expand/contract expand/contract which is not a good thing.
Bottom line I would probably send in the laptop, if it were me, and grab the CQ56. -
Thanks folks for your input, I was hoping someone would say that the wireless and video out failed so that should be the end of the failures.
Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case
I hope a few others with this model would comment just so I can be sure.
Thanks for the tip on reboot (restart) I only do it If I have to or to clear the ram I guess that's another reason it lasted this long.
I know I am a late comer to this forum, I wish I had found it sooner !!!!
I was not even notied by HP or NVIDIA about a class action suite and I bought the laptop from a major store.
I know it's late and I did not contribute anything for the nVidia Class Action Fairness Hearing on this forum but i still would like to thank ALL that did their best to fight for everyone involved.
Even though I know I have a lowend laptop compared to some, It still pisses the hell out of me that HP and NVIDIA can get away with this!!!!!
-
Copy of an E Mail I sent to CEO of HP
To: Léo Apotheker
After Finding Out About The Replacement PC That Is Being Issued Under The Class Action Suit I Would Like You To Be Aware That Myself And My Family And Friends Will NEVER Again Purchase An HP Or NVIDIA Product Of ANY KIND In The Future !
In Addition Whenever Me Or My Family Sees A Potential HP Customer Looking At Any Of Your Products In A Store I Will Happily Tell Them Not To Purchase An HP Product And Tell Them About The Class Action Suit And Show Them The Documentation !
In Addition I Will Constantly Share My Experience With HP Whenever I Am On Line, In Chat Rooms, And Posting On As Many Forums That I Can.
As A CEO Of HP You May Be Thinking "How Many People Could One Dissatisified Customer Speak To And Convince Not To Buy An HP Or NVIDA Product(s) ?
To That I Say You Have No IDEA But The Company That You Head Will Find Out Soon Enough.
Being Unemployed I Have PLENTY Of Free Time !!!!!!!
I NEVER Wanted A New PC All I Wanted Was The One I Bought From HP FIXED.
A VERY DISSASTIFIED Customer
WITH A BIG MOUTH
(As You Will Find Out)

I do I.T. for a very big County Gov Office.
I have already started telling people not to get HP's and state that HP's "support and product quality" as main reasons not to purchase.
Trust me, all other manufactures and Mac's are getting my vote
-
You are very lucky that your V6000 lasted for so long. My $450 V6000Z died shortly after a year(the wireless card died in about 6 months) but my dad certainly did not use any laptopl cooler even in a hot summer. He sometimes forgot to turn if off overnight, too..
I highly suggest you go with the CQ56 though you will lose the card reader and the expansion port. The ATI 4250 graphics card on the CQ56 is way better than the NVIDIA crap in the V6000. It's quite surprising that HP put the same crap in relatively higher-end laptops. Also you will have a better and larger harddrive and slightly faster ram. You probably should upgrade the ram modules to at least 4GB, though.
By the way I just received my CQ56. Sent the V6000Z on Feb 25 and received CQ56 on 5/24. -
I agree. I have a low-end HP dv6000 (6208nr to be exact). The CQ56 is a nice bump up for me. I don't remember what site I visited, but it had posted benmarks for my exact HP unit and the CQ56. CQ56 scored higher in almost everything. That said, this lawsuit is still a travesty for most of you. Most of you are getting banged and I'm going to avoid nVidia and HP whereever I can on general principle. I'm still going to miss the card reader, firewire port, and media buttons.
I had faced a similar decision as you. My HP has been working great since I bought it 4 years ago, though I did have the symptoms (scrambled video, occasional lock ups, driver failure). I decided to send it in anyway as I don't think it will last much longer versus a brand new laptop with a 1 year warranty. With any amount of luck, if I can get the Compaq to last at least 2-3 years, I'll be way ahead. I still hem and haw trying to sell it though. -
I sent the laptop on Thursday and they received it Monday. I called today to check the status and here's what I was told:
- They accepted it and order the Compaq.
- It will take 6-10 weeks (the person stressed the 10 weeks).
- I ask why so long and here's what I was told: The computers are built as ordered. They are not taken from stock. They are built outside of the United States and shipped here first (I assumed she meant to HP) and then they are shipped to the individual. -
It's already been 10 weeks since they received my DV9074CL and they haven't shipped my replacement CQ56-115DX laptop yet, I demand a refund!!! My laptop cost me over $1500 after tax...and I get a $300 one in return... :/ With no webcam, card reader, 17" screen, numeric key pad, dual core processor, and dedicated video memory card, among other things...
-
Hopefully you'll have more success than I did talking to the HP case managers and "corporate." I asked HP for a new or refurbished replacement similar to mine (17" and dual-core) or if they could fix my dv9000. The case managers told me "take it up with NVIDIA" and "we washed our hands of this issue." After stating my case, the case managers (I spoke with a few) said "I agree with you, but I'm not authorized to issue you a replacement computer. You'll have to talk with corporate."
The lady I spoke with a "corporate" was perhaps the most rude person I've ever dealt with. After she started contradicting herself, she actually gave me the silent treatment on the phone and wouldn't respond to my questions. Finally, she told me that case managers DO have the authority to issue new computers, but sometimes tell people they don't to get them off the phone. Of course she could have just told me that to get me off the phone.
Needless to say, I'll never purchase another HP product at home or at work (where we buy A LOT of equipment every year). I've also been very vocal expressing my thoughts about HP to my coworkers, friends, and family. I've already dissuaded a couple people from making the mistake of buying HP equipment.
Definitely post back and let us know if HP actually helps you. -
If her name is Jennifer I spoke to her too and she's a real life B#$^ch
-
Apple also stonewalled their customers over this bad nVidia GPU issue. Some of the bad GPUs were used in Apple products. Apple customers who bought those products received no love from Apple.
-
Exactly the same response here.
Rude, Obnixious, and the silent treatment when you show them that you know what they are talking about.
"Take it up with NVIDIA"
My response "
I Did Not Buy an NVIDIA I Bought A Compaq Presario HP"
And was then hung up on !!!!!
I know it's considered over but it's not over for me !!!!!
Wish we could get CNN or a major news media source to do a story on this then see how fast HP would change their tune !!!!!!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Haha, yeah...people keep talking like Apple is so great, but they had the problem too, and they treat their customers the same. People say bad things about HP, but actually, while my laptop was in warranty, they fixed it several times, then they extended the warranty an extra year for my model, I guess they knew about the problem and they fixed it more times. I sent my laptop to Nvidia to switch for this downgrade because I wasn't sure how long that repair would last before it would go dead on me again. I just hope this one lasts a while even though it's slow, it should be better than this 6+ year old laptop I'm using right now XD If I hear good things about people upgrading the processor, then maybe I'll do that as well as add some more ram, because 2gb is kinda low.
-
crApple is like the Gestapo of the technology industry. They give unique meaning to the words "control" and "proprietary" with their limited functionality and choreographed obsolescence.
-
Hey just putting in my 2 cents in here, I called the settlement group to see where my status is..... low and behold I get a tracking number for my ASUS, which was shipped Tuesday the 25th of May, and it will be delivered the 26th.
Kicker is I sent in 3 laptops all April 1st, 2011, I then called again about the 2 compaqs, status unknown for now.....
Also I will add everyone I have ever spoken too has been nice and great. -
The thing is, less people owned the tablets, there are many many many more dv2000, 6000, 9000, etc. so the CQ56-115DX is taking longer to ship to people. My DV9074CL was shipped 3/11/11 and they got it on 3/15/11 and the status of my CQ56-115DX is still unknown, seeing how you sent them about half a month later than I did, you should expect it to take a while longer.
-
What would be par for the course is that the CQ56 is discontinued by hp before it ships. This whole thing has been such a cluster that it wouldn't be surprising. What would be really cool is if AMD were to discontinue manufacturing all of their single core CPUs and the settlement administrator ended up having no alternative but to provide a multi-core AMD or Intel powered system. In fact, I am curious if availability of AMD mobile CPUs in general is delaying shipments. Their mobile CPU market share has been totally eclipsed by Intel and you cannot find AMD mobile CPUs for sale through normal channels; so, I find myself wondering if there are not more claimants in this settlement than there would normally be regular sales of AMD powered notebooks among all OEMs combined. The i3, i5, and i7 are the mobile processors of choice in the marketplace.
-
I wish that were the case for me. This past Monday, I was told that the Compaq was ordered. I didn't confirm what model, but I would imaging that if the model is available when ordered, that they have to full fill that order. Even if I don't see it at my door for three months.
-
I spoke to many, the first one was a gentleman, we spoke for about 45minutes, excellent CR rep, out of the 4 ladies that I spoke with all were
ok, and I really had a hard time being nice but I did because all of them were nice, I wish I would have spoke with Jennifer so I could have unloaded.
I would have then somehow contacted all the board members to report her attitude problem. I did email the secretary of the boarddirectorsters and asked if the board knew what was being done to their customers and the answer was, of course...I knew from the start that it was all about $$$ and not their consumers....HP has already lost in the long run. -
Hi, I just found this forum yesterday and spent 8+ hours reading everything on here. I would have petitioned with FairNVIDIA if I had known. Unfortunately, I didn't so I sent 2 of my computers in on March 9th and it was received March 10th. I've been calling the number on the NVIDIASettlement website at least 2 or 3 times a week trying to get an update, but as soon as I press 0 like the recording says, it just automatically hangs up. Is there another number I should try and call? It's been over 10 weeks and nothing.
BTW. I'm getting 2 comcraps. -
Try listening to the menu, and pressing the numbers that make sense, don't press 0 because 0 doesn't lead to anything in the menu. I forgot it was like 2 or 3 or something to do with the claim and then after it tells you information about that it gives you another menu to get to the representative.
-
Odd, maybe sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I called on Monday, pressed 0 and got someone to talk to. Maybe you guys are trying at off hours? There was a recording that there hours are 11a-8p Eastern time.
-
There's no option but to push 0 to speak to a live operator, I just went through all options for the 100th time
should've only sent in one at a time Didn't think it would take this long.
-
I never said HP is OK. I just wrote that Apple also treated their customers poorly. Neither company is worth a warm bucket of spit when it comes to resolving this nVidia matter properly.
But what you wrote above about HP does highlight an important chasm between the companies and ourselves, their customers:
The companies accept no responsibility whatsoever for the functionality of their laptops beyond the warranty period. We, as experienced laptop owners, know that a properly designed and cared-for laptop can serve many years.
For example, I still own and use (among many others) two IBM Thinkpad 600 laptops regularly. They are superb machines still today, and both are well over ten years old. So when we spent big money for our HP laptops, and cared for them properly, we anticipated long life. HP, OTOH, found death after a year, or after two years with the warranty extension, to be completely reasonable. And they implicitly believed we also should be accepting of such an outrageous, asinine outcome.
HP is and was completely nuts, of course. And everyone is profoundly aware of this . . . except the fools at HP themselves. -
Actually, my laptop was still working when I sent it in, I just sent it in because I was worried it might happen again, because it happened 3 times where the nvidia chip had problems...and then it had lots of other problems I sent it in for, hopefully this one will last longer, though I did sacrifice a lot of features from my DV9074CL...
-
ship my tx1000 on 3/30 they check it on 4/4 received my asus today.
-
Called the admin line yesterday, and if I heard correctly, they are shipping weekly, meaning one shipment is going out per week. Why would they ship one day out of the week when they have 5 business days?
-
That's crazy. i wonder how many gets shipped at a time? 50? it will take forever at this rate.
-
I called settlement admin last week and asked why it was taking so long for people to receive their laptops and I was told " because we are ordering them once we receive your laptop from overseas one at a time. We are building your laptops per order" I said no surprise since it is a discontinued model. What a crock! I have not sent my dv9005 in and not sure if I am going to. I am going to buy one of those dells Mr. Fox recommended, seems like that would be a good fit for now. After this I do not think I would ever invest over a grand on a laptop again!
Thanks Judge Ware! -
I was able to confirm that with them as well. I posted this a bit back, but was told that it is pretty much made to order and being shipped from over seas.
-
Been exactly 10 weeks today that they received mine and I havent heard a thing...
This is just pathetic, If I go to Dell and in fact if I go to HP's website and order one, I can get it in a few weeks...This is just plain wrong
