Here's a quick video on the Legion Slim 7, and it looks like kind of a face plant. It's a 60W GPU, half the RAM is soldered to the motherboard, and the thermals look quite poor.

I honestly cant understand Lenovo's thinking, this is similar to the P15 I had which had poor cooling capacity than a P1

Yep, I smile with myself thinking on all those out there that said when AMD entered the notebook arena we would see the end of 100C as with the Intel chips. If the chips use less power, just reduce thermal capacity. Cheaper to make as well. The second benefits for the OEM is thinner design. Exactly as what the people ask for.

Yes you really can't change the laws of physics as much as people would like to try lol. As a general rule of thumb you are correct that people want thin, light and pretty. How that happens is something to be worried about later down the road after 3 years.

The only asterisk I would add is that for people on *this* forum want either DTRs or Workstations, further my comment was that when such an opportunity presented itself Lenovo still managed to screw it up. Ironically enough worse than the Ultrabook that had a horrible reputation of being loud, hot and with terrible battery life. Really impressive when you think about it.

Anybody have any thoughts on the Legion Ultimate Support warranties? I have read a few horror stories on reddit but it seemed like the self install would generally be ok provided that they keep repair parts available on par with their business lines.

I wish I had an answer. From all I’ve read the business side seems like it’s a good experience. And from what I’ve read that on-site repairs seem to be ok. Just sending your machine in for repair to Lenovo might be a nightmare.

I used a Lenovo warranty to repair an X1C that had a bad thunderbolt port (ironically covered by a recall years later) and they sent a base i5 motherboard rather than my top spec. They ultimately refunded me because of the mix up. Nice folks but it wasn't great.

When you're using a 45W CPU in a very thin chassis and with a crappy cooling system with smaller vents, its a recipe for a disaster. Lenovo failed pretty hard here

Some might still prefer it over an Asus G15, for instance, since it does have a webcam. The numberpad would also be useful for productivity, which it seems more geared towards.

My singular experience with Legion support was quite good. The adapter for the laptop I was using at the time (Y545 IIRC) went bad. I submitted an online ticket, and within 24 hours they shipped out a replacement via two-day air. They didn't even ask for the defective unit back. All in all it was entirely painless.

I would have to agree. In the US it is a $650 configuration upgrade and forces upgrades to 32GB and 5900HX further increasing the price difference between the RTX 3070.

At least the Legion 5 / 5 Pro get the RTX 3070 as an option this year, making the choice simpler.

I’m flying with my L5P and this sucker is heavy when you include the power brick. I may have to downgrade to a smaller laptop.

Were you ever able to get one of those smaller 230W AC Adapters? I imagine it would be noticeably lighter than the 300W.

I’m trying to figure out if any of the ports on the back of the Legion 7i support DisplayPort.

From the info I see in the Lenovo site it appears than the ports on the back do not.

Can anyone confirm this for me?

I have one of the slim 230W adapters. While it is physically much smaller, it's not all that much lighter. That being said, transporting it didn't end up being the massive hassle I made it out to be in my above post. I didn't use it on the plane, but now that I have it set up at my destination, I'm rather liking it. The only other options to replace it would have been a Blade 14 or Asus G14, and neither has the comprehensive feature set of the L5P.

Both USB-C ports on the laptop support DisplayPort 1.4.

Thats true they should of advertise it as a productivity laptop instead of a gaming laptop.

How did you determine that, do you have a source?

I chatted with Lenovo and they claimed that a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter would be necessary on any of the back ports.

Sure, the same USB-C to DisplayPort adapter you would use on an Asus GX501 for instance. Or a USB-C to DisplayPort cable could be used instead which would be a bit more reliable.

Lenovo has many productivity-focused laptops. There is no reason for them to advertise any Legion model as such. It is still a gaming-focused device at heart, but it also happens to excel at productivity tasks. While I'm not yet ready to make this call, the Legion 5 Pro is poised to overtake my beloved 2011 MacBook Pro 15 as my favorite laptop, not to mention one of my favorite computers as a whole, of all time.

    Lenovo_Legion_7_16ACHg6_Spec.pdf

I forgot that the Legion 7 has a third USB-C port instead of USB-A like the 5 and 5 Pro. That connection (on the right side of the laptop) does not support DP 1.4, but the other two do.

You can also watch the Jarrod's Tech review of this laptop, and he confirms DP compatibility on those Type-C ports.

Maybe I’m mistaken but are you talking about the Legion 7 AMD? My question was about the intel version.

I realize the AMD has DP compatibility on atleast one of the rear ports. The intel version does not claim the same, at least not as outwardly.

The left and rear USB-C ports on the Intel version are also DisplayPort compatible as this is part of the Thunderbolt 4 specification.

I cancelled my 7 AMD order. Ordered the 7i configure my own. Cancelled it today and ordered the pre-built 7i. I could get it for $50 more with upgraded drives and warranty. Now I'm waiting on a pending $3100 charge to get off my card, a $3100 pending charge to get off Paypal and a $3150 charge to go through on Paypal when the new one ships. I hope they ALL don't go through. Wheee ..

Shipping on the configured system was initially November. Shipping on the pre-built is July 28. Excitement is building ..

Are you still on about the USB-C ports supporting DisplayPort output? Aside from Lenovo's documentation on this model:

    Lenovo_Legion_7_16ITHg6_Spec.pdf

Let's look at things logically - why would Lenovo support DisplayPort output via USB-C on the AMD model but not Intel? Further, as I've already stated, DP video out is part of the Thunderbolt specification.

Do we know if the L5P can take storage larger than 1TB in each drive? I think I saw one or two posts on here talking about it. Thinking of just getting one 2TB drive and using it for main and storage and using the stock 512GB drive as a secondary. I can change that to an awful QLC high capacity drive a few years from now.

The other thing that gives me pause, at least on the quicker shipping Legion 7i part number 82K60004US, is that it says that 16 GB of the RAM is soldered on.

My AMD Legion 7 order back to saying August 10th now. I believe this is the sixth time the ship date has changed since I ordered it.
