Yeah I saw that and I was thinking, geez have they screwed up in the pricing or something? Because the i7 one, has slightly better graphic card and more harddisk space too!
Anyways, I would highly suggest you add extra 100 and get the 1600x900 screen for $899. It does make a lot of difference in user experience (says the guy who had (1200x something) on his former laptop and moved to 1600x900 on lenovo

As for battery life, I don't know how much you will gain by i5 configuration but if I had to make a statement about it , I would say " I have doubts if it will be over 30 minutes "
About the american layout, umm perhaps contact the sales team while making an order and request them for it? You can do it either on phone or on their webchat.

Seriously for 100$ you get i5>i7 and 720p>900p
Totally worth it, thats what I get

It's working perfectly, nothing to complain about, very satisfied.
The screen is great, the touch pad is good, keyboard feels good. It runs all my games without problem and it's actually smaller and lighter than I imagined so it's easy for me to bring it to college. I couldn't ask for more, laptop of my dreams <3

The only issues I had were related to windows 8 and were easily fixed np

Try both an see which looks better. You may not see any difference on a 14" screen. But you shouldn't have any problem with 1080p playback on a 900p screen. It will just scale down a bit.

Is it BF4-specific? I have that game and it's hella buggy.

1080p will look slightly chopped up and 720p will look slightly blurry, i'd go for 1080p, if you have the extra bandwidth

Jobine, I wanted to send you a PM but apparently I dont have that ability yet. Anyway I just ordered a y410p and am looking at also upgrading my hard drive to a ssd. I've been reading about how a lot of people are missing the m.2 connector. I think I would be fine with just replacing the stock hard drive with an ssd. 128 gb is enough for me. My current lenovo only has about 100 gigs used right now. Now if Im going for a straight replacement this guy would be compatible correct?

My biggest issue right now is the speed of my hard drive. It is so F'ing slow. I dont care if I have to lose 370 gb to lose that bottle neck, I dont want any hard drive like that in my laptop. Thing is I want the SSD in hand when I get the laptop so I can start using the thing right away. Then I can also check if I have the m.2 connector and maybe add internal storage later.

I see no reason why you would need a 840 pro. Its quite waste of money. Get a 840 evo, crucial m500 or intel 530 ssd. I would go for whatever is the cheapest. You cant feel the difference.

Is moving information over pretty straight forward. I really like to get rid of the bloatware and upgrade to the newest possible drivers so a straight clone might not be ideal. I could create a recovery disk, but you still get the bloat ware.

Last time I did that on a friends laptop is was a pain from what I remember, they did not provide a key, the only reason they eventually did was because he has win 8 pro and he was down grading . Deosnt microsoft make that process pretty hard?

You mean use software to extract the key? I tried that with my lenovo and it did not work. Someone on another forum said something like you cannot use that key for a retail copy, you have to use the one that is on the genuine sticker, which of course they do not provide anymore. I appreciate the help btw...

On a different machine, I had an OEM install of Win7 and was able to get a new key though Microsoft. Installed a clean ISO and then gave them a call.

I had run one of the key tools that show what's on your machine and then called Ms. Sticker was torn on bottom of laptop, OEM install, here's the numbers I have.

Took them awhile, but they did it - generally if you're up front and doing something legit, they'll help you. At last I've heard more stories of it working than not.

You guys are awesome thank you.

I just ordered the y410p a few days ago so I have a while before it gets here, but ideally, I want to throw in the crucial hard drive that hailgod had suggested, install a clean copy of windows 7 (which I wont be able to do because the laptop does not come with 8 pro with downgrade rights, so I'll settle for windows 8) and get all updated drivers. My feeling on these new SSDs is that they really reduce the importance of the ram as well.

I used to be a huge computer guy a decade ago, but have fallen off on tech. I'm getting married and my fiance and I are probably going to start trying for a kid later this year, plus we are trying not to go out because we are saving for a house (In Santa Barbara of all places) so I figured a new laptop that can handle some games is in order since we'll be inside a lot more lol.

You are correct. And MichaelLC above had a good response to this. I did a clean install the first time and it was kind of a pain. Second time I installed, (I returned my 1st Y410p to get the one without the 24gb ssd) I just did a clone from the HDD to my installed SSD because I didn't want to jump through the hoops of extracting the key and having to get all the correct drivers again.

So I just had a weird experience with the WiFi sitting here in class. Before getting to this class I was using my pc to study in another room. Turned it off. Packed it up. Came to class and took out my pc.

When I turned it on, I found that no wireless connections were available. Opened Device Manager to find that my Wireless Driver completely disappeared from the Network drivers. After several times of rebooting my pc, checking the BIOS to confirm that my wireless card was enabled, troubleshooting connections, and several more reboots, it finally came back on. The Wireless Driver appeared again out of nowhere.

Has anybody experienced this odd phenomenon? I have no idea what caused it to disappear or what even caused it to reappear. Guess I shouldn't worry since it's working, but it's still really weird.

Doesnt windows 8 have the feature where it will find all the drivers for you? Thats what I did with my SL510 when I reinstalled, it did all that for me, I would hope windows 8 would do the same.

But ya if its hoops I have to jump through then cloning does not sound so bad lol.

AFAIK the windows 8 key is actually embedded in the BIOS. If you reinstall the same version of Win8 it should automatically grab the key that way.

^^^ Ahh okay I remember discussing that when I was having problems with my SL510. I hate to leave things to chance, but from what I remember that was the explanation several people gave to me. So in that case you would just need a good ISO file that is the same version of windows you have.

I bought the Samsung, as it comes with a kit and software to clone the 1TB HDD to the lower capacity SSD. Some of the cloning software out there has issues with going from larger to smaller drives, or it makes the process more tedious. Also, the Samsung comes with their Magic software which lets you tune the drive, test the performance, and replace the Intel cache software. Pretty good stuff for a little bit of extra money.

For the clone process, you just install the SSD in place of the old HDD, attach the original 1TB HDD to the SATA III USB adapter, and run the clone software. Done.

Finally installed my 7260 wifi card, working like a charm so far. How would I go about uninstalling the drivers of the 2230? I can't find any trace of the 2230 in device manager anymore. On a side note, holy crap, the upgrade was much harder than I thought it was going to be. The screw securing the 2230 had to have been glued or something. I stripped the screw that held it down so much that there was literally nothing more for any screwdriver to grip, and I wasn't using an improperly sized head. I had to drill the damned thing out, and luckily there was a suitable replacement screw around the house.

I'm serious! I thought i left it in the Computer Science lab, when i went there, i asked if someone found a charger, and mine was there!

I just use a messenger bag. I have a backpack though, but it's not one designed for laptop, so it requires me to use a sleeve, which i have none.

Yeah I meant the honest Canadians who didn't steal your charger. We all know you lie through your teeth :p

Yeah they use blue loc-tite on most of the screws, it's supposed to just keep the screw from backing out on its own but sometimes it can be a pain to break loose.
No need to uninstall the drivers for the 2230, they'll just sit in the system folder doing nothing and not interfering. If you have the Intel ProSet software installed you'll want to uninstall/upgrade that.

Placed my order with Lenovo. Went with the i7 w/ 1366x768 reso in the end. Uni is in my rear-view mirror, and I plan on using HDMI > TV for home gaming. The site suggested that the shipping date will be March 13th - has anyone gotten theirs sooner than expected? East coast of Canada here...

Also, has anyone dual booted with a linux distro yet? I've been away traveling for the last 2 years, so I am well out of the loop. I've skimmed by some info regarding a BIOS lock/security that is enabled for Windows 8... ?

    hey canadians!
I am currently in canada too!!
I do have a laptop bag (backpack), but with all the snow I fear I might accidentally slip and fall on my laptop when walking with it is there something to protect against this? I mean most of the sleeves I see aren't good enough for that. I remember watching a video where an Ipad in a specific cover was dropped from like 20 feet and it survived, do they make something like that for things which are actually useful?

STANK: dude, I don't mean to be a , (though statistically, if you start a sentence with that statement, you are likely to be one) but please do consider getting the 1600x900 screen. Also, my experience with their delivery would lead me to conclude that it's likely that your laptop will be shipped around 17th (i.e. add a few days from the time they mention on the website)

I had an incident with my laptop. Mainly, I started playing Batman: Arkham City and it maxed at 83C for my CPU. I went "Whoa," since previously it'd maxed at 77C. Shut it off, do other things while silently panicking. It stays at 65C for like 10 minutes while browsing the Internet. So I really started to freak out, and do Dust Removal. THANK GOD FOR DUST REMOVAL! Goes back to 40C for normal browsing. Play Batman. Maxes out at 74C. Play it again today. Maxes out at 72C. PHEW. So my question is, would the following be a potential reason it overheated?

I cut my nails and thought all the clippings got in the trash, but I saw one got on the laptop desk I use for my laptop. I cleaned it off, but am wondering if it's possible another got into the laptop and was causing the problems? My laptop is fine one minute, then BAM overheats. Was fine for first month, hottest it ever got was 77C after a long Batman play session, which I don't consider overheating. But then it gets to 83C (Which I do consider overheating) and 65C while browsing the Internet. So I just thought it was a nail clipping. Is that possible?

EDIT: It happened right after I installed Lego Marvel. During the entire installation the fan was running and I could hear it. I am not knowledgeable about computers at all, and don't even know why I could hear the fan (The few hours it took Batman to install it was completely silent) but after I installed the Lego game was when it overheated. Almost burning hot just in the menu screen in the Lego game, and 76C just from playing Lego Marvel. Is it possible it sucked up a bunch of dust when it was installing it? Like I said, my knowledge of computers is extremely limited, so that might be completely hilarious and misguided, but I'm just exploring options since a nail clipping getting caught in the fan seems rather hilarious and misguided as well.

an ipad is very light. Lesser than 500 grams. A y410p is like 2.2kg. The difference in inertia makes it quite difficult to create something that can completely protect the laptop while being thin and light. Your best bet would be to use styrofoam to contain the laptop.

Nope, 128GB isn't large enough for your needs. If you're already using 78% of the SSD's capacity, it leaves you nearly zero room to grow. No installed games, etc. Get a 256GB drive.

I disagree. The 840 PRO is a fantastic drive. It has a proven track record of excellent reliability and performance. The 840 Evo, in larger capacities, is a nice drive as well. It's ~80% as fast as the 840 Pro, but due to the Evo using TLC nand, the long term reliability won't be there. The higher capacity TLC based drives are OK, because the usage is balanced around more nand chips. The lifespan of the ~128GB TLC drives just won't be there.

You seem very shallow in your knowledge of SSDs. The 840 evo will have life expectancy of more than the warranty even covers. You will have no issues with it unless u write 50gb of files everyday. The 840 pro wins in benchmarks. But have you seen real world test? There is virtually no difference between the evo and the pro to justify the extra cost.

the 840 evo and 840 uses the same TLC technology.

    Shallow? Hardly. ;)

I'll gladly pay a few more dollars to make sure that my SSD is good for years and years of daily use. You'll also note that I mentioned that a higher capacity Evo drive will be OK. You clearly missed that the point of my post was that a 128GB drive will be insufficient for a laptop that will see daily use.

Here is a link for the 256GB 840 Pro for $185US. The 250GB 840Evo seems to sell for ~$145US for a bare OEM drive. Either drive should provide DavefromCA with years of speedy performance, but the 840 PRO IS a superior drive for not a lot more money. Just avoid a 120GB drive.

Did you read the article that you posted, because it proves my point entirely. The MLC drives have less than half of the reliability of the TLC drives in this particular test, and the TLC drives are still going!

I think you meant TLC. Also, the 840 is still going strong after 600TB of writes. Who's going to do that? Thats enough for 100GB WRITES PER DAY FOR 16 YEARS. I was once like you. I thought the 840 pro was going to be "godly" so i bought one. I only learned more after i got it and really, an evo cost so much lesser for similar performance.

So, what are you arguing here? You posted 2 ~250GB drives. So you're agreeing with me that the 120GB 840Evo (or any ~120GB drive really) is insufficient for the only drive in the Y410P?

It also appears that you went out of your way to find a more expensive 840 Pro! Is it "godly"? No, but it's proven to be a damned good drive. Was it a bargain at its original MSRP? Hell no, it was friggin expensive! Is it a bargain now? Hell yes! Faster, more robust, and slightly more capacity than the Evo for $40US more. Durrrrrrrrr.

Want me to really make it look like a bargain? $1/GB. Boom.

Lol, i never went out of my way to find a 840 pro at that price. I always buy my ssds from amazon so it was an obvious website to go to. I posted 2 250gb drives because thats what you did. Its pointless to compare a 120gb drive to a 250gb drive. If he thinks 120gb is enough for him, by all means, get it. I don't know why u want to make the 840 pro seem better than it is. The fact is they perform exactly the same in real world test.

So what's the community's consensus on the N-2230 card vs the 7260 cards based on performance? I never thought of it as a problem cause my internet is a little choppy but I just compared it to my roommate's old ASUS with speeedtest.net and I found that I'm reading download speeds at 2/3 of my roommates download speed.

Any tips on improving performance (like anything you can change in driver properties that would help)?
