I see on Crucial you can get 4GB DDR3s SODIMMS for $589 each.
Pop a couple in and have 8GB in your T400/T500. Only about $1,200 bucks. What a bargain...for those for whom price is no object.
Screw bragging about having SSDs..."My RAM cost more that my entire laptop!"
I wonder how long until those prices plummet? Dec? Next March? Next Sept?
I get all Homer Simpson drooly when I think of 8GB RAM...
-
completely pointless in a non workstation business laptop like the new t series imo
-
and.... you just burst mikec's bubble lol
-
G.SKill sells 8GB for $340.
-
never say never, my first Compaq laptop (with the best track ball ever, on the side of a 9 inch screen) has 4M memory, upgrade to 12M, running Widows 3.1 for Workgroups, don't remember how big the hard drive is, but pretty sure it's smaller than the ram I ordered for my T500. ONe thing I am sure is that Office 4 install set has 31 floppies!
-
More ram means you can have more application running at the same time. I sometimes find myself have more than 20 plus apps, some of them certainly eat a big chunk of memory (not talking about CAD type, but even an big Office file could benefit). Do you remember last time when you have a 300 page Word file, with a lot diagrams, open and you scroll down to the next page, the screen pauses? With powerful cpu, big hard drive, you certainly can do a lot of things at the same time. Vista is very efficient at managing memory, it caches a lot of data transparently. Bigger ram is a much better/superior investment than fast HD/Intel HD cache/flash drive cache or whatever ways you try to speed things up. I spent about $120 for 2x2G in T500. If the price of 4G stick drops in a year or so, I'll definitely go for it.
-
Of ddr3? Where?
-
No, not of DD3, but a lower DD2-667. The density of 8192 megabytes of RAM should make up for the fact it has a lower clock setting. Just have to ask yourself whether the price is justified by DD3-1066 as opposed to DD2-667, which is 75% less but probably will suit your needs if you have a well polished system.
-
I wasn't aware that DDR2 and DDR3 ram sticks were interchangable. I thought the notch was in a different spot making it impossible to even insert it. Or am I mistaken?
-
I wasn't aware T400/T500s only took DD3 RAM.
Boo Lenovo! -
They're not interchangable.
-
Yeah, boo moving forward with technology! Let's go back to using 168 pin SDRAM! YAY!
-
Really? You oppose technology? Must be one of those hippies mom told me about <_<.
-
Gotta choose one standard or another. Lenovo just decided to go with a newer standard and provided the new RAM sticks at really cheap prices.
Hey, at least now I know that I'll be able to upgrade to the 8GB sticks when prices become reasonable for them sometime in the future.
Do you truly want them to stick with old DDR2 technology? -
I like your commitment, but unless you have a very specific need it doubt it's worth the cost. Now if you have a trust fund and have no money worries like the rest of us then perhaps. If you do have a trust fund, are you looking to adopt? Quite frankly, I need a good home.
-
No, I don't oppose technology. You on the other hand...
-
Not if you run virtual machines. I know hundreds of developers would would kill for an 8GB RAM laptop. This is right up their alley.
-
Shhh. People who exclusively choose the most expensive options a providing a valuable service in that they help manufacturers fund their R&D and possibly drive down the prices for the rest of us. We don't want them to stop doing that, do we now?
-
Yeah I deleted what I said. I figured that out eventually and decided these new technology hippies can pay for whatever they want. Then when the debate comes between T9400 or P8600 they scream GO FOR THE P8600 FTW and revert back to older technology cause its cheaper. But when it comes to RAM "ooOoo we must have the DD3z cuz it's newer"
-
Do i really need 8gb of ram? Probably not. But do i really want 8gb of ram? You bet I do. All of those who want 8gb of ram at a decent price, give me a HELL YEAH! lol.
-
HELL YEAH!
Well, for the rest of us anyway. I was gonna link to the NewEgg 4GB sticks from G.Skill for $170 each but too bad they're DD2 =/ -
Yea, that is too bad, you had me excited!
I have to run a few VM windows machines, so the more ram the better. But not for a grand!
-
It has nothing to do with anyone saying that we must have DDR3, it has to do with Lenovo only offering it with DDR3. With processors, you have a choice and can go with whatever you want for whatever reason. With RAM, your choice is limited to size. Complaining about them using DDR3 is useless. You have no choice, deal with it.
-
In case you didn't notice, I said "Boo Lenovo", which I'm not sure how you read as a complaint and took it oh so sensitively to your dear thinkpad. Try reading and "think"ing some more about it. It wasn't in a hostile tone, it was more like a "dam it I was gonna say get the DD2 ones but that sucks since thinkpads will refuse it" and you take it as a way of me opposing new technology. Rofl, and I'm not the one with no choice, you are
. I can use the 8GB ddr2 for cheap, you can't
.
Anyways, not to veer off the thread, which people take my booing as complaints for a system I could care less about. Sorry OP. -
If you couldn't (not could) care less, then why are you in here in the first place? Flame bait?
Hmm... -
Didn't know I had to care about something to try and help. And yes, my life goal is making you get angry behind that keyboard
-
I fail to see where you have helped anyone in this thread and I also fail to see where I showed any anger.
-
And I constantly fail to see how you read posts.
I said try.
D*mn you're impossible to get through that thick skull... -
Where have you tried to help anyone? All you've done is pointed out that DDR2 is cheaper, which is completely irrelevent in a thread where the OP specifically mentioned two laptops that only use DDR3.
Keep trying. -
Well I did try, that was my ignorance of not knowing his laptop only took a certain type of RAM. And you come and talk about Im opposing new technology, rofl way to be an a-hole. You've helped so much around here, you're a role model =)
-
You booed them for using something newer than DDR2. No, I guess it wasn't exactly a complaint, but still seems to easily come off as opposing a newer technology.
Keep the personal insults coming though. I really enjoy them. -
Okay, I wasn't opposing it. Let's clear that up. I was just upset I couldn't offer the OP to buy the 8GB DRR2 for $340. Simple as that (=
8GB RAM for my Thinkpad...who's with me? ;-)
