Had to send my Y410P back for repairs. I posted last week that I was having tons of crashes in Civ V, PLUS, in the event log, I was having frequent messages that stated the processors were being throttled down due to system firmware. I compared it with my bosses laptop, which is 100% identical and mine was MUCH warmer, even at idle. Called Lenovo support and they recommended sending it in, rather than having a tech come out (we purchase the on-site warranties at my company). If I had to guess, I think it's a paste job problem on either/both the CPU and GPU. Just thought I would bring it up, hope I get it back soon, it is currently being worked on.

Ironic because i have Dual-Band 300MBPs Wireless N (My Router is N) in my Desktop, and i still get a more reliable connection from my laptop's 2230.

Why not just use Wi-Fi? Works perfectly, reliable, heck, grandma's are setting up wireless routers at this point. I've never heard much good from people that used powerline internet.

    Heeeeey guys!! It arrived today!
So stocked, laptop looks even better in real life. I need to get used to it though cause it feels weird for now compared to my old HP.
So far so good, at the beginning it looked kind of slow but now it's smooth np.
Could you tell me what softwares to delete ? I'm afraid of deleting something that I shouldn't

You need to upgrade the Intel GPU driver. Had the same problem a while back, the Intel driver is not releasing memory and using up everything over time.

The 900p screen is so sharp it hurts my eyes lol
On my former laptop, the GPU was broken so the screen's resolution was 768p but on a 17'' panel, my eyes will need some time to adjust

The trackpad feels kinda slow, should I update the driver ?

Y410P has optical audio out and a stereo headphone jack. So if your headset supports optical input or uses a USB device for surround you are good to go. If you are wanting to do analog surround you are out of luck.

You will get used to the USB port placement, but I have to agree with the crappy plastic border around the screen. If I re-designed it, I would lose the webcam, and fit in a nice fast IPS screen which used all the real estate available. I had a DV5 also, but the sound on the Y410P is much better in my opinion, and with an SSD, it's light years faster.

To be honest with you, i haven't seen a Y410p, or even a Y510p, that was purchased off Lenovo directly, come without the connector.

Yes, this happened to me too, i upgraded from 1200x800 on a 15.4'', and from 1920x1080 on a 22", both of which have significantly lower DPI than 900p @ 14.1". However i recommend toggling the resolution back and forth from 1366x768 to 1600x900 just to fix any sharpness issues that might come with the panel's stock settings.

I somewhat agree but also disagree.

First of all, i don't think removing the webcam is necessary, as it could easily be repositioned. If you are on a Y410p, look at the spot which is located between the F6 and F7 keys, just above it, there is a little slant angle that dips the keyboard so the lid can close. That little slant is where the webcam should be, as it would then face the user.

Then, Lenovo could place a 15.4'' 16:10 1900x1200 panel, which would take away most of the bezel space yet leave just a little to properly hold the screen.

I disagree with IPS however, the main selling point of the laptop is that it's cheap, and also all of Lenovo's IPS panels seem to have light bleed and retention issues.

If the y410p came with a 1900x1200 resolution, then the GT755m would make it completely inadequate as a gaming laptop. Either you'd scale all games to lower resolutions, making them blurry or you would get potato frame rates.

Also some games, like all Bethesda ones (Skyrim, FNV, FO3, Oblivion) run much more stable in window mode for some reason. That would make scaling them down impossible.

Overall the 900p resolution of the y410p is perfectly suited for this laptop. If you wanted or needed more screen real estate, then you should have chosen a different machine.

In this case, they should opt for 14 inch QHD+, which scales perfectly to 900p when gaming.

How to make sure the battery will last ? On my last laptop, the battery slowly died in 1 year, after 1 year I could get 30 minutes at 100% lol
Do I need to let the battery fuly discharge to 0% before charging? Do you take the battery out when plugged in ?

Fully discharging your battery will destroy it fairly quickly. -.- Just set it to "optimize battery health" and leave it at there. Battery will remain at 60% even when plugged in.

I would say they are a bit over generous on the amount of paste they use :D. Temps of course dropped about 4-5 degrees on average from testing last night . Used MX-4 paste but any paste and a better job will certainly suffice compared to the factory mess.

No. HP envy 14 has QHD display and retails for 800$. They could easily squeeze it under 1000$.

Buy HP ENVY TouchSmart 14-k110nr Sleekbook - Microsoft Store

I'd rather the Y40 have QHD than FHD. 1080p is a bit too cramped on a 14 inch anyways.

Mine had serious heat issues, just sent it back for repair this week (detailed a couple of pages ago). Makes me wonder if improper pasting wasn't contributing to the stability and throttling problems I had.

It is certainly possible. I have seen some nasty paste jobs in my years of doing this. Sometimes repasting makes a difference and other times where even though there was 10 pounds of paste IE Retina Macbook Pro where i thought it would make a difference it did not.

Chances are if your machine was heating up to that degree it was probably the heatsink not being securely fastened from the factory or something along those lines. Hopefully they find the issue and don't send it back saying they didnt find anything wrong with it with there testing. That can be frustrating.

Agreed. I think the constant throttling was what was contributing to my Civ V crashes, as well as the crashes when encoding video. The status at Lenovo said it is "currently being repaired" so I am optimistic they found something.

unfortunately, y410p does not have mSATA slot/connector
    only m2 ssd

    btw
    why don't u use a normal SSD + caddy ?
the normal (2,5 inch) SSD is faster than MyDigitalSSD 128GB M2 SSD
    as someone posted earlier

    Damn :(
I opened the back of laptop to verify if it had the ngff connector. Does it void my warranty or return capability?

It won't fit in the M.2 slot, but it will fit in the place of the Intel 2230, and will make a fine replacement as long as you have the modded BIOS.

Y410p's outside of North America may not contain the backlit keyboard.

No it won't, as long as you return the laptop with all of it's stock parts, the stock SSD, stock HDD, stock RAM and stock Wifi. However outside of the 4 items i mentioned, all other internal upgrades will void the warranty as they are not made to be user serviced.

Funny you mention money savings. 2.5 inch SSDs are both faster and cheaper than the NGFF one provided by MDS, but you lose the optical bay. Also i recommend placing the HDD in the optical bay and the SSD in the main bay.

Well, the envy 14's specs is like a $400 g series lenovo's. That panel itself cost like $400? My statement remains true. It will make the y410p cost north of 1200.

Touché, but i'd like Lenovo to completely ditch 1366x768, offer 900p as stock and QHD+ IPS as optional.

That, i can agree with. The 1366x768 model i have seems to be a low quality tn panel. The difference between my macbook air's 1440x900 and this 1366x768 is day and night. I wish i could have the power of a y410p and the screen of my macbook air.

Are you on the Lenovo installed Win 8/8.1? Do you have the Lenovo energy management installed? All other lenovo drivers installed? Did you uninstall some critical SW while de-bloating?

And as far as hard drives go... The MyDigitalSSD 128GB M.2 is not the fastest out there by a long shot. As I've read recently, their M.2 SSD can be compared to a Toyota Corolla, the 5400RPM HDD a tricycle, and a Samsung 840 Pro as Ferrari. The MyDigitalSSD may be slow in the world of SSDs, but it's way faster than a platter based HDD.
