I posted my test results on the 24GB NGFF M.2 SSD and my Samsung EVO 512GB SSD. Based on those results, either the card they use for the 24GB SSD sucks, or the NGFF m.2 connector sucks. Either way, it's WAY slower in both read and writes versus the 2.5" Samsung.

ok lads, so please suggest a reliable caddy (there are plenty of them around, I am concerned about their quality) and if you would please weigh in this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sol...ge/746236-250-ssd-primary-os.html#post9577303
or here, is spending 50 on the samsung evo ssd really worth the benefit (vs crucial m500 240gb) -
I don't understand anything in all the connectors you're talking about, I think I'm just gonna get a 120Gb SSD, put the OS on it with my games and everything else on the HDD and it will be perfect.
Hey Jason, you played TitanFall on your Y410p, does it run smoothly?
Seems like an awesome game. -
I bought one of these for my Y410p and the quality is fantastic. 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y400N Y410N Y410P with Bezel | eBay
Also it arrived in about 5-6 days and much faster then i had anticipated or the time quote they gave.
Also for people who have issues getting the ultra bay out once you do remove it the thing making it stick is the black triangle piece poking out of the part attached to your dvd drive on the side and if you shave it down with nothing more then a razor blade it will now slide in and out effortlessly (Like it should have from the beginning). Its getting hooked on to something inside the chassis and i read a couple posts where people had hard time removing it myself included. -

I tried titanfall during its 3 day beta. I think its obvious that you won't be able to run it on maxed settings. It ran at high at around ~40 fps average, though it did drop to 20ish at more gpu heavy parts. I had the settings around medium~high so that it doesn't drop below 30, since I'm not really a hardcore first person shooter guy. (I'm more of a league of legends guy).
Also to the guy above me or anyone that has a hdd in a caddy+ssd. How is the battery life affected? I've been thinking of getting an ssd+caddy, but the thing holding me back is money and the effect it will have on battery life as I can barely make it past 2 classes before the laptop dies. -
My battery life has not changed at all honestly. I have the 62whr battery and get about 5 to 5 1/2 hours.
The drive in the caddy will sleep while not in use so it won't be sucking up battery juice while your just using main hd. -
ok caddy done, but still confused on the ssd. as in crucial m500 or samsung evo (costs CAD 40 extra)
And i have a spare external 2.5inch harddisk case (used for laptop harddisks) should I order starter kit? (i am presuming all that starter kit has is a caddy so you can connect both yoru initial OS drive and the new drive in the laptop to clone and transfer the partitions.? -
Crucial. Cheapest is better. benchmarks does not translate to real world differences. Also, windows 8 uses about 30gb of space.
-
i'm having problems with the new driver update of nvidia, Portal 2 crash after 10 minutes of game. it says low of memory. i try with different games, and i dont have problemas with them. it's only portal 2. how can i download the old driver of nvidia? it is save to downgrade the driver?

Finally the proud owner of the Y410p! Got a 755m instead of a 750m, just loving it. Can even play stock BF4 with some settings on ultra/medium/AA at 50-80 frames.
Amazing -
Cause here's what I heard :
-
For the SSD, performance benchmark speeds mean nothing when in real-world use, unless you do stuff like video editing where you write to the SSD constantly, but for the average user, and even gamer, any SSD will do. Hence why i recommend getting the M.2 SSD as it allows you to save your DVD drive, the only downside being the limited capacity.
For a comparison, i heard someone mention this before, but an HDD is a tricycle, a low end SSD is a Toyota Yaris and a fast SSD is a F1 car. Bottom line, they are both so much faster than the tricycle that it really doesn't matter. I'd choose a reliable brand and MLC memory over speed when picking an SSD. -
At least the 755 is an overclock under warranty and without risk.
I saw the 755 gives +15% more fps on average compared to the 750. -
- 2GB DDR3 (ASUS N550JV, Acer V7 482PG)
- 1GB GDDR5 (Apple rMBP 15)
- 2GB GDDR5 (Lenovo Y4/510p Pre-October, Dell Inspiron/XPS 15, Clevo W650SR)
The 755M is based off the third one, with +39core and + 200 memory. Consequently it runs maybe 1-2 degrees hotter. Only 2-3 units have the 755M:
- Lenovo Y4/510p Post-October
- Apple iMac -
So in medium/high it's fluid ?
Btw, how does the laptop handle league ? -
And idk, I was in the Titanfall beta as well on my older laptop with medium settings, and my friend was practically able to max it out (40- 60 fps) on a GTX 560m which is much less performing than a 750/755.
Also, if you look at this guy:
Titanfall Beta Lenovo y410p - YouTube
He's practically maxed out literally on everything.. and still gets 60 frames out of mech combat and around 30 in mech combat, and still looks really damn smooth. -
Nice, sounds amazing. You don't get too much tearing with v-sync off ?
I thought GTX 560M and GT 755M had pretty much the same performance level.
Yeah he gets some solid FPS. -
755 beats the 560 by 15 to 50%, but with only 50W TDP instead of 75W. -
The GTX460M and GTX560M were barely able to push 1080P in Skyrim on medium settings, FNV, FO3 on high settings, Metro 2033 on low settings.
The GT540M was almost on par with the above at 720P on low or low-medium settings.
The GT750M at 900P is able to play anything I threw at it, Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, FNV, FO3, Metro Last Light, Borderlands 2, etc at medium-high or high settings.
Ironically the GT650M on 720P was actually faster than anything else in all games, but I don't like 720P screens. They're decent for gaming, but for actual productivity it feels too cramped.
My point, if you're still with me, is that the GTX560M was always matched with 1080P, and it was inadequate. It's likely that the GT750M would be equally slow on a 1080P screen, but on the 900P screen that came with my Y410p, it's fantastic.
I hope I won't jinx it, but the Y410p is the best laptop for the money I've owned in the past 4-5 years, at least since I sold my Acer 3820TG.
Wow, went through a mental list and realized I owned far, far too many laptops... -
Hopefully one day i'll be able to afford a 1000$+ laptop with premium specs and build quality. Until then, i'll stick with my Y410p since it's just as powerful as my desktop, but in an affordable, portable and slient package.tarchas likes this. -
got mine today!!!
first impressions:
Noticeably lighter, cooler then my hp dv5 (but that laptop is old and it was considered heavy back in it's day too!). It's 1600x900, i7, nvidia 755m and the colours seem fine to me, for now.
I can't say if it's fast or not because I am installing alot of operations and windows gradually adjusts (also they stopped shipping ssds with the highend y410p so I don't have it in this one. If I decide to keep it, I will order the ssd and ultra bay (because that's the only option if you need ssd)
but i really really really, I mean really really dislike the location of usb ports. It's stupid.
I am still updating and installing stuff. will try BF4 and if I like it, I will order the ssd and the ultrabay .
also, as a 15.6 inch screen user, the 14 inch does feel smaller and the large border on top of screen really doesn't help. -
Also i agree with the poor port placement, but this issue is fixed in the newer Y40/Y50. Guess Lenovo learned their lesson. My mouse is wireless so i don't mind, only real uses for my ports are for USB sticks. -
The y410p is +1000$, Mine costed me CAD 1013$ with taxes. (this is ridiculous how the CAD lost his value) -
Mine is coming tomorrow. -
Sadly nothing you can do, everything here is always 100$ more expensive than the US, it seems. -
-
I'm holding for a ~250GB M.2 SSD. -
The reviews on amazon are really good.
So it's for people who don't want to get rid of their ultrabay ? Cause I won't use the DVD reader, like a lot of people nowadays. -
-
-
Hmmmm, so I should find out, just going to run a few tests on the system, be fully satisfied before I pop the hood. thought I haven't found anything that would cause me to return the device, but god the usb placement. And the 14 v/s 15 inch difference.
May be if I shut down my old lappy and worked only on this, I won't feel it (i will be retiring my old lappy anyways) but god if only 15 inch wasn't that costly
Also: any common tests I should run to ensure things are working fine ? -
What's wrong with the usb ports?
For the screen, you'll get used to it. In one week you won't notice anymore. -
yolo, the usb ports are structured in a way that it becomes kinda difficult if you use the mouse...you will understand when you get it.
-
-
I run windows 8.1 as well, no problems. I rarely ever use more than 4gb of ram.
@jobine the y410p sold here in singapore is like $300-400 more than the price in US. Its pathetic.
The usb was an annoyance at first. I got used to it though. The headphone jack is also on the right which is slightly annoying as my mouse sometimes run into it. My macbook air had the headphone jack on the left which was much better. -
Not gonna lie either, but for 688, this has literally been the best purchase I have ever made. Looking at other brands, ASUS, HP Envy, Dell XPS, and so on, nothing even comes remotely close to the performance of a Y410p for its price.

My new wifi card should be arriving in a few days, and I was curious what hacked BIOS everyone was using? Google does yield options, but I figured I'd check and see what's worked well for others. This is what I ordered, for the curious:
Amazon.com : Intel 7260HMW NB IEEE 802.11n PCI Express - Wi-Fi Adapter : Telephone Products And Accessories : Computers & Accessories -
whats the point of upgrading if you are gonna get yet another dual band wireless N card? only upgrade if u are upgrading to a wireless AC card imo.
-
-
well, he is going to get a modded bios. A normal N card to another dual band N card is hardly considered an upgrade though.
-
As long as he goes dual-band that should improve things. -
-
I'm ditching the 2230 because I don't enjoy all the dropped connections. I've tried many (possibly all) of the tips suggested in this thread to varying degrees of success, but for how cheap wireless cards are, I'm just gonna roll the dice with a different one, as it's unlikely to be worse than the 2230. I agree there's a fair argument to be made for AC, but I've made my choice (my router is dual band N, as many of you probably suspect).
-
So i downloaded win 8.1 and it activated succesfully; i have my windows back now.
Thanks for your suggestion.
Now when i backup using one key, it says that backup is not supported for the current system. -
i have never encounted any problems with the centrino 2230 and factory drivers. I guess you have a very crowded 2.4ghz?
-
Strictly in terms of a steady connection, both at home and away on public and business networks, the Intel 2230 performs worse than the Intel 5300 in my old laptop. I've tried the drivers baked into Windows, the drivers provided by Lenovo, and Intel's most up to date drivers. Bluetooth disabled in all cases (no use for it anyway). And other workarounds suggested by others here.
