winXP cannot see my eSATA drives. I'm going to be reloading in the next couple days, I'll give it a try under Vista, then XP again after a clean install.

As a random thought, those of you trying to boot from eSATA, have you tried booting from the USB option? It doubles with the eSATA port and am just wondering on a tiny chance that the BIOS will determine USB or eSATA depending on the connection in that port at boot...and that it's just mislabeled in the BIOS.

A long short, but worth a try.

What software does everyone use with the tv tuner? I'm trying to make GB-PVR work. I've added it to the ini file, but scanning doesn't detect any channels. On their forums Sub thinks it's all setup ok, the logs look ok, and can't seem to offer any other advice as to why I'm not getting any signal. Anyone else had any luck, or with any other free software?

Well I can get signal ok in Win 7 with the small area, so it should be ok for anything else.

On another note, does anyone else notice explorer folder browsing, back and forth, slow when you have sounds enabled? I'm running the dv6 driver, and wondering if it has issues. Also, some games (only briefly tested), cause a lot of popping type noises fairly regularly. Like a slight break up in the sound. Wondering if this is because I enabled hardware audio acceleration which is perhaps not supported at all or only partially...Might have to try the modified driver.

Anyone having issues with the touchpad? I have it set to scroll under the mouse pointer, not the window that is focused. It seems things like standby/hibernate don't correctly restore this functionality, and it defaults back to the focused window only. Further, changing the setting of this scroll function doesn't bring the feature of scrolling under mouse pointer back. It seems you need to restart to get it back, which just sucks. I'm using the latest version, 11.1.18 or such.

I also note that the synaptics page has an OLDER version. It even prompts when I try to run it that there's a newer version installed. How does this work? lol. I guess they must release the newest updates to OEMs only.

Didn't work under vista either, so either either my configuration doesn't support eSATA, or I've got a bad eSATA cable. I'm betting on the later, since someone reported that their eSATA worked.

monroe, Vista/XP could not detect my HDD previously when i was using the "Rock" casing. I am now using the Vantec casing and it was detected both in Vista and XP, although it is still not detected by BIOS.

If connected via USB, BIOS will detect it. If i set it to bootup from USB HDD, i always get a BSOD. So, bootup from external (whether USB or eSATA) does not work for me.

I have downgraded to XP and I believe that I have installed all drivers listed on this thread. However I have Question Mark ? for the following under Other Devices in Device management:

Audio Device on High definition audio bus
PCI data acquisition and signal processing controller

Any Ideas on where I can find XP Drivers for those? I already tried to update the drivers but windows can't find anything.

Also what the best way to create the recovery cd for the xp. I don't want to go through the same process for installing xp again.

acording to my googling, the PCI data acquisition and signal processing controller is an intel device that should install with the latest Intel chipset drivers. as for the audio device on high definition audio bus, try this: http://rapidshare.com/files/152289190/HDMI.7z.html

Thanks dp64. I believe that I do have the latest Intel chipset drivers for Hp DV5t. I have Version: 9.1.0.1012 installed for Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. I will now try to download and install the other driver from rapidshare.

    Guys,

I have been following this thread for the past few days. Looking at the multiple steps and issues involved in downgrading to XP, I thought of continuing with vista.

But my DV5t(bought in Nov 2008) on which I have installed absolutely nothing as yet appears slower than my thinkpad T43 runing on XP with almost half the processor speed and 1/4th the RAM. Vista definitely eats resources big time. I do not think I can live with it once I start adding stuff onto it.

Can you guys please point me to the right thread/post which has the info. on XP downgrades which works say about 99%. I mean all the threads have some or the other issues pointed out by users so I am really confused as to which thread/post to follow in this huge 57 page post!!I do not have prior experience of installing OS on a laptop(have installed XP twice on my PC earlier).

    Config of my DV5t-
    - 3gb RAM, 320 GB HD, Fingerprint reader and webcam
    - No TV Tuner,
    - No Nvidia card

Why does no one seem to ever look at post 1?

Installing XP is simple - you basically just install XP and then the drivers. It's about as easy as it gets.

the 3D DriveGuard has worked for some systems (worked on mine) and not on others (mostly dv5t) there is a newer version 1.10.3 C which can be downloaded here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41001-41500/sp41474.exe

Could have agreed to that had this thread not dragged on since September last year!!heehee..So many problems u see. I might have went for a Sony or Lenovo had I known earlier that XP install would be so problematic..

That said, the post is very usefull nevertheless... I went through 20-30 pages of this post and took selective print outs as a handy reference.. Will try to get a WinXP SP3 cd and go from there.. I am a novice in this area so forgive my ignorance when I ask whether I can leave Vista untouched and install XP on a separate and bigger partition. I read that some tool called 'diskpart' can help. Also, does shrinking the vista partition mean that I do not break the warranty ??

Post 1 is regularly updated, so any issues that have since been resolved have been removed from the first post. Post 1 is all you need to read to install XP. Everything else in the 58 pages has been summarised in post 1.

    1. diskpart is just a partition manager.
    2. your HDD comes with Vista parition and HP recovery partition.

As suggested on page 1, please create the Vista recovery DVD first before messing around with the partitions.

First, uninstall the IDT Audio driver.
Download and install the "modified" package listed in thread 387.

HP actually disabled this device in the CQ40/CQ45/DV4 series, well at least in the BIOS versions I've tried.

IINM its the thermal sensors control for the South Bridge chip (ICH9M) and does not actually require a driver but needs to be recognized as such.

Try reinstalling the Intel Chipset driver software or just do an update driver and point at ICH9CORE.INF

When you use nLite to slipstream the Intel chipset drivers, there is an option to all include any service packs. You can add the sp3 pack here. Google nLite service pack or something similar and you will find many easy to follow tutorials.

Hi folks. First, thanks much for doc'ing this process! All useful drivers installed; Device Manager in order! (FYI, this thread was also helpful for my particular experience.) Although this process was a bit of a learning experience for me, it wasn't too painful... well, a little painful maybe, but the laptop and I survived. ;)

I could use help recovering my full audio. I have the "ing" (no "d") phenomenon. Other symptoms: First click on Windows sound bar doesn't create a sound, but successive clicks generate the "ing"; beginning of Windows' shut-down and start-up sounds cut off. If I've interpreted the relevant posts correctly, this might be a power/driver-management issue that will involve a registry edit? Does that sound right? Or perhaps a different IDT driver is required? (FWIW, I never experienced the orange mute button issue or noise popping that were mentioned in context with the IDT driver.) Whatever it is, please respond with specifics; I'm still a bit of a noob, especially when the registry is involved.

Specs: dv5t-1000, SP2 w/ updates, IDT drivers f/ sp41693 as referenced in post #1, step 16. Need anything else?

Thanks much! And to all those who have and will contribute, may your corn flakes never get soggy! :)

    Hello,
I own a dv5-1040ew notebook and have now successfully upgraded to XP. ;) I have all the hardware installed and running correctly (that I can check, and that includes the ValiditySensor, eSATA external drive (lots of BSODs on that one), sound card and QPLaunchButtons (those work perfectly, unlike the Vista version). All, but one, that is.

I can't install the HDD Data Protection/3D Guard Utility. I'm getting the 'no accelerometer hardware present' message. As far as I know, it isn't installed on my system (and it worked under Vista). I tried installing it manually (via the Add Hardware) using the .cab file in the first post here. It recognized the drivers as HP Mobile Data Protection Sensor, but I'm getting the BSOD (stop error 0x00010001) during the install. And then another one during the reboot (stop error 0x0000007b). After that it's (fortunately) back to the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option, or I wouldn't be writing this right now. :)

XP is installed on separate partition (drive E) (I've made it with Vista utility). Vista is still somewhere on drive C, but I have no intention of getting back to it, because I have no issues with XP (as of yet). I have not tried the dual boot. The lack of data protection doesn't bother me, but if there is a way to make it work, I wouldn't mind finding out.

So my question is: Is it possible to make it work? I googled the first error and it has something to do with 'damaged IRQ routing table', but that means practically nothing to me. And, hopefully, not that I have damaged the motherboard. :(

    Thanks,
    Kate

ETA: Found it. I recognize the softpaq number. I tried it, too. No go. :(
The only difference between those drivers seems to be that 1.10.3 are certified. The others weren't (Vista, too). Still, the result's the same.
