Whoa! You can clone the HDD onto a smaller SSD? And here I've been moaning to myself about the cost of a 1TB Samsung SSD. Quite a price jump to that even from 500GB, into which my stuff would fit with plenty of room to spare.

    Thanks for that info!

No Problem. But there is one caveat that is just common sense. The amount of DATA on the 1TB drive still has to be the same as or smaller than the size of your new SSD. So if you want to move to a 250GB SSD from the 1TB HDD, there should be less than 250GB USED capacity on the HDD.

Enjoy! That was the best freaking upgrade I ever did on any laptop I have owned (except for the awesome Nvidia prowess of the Y410P of course)

Some good points made. However, I don't feel the need to to spend the extra money when a 240 g ssd hard drive can be had for $126. I don't think the extra 20% speed of whatever is worth it to me. I actually could make due with 128 gigs, it actually forces me to keep my computer clean, but it was a good point so I am opting for a larger drive and will out the stock hard drive i take out into an external enclosure.

Btw I "benched marked" my sl510s hard drive. I don't remember the name of the bench mark or the specific score, all I know is for computers with the same CPU/ram combo, it scored way below average. Based on the real world numbers I've read about with this solid state memory, even the slower/cheaper ssd will be a 300%+ increase in speed. The other bottle neck in the sl510 is the graphics. They are awful. I never intended to game much on it except for some older games. Sim city 4? Nope, okay sim city 3000, nfw. Sc3k is from freaking 1999....

You could also get a hard drive caddy and replace your dvd drive with it.

I've considered that, but I do use he DVD drive here and there. I do already have an external DVD burner, but still I seem to use CDs on a semi regular basis.

Decent. It will be awhile before the Lenovo lands on my doorstep. I may just stick with Windows 8, but I have been using only Debian for close to 2 years now. Great OS.

For my needs, on a 14" screen, the 1366x should be just fine. I understand the drawbacks. In my thinking, I would rather use the extra $100 and purchase a good 1600x screen and install it. Or, throw that $100 toward a SSD.

    Hi all,

I'm new to the forums, I've been reading up on this laptop since last month when I found it on a comment in Lifehacker. I'm just waiting to get my loan cheque from my company to give to my retailer.

The listed item from my retailer has this description though: Y410P-59395112. My search results for that model number yielded 0 results with regards to official hardware specifications (I'm from the Philippines btw) can anyone enlighten me?

Also, I'm planning to upgrade the RAM (as my item only comes with 4gb, another reason I'm looking for official specs), can anyone recommend an 8gb RAM?

    Thank you.

u just need to buy another 4gb ram. Just find 1x4gb 1600mhz value rams from adata/corsair/kingston/gskill and buy whichever is cheaper.

Thanks, I was planning to take out my 2x4gb RAM from my current laptop and replace the 4gb in the y410p, I'll post the specs for the RAM later, want to confirm if it will be any good.

Don't forget a solid state hard drive. I am replacing the hard drive in the computer with a sds as opposed to adding it as a second drive. This will speed you puter way up.

Thanks, incidentally, I'm currently using an Intel SSD on my current laptop (256gb, forgot the model)
EDIT: Here's my SSD, gonna install this on my y410p once I get it (and that caddy I already have as well)

    You will need new ram.

I googled the model number of the RAM, here's what I got. Says its 1.5v,1.35v
    screenshot.4.jpg

What will be the effect if I had a 1.5v RAM installed on the y410p? It won't work well enough? Any recommended (specific) brand/model of RAM that is good for the y410p?

1.5v can cause problems with haswell mobile processors. You can buy 1.35 volts DDR3L 1600mhz ram from any major brands like those i have mentioned on a previous post. I'm not sure what your ram means by 1.5v and 1.35v.

The laptop I ordered (basic y410p) comes with 6 gb. Dont know the configuration yet. However, I want to put the ssd in first and see how it performs. I may not need a ram upgrade. Then again, not like ram is that expensive.

    Intel 7260-N

    Lenovo website says so.
btw, is there any way to read the fan speed? Speedfan either crashes or doesn't detect the fan. I would like to allow my y410p to reach higher fan speeds when the temperature is high.

Sorry, it's kinda hard to find 1.35v RAM locally (Philippines) the local retailers don't even post the voltage on their ad description.

The one I posted cost approximately USD 83.20, and now the retailer replied that they do not have stock. God..

I just found the Kingston RAM locally, cost approximately USD 90.85, but the item is listed as 'Server Memory', so I'm very doubtful..
No listing with regards to GSkill, so I'm very lost right now..

EDIT: Yup, majority of 1.35v RAMs available here in the Philippines are Crucial brand. Is it no good because of the brand or because it's overpriced?

its very overpriced. 8gb of ram here in singapore cost about 70usd. 95usd is wayy too much. Server memory is ECC capable which is why they are more expensive than consumer ones. Try to find normal 1.35v 1600mhz ram. Get the cheapest one will do.
Also, is it possible to import in from amazon?

Amazon to Philippines? Nope. Wish they could though.
How about this one, it costs USD 47.99 on the website, but locally it's more like USD 43.85
    CT51264BF160B - 4GB, 204-pin SODIMM , DDR3 PC3-12800 from Crucial.com

I'm actually worried that the 4gb RAM included with the y410p I ordered is more than 1.35v. If 1.5v RAM really does nasty things to Haswells, then I would literally take out that 4gb and buy an 8gb Corsair if it's the only available low voltage RAM here.

Thanks, guess I'll have to see what's installed first. You did say different countries have different model codes. It would be highly unlikely I'd get 2x2gb RAM right? Coz if I do I'd be pissed, my WIn7 that I bought (that I'm planning to install once I set up the SSD) is for x64 architecture, that's why I was going for more than 4gb of RAM.

I got mine in 1x8gb. I think 2x2gb is more expensive than 1x4gb so i doubt it would come like that.
To be honest, i see no reason why anyone even uses x32 windows. Its not like its cheaper than x64.
Lastly, i dont think windows 7 is any better than windows 8 other than the "modern UI" which can be solved by simple programs like classic shell.

I just got mine and it is great. It is light to me but then 5.5lbs is nothing really. I am a bit confused though. The specs are different as in a bit better than what I expected. Instead of 6GB RAM it is 8GB. Instead of 500GB, it is 1TB. I need to also do some checks on other specs. It is a i5 model.

What software is recommended for checking system specs?

Ordered mine on 3/6, my estimated ship date is 3/21....My fiance left this weekend, I had some free time in between preparing to move, god I wanted to game and I had already packed the xbox hahaha.

It might be good for people who are planning to use classic shell but haven't installed it. But for us classic shell users, there is no real benefits of changing to another start menu thats pretty much exactly the same.

That's likely the maximum battery life setting (or preserve battery... something like that). It stops charging the battery at around 60% to prevent excess wear.. It's for systems that spend most of their time plugged in and don't need maximum run-time. Double-check that in your power settings. Like all things Windows, if you modify that setting you *may* need to restart to make it stick.

Been running classic shell since a week or two after I bought my Y410P. Hey, I gave Metro a decent shot, but it sucks!

Also, Cristao, that seeting is in Lenovo power management, not windows power settings.

I gave Windows 8 a shot for about a week. Then I gave Windows 8.1 a shot for a week. Both times I have reverted to Windows 7. When and if Microsoft releases the next "big" update they promise, it supposed to make the Windows 8 line more mouse and keyboard friendly and I will try once again. I am not bashing Windows 8 I think it looks good and is intuitive. It was definitely designed for and works great on touchscreens. But it is kind of horrible with just a mouse and keyboard. While it is workable, it is a little annoying to me.

Seriously try again and install Classic Shell, it is quite hard to tell the difference between 7 and 8 that way, except for all the great features they added in 8. I agree I would never use Win8 if I had to put up with Metro but with Classic Shell or one of the other start menu replacers there is really no reason not to run 8 IMHO.
